Thank you so much for showing how to manage a quilt where there’s not enough room. I’ve had a hard time with that. I really appreciate your thorough tutorials.....they’re precise, to the point, and understandable. STAY SAFE!
Thank you so much for demonstrating on a full sized quilt! I am so annoyed at tutorials using little 10-inch blocks. Ugh! There is a HUGE difference between quilting on a 10-inch square and quilting on a full quilt. It's the "real life" demonstrations that help the most! I so appreciate all of your videos.
After saving for over 10 years, I was FINALLY able to purchase a sewing machine in January! I've been so excited and sewing quilt tops like crazy. I've already made 2 and will be starting on a 3rd one today. Now I know how to finish them up so I can make more! Thanks for a great tutorial.
I love Rob's You Tube tutorial on basting fabrics and batting for quilting. He always answers the question I'm about to ask the recording before I voice the question. Thanks for your commonsense ways for all the techniques you teach! You're entertaining , informative and knowledgeable. I also love that you are appealing to men to try their skills in the area of sewing and not feeling like they are not infringing on a females only activity.
I'm a novice sewer, and looking to embark on my first couple of quilts (with a smaller sewing machine)for friends who are having babies. Your tutorials are so awesome! You explain things so clearly, you give awesome tips, and you energy & clear love for quilting makes it so fun to watch your tutorials! So glad that I happened upon your channel! You're totally rad! Thanks!
I love that your viewpoint, as a male, gives us other options (like carpenter's clips instead of large paper binder clips, for example). This was exactly the tutorial I needed to understand how to make my first large quilt on a regular sized machine. Thanks so much!
Rob - fantastic tutorial. I enjoy your demonstrations, especially when you have little bloopers as it makes me feel that I am not alone as I have encountered a lot of the bloopers myself. You are the best and keep those little bloopers in the tutorials.
Excellent tutorial on sandwiching and basting large quilts!!! Thank you for demonstrating this on showing on a large quilt instead of a small quilt sandwich, as it helps A LOT to see someone get this process done by alone. So much helpful information that I couldn't stop watching and will probably watch a few more times when ready to start FMQing on a quilt (vs. practicing quilting). Ya done good, Rob!!!!!
Rob miss you with MSQC... But glad I found you again.. Love your video's... and energy. Leaned so much for you... Thank you. Also got hubby to be more helpful because of you... THANK YOU!!!... looking forward to many many more great Video's... Happy Quilting - creating.
Thank you so much for making this video. You have a much more practical approach to smoothing out the fabric for basting. I tried this method today and it worked better for me than any other method. Thanks again 😊
Thank you soooooo much!!!!! Great tutorial! Later today, I'm going to baste my quilt project using your method. First though, I have to acquire some clamps. Shopping for clamps!!! YEA!!
This tutorial was very helpful. I have always relied on spray basting and am just tired of the overspray (and the expense). Last year when I was Spring cleaning, I found cobwebs in the basement that were glued in place! 😃I'm working on my second quilt using pins. Hard on old arthritic hands, so I think I'm going to invest in the tool you showed. My oh so helpful husband went out and found me an old ping pong table and set it up in the basement this week. Bless his heart.....I'm only 4'11 so I'm going to have to find a step stool so I can reach the center of the table. The quilts I'm working on have backs and fronts that need to be centered. What I did was glued a small button on the middle spot of the table and then found my front and back centers. Did this on the batting as well, so everything worked out as far as overhang of backing and batting around the perimeter. Funny...........my extra set of hands is always my husband. When we were laying out the batting, he knew and kept saying to me....don't pull..... "lift and drape". He must have been listening from the other room. (Which I find amazing because usually when I ask him something from another room he says he can't hear me). Thanks again for your wonderful instruction. I think you're a great teacher!
Thank you for doing a real size quilt. I'm a beginner and you have no idea how much your tutorial has helped me!! Ironing it out before basting...didn't know. Getting off the floor...didn't know. Fitting it in a machine and rolling it OUT as you go...didn't know. ALL OF THESE makes a huge difference.
Thanks Rob. I had made a Running T-shirt quilt a few years, am now working on a second one & forgot exactly how I did the basting. Your tutorial provided some great tips. I've decided to order the Quick Clip tool. Really liked how you demonstrated on a large quilt. Who says real men don't sew? I call myself a 'Seamster'.
I want to say I love when someone who teaches something is excited about it. Thank you for that. I have watch so many videos that just sadly are so robotic and don't seem very happy to be teaching us. This is refreshing and helpful.
Great instructions for basting a quilt prior to FMQ on a domestic machine. So nice to see that you are human and forgot to check the layout of the batting but you got away with it! LOL Your tutorials are very informative and fun to watch.
Fabulous tutorial! Who would have thought bicycle clamps could be used in quilting?? Rob has such enthusiasm and makes me want to try new things! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise.
Very cool ideas using common hardware tools; that helps save some cash for fabric and batting! Rob takes time to describe each detail with the visual; catching both the auditory and visual learners plus giving us shortcuts. I also love when he relates his learning process; that makes me feel better about not being perfect the first time. After viewing this tutorial I feel better equipped to tackle larger quilts! Thanks Rob :)
What's so funny is just the day before you posted this, I had on my to-do list to go find a library book to read some helpful hints on sanwiching this bargello quilt I've had on the back burner. The semester just began and haven't had enough snow days to make time. You must have known! Because 'lo and behold in my weekly email of Rob's Man Sewing is a video tutorial of exactly what I needed! You're the best! Your energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks so much! Now I just have to work ahead in my classes and papers to reward myself with some quilting time!
you have inspired my husband to attempt machine quilting. he's only quilted by hand, but seeing your videos gives him confidence that he too can do this! Thank you very much Rob!
I love your vids. Having a man’s voice is more pleasant to me + you’re easy to understand, funny, & you’re good on the eyes! And you don’t seem like the quilt police like so many women seem to be.
Such a Ah-hah moment. Like you showed at the end, I was thinking I had to keep rolling as I worked...making it too much to fit into the opening of my machine. Never dawned on me until I saw you do it...you unroll and work to the right. Also loved the idea of using the batting to make my work table into a large ironing board in order to iron my backing. Thank you sooo much for the demo.
I have a king size quilt to baste right now! I can no longer get on my knees on the floor and was dreading trying to figure out how to do it. Rob to the rescue! Thanks. I think I can do this!
It is a very chilly weekend in Alberta, (-18 C). So I have decided to make a quilt for a friend. I have all my pieces cut out and am ready, but am overwhelmed on what to do next. I just spent quite a lot of time watching your amazingly easy to watch and follow tutorials and am now ready to attempt to baste and then free motion quilt. Thanks for making this look real and doable. I am excited to get started thanks to your videos........ Wish me luck!!!
You are the only one that explains this so that I can actually do it on my own without taking a class. Quilt Basting Basics Made Easy! is the best and now I know how to bast a quilt. I had the boxes of pins ready but not idea how to put it all together right. I want to make one for my mother's 80th birthday. I can now quit putting off finishing it because I know how to do it.
This tutorial was the best I've seen on basting and how to prepare for quilting it. Rob, you really explained everything well and makes it look easy. (And it's good to know that I am not the only one who finds her/himself too close to the edge of the batting after pinning. Also loved the quilt top pattern you used. Design and color was awesome!
I'm fairly new to quilting and this tutorial is great. All that I know about quilting has been learned from magazines, books, and you tube. This tutorial is very informative and has been of great help to me. Thanks Rob; great job.
I am new to machine quilting(as in never done it)so I am watching your basting video for the second time. I'm learning so much. Really like the use of the tape and clamps.this machine quilting looks very daunting but after watching your tutorials I'm ready to try. Thank you
I am just getting started in making my first quilt from piecing to top quilting! Your tutorials are very helpful. You never skip a step in like so many others video. They assume I know all the steps! You are my go to guy! LOL keep informing and making videos!
Rob, you explain how to do things SO well! I never knew about why we start quilting from the middle and what happens! And I love how share your mistakes, so that we know we are not the only ones ho have made some huge mistakes!
Awesome tutorial!! I am a novice quilter and mostly do bed size quilts. So excited to see a way to put the quilt together without crawling all over the floor. I am getting way too old for that. LOL Thank you for sharing. I am definitely subbing!
THIS WAS A WONDERFUL HELP TO ME!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND FOR WHAT YOU DO! IT'S GREAT TO SEE THE "REAL" MOMENTS AND MAKES A NEWBIE LIKE ME FEEL I CAN DO THIS! I ENJOYED THIS VERY MUCH...
I did not know you had to start in the middle. I started at the top and worked down. I will be starting my second quilt soon and will be watching this again to remind me how to do it right. Thanks for the Video!
Wow…! That answers a whack load of questions for me! Thanks so much for this wealth of information. My friend Sharon’s Christmas present is looking so much more possible! Thanks again.
Wow! I just discovered Man Sewing. This was great. So many patterns and quilting books just say make a quilt sandwich and then quilt as desired. They never tell you how to make the sandwich. Thanks for the help.
I'm glad you mentioned not using Spray basting on large quilts. I did this ,it stuck to the batting and I had a terrible time to get it to lay flat! I would never do it again!! I never thought of ironing my quilt on the table while assembling it. I always did it before I laid it out. It makes more sense to do it while on the table. Although it will be hard to do it with an iron with a cord I'm going to try it! Thank you for the advice! I also Love how you kept the quilt rolled up. I to have a small machine.
While I so far have greatly enjoyed every one of your tutorials, I especially liked this one! I'm getting way too old to be crawling on the floor trying to get my quilts layered and basted and this method will cure that ill for sure! I'm getting ready to go through this process for a quilt for my granddaughter, and am actually looking forward to it instead of putting it off until I can' wait any longer. Thanks for a much-needed solution!! And keep these wonderful tutorials coming!!! Have a great day!
I know this is a late response, but I agree totally. I have a tear in a miniscus, so crawling on the floor, even carpeted floors, is no longer feasible.
Rob, thank you for actully demonstrating a quilt that is larger than your table top. I am a visual person so this helps a lot. People talk about the clamps, but never really knew WHICH clamps. Also best piece of info is the roll in the throat of machine. I also thought you rolled the quilt into the throat instead of away from. 😂
Just found your videos....wonderful wealth of information. I knew some of the basting techniques, but I was making it a lot more difficult. Thank you for sharing and making quilting time easier...Back to watching more videos
Thank you Rob! This is the best quilt basting I have ever seen. I love the use of the pin tool. I wasn't using it right so now I will use it all the time. The information to start in the middle of the quilt make a lot of sense. I have made a couple of quilts that are nice but your tutorial will make the next one nicer.
Oh my gosh! Finally a tutorial that makes sense to me. I have accomplished all facets of quilting except this step. It's been making me crazy that I haven't been successful. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much for finally showing how to do a NORMAL size quilt for basting on a regular table!!! I'm looking forward to learning about the free style quilting on a regular sewing machine. I've never done the free style because it was so intimidating on a regular sewing machine (I have a Singer). Keep up the great work. Love your tutorials!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. Very helpful to see how you use the bicycle clips. Loved the "human" moment. Always good to know even the best quilters make those mistakes we've all made.
I really enjoyed this video since I am relatively new to quilting. I was intimidated with the thought of basting the quilt and was avoiding this step. Have done mostly envelope closing since they have been small quilts. I feel I have gained some confidence after watching this video. Plus I can always view it as I am basting my quilt together. Thanks!
this video along with the other ones I have watched so far are awesome. I am new to sewing ( well kinda .. haven''t touched a sewing machine since middle school many many years ago)I got a sewing machine for christmas and have been watching your videos and learning alot to get me back into sewing.thank you for sharing and keep up the beauyful quilting this one here is awesome, hopefully some day I'll get god enough to make one of my own
This has been a problem for me and I'm sure many others. Putting the quilt together and trying to quilt it and finding the back has folds and creases in it, how frustrating that is!!! Thanks Rob, for showing us the way...and so smoothly!!
I really enjoyed the tutorial on basting. I discovered that basically I was doing it correctly but you had a lot of good tips to make it even easier. Thanks Rob!
Thanks for the tips! IMO, making the quilt top is the easy part.... but the basting/sandwiching is the most difficult thing about quilting. Your tips will make it easier for me!!
Love this video.Especially the part about the quilt being bigger than the table and how to deal with that. I have used that advice and it really was very successful.
Great tutorial. Now I know I have been doing my free motion all wrong no wonder it was so hard for me. Thanks for your help. I enjoy all your demo's and watch them regular. I have learn a lot from you so giving you a great big THANK YOU!!!
Here we go! Thanks for the explanation of the bicycle clips and the direction of free style motion!
Thank you so much for showing how to manage a quilt where there’s not enough room. I’ve had a hard time with that. I really appreciate your thorough tutorials.....they’re precise, to the point, and understandable. STAY SAFE!

It really doesn’t hurt that Rob is very easy on the eyes!
Rob you are a great teacher. Very clear and to the point, no silly chatter that wastes time. Your alot better looking than the usual old ladies too!

The quilt color looks fantastic. The love for quilting is something that we can’t explained to people that never did it. You do well, and by the way
you have inspired my husband to attempt machine quilting. he's only quilted by hand, but seeing your videos gives him confidence that he too can do this! Thank you very much Rob!
I love your vids. Having a man’s voice is more pleasant to me + you’re easy to understand, funny, & you’re good on the eyes! And you don’t seem like the quilt police like so many women seem to be.
Oh my goodness! You are just AMAZING! Your videos are such a blessing to me! So thankful Missouri Star Quilt Co shared your work! Yippee!

Thx Rob......you give me freedom. On my journey into FMQ, I am losing the fear and letting the creativity out! You rock as an instructor!!!
I love how you stick to the basics. Even as a seasoned quilter, I always learn a new trick or two. Keep those tutorials coming.
This tutorial was the best I've seen on basting and how to prepare for quilting it. Rob, you really explained everything well and makes it look easy. Great, great, great. Can't wait to see the sequel. And, I also love your 'human' moments. Yes!
+Susan Allen I'm glad that you appreciate my human moments lol I wouldn't have a job if people didn't appreciate them! :P Thanks for watching, Susan!
The fabulous stuff is no one knows you're an android. And the human moments are programmed. Right? lol
Thank you! As a beginner these "basics" are some of the things you just don't know without some direction. Love this!!!
This is such an amazing help, because I simply have not been able to baste successfully. Thanks, Rob!!
Rob, thank you so much for this :) Being a new quilter, this is fantastic! I'm not scared of basting, anymore. You are AWESOME!!!!
I am just getting started in making my first quilt from piecing to top quilting! Your tutorials are very helpful. You never skip a step in like so many others video. They assume I know all the steps! You are my go to guy! LOL keep informing and making videos!

Thanks for tuning in! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the tutorial! :)
This is an older video but I wanted to tell you that your quilt is beautiful. Love the design.
Awesome tutorial!! I am a novice quilter and mostly do bed size quilts. So excited to see a way to put the quilt together without crawling all over the floor. I am getting way too old for that. LOL Thank you for sharing. I am definitely subbing!
I've been a quilter for along time, but I learn something new every time I watch your tutorials. Basting a quilt tutorial is very helpful.
Glad to know I’m not the only one to get a quilt half basted and then find out one layer is short. Thanks for the tutorial!
Another tutorial that I will be coming back to over and over again! That painter's tape is a great idea
Rob, thanks so much for the quilting tutorials. I have not yet made a quilt, but after watching this I'm much more convinced I CAN do this!
Thanks, Rob, love the tutorial. You make it very clear and I love your techniques. Thank you!
THIS WAS A WONDERFUL HELP TO ME!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND FOR WHAT YOU DO! IT'S GREAT TO SEE THE "REAL" MOMENTS AND MAKES A NEWBIE LIKE ME FEEL I CAN DO THIS! I ENJOYED THIS VERY MUCH...
Great video, the real life explanation made all the difference.
top notch tutorial- this takes the mystery out of quilt basting and makes it seem a lot less intimidating.
OMG. I am a new quilter and I love the bicycle clips tip!! Thank you so much. You explain things so easily.
Wow! I just discovered Man Sewing. This was great. So many patterns and quilting books just say make a quilt sandwich and then quilt as desired. They never tell you how to make the sandwich. Thanks for the help.
The best demonstration of basting I've seen! Thank you!
I appreciate all of the tips Rob gives in all of his tutorials.
I'm glad you mentioned not using Spray basting on large quilts. I did this ,it stuck to the batting and I had a terrible time to get it to lay flat! I would never do it again!! This is the first quilt i have seen from beginning to end.Great instructions for a beginning quilter like me! I think I can...!
Thanks Rob. Your videos are so easy to follow. Please keep on posting videos.
As a newbie to quilting, this takes the fear level down a notch or two! Thanks!
Just found your videos....wonderful wealth of information. I knew some of the basting techniques, but I was making it a lot more difficult. Thank you for sharing and making quilting time easier...Back to watching more videos
The colour palette and arrangement of the big block is just lovely! Thank you for the tips.
Have been quilting for awhile - but always find something new to learn. You gave me some wonderful tips
and I learned new ideas. Thanks
+Fun Channel so glad you enjoyed this! You'll have to let us know how it works out for you!
Oh my gosh! Finally a tutorial that makes sense to me. I have accomplished all facets of quilting except this step. It's been making me crazy that I haven't been successful. Thank you, thank you!
Love your iron!!! I love it when men love to sew. you do an awesome job with all your tutorials.
+Sandie Sepulveda thanks a million!!!
He is the best I have seen. I love him. No wishy washy talking he's' clear and to the point.
Love the free motion quilting video. Rob makes it all look so simple!
Most useful information I have seen on quilt prep. This will definitely make my next project easier.
Love all the tutorials but especially "Basting Basics" video. Great helps for the home quilter!
