    This is a hands-on preview of the brand new Sony a9 III. A camera that does things in a full frame mirrorless camera we've never seen. We're talking a 24.6 megapixel global shutter. Global means, when you take the photo, every pixel fires at the same time. That means, no more banding, no more bent bats, warped balls or jello in your videos. On top of that, they have Pre shooting and 120 FPS RAW SHOOTING with full time af and metering. INSANE is an understatement. This is just a first look, we will have way more information as we get to use the camera more.

      The issue at the moment with this camera for theatre production photography is the reduced dynamic range and higher noise levels than the previous two models. The real torture test will be photographing a musical, a play in a large theatre and smaller plays in fringe theatres under various brightnesses of lightings using all different brands of LED theatre lights. Photographing concerts is a simpler test for the camera.

    Love Sony pushing the envelope as always with the latest tech. For those bummed about the 24mp, it's a sports camera 24 is preferred with the amount of data you are moving. I'm sure the new A1 will have this tech with higher mp as it is meant to be the flagship that has everything.

    • @JoaquimGonsalves
      @JoaquimGonsalves 11 месяцев назад +4

      24MP has been good enough since the Canon 80D days and probably even before that. But of course there might be some who need more. For me, 24/26 are totally ok. Exciting to see what the next A1 will do.
      The only time in my style of work that I found extra MP useful was at an indoor event in a pub on a loaner XH2. I didn't have the luxury of time to keep switching to my 75mm and so in some cases the 40MP came in handy in post. I must also say that I was really struggling with the horrible lighting there and Lightroom's AI handled the high ISO images really well.
      Having said that, for wildlife and birding, a capable high MP camera is of course amazing to have.

    • @swistedfilms
      @swistedfilms 11 месяцев назад +2

      Y'know, I was disappointed when the R6 was only 20 MP but since I've had the opportunity to use it I'm realizing just how much you can really do with it. Plus, that sensor is a BEAST! And I'm betting that the Sony sensor is just as good. I've printed 24x36 with 20 MP and it looked great! I've seen huge prints of 24 MP photos that looked amazing! So 24 MP is more than we think. Of course, I still use my R5 when I really mean business...

I think Canon could update R3 with pre-shooting in raw and a few other features the R6 MK2 brought in, via firmware update. Interesting time and can't wait to see what Canon will come up with. Nikon though, I think they have already proven they are right up there with the top stuff. I will be interested to see what dynamic range they get out of it as global shutter on cmos takes a hit on DR.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 11 месяцев назад

      Here's at least part of the story. The base ISO of 250 sets some of the DR question, because of course, every camera increases DR as the ISO increases.
      I can tell you why there's a base ISO of 250. Every 24 FF sensor will have basically the same size photodiodes on the sensor, producing essentially the same output. The photodiode output is continuous ... you need storage, too, because an exposure integrates light over time. So there's also a thing called a charge well -- in electronics, we call that a capacitor. It's a charge storage element. Every sensor has charge wells for each pixel on the sensor.
      When you shoot a photo at base ISO (no amplification), your base is basically determined by comparing what the camera does to chemical photography (there are detailed ISO standards nearly every company uses). So you have an ISO100 base if you can take essentially the same photo at ISO100. You'll also notice that as sensors get smaller, base ISO tends to increase. My Micro Four Thirds cameras have a 200 base ISO. Why would side matter? The size of the photodiode isn't the issue, it's the size of the charge well. Smaller photodiodes mandate smaller charge wells, everything being equal. In the same light, a smaller charge well will "overflow" sooner than a larger one. In shot, an ISO 100 sensor can store twice the charge per charge well, peak, as an ISO 200 base sensor.
      So this chip pretty clearly has smaller charge wells than your typical 24 megapixel FF sensor. Why? Well, I think part of it is the optimization for speed -- which is kind of the point of a global electronic sensor camera, eh? The camera exposes the sensor, charges up the charge wells, converts charge to voltage, reads those voltages out to an array of analog-to-digital converters, sends that data over a high speed bus to your camera's image signal processor and, voila, a photo! There's an inherent time constant with any charging or discharging of a capacitor in a circuit. To increase the base ISO, Sony would probably have to lower the top shutter speed and maybe (depending on any other bottlenecks) the sensor readout speed.
      Sony's selling a whole line of cameras. In fact, with the A7 series, they were really the first company to go after the idea of "you need more than one version of the same camera" at least to professionals. If your main need is resolution, you have an A7R. If your main need is DR, you have an A7S ... assuming, of course, you're a Sony shooter. They were pushing the idea that one size does not fit all in capabilities, rather than the high/low-end scale used by most companies. This is one more option for those who want this, knowing that any body choice represents some kind of tradeoff over other options.

      Nikon can't follow. For many reasons: 1. They depend on Sony's mercy: why will Sony give a modern sensor to Nikon? 2. They don't have the money to fly around RUclipsrs, which means that the likes of Tony and Chealsy don't see anything special in Nikon's telephoto range 3. Nikon lacks an entry-level camera that can focus at least as well as the other brands did 5 years ago. They don't have a set of inexpensive lenses that one can recommend to someone starting photography. This means Nikon has issues attracting the new generations. This machine basically kills the Z9 and the R3 (but no one is going to underscore that, because Canon also flies RUclipsrs all around the world). Nikon could cut the prices 20% to try to compete, but they don't have a healthy source of income outside photography Sony and Canon have the costumer electronic devices etc. Sony can also invest in advanced technologies because they dominate the smartphone camera market.

    The fix in 10 years from now: The new Sony A9 mark 10, 50000 frames per second. While I'm quite impressed with the specs, am I the only one who thinks that things are getting out of hand in terms of how many frames per second cameras can shoot? I mean I almost exclusively shoot with the mechanical shutter at 12 fps on my R6 mark2 and it still feels like overkill at times, even when I'm tracking people or animals. Wish they'd put as much effort into developing revolutionary sensors with better dynamic range and high iso performance instead of focusing on the 120 shots, 119 of which you're going to be deleting anyway.

    • @DaveHaynie

      Global CMOS sensors have typically been much lower resolution, lower DR, and noisier than their rolling shutter cousins. Canon's had one since 2022, but it's only 19.4 megapixels, sold for industrial applications. I sounds like Sony has solved most of those issues, but I think a reduced ISO range is something I'd expect, at least for the first generation.

    I shoot Canon but I am blown away at the specs for this thing! Canon already announced no quad pixel AF on R1, so if they do not stick a global shutter on it then it will really be a game over. Perhaps Canon will call it a R3ii instead if that is the case?

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 11 месяцев назад

      It's not as simple as "stick a global shutter on it". An electronic shutter isn't really a thing, it's a process. It's clever timing between camera software and sensor readout channels. The design of the entire sensor is fundamentally different for a global shutter sensor. There have been various problems with them, including noise and low sensitivity.

      Canon board probably wont sleep tonight, if they dont have fairly good enough global shutter sensor ready to hit the market. Sony made hard and risky move - they set a bar, by being first with GS tech. But now Canon will hit with every "canon" they have, and they will know exactly where to hit, they will find out every single weak point of a9 III, and they will do everything to beat it badly. Oh, Sony, you have old CF Express A card? We will get you better CF. Oh, you have only 192 shot buffer? We will give you bigger buffer, better. Oh you have 120 fps with full AF, and composition...? Well... even if we cant do that, we will give you 200 fps with "some" AF and "some" composition... but, hey look, 200 fps, we are better! And if no, we will give you 60 fps, but with bigger resolution. We will give you ANYTHING, just to show you that we are better (even if we are not).
      But it all comes to one big question: Do Canon have fast, stacked, global shutter sensor ready, to hit the market before Olympics 2024?
