This is really a neat concept, especially for anything you want to hang. Personally, I have never see this technique even though I have been sewing for over sixty years. This is a hack I will definitely use a lot. Thanks for sharing.
I've been waiting for someone to show something different that's easy. I hate the old binding methods, too much trouble. Thank you so much for this idea, I'm trying it right away on a baby blanket.
I love this!! I have struggled figuring out how to bind for so long, some techniques have you have one giant long binding strip that you fold backwards and forwards around the corners and it has confused me but this is so crisp and beautiful, I have to try it on a project I've had waiting for finish for 5 years. I am ready for the freedom of having a project finally complete! Thank you and God bless you! I look forward to learning all I can from you! :)
I did this facing once on a large quilt-as-you-go baby play mat I made. The quilt was so thick that ordinary binding would be very difficult to sew on but this facing idea was ideal. It worked great. I sewed mine down with the machine so everything was reversable and nothing could catch and tear because it was made to throw on the floor for baby to roll around and play on. Love your cat, looks lovely.
Sheri, I’ve watched this a couple of times and am sure now that I’m going to try it out on my grandson’s Steampunk wall hanging I’m making for his birthday in May. Then I will do it on my latest project, a throw that is about 58 x 58. The border of the throw is small squares and a regular binding would take up too much space. Thanks for the video, it is a great option!
I have been using facing for my table runners 1) I can quilt them out flat (unlike with pillowcasing) 2) I can match the facing to the border so the front and back match, and 3) no bulky binding corners . The gap in the facing corners eliminates the bulk. Love this! Plus you can feel the edge of the facing as you topstitch on the front so you never stray into the backing fabric.
You know that you can use Elmer's water soluble washable glue to baste things which is much less expensive than the spray-base. I do it all the time. It washes right out and fluffs right up. At first washing. My needle has no problem going through dried glue and as a bonus it acts like fabrics stabilizer when quilting.
I am going to try this in reverse, on a baby quilt. I will make the binding strips a little narrower, the corner triangles a little smaller AND THEN I will apply the facing to the back and fold it over to the front. Then I can do edge stitching and/or top stitching all the way around to secure the binding. Thanks for the idea and clear instructions.
RUclips put your video on my feed and I'm glad it did. I've never seen this before, but it looks great for this project. Your tutorial was easy to follow, plus, no binding join needed! Thank you for sharing this option!
Thank you for the suggestion of using painters tape for straight line quilting! I needed that idea and this brain does not figure things out anymore, getting old, lol.which is so aggravating because that used to be one of my best parts. Also the technique of facing the darling cat wall hanging.
Hi Sheri. I love your adorable wall hanging. Thank you for showing how to do 'facing' . It's perfect for the wall hangings... if I find it easier I might do it on a quilt. Beautiful cat... thanks fir the chat and hugs
I love this method. I want to do this with a fleece blanket to embellish it with the corners a print and the facing a solid and on the front instead of the back. Thank you.
Wow, it’s beautiful. I’ve never ever seen this done in all the years I’ve quilted. Thank you. Would like to try this and like someone else said, I may reverse it too.
You just showed everyone how to finish clothing! I don't quilt! But did take a free motion class to learn how to do decorative sewing. I dont always straight hem unless a stabie woven but especially knits. I make facings like this but still call it binding! I started never folding at seam! I fold over seam! I sometimes do a single fabric not folded if making a large cuff. This is also how to do easy shawl collar on a jacket! I cut many tops including sweatshirts especially okd ones or from thrift straight up front. Slightly V neckline. Add sawlmcolkar and matching cuffs! I also hem unstable knits with a more stable tshirt material cut across non stretch direction! Besides fitting to you at sides that all you do to finish clothing remakes.
I am a seamstress/quilter and I love this idea! I hate binding my projects because it takes so long. I switched to the quick flip method where you do each side separately. I love it because I starch my strips before sewing them which makes for an excellent foldover but the corners never looked pretty. Adding the corner triangles return the pretty to my bindings. I LOVE THE FACT THAT YOUR BINDING DOES NOT HAVE TO MATCHY MATCH WITH THIS METHOD! I do a lot of scrapping for my backs so I can now frame my backs with this technique. THANKS MUCH...LOVE THE CAT!
Your tutorial was easy to understand and I like the technique as a different option instead of binding. I truly enjoy binding my quilts the traditional way although it took many projects before I wasn't intimidated by the process. Practice makes it easier! This is the first of your videos I've seen... following you now.
i am so glad I found this quilt facing method! Thank you! Yes, I would have either hand stitched it down in back, and yes, A slightly narrower facing would be nice. I am a very experienced sewist, but always learning new things. I like listening to and watching you and you are a pleasant person. I have subscribed!
I am loving this technique and will try it on my next quilt. I think it would look lovely putting those triangles on the front also. Thanks for sharing!
If that was a contrasting fabric ..attached to the back and flipped to the front it would be an excellent frame …this was inspiring. I would definitely machine stitch it. Thanks for sharing.
Love this facing technique! I make a lot of smaller wall hangings and am always looking for a nice looking finish. I will definitely be trying this finish technique out. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness Sherri!! This is amazing! Im fairly newish to quilting. Everything I have learned was from you tube videos. I am one of those who haven’t mastered binding. I have heard if facing and my quilt guild did a short program on it but I didn’t understand it. Thanks so much!! Great option!!
This is brilliant, if you sew the binding on the back first an a different colour from front will make a lovely & different binding on the front. Makes binding a whole lot easier. Thank you ❤😊
What a fab alternative to binding, such a pretty design and it's always surprising how effective straight line quilting is, it really adds so much to the finish - I will be trying the row of stitching at the edge and I love how the corner pieces can also double up as hanging pockets!
i've faced a piece of fabric art and did two passes with the machine. 1/4" and 3/4" in from the edge. made a nice subtle framed sort of look. facing is such a good technique when you don't want the finished edge to draw too much attention. your finished wall quilt is lovely.
I’ve considered the facing method, but have not searched for the directions. Your video came up in my suggestions and I appreciate your instruction. This promises to be the salvation of a project I goofed on as a beginner. Not thinking about adding borders, I cut my backing and batting to the exact size of my top. I did not like the idea of binding it as such because of the pattern on the top. I believe applying a facing will preserve that pattern satisfactorily. Thank you.
I just finished a small quilt and realized I don’t have space on the border to add binding without impinging on the border design. This is perfect! Thank you
This is an amazing way to finish a quilt. I am always struggling with other bindings. Thank you very much. This is gonna be my way to finish my quilts.
That's great for me, never been able to do the other kind of binding. That would also look really nice with the back side on the front for place mats. Thank you.
I'll probably have to watch this at least three more times. But this is how I'm going to finish a quilt for my daughter for Christmas. Thank you so much! I simply have zero ability for sewing by hand and needed a way to finish it on the machine.
I like the clean look on the front. I made a patchwork blanket with chenille bedspreads from the 50/60s that i've been collecting and this will be a perfect finish to not detract from the pretty patterns and colours. Thank you for this technique. I now know what it's called.
Am I the only one who would make it the other way around with contrasting fabric? So that the triangles shows on the front, thereby framing the piece? The straight pieces can be folded and ironed beforehand, and then just stitched down (machine or invisible hand stitch). Love that cat!
Omg this is brilliant as I hate traditional binding and think it would even look amazing having the triangles on the front Can't wait to try it on my next project
Love this, I'm going to reverse the facing so it goes on the front. Like a mock border. Must go play with this now, thanks.
Great idea!
I like that variation too.
My thoughts too.😊
Have you tried it? That was my first thought too!
How does this work ?
This is really a neat concept, especially for anything you want to hang. Personally, I have never see this technique even though I have been sewing for over sixty years. This is a hack I will definitely use a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like it!
A really interesting technique! Never come across this idea, and I love the idea of the ready made hanging system due to the corners. Many thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I've been waiting for someone to show something different that's easy. I hate the old binding methods, too much trouble. Thank you so much for this idea, I'm trying it right away on a baby blanket.
Great!
Have never seen that technique done, but I think it's brilliant, especially for a wall hanging. Thanks for sharing another great hack!
You are so welcome!

Simple vertical sewing looks really nice👍.
Yes! Thank you! And anyone can sew straight lines and it always looks great 👍🏻

Thanks so much, I haven’t seen this method before! A new trick for an old quilter!
You are so welcome!

Yes! I have seen that done. Definitely a more economical and less toxic adhesive.
God bless you for sharing this method. I cannot master those mitered corners to save my life!!
Glad to help!
That should work!
I'd just wondered about the same! I'm a beginner so pleased to see someone who has more experience than me giving it a go.
Wow this is a great idea that I have never seen. Thank you for sharing!!!
Enjoyed this it was very interesting. I’ve never seen the corners and stuff done like that. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I LOVE this technique!!!! I can't wait to try it on the baby quilt I'm making!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Love how simple and neat the facing edges came out! Definitely saved this one! Thanks!
I'm going to try your suggestion to use grey thread!
Awesome! Thank you!
That’s a clever way to finish the project. I love the idea of hanging it with the corners
I shall definitely share this technique with my quilting group, Freedom For Girls, Bridgeman Downs Baptist Church, Brisbane, Australia. Many thanks.
Awesome! Thank you!

You are so welcome!
Oh my gosh, this is the best method of binding small projects that I have seen yet.
Wow, thank you!
I like the facing idea. I'm sending your video to my sister because she makes more modern type quilts, I think this would look good with her quilts.
Thanks for passing it on!
RUclips put your video on my feed and I'm glad it did. I've never seen this before, but it looks great for this project. Your tutorial was easy to follow, plus, no binding join needed! Thank you for sharing this option!
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely genius! No need to fuss with mitered corners or have to join the ends! I love it.
Glad you like it!
Thank you for the suggestion of using painters tape for straight line quilting! I needed that idea and this brain does not figure things out anymore, getting old, lol.which is so aggravating because that used to be one of my best parts. Also the technique of facing the darling cat wall hanging.
You’re welcome! Glad you liked my ideas ❤️
What a great way to finish wall hangings for sure! I will be trying this!
Please do!
Hi Sheri. I love your adorable wall hanging. Thank you for showing how to do 'facing' . It's perfect for the wall hangings... if I find it easier I might do it on a quilt. Beautiful cat... thanks fir the chat and hugs

Wow, I could not even see the binding in the front. Love it.

Very well done. I appreciate your demonstration and comments on not having to hand stich for a wall hanging.
Thank you! 😊
I love that technique! On a small project like that, you could attach the back binding with double sided iron on tape.
Great tip!
Looks to simple to come out this beautiful, but I saw it happen! Thank you!
It’s Ah-mazing!
Awesome option ,have some wall quilts in progress so will finish this way.TFS
Wonderful!
I can’t wait to show this to my sister-in-law who just started quilting, and actually sewing too.
This is brilliant, I'm making table runners and this will be a lovely way to finish them off. Thank you ❤.
Wonderful!
I just finished a small quilt and realized I don’t have space on the border to add binding without impinging on the border design.
This is perfect!
Thank you

This is an amazing way to finish a quilt. I am always struggling with other bindings. Thank you very much. This is gonna be my way to finish my quilts.

Absolutely love this technique. I can’t wait to try. It looks so much easier than binding. Great video.
It really is!
This something new! I really enjoyed you sharing this quilting technique! Thank you!
That's great for me, never been able to do the other kind of binding. That would also look really nice with the back side on the front for place mats. Thank you.
That's a great idea!
Wow, I love this technique! So glad this popped up today, getting ready for craft shows and wall hangings will be easier with this method, THANK YOU
Wonderful!
I had not seen this technique before. I love the look for a wall hanging. Thanks for sharing.
Loved your technique. I have dreaded those corners long enough. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the facing tutorial. I really know understand facing. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I'll probably have to watch this at least three more times. But this is how I'm going to finish a quilt for my daughter for Christmas. Thank you so much! I simply have zero ability for sewing by hand and needed a way to finish it on the machine.
I hope it works well for your project 🤔
Wow! Thank you. I also love your little wall hanging. I love my cats also. ❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
I like the clean look on the front. I made a patchwork blanket with chenille bedspreads from the 50/60s that i've been collecting and this will be a perfect finish to not detract from the pretty patterns and colours. Thank you for this technique. I now know what it's called.
Great demonstration, seen it done before but you made it look much better with the corner triangles ! Will be trying it out soon!
Awesome! Thank you!
Am I the only one who would make it the other way around with contrasting fabric? So that the triangles shows on the front, thereby framing the piece? The straight pieces can be folded and ironed beforehand, and then just stitched down (machine or invisible hand stitch). Love that cat!
You are not alone! You could certainly do that.
Thankyou. I am going to do mine that way as well. None of those botched bindings on the front. YAY
Omg this is brilliant as I hate traditional binding and think it would even look amazing having the triangles on the front
Can't wait to try it on my next project
You could do that!
