Though you can clearly see the affects that all the substance abuse had on her, she was still such a charming, sweet lady. It's so sad that she went through so much pain in her life.
My dad worked with Judy at the London Palladium. Because of her reputation no-one else would work with her. But we were short of cash. My dad really did NOT want to do it. But he worked with her for a long time and said she was one of the most professional people he ever worked with. On the last night she came and shook everyone’s hand and thanked them. He was shocked by the way she looked, but he’d worked with the best and always said she was in his top ten. This wasn’t that long before she died.
Johny was such a gentleman... today's "talk-show" guests would destroy this wonderful but tragic lady.... there will never be another Johny and there will never be another Judy....
Judy was far stronger than she appeared. She would never have considered herself weak. If she were as weak as everyone believes she would have died at 27 and not 47. Having a chemical dependency does not mean that someone is lacking in strength. She could be a very tough woman when she had to be.
Johnny was so good...he knew exactly what he was doing. At first she is so nervous, then before you know it they are genuinely laughing together. SO good.
I saw her on Dick Cavett and he treated her really well and I was nervous. Cuz he's kind of Dickie sometimes. Lovely to see some of these people have such Grace and patience and kindness
Chandrabali Sattir ... Thank you, and your points are just as interesting, re: Lucy's aggressive brand of comedy. Insightful take, indeed. Lucy wasn't slapstick, by any means (at least in the beginning), but she was the "mischievous, scheming woman," which was a niche all her own, really, and why we haven't seen another Lucy, ever. (And, sorry, Debra Messing, you ain't even on the same PLANET as Lucy.) Lucy's character was predicated upon a likable American woman in an unconventional situation (Cuban marriage!) plotting and scheming to get around her husband's rules in *conventional* American "can-do" ways. To me, that was the whole basis for her comedy, and she aced it. Vivian was the "stand in" for the TV audience ... along for the ride, but also the butt of the jokes from the unconventional couple at the center of it all. Lucy never really made squat in entertainment until she and Desi sold that unique formula at a crucial juncture. Judy, however, had already been a staggering box office, recording, and radio superstar because of her 1. Incomparable voice and 2. Her onscreen charisma and appeal. Like Lucy, Judy may not have been a Venus de Milo, but both women were pretty girls and their superstardom and charisma made them more glamorous than some of the sexpots. I just think that Judy's troubles were more magnified because post-War America did not want to even PONDER "beloved Judy" as anything less than happy, much less strung-out on pills and slashing her own throat. To her credit, after films sucked the life out of her, Judy remade herself into a female Sinatra --and became even bigger. Judy always had the movie-star glamor about her. The public loved her and happily accepted her as the female Sinatra, but only to a point. When she started dying in front of their eyes on TV talk shows, mainstream America looked away. It was too much. Lucy became ragged and sounded like a barroom pool-hustler, but whatever dignity she lost in private, America didn't see it before their eyes. She managed life better than Judy.
I care very little what anyone else says ... even in the final years of her life, Miss Garland was (as Carson so graciously confesses to admit) ... a truly unique performer ... the likes of which (and the level of sheer native TALENT of which) this generation, to be sure, has never even begun to experience. I am very, very thankful indeed that the 'Jean Hansen's Experience' has taken to care to up-load this show in its entirety. Once again, thank you for a professional service of real value.
Carson had a lot of class; Judy was clearly out of sorts here, looks and sounds like maybe one too many tranquilizers; but he was aware of it and handled her with respect and dignity, and audiences fell in love with her, she a rare talent for touching the audiences heart.
Look at how thin she is, she's sick here and he knows it but is a gentleman and treats her with compassion. Watch some others interviews, they were unnecessarily cruel to her.
Yeah. And that's really hard to find in some show host these days , especially David Letterman(If he were still working) ' he would've let her _Have_ it , she wouldn't have stood a chance with him.
I really like her outfit here. Also, didn't know she was so funny and brilliantly entertaining until I watched this. Wonderful. The commercials were added bonus delights-!👏👍
Yes, very. Even as a professional, I've read she had real stage fright, so that may explain her needing to warm up and relax even in an interview. But she's really very engaging.
I dont know what is but I just cant stop watching her. It's somethig magnetic. When shes perforning its just mesmerizing. I dont feel bad about her life. They'll never be another her. Like Michael Jackson, Elvis, Prince etc some people are just born with extra doses of talent.
Agreed. Johnny does wonderfully to keep things light and optimistic. Judy had only a year left of her life here. Watching her is kind of painful because she appears so much older than she was. 😢
One more year and she would be gone. This was hard to watch. And she was only 45! She looks 60. What a shame because she had so much going for her. Extreme talent.
That answer, "Retire" (when Johnny asked if there was anything she'd never been able to do, but had always wanted to do) is based in very deep, painful truth. A LOT of her problems were due to the way she was viciously overworked by studio moguls during her heyday, when they compelled her to put in endless long hours, often when she was suffering terribly from various ailments (chemically induced and otherwise), all of which contributed to and exacerbated her drug problems, stress, and depression. She was really exploited, and she never quite got over it.
David Whiteis Her problems stemmed from lack of diciplen. She wanted to be super rich, because she wouldn't have had to do shows like this to help promote herself. Even if she was super rich, she would have ended up abusing drugs alcohol. Some people have little self control, despite their great talents.
brkitdwn that's unfair. Showbiz was all she knew and she worked to feed her children. Judy was never really rich and she never learned how to manage money.
brkitdwn So you also had a mother who made you take uppers to perform when you were exhausted and downers to go to sleep after. I think that was when she was around 4 years old. I am doubtful that you would have done as well. Learn something before you speak or write. 🙁
brkitdwn You don't know anything about her and what contributed to her shortcomings! Read a good biography of Judy, addiction is rarely just a matter "little self control"
What a lovely, consummate professional and fragile lady. They don’t make them like Judy Garland any more. Beautiful to see her casual and on TV. Rest peacefully, one of a kind legend.
Damn, Liza Minnelli looks and sound just like her! This my first time ever seeing Judy Garland as an older woman, I'm so used of seeing her in young days in The Wizard of Oz and Meet me in St. Louis. RIP Judy and Johnny
I saw this 50 yrs ago when it first came on in Deember of 1968 I was 12 yrs old at the time have always loved Judys humor singing and acting shes awesome cool great on Johnny Carson I remmber it well
Just wonderful. So hard to believe she was gone one year later. She looked great! Years agoI saw Liza a couple of times at the Garden State Art Center. Just wonderful.
Always loved Judy Garland! This video kind of makes me sad.... because she didn't seem to be happy and kind of nervous. Such a wonderful woman and one of the very best entertainers of all time! RIP Miss Garland
These commercials bring back some serious childhood memories. Watching Miss Garland is absolutely heartbreaking. Her eyes look so sad, she looks twice her age and she can barely form a sentence. What a sad and tortured life she lead. Basically everyone she came in contact with did nothing but use her. It seems her only joy in life was her children. What a tortured soul.😢
My God, she is like a tiny frail bird here. I don't know how she did it. Performing since age 3, all of those long hours on set then working on stage to audiances of thousands and having 3 kids in the middle of a huge career.
L E G E N D !!!!!!!!!! Judy a llo ways spoke at times in hesitations , she is thinking of her next remarks..... I don't have to defend or explain her ...JUST WATCH THIS SHOW AND ENJOY HER !!! Love U JUDY. Peace
To see Judy Garland this way makes me sad but the reality the body can only take so much. You're right Len Welch - she looked age when 45 years old she should be feeling great - Hard to believe the little time she had left. I hate all those studios that started her on pills to keep her making films and downers to keep her down. It is surprised she survived these many years. I blame those horrible people that had doctors to give her uppers and downers.
Judy had about 1 year left on this earth from this original televised date. She sadly seems timid here. Obviously a tortured soul but still greatly loved by her fans still.
THE greatest influence on Judy was Kay Thompson who perfected her phrasing, her act and worked out ALL her wonderful movements and gestures. Kay Thompson was Liza's godmother. You will notice that 'concert Judy' is not the same performer as the simple and sublime Judy at MGM . The difference is a girl and a woman.
i was 2 years & 10 months old way back then..I am so glad that the station promos & commercial advertising is included in this wonderful piece of television history.!
Thank you for uploading this show in its entirety! Compare Judy here at this age to Madonna at the same age. It is apparent the toll that the studio execs took on this woman and contrasts with how Madonna is -how Judy should have been, healthy, fit and wealthy - in control of her own life. Two extremely strong women, from two different eras. Also, I miss Johnny Carson so much.
I miss her dearly. When I sit down too today's television I am disgusted with programming. Judy and let's never forget her supporting cast have always been the best when it comes to her movies/singing. My DVR is already programmed to tape "Meet Me In St Louis" tomorrow night. Once again Judy you are missed so much!
Thanks for sharing this. Any footage of The Tonight Show from New York is a real treasure. I'd also enjoy seeing the Bennet Cerf footage but it likely doesn't exist
Carson's insider comedian joke, "The Aristocrats," when Judy is talking about the kerosene-water vomiter act. A great moment in a great, bittersweet interview.
Judy is so special. It's quite shocking to see her so frail here and as some of the comments say- like a much older lady yet only in her 40s. I wonder if Marilyn Monroe would've been the same had she got to this age. Lovely lady & talent.
Judy was a show stopper 1922 - 1969 Period !! From the mid to late 30's through to the 1940's Judy was slimmed down & glammed up and sure enough she looked terrific. However what the studios (or her mother) couldn't do anything about was her ageing or the effects of the life threatning medication induced upon her. Did they know about the effect? Possibly not! Would they have cared? I doubt it! So long as they didn't have to take the blame and Judy was making them loads of money - No worries! Move forward to 1968 and this appearance - I can see clearly that she isn't quite as sharp as one would expect of her and her hesitations do sound a little bit more pronounced than usual. But there is something about her that no matter what she says or how she says it just draws you in... I think that considering the time of this broadcast that Judy looked really good and certainly didn't look 70. I'd like to see any one of her detractors in the looks department send me a photo of themselves after having been through so much and expect our appluse of approval - I think not! Lastly and most importantly - This little lady only lived on this earth for a very short time but in many respects she is ageless. Her many movies and recordings remain the best of the best. Why? Because warts and all Judy was the best!!!
Bravo to those that left the commercials in! They really give you insight to what was the norm back in 68. Too Cool!
Johny was such a gentleman... today's "talk-show" guests would destroy this wonderful but tragic lady.... there will never be another Johny and there will never be another Judy....
She wasn't even old. yet she looked/acted like she was in her 70's. poor soul.
Judy was far stronger than she appeared. She would never have considered herself weak. If she were as weak as everyone believes she would have died at 27 and not 47. Having a chemical dependency does not mean that someone is lacking in strength. She could be a very tough woman when she had to be.
She had to keep working but should have been retired; her husband blew her fortune gambling. Tragic story. She was a phenomenal star.
Johnny handled her very well here....Both legends.
Oh she is so frail and tiny. I just want to hug her. I remember the day she died. They just wore her out.
Johnny was so good...he knew exactly what he was doing. At first she is so nervous, then before you know it they are genuinely laughing together. SO good.
I love Judy and this was a nice interview. She did appear very nervous and out of sorts.
Judy, always the professional!
Yes, Johnny was wonderful. His passing marked the end of an era. There's a great tribute to him by The Kennedy Center honors here on RUclips.
I saw her on Dick Cavett and he treated her really well and I was nervous. Cuz he's kind of Dickie sometimes. Lovely to see some of these people have such Grace and patience and kindness
Judy was still funny even at near the end of her life !!! xxx

Chandrabali Sattir yes, one year later she was gone :(
I want the US to be like this again. Minus the racial discrimination of course. I just find this era wholesome and classy.
One of the greatest performers of all time. So engaging.
She really gave her all⭐the more i learn,the more I appreciate her🍸🌹👑💄💋

A year after this appearance she'd be dead
Look at how thin she is, she's sick here and he knows it but is a gentleman and treats her with compassion. Watch some others interviews, they were unnecessarily cruel to her.
Damn, skippy! She was JUDY GARLAND. Capital 'M' MOVIE STAR/LEGEND
Out of sorts? Honestly sweetheart it's like you have no idea who Judy Garland was.
Yeah. And that's really hard to find in some show host these days , especially David Letterman(If he were still working) ' he would've let her _Have_ it , she wouldn't have stood a chance with him.
One of the greatest entertainers that ever lived!
Thanks for the clarity and totality! This is what respect looks like...
+Burl Lampert Thank you! It was done out of love and glad it shows! Please check out my other videos.. ruclips.net/video/T-5xqtXcMjY/видео.html
She was a great entertainer and person. The studios did a job on her, starting when she was a kid. RIP.
Judy and Mickey always glowed and smiled whenever they would talk about one another. That’s true friendship.
I really like her outfit here. Also, didn't know she was so funny and brilliantly entertaining until I watched this. Wonderful. The commercials were added bonus delights-!👏👍
Judy was one of the greatest entertainers that ever walked this earth!!!!.....love u Judy there will never be anyone like you💕💕
Well the tobacco industry pushed their drug onto the unsuspecting public at that time. Everybody smoked and it was accepted/expected.
Thank you for including those commercials from that time period. SO FUN to watch!!
It's no secret how drugged up she is but she looks beautiful. ❤
I think she's hilarious and charming here!
My Parents Saw her at Carnegie Hall in NYC in the 60s
Agreed. Johnny does wonderfully to keep things light and optimistic. Judy had only a year left of her life here. Watching her is kind of painful because she appears so much older than she was. 😢
And with all the work she did she should be filthy rich!
A true legend look into those big beautiful dark eyes she's beautiful beautiful lady with a voice of an Angel a true legend
One more year and she would be gone. This was hard to watch. And she was only 45! She looks 60. What a shame because she had so much going for her. Extreme talent.
Tracey Baumgarner Yes. Sad. Speed. And that’s why she’s so thin and her movements are jerky.
She Is So Beautiful. I Love Her Eyebrows
What a woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I LOVE the vintage commercials!!!

She owed 1/2 million dollars at this time and had 3 kids, she was penniless most of her life.
Fantastic footage! I love Judy Garland!
That's Liza's whole gig. If she didn't steal her mother's act, some other drag queen word have.
Isn't it weird watching them smoke . She's lovely.
She looks so good here in this interview, it is hard to believe within a year she would be dead.
What a " GIFT " to the world !!! Sad ending !!!
I saw this 50 yrs ago when it first came on in Deember of 1968 I was 12 yrs old at the time have always loved Judys humor singing and acting shes awesome cool great on Johnny Carson I remmber it well
Artistry like no ever! For both Judy and Johnny!!!
I will always love Judy. She passed when I was only 6. I wish I could have met her.
Iam her big fan but she passed four years before I born
Just wonderful. So hard to believe she was gone one year later. She looked great! Years agoI saw Liza a couple of times at the Garden State Art Center. Just wonderful.
Always loved Judy Garland! This video kind of makes me sad.... because she didn't seem to be happy and kind of nervous. Such a wonderful woman and one of the very best entertainers of all time! RIP Miss Garland
Love the Crest commercial with Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard!
With commercials! She won everyone's heart across the spectrum. There's that one thing never ever even mentioned. Yet I mentioned it.
Judy looks great here.
Judy is a true legend!
Damn tough broad in a man's world! ❤
Wow all those old commercials!! flashback!! I was 13 yrs old!!
Thank you so much for uploading this!!
These commercials bring back some serious childhood memories.

lakevubud wolf they were drugging her since she wss 16 for her nervousness
Ah Judy......one of a kind....
One minute of commercials instead of seven
She will always be the world’s greatest entertainer! Bless her heart.
L E G E N D !!!!!!!!!! Judy a llo ways spoke at times in hesitations , she is thinking of her next remarks..... I don't have to defend or explain her ...JUST WATCH THIS SHOW AND ENJOY HER !!! Love U JUDY. Peace
She was at the of her game and could anything.
To see Judy Garland this way makes me sad but the reality the body can only take so much. Oh my gosh!....I remember those old Palmolive commercials...lol.....[Madge] "You're soaking in it."...hahaha
Thank you very much for this!
Judy looks underweight and tiny ...whoever said she was chubby was crazy! she was a little woman with HUGE talent!
someone whos said she was fat you need a help now
Her weight gain was related to a hepatic illness that she got better from😦
She was heavy for a brief period
I love and miss Johnny Carson and Bless Judy's heart. Sad to see what happened to her.
Madge the Palmolive lady, "You're soaking in it!"
kloop1948 brahahaha!,,, that commercial is CLASSIC!!
In the end the pills got her. I for one am glad to have had her in some of my favorite musicals. She was easy to fall in love with.
Judy had about 1 year left on this earth from this original televised date. She sadly seems timid here. Obviously a tortured soul but still greatly loved by her fans still.
Johnny's show was still being filmed in New York at this point. The Garden State Arts Center was, and is, in HOLMDEL, NJ, and still at Exit 117.
THANK U FOR POSTING! She's definitely medicated (God bless her). The commercials and everything is AWESOME! A+++
Shake n Bake .. It's Better than Fryin'
Thank you for these amazing videos.
Cig cases were in one's hand back then while in modern times, instead, it is your cell phone in your hand. Does it signal TWO addictions? 🤔
BTW thanx for the glorious original commercials, Jean!
YW and I'm glad you like it. I have the other Carson show and the Douglas appearance on my channel also with commercials.
Thanks for leaving in the ads.
Great Talent...Like so many....Struggling with addiction ...Like so many.....
God, Liza styled herself SO much on her mother!
Love NBC peacock. Classy. When tv had class. And Judy. Wow.
she looks like Liza here.
Catherine Mathers my thoughts exactly. That was the first thing I said out loud "she looks just like Liza"
Ray Jackson Well, they are Mother and Daughter.
She sounds exactly like Liza
Catherine Mathers You mean Liza looks and sounds like Judy. Judy came first🤗
You mean Liza looked like her here
amazing, smoking on TV....its been a long time
i was 2 years & 10 months old way back then..I am so glad that the station promos & commercial advertising is included in this wonderful piece of television history.!

Madge!! Do I remember those polmolive commercials....I love the old commercials
I miss her dearly. When I sit down too today's television I am disgusted with programming. Judy and let's never forget her supporting cast have always been the best when it comes to her movies/singing. My DVR is already programmed to tape "Meet Me In St Louis" tomorrow night. Johnny was such a handsome man.
Thanks for posting this
She looks MAH-VELOUS here. Can surely see how much Liza resembles her Mom.
JP Monroe ...nah Liza is the image of her father
correct look at the eyes
Thanks for sharing this. Any footage of The Tonight Show from New York is a real treasure. I'd also enjoy seeing the Bennet Cerf footage but it likely doesn't exist
Rare stuff. Most of the 50;s shows are gone, Thanks.
Love the commercials!!!! The day has come....the new Dash!!!!
Carson's insider comedian joke, "The Aristocrats," when Judy is talking about the kerosene-water vomiter act. A great moment in a great, bittersweet interview.
Thank You Jean Hansen
My God! She must have weighed 72 lbs. So sad.
Johnny was clearly smitten by Judy, he had good taste in women.
Almost literally one year later -- she was dead. Sobering. Don't take life for granted.
Judy and Johnny AND Madge the manicurist !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, Lassie's mom June Lockhart ......Great wonderful fab' post here.
Judy is so special. It's quite shocking to see her so frail here and as some of the comments say- like a much older lady yet only in her 40s. I wonder if Marilyn Monroe would've been the same had she got to this age. Lovely lady & talent.
She breaks my heart . I look back at her early days and she beamed and to see her dull and dazed like this is horrible
Judy was a show stopper 1922 - 1969 Period !!
