Hey, Everyone! I made a follow-up video to answer all of your questions about glue basting! You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/Hw0NFtt8q2k/видео.html
One tip! I have been glue basting for several years. I flatten my glue by just lightly dragging a foam brush over it before I pull over the fabric. That takes care of any issue of a spot showing through a light fabric. Your video is very well done!!
Agree, just tried this method which worked great for me but will brush over next time to ensure no dots of glue. When started before glue dots completely dried worked great, but over time dots of glue dried as hard dots which did not soften or wash out once quilt was finished. Thank you for this technique. Best basting approach for me.
Two months ago I had no desire, much less any idea how, to make a quilt. That’s when THIS video popped up in my RUclips feed. For some reason I clicked on it and watched the whole thing. From there I went to your straight line quilting tutorial. Next day, I went shopping. I have now made two small/medium quilts (plus one rag quilt). Both times I basted with the Elmer’s glue. After finishing my third quilt top, I thought I’d just TRY basting with pins since it seems like that’s how most people seem to do it. Well, I have now ripped out my two lines of quilting, pulled out all those pins, and just finished getting the whole sandwich basted with the Elmer’s school glue. This is the only way I’ll ever do it again. I have no idea why anyone would use pins. If I had tried that first, I probably would’ve never finished the first one, much less ever try quilting again. This method is genius. By the way, thanks to your videos inspiring me in the first place, I am now OBSESSED with quilting.
So you really used the glue method? Im just so nervous about this glue thing. I mean how can the this be something our foremothers would approve of? I guess what I'm saying is don't we want to do this like they did? I don't know what to do. Does anyone else wonder if this glue will hold up over years? Or won't it matter after it's all quilted? I'm 75 and I have this one quilt top I made. I want my quilt to be here to hand down to my grands and greatgrands. I plan on making more quilts too. Ok rant over. I'm the one who has to decide what way to baste it. I'm leaning towards the glue just to get it done quicker and easier
@@marlenejones6266 you don’t want the glue to hold up for years. Your quilting does that job. The glue washes out. That’s what’s so great about it holds everything together perfectly while you quilt and then you wash the quilt and the glue is gone, just like you would taking out the pins after quilting. As for those women of long ago, I feel bad they didn’t have this option. This is the only way I will ever make a quilt. Just try it and you’ll see.
Miriam! Your video on how to baste a quilt using elmers glue has changed my quilting life!!! I have had so many back surgeries, and basting has always been difficult, time-consuming, and terribly painful for me. And then RUclips recommended this video to me. I thought...no way could this work! Well, it did!!! I am so excited to baste more quilt tops! I would get to the basting step and dread would overwhelm me and I would put quilt tops off to the side. So now, its my new favorite step! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this amazing video. It was thorough, informative, and fun!! Love your banter with the kitty! She is beautiful! Following you on Instagram now too!
✨Pam!!!✨ this is amazing!! I’m so glad the glue basting method has been so extremely helpful for you! Thank you so much for letting me know 💖 and thank you for the Kimmie compliment! She’s a babe, and she knows it haha!
I'm going to try this as I don't have much room to baste my quilt, also as you say I get overwhelmed too and leave projects unfinished so I am pushing myself to finish them so that I can move on to the next fantastic idea,. many thanks
Same for me, limited ability to stand for long, but also combined with very small (portable 3x4) foot quilting, backing, you name it space, for creating what I want to do,
I am so happy to see this method and that it can also be done in a much smaller area (space) if necessary, as mine is, My ever part of the process space is a 3x4 folding camp table, at the moment.
Four things: 1- Kimchee is The most Gorgeous cat! 2- I will be buying my gallon of Elmer’s glue. What a great idea, and way cheaper than spray. My favorite way to bind includes glue. 3- thank you for demoing this with a good size quilt, instead of a wall hanging. 4- So excited to be able to make my quilt sandwich off the floor. Thank You!
I have enjoyed watching you demonstrate using Elmer's glue. I hand quilt my quilts, 1. Will this method work for hand quilting, 2. How long does the glue hold. 3. Have you tried it using the hand stitching method on a quilt.
I was very sceptical about this I love making quilt tops but never got around to actually making the finished product Well to try this out I sandwiched two cushions yesterday using this glue and I left them over night I have just quilted them with no problem I just wanted to thank you I now feel confident to finish some of my quilt tops using this method
I'm new to quilting and I am so grateful to you for this video. It shows us that you don't have to spend lots of money and still get the same effect. Kimchi has stolen the show..... I'm sorry! 😄
I have been quilting for years and never once thought of halving my quilt top for measuring its batting. You made this part of my projects easier. Thanks.
I am definitely trying this method of basting my quilts!!! I am disabled and basting is the worst for me! This seems so much more easier and less time and less pain!!! Thank you for this video!! Very well done. New follower!!
I just basted the backing to the batting. I can't believe I did it and I enjoyed it. Pin basting made my hands hurt so much!!! My batting was not from a roll--I purchased throw size 60 x 60. I had to put a pin at the end halfway (on each side of the batting and backing ) to help me center the backing on the batting. Everything went well!!! It went quickly and I didn't have to lock up the cat. You are right--if the glue string is heavy the best way to fix it is with the tip of the bottle. I'm glad this video showed you basting a quilt that is bigger than your table since I did mine on a folding table (72 x 30) I purchased for glue basting. When it dries I'll do the quilt top. Thanks so much. This video is life changing for quilters.
What a great demo - thank you so much. I will definitely be trying this. A little tip; I once saw a RUclips where the lady stuck two wooden skewers on the centre of the table so that she had the centre of top and bottom, and left and right. I find this very useful because I fold my fabric into quarters and then locate the centre by touch and then gently unfold the fabric. It makes it easier to manipulate when using a smaller table. I'm a new subscriber now; your delivery is lovely.
Thank you so much. Particularly showing the physical tasks in full. I can’t believe I didn’t think to fold my quilt when measuring batting off the roll! Can still learn heaps at 70. Love from Australia
Nice tutorial! I have seen people paint brush the Elmers onto the layers for basting, yours seems a bit easier. I do use Elmers for gluing down the binding after it's stitched to the quilt and ready to flip it to the other side. I just put glue down, fold the binding onto it and iron it on to dry the glue fast. Makes it so nice to not have pins and no ripples when sewing. I look forward to seeing your quilting ideas.
Miriam, I used your method of glue basting on my last few quilts. I recently went to a quilt retreat and shared the technique with some of the ladies on a quilt sandwich. Thank you!!! Love it!
AMAZING! Now I know what my daughter means by "life changing." I did this over the weekend and it was so easy and so fast! I quilted it the next day and no problems at all! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
I use to use the Elmer’s glue sticks but sometimes it would tug on the batting , I switched to the liquid and it’s so much easier faster and enjoyable to sandwich my quilts! Also I stock up in July/ August when school supplies go on sale! Great video!!!!
So I just did my first glue basting on a gift quilt and I LOVE IT - I can't imagine basting any other way now that I've done this. Bonus was no extra movement while quilting - no puckering except around edges, so I'll be adding a thin line of glue around the edge from now on. Thank you again for this tutorial and the follow up where you answered questions. Just awesome!
Vikki did you wash your quilt before you gifted it? I am going to try this on a gift, and I don't want any glue showing, but have never washed a quilt before gifting it.
I wash quilts for my daughter as she is allergic to the chemicals in the fabric. She can’t even go in a fabric store without having trouble breathing. I also was baby quilts too because they have such sensitive skin. I tried making quilt sandwiches with Elmer’s glue and it’s great. I love it. I’ll probably use it every time now and I don’t mind washing them because I like doing that anyway
@@hollyyoung2065 Late late answer but yes I do wash my quilts before gifting just because I want it clear these are meant to be used and washed as needed plus I want to remove any color bleed before gifting and I don't wash fabric before sewing. I gift my quilt pre-crinkled:)
It’s the Miriam and Kimmy Show! As a newbie never knew this trick. Great tutorial. It’s wonderful how much you love your pet. I wish this for all pets.
Thank you soooo much for SHOWING the entire process instead of just telling us how to do it. Seeing is believing...and I can't wait to try this. I love your easy going style! I feel I can definitely do this.
This is such a wonderful addition to quilt basting methods. Aand … I loved your jazz interludes, and I was especially touched to see the way you and Kimi get along: mutual respect and love. Thank you so much for caring that she really enjoys quilt basting. You are a great team.
I've been quilting longer than I want to admit and I have never heard of this kind of basting. I love the idea and am definitely going to try it on my next quilt. I like your spiral quilting idea too. I did a spiral with one of my free motion foot attachments and it worked out fine, but it was a wall hanging so I was not dealing with a full size quilt. I really love your relaxed attitude about quilting. Back when I started we had the quilt police patrolling around trying to enforce a lot of quilt laws. I have gradually gotten away from traditional quilting and have done many other things with fabric. But I still like to make a quilt here and there. Right now I am into quilt jackets in the style of Lady Lancaster. If you get a chance, look up her work. She uses old quilts but lately she had been using new quilts with fabulous fabric lines, made with traditional patterns. I am currently working on my first one. I am making small quilts the size of each pattern piece instead of making an entire quilt and then cutting it up. So much fun!! I will definitely use the Elmer's glue method to baste my small quilts. Thanks so much for sharing your technique, and also for letting us see your relaxed style of the entire process. I'm going to enjoy going through your videos!
Oh wow I just looked up Lady Lancaster quilt jackets 😍 I’m in love!!!! Now I wanna try to make one! Haha! I’m so glad you found glue basting video interesting! It really is a game changer for basting. I know the quilt police can be pretty brutal! They still lurk around, but I think there’s been a shift in recent years where people are putting away the strict rules 💖 quilting is supposed to be fun!
@@StitchObsessed So glad you like Lady Lancaster quilt jackets too! She has Mennonite roots as do I. I have been quilting for a long time and the first ones I made were with templates! Not a rotary mat and cutter in sight when I started back in the 80's. I hand quilted them too. I have made tons of quilts since and dreaded the pin basting so much! That toxic spray has never been an option for me because I get headaches from fumes. The Elmer's glue method is an absolute game changer. I'm currently making blocks for my quilt jacket. I cut up an old comforter to play around with a pattern in Lady Lancaster's Aunt Ethel style. I didn't quite get it, but I think I know what to do to get it closer. I mean, wearing a quilt is going to be so much fun. I really like your Cozy Picnic pattern. Your color choices are beautiful. So glad your channel popped up in my feed!
This popped up on my feed and while I’ve never heard of this method I’m subscribing because you went through the physical process and gave lots of tips ~ I appreciate that more than anything ❤
40 years of quilting, but hadn’t heard of this technique . Tried it. Absolutely the most fun I’ve had basting a quilt. ( It used to be the stage I hated the most!) It worked so well! Thank you so much for this video ❤❤
This popped up on RUclips for me today. What a great way to baste. I have tried a few different ways and with the cost of that spray almost doubled this past year I am definitely going to give this a go. I have read through a lot of comments and questions that you answered so I can hardly wait to do this. Thank you for the tutorial. Just hit that “Subscribe” button! 💜
I also love binding my quilts. Basting has always been my least favorite step but maybe not anymore. This method makes a lot of sense to me. Can't wait to try it!
Amazing video. I’m 67 I’ve always seen. But never quilted. I’ve just made my first ever quilt. Just been dreading this part. But you have shown it in a straightforward manner. I think I’m ready to give it a go!!! Thank you so very much!!!!!😊
I will definitely be trying this method on my next quilt! I also got some interesting tips from other quilters in the comments, so thought I'd share a few of my own. 1) I measure my quilt top and add about 5 to 6 inches to determine my backing size. Once that is cut, I fold it (wrong side together) top to bottom, then side to side and mark the inside of the 4 folds with chalk or pencil. 2) I only add 3 to 4 inches for the batting because any pulling during the quilting process pulls all 3 layers. Besides, batting is expensive and I can't afford a roll, so every inch counts. Yes, that only gives me 1.5 to 2 inches extra all around, but it works and any pieces left can be stitched together for another project. 4) I mark my quilt top the same as the backing, except I fold it right sides together and mark the inside of the 4 folds with chalk or pencil. Now when I put it on the batting and backing, I can line up my marks to make sure its straight. Since the batting is sometimes wonky, this will ensure I've got both the top and bottom lined up properly, especially if the backing is pieced and has some straight lines! Works every time. If your markings are hard to see, use a bright colored pin or clip on the backing to help lineup the top. Thanks for a well made tutorial. ❤
I am fairly new at quilting and definitely need to know my side center points. I'm always afraid something will be slightly skewed and noticeable when quilt is finished.
This is great! I’m a professional seamstress who occasional quilts to decompress from the stress of formal alterations. I’m excited to try this method of basting! Thank you!!
Well, I see I am going to have to get my puppy to help me with this process! Your kitty is a great weight so the quilt layers don’t slide off the table! So cute! Animals are just the best. They want to be with us no matter what we are doing!!
I’m 74 & proof you can teach an old dog new tricks. I will never pin again. You just shortened the whole process. I have 4 Christmas quilts I was worried about getting down & it will be a breeze now. You’re the best. The tutorial you did on glue basting was amazing. Thank you so much.
Aww yay, Nancy! I'm so glad you're going to give glue basting a try! It's such a great way to baste and actually makes it fun! Thank you so much for watching! 💖
Great video! Just found you this morning and immediately subscribed. Thanks for all the detailed information. I’ve never heard of glue basting a quilt before. You may have just changed my “quilting life!” Thank you!
I enjoy your basting video. Your voice is just perfect...not shrill and squeeky and doesn't start out loud and by the time the video is over, it can barely be heard. Also, I appreciate The obvious love you and Kimi have for each other. Thanks for the education on gluing. I think I might try it.
Might I also add that I appreciate that your speech is not punctuated by “uhhh” and “mmmk”. You know what you want to say and you say it, without worrying about filling every second with your voice. Regarding the basting, I might try spreading out the streams of glue with a credit card or other solid straight edge. I’m not sure if it would distort the fabric or not, but maybe it would work on a smaller project. Alternatively, I would transfer the glue to a squeeze bottle with a tinier tip. Just thinking. Probably overthinking! What you’re doing seems to work!
I can't wait to try this. My hands are so sore, and I cannot pin baste right now. Your videos are so well-done and informative. Thank you for sharing this technique. I'm old and have been quilting for over 40 years. I have never seen this technique before. I'm excited to try it!
I use Elmer school glue and I think it’s better than the batting with adhesive which does shift on me so I stick with little dots of glue and some heat. Thank you for bringing this technique to a larger audience.
Thank you so much for this video. The spray basting not only creates a huge mess but sets off my asthma so I am so appreciative to find a new way to baste my quilts.
THANK YOU! Glue basting is new to this old lady returning to quilt making. Your "real personality & real in home" means of sharing are comforting and assuring. I'm putting together a Dino quilt for my grandson, who is very excited (Nana can't stop or fail now, lol).. and have pondered on how to baste it. Especially now, being older & not as agile as once was. Your technique is straight forward & simple in which I'm surely going to follow your lead. I've hit the follow button, and will check in regularly, as my next ponder is... oh my, how to "quilt" the layers. I returned to sewing & quilting after many years of "life" and found I'd forgotten alot of the lil tips & tricks...finding there's oodles of hacks out there nowadays (thx to all) Love love the Charmed quilt, everything about it, hoping to retrieve the pattern. Again, thank you, THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for watching, Deborah! And I'm so glad you've found your way back to sewing and quilting. I may be a little biased, but I think it's the best hobby out there! ;) I hope you have fun glue basting and making your super cute Dino quilt for your grandson! That's going to be a treasured gift he'll have forever!
I decided I only liked piecing and the basting and binding not so much. I am definitely going to give it another shot with your method. Wish me luck I'll let you know how it goes 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've always sent my quilt to the longarm quilter, but now that I am retired I want to do the whole process myself. This looks manageable.
THIS is a brilliant idea! At first I thought...huh...but I do use spray glue and cough my lungs out every time not to mention the gross overspray issues so this makes so much sense! Thank you for this wonderful tip! Elma's glue is going to be so much more cost effective than the expensive spray stuff! 💕💕
OMG! What a game changer! This is going to make things MUCH easier for me. I'm moving into my RV full time and irons don't always get along with the electricity provided. I've been using the powder adhesive, which I love, but it's heat activated. Thank you!! 💜
I love your backing fabric 😻. I've tried many ways to baste quilts but not this glue method. I'm very glad to learn it. Wish I had a big table like yours 😅. Thanks for the video 😊 PS...love your kitty helper 🐈⬛
I have to thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I have struggled with quilting in my machine for years. No matter how many pins I always ended up with creases and wrinkles and wonky lines. I just glue basted and finished too quilts this week (actually 3 days from basting to binding). This is a game changer! Both turned out beautifully and NOT ONE WRINKLE! 🎉 Now to master free motion quilting. 😌 THANK YOU!!!
Yay! Oh my goodness I'm so glad!!! I love to hear when someone tries the glue basting and it works well for them! Thank you so much for letting me know!
I learned to quilt about 30 years ago and only learned pin basting. It worked well for me. I used a ton of pins. When I took it up again, I discovered the glue spray. What a revolution! But I was never very comfortable with it as I have asthma, so I always wore a mask when spraying. Now you've introduced me to Elmer's glue basting! Genius! I'll be trying this soon (after I get through my current can of spray glue!). Thanks for a wonderful tutorial! Your method of using your hands to smooth fabric out is how I've been doing all along. Nice to actually see someone doing it. Also, I use little weights to keep my fabric/batting from sliding. 😊
Oh that’s a great idea to use weights! The ingenuity of quilters makes me so happy 🥰👏🏻 thank you so much for watching! I hope you give the glue basting a try and it works well for you! 💖
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! Quilting is such a fun hobby; I hope you love it! I'll be doing an entire series on quilting basics very soon, so stay tuned for that!
Thank you for this! I'm in the process of making my first quilt (still making the top). Pin basting is out of the question and I wasn't really looking forward to using the spray basting. This gives me a nice joint- and lung-friendly alternative.
I have used an Elmer glue stick for my regular sewing with garments and was afraid that I was doing it wrong but you proved that it's a good thing to do. Never thought of using it for quilting. I will start to quilt again. Thank you for this video!
Today is June 15, 2024 and I stumbled on this video and it will be life changing. I hate the time it takes to pin baste and removing them while quilting I tried spray basting and definitely not a fan at all. Thank you for this tutorial.
Today, 17th June 2024, and this is the first time I have ever seen this method of putting a quilt together. I cannot wait to try it. Thank you for your tutorial. ❤ from New Zealand 😊
I’m going to try this. Do you have to wash the quilt after quilting? I’m making a double wedding ring that I will enter in my guilds quilt show next March. If I do not wash can you feel the glue?
@@kathyclark9268 oh that’s exciting! I love wedding ring quilts! I recommend washing after the quilt is complete. Depending on how much glue you use, you might be able to feel it through the fabric.
Just wanted to say, I did the glue method and OMG! It worked. Washed and dried it today and I have alllll the lovely crinkles. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!!❤
I just found you now at 4:04 am in New Jersey USA Thanks to show me the easy way to bating; I am a retired beginner learning quilt with you guys on RUclips. I will follow you for more . I already started looking at your others videos. Have a nice day! Good Luck!
You did a great job illustrating this process. Funny, I’ve never used Elmer’s glue to baste as I’m sandwiching my quilt but I have many time when piecing my blocks before sewing to get really precise piecing. I’m definitely going to try basting your way.
I was successful in glue basting for the first time after watching this video! Thank you sooo much for posting this!! Your explanation took away my fear and I went for it! Success!!
First time here and what a great idea and demo. Will definitely try this method straight away. I have a seldom used ping pong table that has turned into the perfect work space for my quilts in the garage. Thanks for sharing, now I am subscribed.
I absolutely swear by the Elmer’s school glue. IT IS THE BEST. It holds so well, washes out, no pins or basting stitches you have to worry about. It honestly works so well. I don’t use anything but for basting and even stitching pieces together where pins would be required. Great on curved piecing as well. Your seams pop right open to the stitching line for when you want to press your seams open. It should be a staple in every sewing room.
I use this method also. However, I have found that after I have applied the glue leaving the swirls, my machine needle catches in the dried glue lines. I have tried the diluted glue in a spray bottle, but the sprayer gets clogged. So I dilute in a shallow bowl and apply with a brush and lay the fabric over and smooth out, leaving to dry. This works much better. (I agree, the spray is much faster but is more expensive.)
This method will save my knees! I've only been quilting for a little over a year, but learned the best place to pin my quilt sandwich together was on my deck, which is only a short time of the year (and when it's not raining). The glue method means I can make use of even my small tabletop, and don't need to worry about running out of pins, hurting my knees, or trying to beat an incoming rainstorm. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much for this method. I have had a hip replacement and cannot easily get up and down from floor basting mainly using home made basting stray which is very wet and usually needs to be left overnight to dry. You are now one of my quilting hips heroes, thanks again.😍😍
Miriam - I’ve now completed a table covering and a quilt using your glue method and it is definitely a game changer. I love this technique and I love your teaching style. Thank you!❤
WOW! This is the first time I saw your method. Cool! Beautiful quilt work, by the way.❤ Maybe, I can use my limited space. Honestly, the quilt sandwich is the hardest part of my project. Thank you!!
I use the glue to baste very often. Since I always wash my quilts before gifting them or storing them, all the glue is out of the quilt before I store it.
Omg this is going to change my life. I've steered clear of adhesive basting techniques because of the fumes (I have pets and small kids) and 'collateral damage.' This tip is brilliant
Miriam, I really enjoyed watching this video. Maybe it's because you are so matter-of-fact or laid-back, or it may be that you're more of a younger woman like me.... my mother-in-law was an AWESOME seamstress. I worked a full-time job so I never got to learn from her before she passed away. I have since, inherited her machines, fabric and all her paraphenalia. I have watched SO MANY videos/tutorials, written notes, made journals, etc. You are so much "to the point" and so often tell me that I "don't have to be perfect". I just can't be her, I just want to be the best me that I can. I practice, I try, I fail and sometimes I think that I do pretty darn good! Thank you for the Elmer's Glue basting procedure...I'm "all over" that one! WoooHoooooo!!!
Cindy, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos! And I love what you “I just want to be the best me that I can be.” That’s the best goal you can have! I think it’s amazing you have all your MIL hand me downs from sewing and you get to carry on her legacy with your own twist! 💖🤗 remember to enjoy the process and have fun! Sometimes we kind of get lost in the “I must do this perfect” cycle, we forget WHY we’re creating, and the joy that sewing and quilting can bring 💖🥰
Thank you so much , you are the first person I’ve seen baste with glue Brilliant ❤❤❤& to use Elmo s glue , instead of the spray glues . Can’t wait to try myself. Thank you 🙏
I've been quilting for many years but just basted my first quilt with this method. Elmer's School Glue is the absolute best! This technique is life changing! My machine sewed right over it and the best part is it washed right out when i was finished quilting. I have a baby quilt top I'm working on now and you can bet I'll baste it this way.

This video just popped. Thank you so much. I didn't really believe it would work as well as it did for you in the video. Every time I try a new basting technique, it's a bust, at least for me. This has worked beautifully, I can't stop smiling.
thank you for this tutorial. I didn't know Elmers glue could be used to baste a quilt until last week. The idea blew my mind. Usually I pin paste because the spray adhesive makes a huge mess and is expensive. I am going to baste my first quilt with glue today.
I had never used glue for sandwiching my quilts ... Until I watched this two months ago. This is a game changer for me! Thank you for this great video on the process. I also do something one of the commenters said: I use a foam brush to even out any blobs.

I was thinking the same thing. I want to give this a try instead of spray basting. So i like the idea of using a foam brush to go over the glue
Doesn't the glue clog up on the needle in the machine.?
@@diannekirkwood5670 no it does not! 👏🏻
Agree, just tried this method which worked great for me but will brush over next time to ensure no dots of glue.
I'm going to try this as I don't have much room to baste my quilt, also as you say I get overwhelmed too and leave projects unfinished so I am pushing myself to finish them so that I can move on to the next fantastic idea,. many thanks
Same for me, limited ability to stand for long, but also combined with very small (portable 3x4) foot quilting, backing, you name it space, for creating what I want to do,
I am so happy to see this method and that it can also be done in a much smaller area (space) if necessary, as mine is,
My ever part of the process space is a 3x4 folding camp table, at the moment.
Four things:
1- Kimchee is The most Gorgeous cat!
Thank You!
Thank you so much!!! I’m so glad you’re going to try the glue basting! It’s SO much better than spray! 💖
I have enjoyed watching you demonstrate using Elmer's glue. I hand quilt my quilts,
1. Will this method work for hand quilting,
2. How long does the glue hold.
3. Have you tried it using the hand stitching method on a quilt.
Overwintering cloeus😊
I’ve never seen anyone baste with glue before! I love it! I hate the spray adhesive because it goes everywhere and it’s so expensive! Thank you!
Exactly! The school glue is a fantastic alternative!💖
I was very sceptical about this I love making quilt tops but never got around to actually making the finished product
Well to try this out I sandwiched two cushions yesterday using this glue and I left them over night I have just quilted them with no problem I just wanted to thank you I now feel confident to finish some of my quilt tops using this method
@@paulinejames wonderful! I’m so glad it worked well for you! Thank you for letting me know! 💖
I'm just making small landscape quilts that I probably will not wash. Can I leave the glue in the wall hanging?
Thank you for taking the time to show the ENTIRE process. Great tutorial.
You are so welcome! Thank you 💖
I'm new to quilting and I am so grateful to you for this video. It shows us that you don't have to spend lots of money and still get the same effect.
Kimchi has stolen the show..... I'm sorry! 😄
I have been quilting for years and never once thought of halving my quilt top for measuring its batting. You made this part of my projects easier. Thanks.
Awesome! 👏🏻💖
I am definitely trying this method of basting my quilts!!! I am disabled and basting is the worst for me! This seems so much more easier and less time and less pain!!! Thank you for this video!! Very well done. New follower!!
You are so welcome! I hope it works well for you! 💖 thank you so much for watching and subscribing 💖
Yay!!! I'm SO glad it worked so well for you! Thank you so much for letting me know!
That’s a great tip! Thank you for sharing, Carol! And for subscribing 💖
Tooth picks too❤❤
Thank you so much. Particularly showing the physical tasks in full. I can’t believe I didn’t think to fold my quilt when measuring batting off the roll! Can still learn heaps at 70. Love from Australia
Exactly !! this will be SO much easier even on smaller quilts ❤
Cheryl, I found Elmer’s glue at my local IGA in country Victoria 👏👏👏
I love using undiluted Elmer’s glue for basting! Saves money, saves time, and that quilt sandwich won’t shift.
Ugh, I tried the paint brush method before and…never again 😂 the squeeze bottle works great!
Miriam, I used your method of glue basting on my last few quilts. I recently went to a quilt retreat and shared the technique with some of the ladies on a quilt sandwich. Thank you!!! Love it!
I'm so glad it worked well for you! Thank you so much for sharing! I think every quilter should at least try it! It's such a great way to baste!
AMAZING! Now I know what my daughter means by "life changing." I did this over the weekend and it was so easy and so fast! I quilted it the next day and no problems at all! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Yay!!! I’m so glad!!! 💖👏🏻
Oh how have I lived without knowing this trick? Amazing, thank you!
Haha! It’s definitely a hidden technique! I’m trying to spread the word on it cuz it’s truly a game changer!
I use to use the Elmer’s glue sticks but sometimes it would tug on the batting , I switched to the liquid and it’s so much easier faster and enjoyable to sandwich my quilts! Also I stock up in July/ August when school supplies go on sale! Great video!!!!
Awesome! Yeah, that is the best time! I bought a huge gallon jug of it 😂😂 I like to buy in bulk, apparently 🫣
Yay!! I’m so glad it worked well for you and you liked it! Great job!! 💖
Aww thank you so much, Sharon! 💖
Thank you soooo much for SHOWING the entire process instead of just telling us how to do it. Seeing is believing...and I can't wait to try this. I love your easy going style! I feel I can definitely do this.
Thank you so much! It’s super easy and effective! My favorite kind of technique! Haha
This is such a wonderful addition to quilt basting methods. Aand … I loved your jazz interludes, and I was especially touched to see the way you and Kimi get along: mutual respect and love. Thank you so much for caring that she really enjoys quilt basting. You are a great team.
Aww thank you so much! Yeah, I just think it’s adorable how much she loves fabric lol I can’t take that away from her! 🥰🫣
I definitely like to be thorough in my tutorials 🤓 thank you so much for subscribing! 💖
40 years of quilting, but hadn’t heard of this technique . Tried it. Absolutely the most fun I’ve had basting a quilt. ( It used to be the stage I hated the most!) It worked so well! Thank you so much for this video ❤❤
Yay! That’s so awesome, I’m so glad it worked well for you. And yes! It actually makes basting fun 👏🏻💖 thank you for watching!
Thank you for showing this. I have never seen this done before. I can't wait to try it.
You are so welcome! Enjoy!
Awesome! Thank you for watching and subscribing, Kathy! 💖 so glad you found this basting method helpful!
I also love binding my quilts. Basting has always been my least favorite step but maybe not anymore. This method makes a lot of sense to me. Can't wait to try it!
Yay! Thank you for watching! 💖
Amazing video. I’m 67 I’ve always seen. But never quilted. I’ve just made my first ever quilt. Just been dreading this part. But you have shown it in a straightforward manner. I think I’m ready to give it a go!!! Thank you so very much!!!!!😊
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy the glue basting! And congratulations on your first quilt! That’s awesome!!👏🏻 💖
I can’t wait to try this!! It would save so much time rather than pinning. I love the pattern for the top!!! 💛🧡
Kimmie is ADORABLE!!!
Yay! Thank you so much 💖
I finally glue basted a baby quilt. Oh my goodness! I will never pin baste again. Thank you for sharing ❤
Yay!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 💖👏🏻 it’s such a game changer!
This is the first time I have ever heard of using Elmer's glue! I can't wait to try it, you made it look so easy. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips! Thanks so much for sharing and watching! 💖
I am fairly new at quilting and definitely need to know my side center points. I'm always afraid something will be slightly skewed and noticeable when quilt is finished.
Never to old to learn new tricks thanks for sharing ❤
This is great! I’m a professional seamstress who occasional quilts to decompress from the stress of formal alterations. I’m excited to try this method of basting! Thank you!!
Well, I see I am going to have to get my puppy to help me with this process! Your kitty is a great weight so the quilt layers don’t slide off the table! So cute! Animals are just the best. They want to be with us no matter what we are doing!!
Yes!!! They’re the best little helpers 💖
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! The glue basting has definitely changed the game for me! 💖
Me too! I love this. I have a gallon of Elmer’s left over that I was wondering what to use it on Now I have a use for it.
I enjoy your basting video. Your voice is just perfect...not shrill and squeeky and doesn't start out loud and by the time the video is over, it can barely be heard. Also, I appreciate The obvious
love you and Kimi have for each other. Thanks for the education on gluing. I think I might try it.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Yes! Give it a try! It’s such a great way to baste! 👏🏻👏🏻💖
Okay, you talked me into trying this! Thanks for walking us through your process and making it look easy.
Yay! You’ve got this! 👏🏻
Excellent tutorial. I just tried this method on a large (for me) quilt (80”x70”). It worked great!! I’m so pleased with the results.
Awesome! Great job! 👏🏻💖
I can't wait to try this. My hands are so sore, and I cannot pin baste right now. Your videos are so well-done and informative. Thank you for sharing this technique. I'm old and have been quilting for over 40 years. I have never seen this technique before. I'm excited to try it!
You can do it! Thank you so much for watching! 💖
I use Elmer school glue and I think it’s better than the batting with adhesive which does shift on me so I stick with little dots of glue and some heat. Thank you for bringing this technique to a larger audience.
Good to know! I've wanted to try the batting with adhesive, but maybe I'll just stick to my school glue hehe Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. The spray basting not only creates a huge mess but sets off my asthma so I am so appreciative to find a new way to baste my quilts.
Yay! I’m so glad! I hope it works well for you 👏🏻💖
I have been glue basting for a while now and it is a game changer! So much easier on the hands. Thank you for introducing this process to others.😊
Yes!!! I love it so much more than pin basting 😂
I returned to sewing & quilting after many years of "life" and found I'd forgotten alot of the lil tips & tricks...finding there's oodles of hacks out there nowadays (thx to all)
Love love the Charmed quilt, everything about it, hoping to retrieve the pattern.
I do mine exactly like that. I'm about 40 quilts in with glue basting. It has never gummed up a needle and washes out. Great demo!!!!
Thank you so much! Yes! It’s such a fantastic method 👏🏻
Really? I am afraid to try.
The cat is hilarious.
What is there to be afraid of? Try on a scrap square
You’re so welcome! This method actually makes the basting process fun! 🥴👏🏻💖
You've got a new subscriber ! Great demo ! Now I can quilt my smaller projects by myself! Thank you!
Yay, I’m so glad! 💖 thank you!!!
Lol don't you just love cats & their playful curiosity! Good rule of thumb for the bumpy side on the back of your quilt.
Yes! The cost is a HUGE bonus! Thank you for watching! 💖
Thanks for taking the 'fear' outta basting for me. Be Blessed
Yay! I’m so glad! 💖
What a fantastic idea !
I usually use spray basting but it is SO expensive. I’ll be trying this on my next sandwich. Genius
Yes, it is very expensive! Thank you for watching! 💖
OMG! What a game changer! This is going to make things MUCH easier for me. I'm moving into my RV full time and irons don't always get along with the electricity provided. I've been using the powder adhesive, which I love, but it's heat activated. Thank you!! 💜
Oh awesome! So glad you found this helpful! And good luck on your new adventures in the RV full time! That's exciting!
Thank you for the tutorial.
Of course! Thank you for watching! 💖
I’ve been putting off the quilting on a large throw because I hate pin basting. Will definitely give this a try!

I just found you now at 4:04 am in New Jersey USA
Thanks to show me the easy way to bating; I am a retired beginner learning quilt with you guys on RUclips. I will follow you for more . I already started looking at your others videos.
Have a nice day! Good Luck!
Yay! Thank you so much for joining me on this Quilty journey!
You did a great job illustrating this process. Funny, I’ve never used Elmer’s glue to baste as I’m sandwiching my quilt but I have many time when piecing my blocks before sewing to get really precise piecing. I’m definitely going to try basting your way.
Thank you so much! It’s a game changer for sure!
I was successful in glue basting for the first time after watching this video! Thank you sooo much for posting this!! Your explanation took away my fear and I went for it! Success!!
Yay! That makes me SO happy! You did it!!!
First time here and what a great idea and demo. Will definitely try this method straight away. I have a seldom used ping pong table that has turned into the perfect work space for my quilts in the garage. Thanks for sharing, now I am subscribed.
A ping pong table! That is fantastic! Thank you so much for subscribing! 💖
How much do you dilute?
This method will save my knees! I've only been quilting for a little over a year, but learned the best place to pin my quilt sandwich together was on my deck, which is only a short time of the year (and when it's not raining). The glue method means I can make use of even my small tabletop, and don't need to worry about running out of pins, hurting my knees, or trying to beat an incoming rainstorm. Thank you!!!!!
I’m so glad glue basting is going to make such a huge difference for you!!!👏🏻💖💖
Thank you so much for this method. I have had a hip replacement and cannot easily get up and down from floor basting mainly using home made basting stray which is very wet and usually needs to be left overnight to dry. You are now one of my quilting hips heroes, thanks again.😍😍
sorry - basting spray and quilting tips - typing not my strong point!!!
🥹🥹 I’m so glad!!! You just made my day! I’m SO glad this method is going to help you baste your quilts without pain! 👏🏻👏🏻

That is awesome!!!👏🏻 I’m so glad the glue basting worked so well for you! Thank you so much for letting me know! 💖💖
WOW! This is the first time I saw your method. Cool! Beautiful quilt work, by the way.❤ Maybe, I can use my limited space. Honestly, the quilt sandwich is the hardest part of my project. Thank you!!
You’ve got this! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! 💖
I absolutely love this idea! I love all your content too🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much 🤗
I use the glue to baste very often. Since I always wash my quilts before gifting them or storing them, all the glue is out of the quilt before I store it.
Awesome! I love it! Definitely my favorite basting method. 💖 thanks for watching!
Just made my first quilt last weekend - wish I saw this video first!! Saved for future reference. Thank you!
Wow awesome!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! 👏🏻💖
She’s so cute
Omg this is going to change my life. I've steered clear of adhesive basting techniques because of the fumes (I have pets and small kids) and 'collateral damage.' This tip is brilliant
It is such a fantastic alternative to that spray adhesive! I hope you like it as much as I do!
How bout you take the cat totally out of the picture!
Lol she eventually left 😂
She mentioned she's so kind-hearted, she can't.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching!
I tried this process and I love the outcome. Thanks
Yay! So glad to hear that! 👏🏻👏🏻
Kimmy is beautiful! I love the idea of using Elmers glue! I have a gallon jug of it since I was using so much for paper crafts last year.
Oh, Kimmie KNOWS she’s a babe 😂 and awesome! I buy my glue in jug form too 😂
I've been quilting for many years but just basted my first quilt with this method. Elmer's School Glue is the absolute best! This technique is life changing! My machine sewed right over it and the best part is it washed right out when i was finished quilting. I have a baby quilt top I'm working on now and you can bet I'll baste it this way.
Yay!!! I’m so so glad you enjoyed this method! You’re not kidding; it IS life changing! 👏🏻👏🏻 thank you for the update!

This was the absolute best tutorial I have ever watched! You were very clear, concise, easy to understand and complete. I also watched your video tutorial on quilting on a domestic machine - LOVED IT! I can’t wait to try it. Keep these tutorials coming and THANK YOU!
Wow, thank you so much 🥹💖💖💖 so glad you’re enjoying the tutorials!!!
I had to come back after trying this and THANK YOU! I will be using the Elmer's Glue method going forward.
Yay!!!! 🥳👏🏻 I’m so glad you tried it and liked it!💖💖
WOW, love the way you measure out the batting from the roll! Definitely going to that.
Yeah! 👏🏻 it works great! 💖
Wow, just used this method. No holes in my fingers👌from pins. No smell 🤭. No sticky over spray 😱. No gummed up needle 😀. My mind is 🤯. Thank you so much for this video. 😎 ❤ 😃
Hurray!!! So glad it worked well for you! Thank you for the update! 💖
Love your table and chairs!!!
This video just popped. Thank you so much. I didn't really believe it would work as well as it did for you in the video. Every time I try a new basting technique, it's a bust, at least for me. This has worked beautifully, I can't stop smiling.
Yay!!! I’m SO happy you like the glue baste method! 💖
thank you for this tutorial. I didn't know Elmers glue could be used to baste a quilt until last week. The idea blew my mind. Usually I pin paste because the spray adhesive makes a huge mess and is expensive. I am going to baste my first quilt with glue today.
Awesome! Good luck with your glue basting; you’ll do great! 💖
I had never used glue for sandwiching my quilts ... Until I watched this two months ago. This is a game changer for me! Thank you for this great video on the process. I also do something one of the commenters said: I use a foam brush to even out any blobs.
Wonderful! I’m so glad you tried it and liked it! 👏🏻💖
Thanks for the detailed, yet down-to-earth video! I plan to try this method very soon!
Yay! I'm so glad you're going to give it a try!
