  • From her gradual ascent to stardom in the 1930s to her death from a drug overdose at age 47 in 1969, former vaudeville baby Frances Ethel Gumm, aka Judy Garland, endured a string of personal and career ups and downs that continues to color her reputation as an icon whose tragedies outweighed her triumphs. This TV biopic, based on the first half of daughter Lorna Luft's book Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir, attempts to humanize Garland's legend by presenting the singer/actress' story from an insider's point of view. Tammy Blanchard plays the young Garland, an MGM contract player with an overbearing mom (played by Marsha Mason) who helped push her daughter to stardom -- and, along with studio boss Louis B. Mayer (Al Waxman), into a lifelong addiction to booze and barbiturates. From her early performances alongside Mickey Rooney to her breakthrough role in The Wizard of Oz, Life With Judy Garland paints the performer as a sweet kid who just wanted to please her mother, especially after the death of her gentle, beloved father (Aidan Devine). Australian actress Judy Davis takes over as the grown-up Garland as the film traces her five marriages, exile from MGM, countless film and stage comebacks, and crippling addictions. The film's final section concentrates on the home life of Luft, her brother Joey, and their half sister Liza Minnelli, as the kids and their broke mom moved from one hotel to another and Luft nursed Garland through depressions and binges.

That's the size of most 12 yr olds today. They wanted her to keep a prepubescent look to play younger parts. At 16 she was still playing a 12 yr old on screen. When you look at footage of Judy Garland from those days, you can see that although the actress has been made-up to look like her, she has none of Judy's gravitas.
It's awful that they cast a young actress who is thin, tall, beautiful and a perfect "Hollywood" ingenue. Wasn't that a big point of the tragedy of Judy's early years? That she felt short, dumpy and fat compared to the starlets of the Hollywood machine?
It's insulting, and sad. In many ways, all you have to do is watch part 1 of this to understand that things in Hollywood... never change. Yeah, #metoo was a thing. But maybe it's over now, because people really, in the end, don't care. Hey, she looks like Judy! Yay!

I think Judy Davis, who plays Garland as an adult, (shown here towards the end of the video), has her voice and mannerisms and how she expressed herself in later life mastered perfectly. That’s when she should’ve come in, to portray the actress in the last years of her life. Bringing her in to portray the “Meet me in St Louis” days, when she’s supposed to be 22, was too early.

I'd sooner have Margaret Hamilton as a mother than that Witch, Ethel! Between her and Meyer, I'd take my chances with the flying monkeys.
Interesting, though, there was a lot of Canadian actors in this.... Al Waxman, Sonja Smits, the actress who played Mrs. Coverman also played Katherine with a *K* in the Anne of Green Gables sequel.

Cali Den if you read the memoir (of the same name) written by Lorna Luft (Judy Garland’s second daughter) that this miniseries is based on. Lorna Luft says she doesn’t think Judy Garland’s Dad was gay, even though from almost all other accounts I’ve heard they said he was. She also said that Vincent Minnelli (Judy Garland’s 2nd husband and Liza Minnelli’s father) wasn’t gay either. I think that’s why they glossed over the part about their sexuality. The only time in this Miniseries that even remotely implies that Judy Garland’s father was gay was in the first scene where you can see him clearly holding a guy’s hand. So to answer your question that’s why. Hope this was helpful.

@Me, myself & I I'm assuming theyre referring to referencing other bios of Judy that refers to her father as bisexual and/or gay. I've read both. I read that was one reason the family relocated to Cali because Judy's father was caught having an affair with another man. But you are correct by saying the show isnt about him. I think they capture what's most important and that's her relationship with her dad and how close they were.

@@angiearbogast5424 You are correct Angie. What difference did it make whether her dad was bisexual or not, in fact I'm not in the least bit surprised, being married to that evil bitch Ethel was enough to turn the poor man to the other side. She was an evil, vicious, manipulative fame hungry harpy who only wanted what was best for herself and not her children, especially Judy. Filling her daughter full of pills contributed to the way she suffered her whole life. It was out and out child abuse, make no mistake about it. Judy and her dad loved each other dearly, her mother loved ONLY one person, herself, jealous old bag she was. She should have been jailed along with the rest of them who exploited Judy. They should have been ashamed of themselves, may they rot in Hell.

Whitney had problems later in her career yet in the 80s and 90s she was a force and a powerhouse of a vocalist and performer. Judy was a great singer with a nice voice they are from different eras so their no point in comparison in who is a better singer.
