I tried the pool noodle basting method today and it worked like a charm. Before I knew it I was finished on a lap quilt I am making for my granddaughter. Will be using this method from now on. Thank you so much for the video.
New to quilting, I’ve made 3 and had no idea there was a right and wrong side to batting! Thank you for this education! And for the super pool noodle tutorial!
This was the best video I’ve ever seen in basting the quilt. Finally an easy way to do it. Thank you so much for making this video. I can’t wait to try it.
❤❤❤❤ I’m 79 and still am excited to learn new methods. I’ve known about people using pool noodles, but never saw a good demonstration until your video. 😊 I’m eager to try it. You were ingenious to join two together like a male and female plug PLUS the tape! And the way you set up for machine quilting-you rock in that department!! The “necklace” to help support the part in front of you-now that is super-Genius! Adding quilt batting and then the Minky-so smart. I love how you describe the feel of it. I can’t wait to see the video of your husband opening this gift. He will love it not just because you made it, but because you customized it just for him. ❤❤❤❤❤
I love that you are still learning...I love learning and trying new things. I can't wait until my husband opens his quilt. He's gonna love it❤️ Merry Christmas🎄
Wow! Tracy, so glad I saw this! My 80-year old knees and hips hate getting down on the floor, and hate even more getting up! Floor basting is one reason I usually send my quilts to the long-arm quilter, who does that part. This will make quilting my own so much easier, and it will save me money! I really enjoyed your tutorial, which was easy to understand, and you didn't have any extra time-wasting "chit chat" or. annoying music. I gave you a "thumbs up" and subscribed; looking forward to more of your videos!
Love how you get right to the point without all the intro chitchat!. I have used the noodles twice and still working on getting it smooth. You make it look so easy. I use cans from my pantry to keep the noodles from rolling. Like the pool noodle on the table. Will have to try it. Thank you for the info on the right and wrong side of the batting. I guess I have been lucky and got it right by accident on all but one quilt. NOW I know why the batting was poking through the fabric after quilting. THANK YOU! WE can still dream of that huge table in our home to do this on. No more floors for me!!
U can use a quilt ruler edge, like a quick scrapper (try different size rulers for ur personal need) to smooth out wrinkles and air pockets for each layer of quilt being basted....the quilt ruler edge gives a smoother and more efficient and taut smoothing out than using the palms of ur hand.
I no longer quilt large quilts so when I saw this I discussed it with my husband. Instead of using pool noodles, my husband sanded down two lengths of lumber about 3 1/2 inches wide by 60 inches long and I use them to wrap the top, batting, and backing. I pin every few inches and then roll out a few more inches and pin baste some more. It works beautifully. So thanks for the idea.
This sounds similar to what my grandfather (Pop Pop) made for my Mom Mom and the great aunts and somehow attached to saw horses - I remember large clamps? What fun watching the quilting magic and making a few stitches
I am brand spanking new to ,quilting.... but i have been sewing since I was 8..making clothes and odd and ends through the years... I am now 61 and just decided this is the time for me to do what I've always wanted to do. Honestly I never quilted before because everyone I knew that quilted did it by hand, no machines, well that is not for me I stab myself to often with pins and needles... so no thank you. But when it came time to learn to sandwich the quilt the reality hit me... I can NOT be crawling around the floor. Someone will be calling the fire department to get me up. LOL Anyway, you taught me this, and it has worked so well.... Perfectly! Thank You so much!!!!
I absolutely love your videos and share them with all the ladies in my quilting classes. I thank God I saw this video today because I was dreading sandwiching my quilt. I'm getting ready to go to Lowe's to get some pool noodles. They still have them in stock. Again, thank you so much for your awesome videos. 😊🎉
I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate putting a quilt sandwich together. This is a game changer! I am going tomorrow to find pool noodles or pipe insulation and get those tops basted! My kids may actually get their quilts some day! LOL Thanks so much!
You are a wonderful, and very thoughful, teaher. 1. I did not know that there was a right side, and a wrong side, to batting. 2. I did not know how to join Pool Noodles to makes them long enough to use on large quilts. 3. I also did not know how to use that spray glue safely. The quilt shop owner, that I bought my can of spray glue from, did not tell any of us (in that class) about how dangerous that can of spray glue may be (after she talked us into buying it). I learned that after I got home with it and took the time to read the label. I've had it for years and have been to scared to use it. Thank you so much for all this new information. I may learn how guilt better and safer (and suffer less pain while doing it). Please stay safe.
Your the first channel I have seen actually do a large quilt with the noodles. I have my pool noodles but have not done this yet. I also dislike doing this on the floor. I have a queen size I need to sandwich together. Thanks for the inspiration
Yes. Where is part 3? I’d love to see how you put it all together. I’ve made quilts and they’ve been ok but with this brilliant ideathey may be able to satisfy my own hard bar that I set myself. Thanks heaps.
This was a good learning tutorial for me. I did not know there was a right/wrong side on batting. And the use of the pool noodle is so clever. Thank you!
I am somewhat new to quilting. I am happy that I find you on RUclips. You are so easy and calm to listen too-----And understand your directions. Thank you.
Thumbs up and subscribed. Thank you so much. I have 2 unfinished quilt tops because of the dreaded lack of space and puckered quilt backs. I used to borrow a quilt store classroom but many store owners retired and closed shop over the years. And who knew there was a right and wrong side to batting...you did! Learned on another channel about little templates for home quilting. Today has been a game changer. I must resume quilting.
Yes, years ago I was able to pin baste my quilt at a nearby store when the classroom was not used. One shop of 4 remains and they were too busy. I was able to use the large meeting table at work and spray basted for the first time just folding back and spraying. Took like 3 hours! The table has curved sides so visibly weird. I wished I had an extra pair of hands. I might try the noodles next time. Not sure if I will spray or go back to pinning.
I’m so excited for you to try it! I disliked crawling around on the floor so much as it was so tiring. The pool noodles are much easier for sure! Keep me posted on how it goes for you. ✅✂️🤓
Great video. Thank you for presenting. I connect my pool noodles using small lengths (about 10-12 inches) of white plastic irrigation pipe. The pipe is easily inserted or removed when adjusting the overall length of each noodle string. No weakening of noodle end.
I enjoy your videos they are so helpful to me my mama and aunts quilted I can remember when I was a kid hand quilting with my mom I just wish I would’ve paid more attention
Love your idea about connecting the pool noodles! I understand about getting down on the floor, I still have to do that, occasionally. Will definitely do this next time!!! One of my biggest problems about getting down on the floor, is trying to get back up!!! LOL! I also love the idea of using sheets for the backing!!!
A great idea using the pool noodle Thank you for sharing this tip, I shall be buying some noodles and using them from now on as I have always had trouble getting basting right . finding your videos very informative Thank you, Amanda from England G.B.x
New quilter here. Thank you for this this video! I am not able to get on floor to baste it & could not figure out how I was going to because my dining room table is not large enough, you solved my problem, now to get the pool noodles.
I watched a ton of videos about longarm quilting and was in awe about how easy they made basting look - I HATE moving my dining table and spending hours on the hard tile on all fours. I knew there HAD to be a better way - I kept asking my husband about pvc? Something…? Then I found this video! Genius! This is exactly what I had (muddy) in my mind, and now the large quilt I’ve been dreading to baste will be SO much easier. Thank you!!! My back, knees and wrists thank you!!
Thank you Tracey for this tutorial, I’ve have now basted 4 quilts with the pool noodle method and every time I come to the basting I watch your tutorial as a refresher, I didn’t know that there was a top and bottom for the batting either, now you have enlightened me, something I learned today after rolling my Grandsons queen size dinosaur quilt onto the pool noodles, the quilt top and the backing are directional so I had to make sure that before I started basting it that I had the backing matching the direction of the quilt top, lucky that I thought to check on that before hand as I was about to baste the backing upside-down 🤪, and got myself quite confused for a moment, then re-rolled the backing, finally got it right. Now to set up for quilting it. My first sewing experience was when I was seven years old and I wanted to make a dress for my doll, I hounded my poor mum for some material, which she didn’t have as she did not sew, she got so tired of me carrying on she pulled out her Wedding dress which her mother had made and gave me that, which I gleefully began to cut a piece out of, I’m so ashamed that I did that, and my punishment…. I don’t have mums wedding dress that my grandmother made.😔.
*_I also get confused when basting a quilt with pool noodles LOL 😂so you're not alone . Don't worry too much about the dress of your mums.....although I can totally relate...years ago when I was in 6th grade my mom made me a dress that I adored at the time and wore with pride....I kept it for a long time but then one day I was "weeding out" some old stuff.......and I gave it to the goodwill.....needless to say...I totally regret doing that...and wish that I hadn't done that....😟At least we can have the memories of the items....💛_*
I like your video it is well detailed and the instructions are layed out nicely. Thank you. I cut a slit length wise in my noodles and tuck each layer into the noodle instead of using pins.
@snowdrift Me too! In fact, I have been putting off finishing quilts as I get so frustrated trying to keep wrinkles out. Then, on lifting off the table or floor only to find that the backing puckered up as I was pinning! We buy pool noodles every year for the pool, this year extras for me!
I tried this method of sandwiching, what a great resource. I have never put a quilt together faster. I use pinning since I do not care for spraying adhesive. I have found that the larger noodles work the best. Love this procedure and will use from now on. Thank you!
This is a good idea! But I bought an area rug the size of most of my quilts, then I lay it, top side down onto my queen size bed and just pin baste away. You can just maneuver the rug round if needed. No sweat! I've done several large size quilts this way.
Hello I'm also a beginner, your tutorials are great easily explained even take time to respond and answer questions people have. You've got a natural knack for teaching, thank you so much. I'm less intimidated to give sewing with machine a try. I still remember my grandma sitting on the floor and pinning hers. God bless her determination. Thank you again 👏
Thank you thank you thank you for putting together this video. I did two quilt tops in the last week, and one was giving me such a hard time. I left it and tried your method on the second one, and got it done in a quarter of the time.
OMG! I love your pool noodle ideas. I still have a granddaughter’s quilt that I need to finish. Your pool noodle quilt rolling idea is going to be a great MONSTROUS help!
I know Kimberly - once I learned about the batting I had to let people know because no one ever told me when I started quilting!✅ and this method is so simple 💜
Intersting and helpful for everyone with bad knees. I did learn the opposite about batting when i started lingarming. Bumps to the back - then the fuzz won’t be drawn up by the needle Thanks
Wow! I'm a beginner and have watched a lot of video's. I must say this is the smartest thing I have seen on RUclips! You're a Guinness! I'm looking forward to watching all your video's! To be honest..the video's I've watched so far has been for beginners and all of them has been confusing! I saw you with those pool noodles and it aroused my curiosity. I'm so glad I watched because I just learned how to baste a quilt! Thank you so much for sharing this! You are a pro at giving directions!
Thank you for the kind words. I didn’t originally think of this idea- it’s been around for awhile✅ it sure is a lot easier than crawling around in the floor🤓
I love it!! I have been searching for a better way to baste so I am not crawling on the floor hurting my back! Thank you! I will be getting either pool noodles or the things for pipes ASAP! ❤️👍🏻
Thanks so much for this video! My daughter and I are making our first quilt for her dorm room. I was terrified about the process of putting it all together but this made it easy.
Thank you so much for the video. I, too, remember the days of crawling on the floor to finish basting a quilt. You have wonderful uses for the pool noodles. Can’t wait to stock up on a colorful supply of them for future projects. The utility knife comes in handy for all the unique cuts. ❤️🍀
Oh my god. I’ve seen tutorials on this before. But they never showed it as in depth as this. Amazing. I just did two quilts and was ready to cry at the last one.
I am very happy to watch your tutorial clips.thanks a million to share your grate ideas about quilting. They are precious. My name is Ashraf from Iran.
I tried the pool noodle basting method today and it worked like a charm. Before I knew it I was finished on a lap quilt I am making for my granddaughter. Will be using this method from now on. Thank you so much for the video.
I’m so happy to hear positive feedback on this method. It does come together really quick👍🏼✅🤓

Instead of the spray adhesive, I wonder if the school glue method could be used? Love the rolling idea!
I use a spray bast that I get from Hobby Lobby. No fumes AT all works so well
❤❤❤❤ I’m 79 and still am excited to learn new methods. I’ve known about people using pool noodles, but never saw a good demonstration until your video. 😊 I’m eager to try it. Thank you so much for the kind feedback Jeri. I really do appreciate it. The pool noodles definitely are worth it! And so inexpensive too!✅🤓
OMG! You are 80 and STILL quilting? You rock!
Wait, there's a front and a backside to batting? I've been quilting for years and did not know this.
Thank you for linking this tutorial. Now I have no excuse for not basting and finishing my quilt!

As someone who has accidentally pinned a quilt to my carpet🤦🏾♀️, my only large floor space, I so deeply appreciate this quilting life hack! 🙃😆❤️
*_Oh no Amber..you pinned it to the carpet/? (it is kind of funny though....sorry LOL) You will love this hack for sure!!!💛_*

Good husband.
Every time I have used spray basting it doesn't hold good enough to tug my quilt around in my domestic sewing machine.

I had thought my most recent quilt was my last quilt but you have given me hope. I will follow this channel closely.
You are a genius! I don't know how I missed this series! Thank you!
Wow. So much easier, and I love how the pool noodles are so light and flexible. You're an excellent teacher, too. That's a talent in itself. 💜
Thanks so much 😊

The best idea to baste a quilt I've ever seen!
Thank you ✅💜
I just tried the pool noodle method today to do my husbands "man" quilt-holy smacks it was so easy!!! I appreciate you and your genius!!
Thank you so much for coming back on here to let us all know that it totally worked for you!✅
I like to put a dowel Rod inside the noodles so they roll sturdier.
Just got done crawling around on the floor for a full workout to sandwich my latest quilt. Sweating and everything so I was ready to see this.
Crawling on the floor to quilt baste is a nightmare!!!!✅
I love your channel! I just started quilting and I have so much to learn. Thank you for all your videos!
You’re welcome Jo🧡

Tried this method this morning and it worked great! Took me about 20 minutes total to baste a twin-size quilt. Very easy and quick. Thanks a million!
Awesome Mary Anne! This is definitely an easier way ✅ thanks for the great feedback 💛
This is the perfect time of year to stock up on pool noodles at The Dollar Tree! 😀
Yes. Where is part 3? I’d love to see how you put it all together. I’ve made quilts and they’ve been ok but with this brilliant ideathey may be able to satisfy my own hard bar that I set myself. Thanks heaps.

Good tip for knowing which side up the batting is! Great demo with pool noodles too. Thanks

Thank you thank you thank you for putting together this video. I did two quilt tops in the last week, and one was giving me such a hard time. I left it and tried your method on the second one, and got it done in a quarter of the time.
*_Oh that is wonderful sherree5024! I am so happy that it helped you.💜_*
Woman, you are a gosh darn engineer!
I am super impressed, ang glad that your video showed up in my feed.
😂 lol * I’m glad I showed up in your feed too!!!🤓✅
I love watching smart creative people !!🥰💯
You are so kind to say that. I actually remember this method from a RUclips video probably 10 years ago✅
@@TheSewingChannel your so welcome, Its a pleasure to and great these ideas get passed along! Thanks again!
I tried this on the last quilt I made. Game changer for sure. Thank you for posting the tutorial.
*_Thank you so much Christina for posting that it worked for you! Game Changer for sure.✅_*
OMG! I love your pool noodle ideas. I still have a granddaughter’s quilt that I need to finish. Your pool noodle quilt rolling idea is going to be a great MONSTROUS help!
How awesome , no more floor!!! Thank you
*_Yay...no more floor!✅_*
This is so nice. Going to buy some pool noodles tomorrow. Thank you.
You’re welcome 😉
gahhh i love how you explain things! But ive seen many people talk about the basting spray fumes... didn't smell anything with mine lol
I can't believe I have been putting my batting down on wrong all these years. 🤦🏻♀️ Love this method too!
I know Kimberly - once I learned about the batting I had to let people know because no one ever told me when I started quilting!✅ and this method is so simple 💜
Great information. I just moved to a smaller house and don't have a lot of room. I'll try the noodles. Thanks 😊
*_You're welcome Wiley Cat✅_*
I’ve watched more than a few videos on this method and yours is the best! Very comprehensive and easy to follow.
Thank you for the kind feedback 💛✅
I wish you were my high school calculus teacher. You were very thorough.
I am awful with numbers lol. Thank you for the compliment 💛✂️🤓
So glad it was helpful! I’m gettin’ too old for the floor LOL!🤣
Such a neat answer.
She is genius!
Thanks so much for this video! My daughter and I are making our first quilt for her dorm room. I was terrified about the process of putting it all together but this made it easy.
*_Glad it was helpful Stephanie!💛_*
Thank you so much for the video. I, too, remember the days of crawling on the floor to finish basting a quilt. You have wonderful uses for the pool noodles. Can’t wait to stock up on a colorful supply of them for future projects. The utility knife comes in handy for all the unique cuts. ❤️🍀
Wow! This technique is amazing!
Glad you like it!✅and it's so much easier!!!
Oh my god. I’ve seen tutorials on this before. But they never showed it as in depth as this. Amazing. I just did two quilts and was ready to cry at the last one.
I know all to well about crying while trying to baste my quilts!!!👍✅ I’m so glad you found the video helpful✅💛
Thanks so much for sharing this video! It opens up a safer way for me to baste w/o knee pain and it certainly looks quicker than traditional methods.
It is really simple. You’re welcome!🤓🧡
I needed this video today. I have a king sized plane quilt that I was worried about how to make my sandwich. Thank you!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Going to try out this pool noodle technique sounds so much easier than groveling on the floor.
Very interesting. I have never made a quilt but it is in my bucket list. When I do, I will certainly come back to your channel for help.
*_Great! Quilts are fun! Hope to see you back soon ✅🤓_*
I just tried this for the first time...my back thanks you! I was not crawling on the floor and was done quilting a crib quilt in 2 hours! So quick!
Thanks for the feedback!! It really does work smoothly and quickly 👍🏼💜🧡♥️🤓
I'll be trying this tomorrow! Thank you
I am very happy to watch your tutorial clips.thanks a million to share your grate ideas about quilting. They are precious. My name is Ashraf from Iran.
Excellent tutorial. I appreciate your thoroughness.
Thank so much!💛
Thanks so much! Now off to purchase some noodles! 🙂
Keep me posted on how it works for you 🤓✅✂️
WHERE HAS THIS BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE? Why didn't anyone tell me about it?? So easy! I'm going to try your 4 pool noodle trick on my next quilt.
This is a very easy method. The only drawback is if you have an extra large quilt you need a bigger table space. Let me know how it works for you👍✅✂️🤓
You have many easy ideas to make sewing a breeze!!🤩
Thank you! 😊Glad to see you back in the comment section!!!💛
Thanks for this tip I have sewing for about 10 yrs and didn't know this and the noodles help to😍😜☺😃
