People are surprised she didnt bash her mother .... Why would she??? Its her MOTHER. You can have an opinion about your parents but dont trash them to strangers because then strangers feel like they can do the same. She honored her mother and father, which is highly respectable. ✌✌✌👍👍👍

That didn't stop Christina Crawford and B.D. (Bette Davis daughter). The difference is Liza had success in the industry so she didn't feel the same level of jealousy towards her mother and Joan and Bette's children did. They had to cash in on their mother's fame for revenge.

My heart does actually go out to Christina Crawford because I am actually open to the idea that much of her recollections of her mother are true. Yes she may have written what she wrote out of revenge but also healing and wanting to open the door for other victims of similar circumstances to come forward. It sounds like Liza had a different experience with her mother - difficult at times but not in the same way and nowhere near as bad as the media depicted, and Judy was much warmer and more vulnerable. I've always admired the way Liza talked about her mother.

@@user-kf8wb2cq4f The truth is in Lorna's book, which reviewers were careful not to quote. Even waking up and making breakfast was beyond Judy, sleeping off her daily hangover. She took no part in her children's education, and even deprived the two younger ones of a decent night's sleep without craziness going on at all hours. Booze and drugs were in great supply, but they routinely ran out of food. Judy even once, in a major buzz, threw a knife at Joey's head and grazed it. However, all three offspring know if they said anything negative, Judy's many fans as well as the press would turn against them.

Everyone kept asking the same question, “was she a good mother?” Always expecting a a negative answer.. She loved her kids but she had worldwide fame that she had to deal with until the day she died. She dealt with people who robbed, cheated, abused and maligned her and fed drugs as a teen and was addicted to those drugs. She needed to cope. She was human and people forget that. I can’t imagine having the weight of the world on her shoulders and constantly working and supporting everyone except herself. RIP Judy.

So right, always the same question. it seemed as if Judy never really had anyone who had her best interest since childhood. Her mother, who pushed her and agreed with all the studio wanted for Judy to do. It did not matter that she was so tired she could not even sleep. The studio big shot recommended to her mother to take Judy to the studio doctor and that he would take care of her tiredness. Judy just needed support and rest that's all. Instead, she got whatever form of speed they had those days even saying they were diet pills. she was 14 when the doctor gave her the first prescription for uppers. The pills worked and she had tons of energy but was not sleeping. She was too wired up from the speed. They sent her back to the doctor and this time he gave her a prescription of seconyl, a sleeping pill. A pill to stay up and one to stay down. When the sleeping pills were not working she started to drink. A lot of people killed Judy Garland. A lot of greedy people.

You really hit the nail on the head. I know people try to transform Judy Garland into some kind of super human goddess. She was an ordinary woman with an extraordinary gift. She was so horribly abused by the industry and it makes me so sad. They took and took from her. I'm sure there were ugly sides to her personality, like all of us have. She loved her children desperately. I truly believe she loved her children and wanted to give her babies what she was deprived of as a little girl. I've watched her interviews and she was a very witty and intelligent woman. Liza is her own genius. I believe what Liza is saying in these interviews. There was substance abuse that probably wouldn't have happened had the studios not mangled her emotionally and physically. God bless all her kids. All three of them are pretty cool people.

I appreciate that Liza said some very very nice things about her mom. Which I truly believed. I don't believe that Judy ever was worried about Liza showing her up, Liza's not that good. She isn't in her moms class. A couple of those tapes they showed of her singing with Judy, Liza hit some very bad clinkers, Liza is talented, but, not as good as her brilliant mom. Lorna's a better singer than Liza, but neither no longer have any kind kind of a voice left. And Liza showed some arrogance about herself during the interview. Especially considering that it's not like putting together a compilation of modern interviews, where everything gets uploaded to RUclips and you just grab clips from each video and string them together. These clips are from the 1950s onwards. Hunting them down will have taken a long time. Interviews like these ones might only have existed as a reel of tape for decades, which could easily get forgotten about, lost or damaged.
Whoever put this video together has created a historical artifact just by hunting down these clips and putting this compilation together. Many of them may well have been lost to time otherwise.

And as Liza repeatedly said , it's not so much that it's annoying to be asked about her mother , it's just annoying that usually the person doing the asking is heavily framing the questions based off of the perceived tragedy Judy went through ... and keep pressing and pressing for a sad anecdote as if they get off on someone else's pain. The fact that I have only watched 35 minutes of this so far and am already tired makes me realize how composed and gracious Liza was. Always smiling , looking to the bright side - at least publicly. 1:13:50...I want to apologize to Liza, for being one of those many people, that loved her mom *So Much* , that we hated their derogatory media too, and we desperately grieved at the loss of her mom...to the point, that we desperately desired to hear her sing her mom's songs, with the voice that she inherited from her mom. I totally understand, and respect the letting those songs lay to rest, with her beloved mom. She and Judy had a pact of love. I SO Admire that. You're a darling Liza. ♡♡♡ May God bless you. You are the ideal, perfect daughter. Never doubt that. ♡

9:24 I understood that sentiment. Her momma was their home & where ever they were as long as they were together they were always home. That’s something a lot of people never understand because they associate material things for stability. It’s never that. I hate it so much that Judy was so scrutinized by the media. That shadow of scrutiny was also over casted on her children as if they owed the public some type of answer as to why they’re so damn happy. As if they shouldn’t be. The media is evil.

Liza Minnelli is quoted as saying, 'I was never much of a singer, but I did know how to present a song. Honey, I've been doing it for twenty years'. This was not false modesty, I think. However, I disagree, she is one hell of a singer and yes, her presentation is faultless. She truly is a great star. God Bless my darling.

I caught earlier in the interview, or maybe on the first half of this post, where Liza says she didn't have her mom's gift of a voice. She said she had to learn how to present the song because she didn't have her mom's talent. Which to me is total nonsense! Liza has a fantastic gift just like her Moms. They're two extremely gifted singers. They both could sing their stinking faces off.

I saw a documentary which stated at a very young age Judy’s mom gave her daughters ( The Gum sister’s- later Garland Sisters ) meds to wake them up and meds to help them sleep. So they could perform and make money. Later the studios gave Judy diet pills. It is sad. I think it was very wrong to hook a child on these meds at a young age, no wonder she struggled.

I think LIza's greatest moment was in "Caberet," with Joel Gray. I think of all the great women who played the part on Broadway, Liza WAS Sally Bowles. She was simply born to play the role. I really enjoyed this video, thanks for posting.

    • @leecooper4213
      @leecooper4213 6 лет назад +9

tiffsaver: I really enjoyed Liza as Sally Bowles role in "Caberet", too. I recently saw an interview where she described how she came up w/ Sally's look.
I had always assumed that the director or make-up artist(s) for the show would have created the look, but Liza said she had a very firm idea (in her mind's eye) about how Sally should look, so she actually cut her own hair in that very distinctive style (having a stylist clean up the edges, once she got it how she wanted it). THEN she passed a make-up supply store while walking down the street - and saw in their window the various sets of long eye-lashes.....She bought several pairs & also purchased a set of individual lashes. For Sally's look, she applied a few pairs of eyelashes, then topped the look off with several extra long individual lashes ON TOP of those already applied pairs of lashes. She commented that she had a friend of hers (who was a drag artist & familiar w/ applying false eyelashes) help her accomplish the actual applying, since she was new to false eyelashes & felt she needed some help with creating the desired look.
Liza went on to say that the Director almost passed out when he first saw her (after her transformation). She said, "I was real lucky that he liked it, otherwise I don't know what we would have done!"
I found this info astounding, as I just always assumed there was some sort of artist behind the scenes that created this VERY distinctive look. Liza was & IS a very creative artist - even down to the minute details....Guess that's her Minnelli blood shining through! ;-)

And it proves that, even if you are unstable, fighting with health and adiction and your housing is difficult and money is scars, you can raise healthy happy children! Now isen't that a great storrie to give you hope and faith if you are in a difficult situation?
