WOW!! I live in a really small space and there is so little room to quilt. I'm ALWAYS looking for tips and tricks. I feel like this is the most helpful video I've found!! Thank you so much for posting this.
You are so welcome! My back just couldn't handle basting on the floor anymore, and no matter how careful I was I always ended up with tucks in the backing fabric.
Everyone who quilts at home should watch this very helpful video! Every step is clearly demonstrated and explained. This will help me sandwich the 25 large quilts tops I have which are waiting to be quilted. Thanks so much for the time, thought and effort that went into making this video.
Omi, I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! I used to really struggle to finish my quilts because I found basting to be so uncomfortable and unmanageable.
I don't have as many as you do but I do have several that need to be finished. I'm brand new at quilting and sewing so the whole basting and quilting process still scares me to death.
I’ve watched probably hundreds of videos still in search of the best way to baste a large quilt. You’ve shown new techniques and tips I’ve not seen before. Very helpful!! You inspired me to keep pressing forward and to get those UFOs finished. Thank you!
I can't express how grateful I am for this video! I am in the process of making a memory quilt. Having never quilted before I have been struggling with trying to make a quilt sandwich. It's queen sized and I cannot get down on the floor. My knees and back will not allow it. You're perfect explanation and demonstration have given me the confidence to do this! Thank you!!
I have been quilting for years and always laid it on the floor and hand basted. I have avoided pin basting but watched your video and tried it today on a larger quilt and it worked great. I will never go back to crawling on the floor. No more sore knees!! Thanks for posting
I have two folding tables in my basement so i can spread out my quilt and hand baste it. Keeps the back smooth. I use thread ends of spools and bobbins. But i love how you put registration marks to keep it in line. Genius!
An excellent video! It is very help that you used both the small sample, as well as a large quilt, in demonstrating your basting method. Thanks for sharing!
I watched this awhile back and was so delighted to see how I can baste my quilt on a table! I'm a new quilter. Thank you so much for the clear and helpful tutorial.
Thank you sooo much for these instructions. I’ve. Made a queen size quilt with doily’s on top and was really struggling to put the layers together with pins and basting spray. I took it apart and did it following your instructions and it’s beautiful. So grateful.
Thanks! I struggle with making my quilt sandwich to prepare for thread basting. I’ll try your marking and rolling mine next time … more than anything, I don’t have a large table … putting a cutting mat under the project to protect the table is a great tip!
I have just watched your video, and my goodness what an eye opener. I have only been quilting for about a year and this is my hardest and dreaded part. Thank you so much for your gentle tutorial.
I'm planning on filming a video on some unconventional hand quilting with the quilt that you see in this video. I'm also thinking about doing a video about my portable quilting frame, but I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in that.
Superb tips, thank you so much. I have a giant hawaiian quilt top in the making, i hand sew everything and was dreading crawling on the floor to baste it. It’s over 10 ft in length and width. I love that i wont need pool noodles or spray baste but can easily handle it without borrowing a friends large lounge floor! Fiona.
10 feet? Wow! I think, with a quilt that big, you're going to want to recruit a basting buddy. I wish I could see your Hawaiian quilt! Are you on Instagram?
omg, i've been putting off quilting a king size top because i was having difficulty with the sandwiching. brilliant demonstration with a very calm voice, love that i don't need extra tools either. will definitely be giving this a try. thank you.
Thankyou for this. I’m a novice and I thought it was going to be impossible at first but then it all came together. Now I just need help keeping my cat off it.
I was looking for a way to thread baste a quilt without the pool noodles because of size, thank you so very much for sharing your technique. I'm so excited to use it. My UFO for this month is to baste my grandmothers flower garden quilt. Thanks again!
Thanks for this. It is very helpful. For the first time, I cannot get down onto the floor to baste and I have been searching for some helpful hints to baste using my dining room table.. I was almost there. Your video gave me that last few bits I needed.
7:00 if you are basting and not going to use it to snuggle under or sleep with or wash your quilt or hang your quilt before you are done quilting it doesn't really matter how far apart the pins are located. But if you baste and snuggle (or nap) with your quilt and decide to wash it during the quilting the process, spacing does matter. And it depends on your batting... look on the bag. It will say something like... quilt no further than 4-inches apart. And that's the spacing you need to have your basting. Personally, l tie my quilts as the basting (so my toes don't get caught in the basting threads whilst napping) and then quilt as I'm in the mood.l can use it and not worry about washing it. 💖🌞🌵😷
I tie a quilt exactly the way it's shown in the video, except half way between the stitches, l snip the threads and tie the ends in a knot. I use yarn but that's because l know it's going to get washed several times before the quilting is completed. 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you for this. I've basted 3 huge quilts on the floor and it killed my knees, wrists and back. I thought about the pool noodle method, but have not been able to get them yet. I would love to see how you thread basted your quilt. My grandma had a huge wooden quilt frame that was used to quilt on. That was fun, but took up a lot of room.
Thanks for subbing! 😊 I'll try to make a quick video about thread basting the next time I hand quilt! I have a Christmas project in mind that might work.
Basting is a temporary way to secure your quilt layers for quilting. There are several different methods. In this video I show pin basting and thread basting. Recently I've become very fond of glue basting. It's quicker and easier, but a little bit messier. Hope that helped. I've been planning a free "Absolute Beginner Quilting Course" and I'm hoping to start filming soon. I'm just waiting on some equipment.
I think it would be helpful if you flipped it over so we can see the back free basting. Mi pin baste and a lot of times double bat and it is such a pain. Most tables are too thick for the binder clip method and you also need space as well which I don’t have. I’m a fanatic of having no folds or bubbles on the backing because i densely machine quilt.
I use old polyester thread I inherited from my grandmother. I always try to use a color that won't blend in with the quilt top. That way it's much easier to remove from the quilt top when the time comes.
I use anchor stitches or knots at the beginning and end of each thread. You could also add extra anchor stitches throughout if it makes you feel more comfortable. I've never had a problem with puckering because I only thread baste when I'm going to hand quilt. But I think I would have a problem with puckering and bubbles if I machine quilted my thread basted quilts.
Is this how you would hand quilt your quilt as well by starting each row from the middle out, then moving it to the left n the right on a table?. Beginning At the 8:09 mark on your video.
When hand quilting I start in the middle and work outwards in a spiral. This prevents tucks and bubbles as you work and keeps your quilt nice and flat. You could also work row by row, but I'd start with the middle row. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions! 👍

I am in the middle of trying to thread baste a king size quilt and my jaw hit the floor when I saw how you thread baste! OH MY GOD, THANK YOU!!!!
You are so welcome! This method was a game changer for me.

I’m new to this and was wondering what basting was.

Love this technique. Just finished hand piecing my first king size quilt. Getting ready for basting. What kind of thread do you use to baste?
I use old polyester thread I inherited from my grandmother. I always try to use a color that won't blend in with the quilt top. That way it's much easier to remove from the quilt top when the time comes.
Do you use one layer or two for the batting?
I only use one layer of batting for my quilts. The winters here are rarely cold enough for two layers. 😊
When you thread baste… are there periodic knots to stabilize movement? If not wouldn’t the sandwich pucker? Please advise thank you
I use anchor stitches or knots at the beginning and end of each thread. You could also add extra anchor stitches throughout if it makes you feel more comfortable.
I've never had a problem with puckering because I only thread baste when I'm going to hand quilt. But I think I would have a problem with puckering and bubbles if I machine quilted my thread basted quilts.
what is that quilt pattern called. I love it.
It's Michigan by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. it was a mystery quilt from a few years ago.
I use a bag a beans to hold down my project so it does not slide off the table.
