Wow! Lots of great ideas! My only disagreement is that I find Creative Grids rulers the best. I am left-handed and they have numbers & lines in both black and white, going in opposite directions so I can use it easily. Also the white lines show up on dark fabric. Thanks for the ideas.
That was so fun. I want it all! I put the magic puzzle on my wish list. That looks like fun.
I really meant to make this a very short video, but it got away from me. 😳 I’m going to add some chapters here so you can skip around a little if you want. Or you could skip the video and go right to the video description. ❤ Hope this helps! ❤ 00:00 Intro 01:02 Ruler Stuff 03:40 Small Tools / Supplies 05:37 Pain Saving Tools 06:37 Reading Material 08:20 Lighting 09:18 Quilt Displays 10:43 Quilt T Shirts 11:50 Quilt Puzzles & Mystery Puzzle 12:58 Quilt Kits 15:33 Quilt Design Software 16:52 Silver Thimbles 17:46 Sewing Machines 18:28 Local Ideas
Nice test. I use gray for piecing unless all fabrics are cream or white. I have been quilting for 50+ years and once I found monofilament thread, that is all I use for quilting. I have the dark and clear and have never had any problems with breakage. You just can’t hold a hot iron to the quilt for a long period of time, not that you would ever do that.
Interesting! How does monofilament hold up with repeated washings? Or do you only use it for wall hangings and things that won't get washed?
@ most of my things are wall hangings but I have washed some with no problems.
I've been doing this for years. The best disappearing thread is 100wt Poly Wonderfil. Usually white or off white will do the trick since most background is light. DON'T OVER THINK IT - 100 wt. Wonderfil is the way to go when you don't want the threat to show
Honestly... I had no idea that there was 100wt thread! Does it break easily? I'm not even sure if my local quilt shops carry it because I've never known to ask for it. Thanks for the tip!
I like to use a variegated thread with the colours of the quilt as much as possible. I really like the KIng Tut variegated threads.
If I wanted the quilting to be less noticeable on this quilt I think I would have tried a light pink colour
Your right, pink would have blended nicely. But I'm trying to figure out one or two go-to colors that I can use on everything, because I'm lazy. 😊
I use Omni by Superior and the color that blends well with both dark and light fabrics is called Goose. I use that when I have a quilt with high contrasting fabrics.
Oh, interesting, I was expecting a grey color, but it's a little more taupe-ish. I'm going to add it to the description of this video so future viewers can take a look!
On this one, I'd use pale pink. Maybe it's my old eyes, but I see very little difference in the three on this top. With a quilt top of these colors if you want it to disappear, just use something one shade darker than the fabric that is the majority and the it will only disappear where it is on the fabric of that color.
Yeah, the effect is very subtle. Disappointingly so. I was hoping for a bigger difference based on what I had read in the quilting discussion group. I agree a pink would work really well here, but I'm looking for one or two colors that I can use for everything because I'm lazy. I probably won't ever find that "perfect" color, but so far I'm enjoying the search!❤️
I'm still an Uber newbie but I saw a video that someone uses celery colored thread and I have been using that and it's great
Interesting! Is it a very saturated bright celery or more of a muted pale celery?
Uhm, the seam guide, is it just a piece of tape or does it have like a ledge? Where are you supposed to look while sewing, at the needle or your hands, or past the needle? How does the fabric stay together if you don’t backstitch? When you chain sew, how are you not attaching the first pair to the second pair, how did you get the space between?
Seam Guide: The seam guide I use has a bit of a ledge (maybe around a 1/4 inch, not sure). If you're making your own seam guide from painters tape or masking tape I would recommend a similar height. I like that I can bump my fabric up to the ledge because I don't have to constantly monitor the edge of my fabric. Where to look: When I sew I don't just look at one place. If I sew and look only at the needle I get a little hypnotized and zone out. 😅 If I'm sewing directly on a line I'll look at the needle more often, but mostly my eyes are roaming around. I'm making sure the fabric is feeding correctly. I'm making sure my fabric is not becoming misaligned. I'm also making sure that my fabric is touching my seam guide. If I'm using pins or clips I'm making sure they don't get in the way and I don't sew over the pins. It sounds like a lot of things to pay attention to all at once, especially when you're a new quilter. That's why I suggest new quilters sew slowly until they get more comfortable with the process. Why no backstitch: When you sew two blocks together, finishing the raw edges, you're also securing your line of stitches. If you're more comfortable backstitching, go ahead. There are no right or wrong ways to sew. Backstitches might just come with some extra challenges down the line. Chain Sewing: When you chain sew you don't take your foot off the pedal until you've stitched passed the edge of the fabric, creating a little chain of stitches that go past the edge of the fabric. This will result in a pretty tight chain, not much of a gap between your pieces. If you want more of a gap you could lift your presser foot and pull your piece forward by hand, get your next piece ready, put the presser foot down, and continue sewing. I chain stitch both ways. ❤️ I hope this was helpful! Thanks for watching! ❤️
This is so helpful!
Glad it was helpful! There are tons of fun notions out there for sewing and quilting, but I wanted to boil it down to the most important tools for new quilters so they wouldn't get overwhelmed.
My first video of yours was the folding one and I really like that you talk slowly and softly. I’m just learning and all the ladies have been talking like they’re giving a speech at 100 miles an hour.
😊
It will make a big difference whether or not you are making a quilt that will be washed and dried or not. I could see how the gray would blend in more if the quilt was washed and dried whereas a display quilt or wall hanging would still have the stitches on the surface of the quilt. So that may be why you don't see a big difference here in your test run.
Yes! That is a great point. ❤️ I was planning on hanging this little test on my wall, but now I might need to give it a wash and see what happens...
For thread to “disappear” it needs to be slightly darker than the overall color of your quilt so that the quilting looks like a shadow when it sinks into the batting. An alternative is to match your background fabric. My favorite Aurifil 50 wt colors are 5004 Grey Smoke, 2340 Cafe au Lait, 2600 Dove, 2000 Sand, 2420 Fleshy Pink, 1147 Light Leaf Green, 2835 Medium Mint (great for Tula Pink), and 2805 Light Grey Turquoise (can appear grey, blue, or green depending on the fabric). I’d call the last four chameleon colors because they can take on the appearance of your fabric. As someone who almost always uses prints and not solids, I’d say audition diverse colors for quilting thread because you never know what will look great. I have a couple of chameleon Gutermann 50 wt cotton threads that I can’t get to for their numbers tonight. If you buy Gutermann and would like the numbers, let me know. On screen your quilting stitch looked a little short. I like to use 2.5 to 3.0 on my Bernina machine. I use the shorter 2.5 when I’m concerned that cat claws might catch in the threads. I enjoyed your video.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is excellent information! I'm going to pin your comment so it's easy to find. I'm also going to add links in the description of this video to the thread colors you mentioned because I personally had a hard time picturing them and think it could help future viewers to see the colors with their own eyes and then look for similar colors from their favorite brands. P.S. The default stitch length for my machine is 2.5, but I always bump it up when I'm quilting. Thanks again for this awesome comment. I'm sure I'll be coming back to it again and again!
Loved your testing with all three lines in a row. Easy to see the difference thanks
Thank you! I actually like it enough that I'm going to bind it and hang it on my wall!😊
Im not sure why you would think gray would 'disappear' into the fabric.. thread no matter the color is going to be visable , exceptions to that would be if the thread is the same color as the fabric or the same saturation value or if u are using invisible nylon
Yeah it was definitely wishful thinking based on how the other quilters were talking! 😊 They used words like blend, disappear, and magic. So it got my hopes up!
I use Glide 40 thread Cool Grey 3 for quilting. I also like Superior So Fine 50 503 when I want a light weighted quilt, but I can't quilt as fast with So Fine as it has a tendency to break if I'm turning a corner quickly, for example. As a bonus, I love to use Superior So Fine 50 503 or 504 for piecing.
When I use the Glide 40 are u using it in the Bobbin as well?
@@UsernameUnkwn21 I use Glide 60 in the bobbin for piecing and also quilting with Glide 40 or So Fine 50 on top. I use the Cool Grey 3 also with 60 weight for the bobbin. I rarely have to use another color for the bobbin. It has to be a pretty dark quilt back for me to switch.
Thank you for this great info! I'm going to track down your recommendations and add them to the video description for future viewers! Thanks! ❤️
@@ThimbleStorm 😊
I also have used Glide 40wt Cool Grey 3 on many of my quilts
Interesting 💐
Cute sticker!💕
Thank you! 😊
Love your fabrics where you getbthem atsome places are super expensive like shabby fabrics online ty so much
Most of the fabric I buy is sale fabric. Then I fill in with full price fabric if it fits the quilt I'm working on. I have a limited budget so I like to make it stretch. If you look in the description of my videos you'll find my favorite online shops. FQS specifically has FANTASTIC sales! Check out the flash sale page and the precuts of the week page. At local fabric stores I like to keep my eye out for fat quarter sales and end of bolt sales. It helps if you follow your local quilt shop on Instagram or Facebook. I hope this helps. 😊
Really like your use of scraps and the scrappy border too! Your videos are very enjoyable and interesting. Thank you
Thank you so much! 😊 I like that scrap quilting often makes you think outside of the box. I did a scrappy border because I didn't have enough of any one fabric. And I love how it turned out!
So thoughtful for you to want to do that for your mom, i wouls be interested in buying the FPP pattern, just be prepared alot of people to steal patterns and resell as their own :(😢
My mom is my favorite person to make things for because, as a crafter herself, I know she'll value all the thought and effort I put into each project. ❤️ PS I'll make a short video when I update my shop. It probably is likely that the templates might get pirated eventually. I've heard a lot of horror stories from Etsy shop owners. Maybe the price point will be low enough that no one would bother.
Wow, awesome pillow design!!!
Thank you!😊 I'm really pleased with how this one came out. I'm on a bit of a FPP kick.
That’s how I do my fold too. Iron fabric flat first it makes it flatter
If you haven't seen her already, watch Warped Spinster once. She does major improve... you kind of remind me of her. By the way, your work is quite unique, and beautiful!
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to go look her up!
You can pick up a carpenter's square at Home Depot for under $10. I have used my extensively for squaring up. Hope this helps =)
Great Tip! I'll have to look around.❤️
I really, really like your work! Your solution to the center is almost-but-not-quite the brilliant technique of foundation paper piecing. The fact that you came up with this on your own shows how good your instincts are. I’m going to repeat what lots of folks have said: you are being waaaay too hard on yourself. If you like what you’re making, you’re doing it right. The whole idea of improvisation is that there are not strict rules. Make the quilt that you want to make, and try not to worry about what other folks are doing. And be more accepting of your ideas and your process. I promise, the quilt police do not have you on a watch list!
Thank you so much! ❤️ I laughed out loud when I read "I promise, the quilt police do not have you on a watch list!" Hilarious! 😆 I think it's hard to find the line between healthy criticism and unhealthy criticism. Without healthy criticism it's hard to grow and improve and with unhealthy criticism it can be really hard to stay motivated and try new things. It's definitely something I need to work on!
Love it
I love your work, but am very concerned you will slash yourself with your rotary cutter grip. I really love your work.
Thanks for worrying about me, but I promise I have it under control. I'm a bit of a worrywart so I am very mindful every time I use my rotary cutter.
Check out that rad ruler work!
Such cute polka pumpkins! Love the color scheme!💕🎃
Thank you! 😊
I've been quilting over 20 years, these pieces are beautiful! When I was younger I worried more which way was right, now I do what I want cause there are NO rules to quilting! I would consider this totally improv drawing or not its coming from your imagination and creativity! Keep on sewing and just enjoy the process, even the frustrations!
Thank you so much. ❤️ I've been quilting for a long time too, but I'm still relatively new to improv. I'm hoping to do a lot more of it in the future because I want to start working on more original designs.
Your blocks are strikingly beautiful! Your improv work is special! Enjoy yourself as you create!!
Thank you! I always enjoy the process (and using up the scraps), but I think I need to work on not comparing myself to the more advanced improv quilters. 😊
This is how sampler quilts came to be. Either making a sample (swatch😅) for a customer or yourself before committing to the cost of a quilt.
Excellent point! I wish I had known about sampler quilts when I first started quilting!
Definitely landscape😊
I still can't decide! I keep waffling. Maybe I should pick out where I want to hang it and then let the space decide.
It’s beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Forget the rules and forget the quilt police 💖😉 do your own thing , it’s very liberating , only you need to like it . Your work is stunning
So true! That's the advice I would give other people, but it can be so hard to apply to my own experience. 🥲
Your design is amazing. It is SPECTACULAR!
Thank you so much! 😊
So pretty!
Thank you! 😊
It’s improv with or without a sketch. According to the improv class I took.
Thank you! ❤️ Improv seems to incorporate so many different things I have a hard time figuring out what is improv and what isn't. I would LOVE to take an improv class! There don't seem to be any in my area and all the big quilt shows are too far away. I think I'm going to look into getting some improv quilting books. 😊
Quilting should be fun! If you're having fun, that's all that counts. I think what you've done is great!
That is a "rule" I need to remember! I should write it down and pin it on the wall!❤️
You do awesome! Be more confident!!! Love the quilt as you go. It is special! You do great!!
Thank you so much! That's definitely something I need to work on. Maybe I should make it next years resolution.
You are not giving yourself enough credit. Your small purple improv piece is so nice. Put a binding on it and be proud!! And your sketches are excellent improv beginnings. Stop saying the “put down” comments and start believing in your abilities because your improv designs are awesome!! ❤
That purple piece would be a great pillow or a zippered pouch. So many possibilities.
I really thought my efforts were very mediocre, but after all the kind comments on this video I think I've been suffering by comparing myself to other quilters. I need to practice being kinder to myself. 😊
I've been meaning to do a mini quilt wall for quite awhile... Maybe I should finally bind it up and get started!❤️
I enjoyed your process. The outcome looks great in all 4 orientations, especially landscape. Clever solution to middle section. Looking forward to what you next create.
Awesome, thank you! I have no idea what I'm going to do next. I need to take some time and make a plan.😊
I love both pieces, the quilt as you go, and the wedge piece. For the wedge, I prefer the landscape orientation. It seems to have more movement, and the wedge itself reminds me of a spotlight at a movie premiere. I love how you problem solved, and had the courage to share your thoughts and process, not knowing how things would turn out. I think you have great potential as an improv quilter, and I hope you continue to explore improv quilting. Do what makes you happy, and don't worry about how others will receive or perceive your designs. Your style is your own. Be proud of it.
❤️❤️❤️Thank you so much for your kind words!❤️❤️❤️ I'll have to look at the piece again to see the spotlight, that never occurred to me. I was thinking of it as more of a rip or tear. I think that's one of my favorite things about improv quilting, it's open to interpretation. Everyone who views it brings a different perspective to it and I think that's lovely. I plan to continue improv quilting, but I'm not sure when I'll work up the courage to do a full sized quilt. For now I'm going to stick with mini quilts and scraps.😊
