Don't get me wrong, i'm kinda happy for all of you guys the Gamepass exist, due it opens up to more players. But i'm still more classic in that regard and prefer to own said games...
Horizon has developed into an obsession of mine. I set it separate from games I love as works of art as single player experiences. Games like Bloodborne, BOTW, Hollow Knight, etc. I love those games, I could talk about them for hours. But as for what takes up the majority of my gaming time? There's no contest, it's Horizon. Playground really have turned Horizon into a gaming playground for me. I don't even like online gaming, but Horizon implements it in such a carefree, no-friction kind of way that I play Horizon 4 daily, to this day, three years after it first came out. Just finding someone, joining their convoy, and drifting across the map in a tune of my own creation(Racing The Tide my Xbox handle btw :) ). It's approachable while being incredibly deep. Insanely deep. You could(and I regularly do) lose yourself entirely in single aspects of it; like drifting, without ever even getting seriously into grip racing, livery designing, rally racing, event creation, etc. etc. I believe it is pretty much the most perfectly balanced simcade handling model of all-time(I'm not going to get into an argument about how you define simcade, so please, don't bother), in that it is obviously circumscribed when compared with something like BeamNG or Assetto, or even Forza Motorsport, yet its physics model is still extraordinarily deep and emergent, and its 'competitors' like NFS Heat and The Crew are not in the same galaxy. It is the handling and physics model that really underpins everything about this game. The best way to get across how great this series is is to describe myself in 2016, before I ever bought Horizon 3. I had no interest in cars, and the only car games I played were Burnout. If you had to use the brakes at any point I considered that too much like hard work. Then I played Horizon 3...and quite quickly I became obsessed with it. I fell in love with cars. I started playing other racing games. Then all of them. I bought a Fanatec wheel, pedals, shifter, handbrake, and bought a gaming PC specifically so I could get into sim-racing and Assetto modding. I now watch car youtube channels, something I would have thought was the most boring thing on earth back before Horizon. None of that would have happened if it wasn't for Horizon. When they said they wanted to 'turn gamers into car lovers and car lovers into gamers' I can say with certainty that they did so with me.
Ahhh yes, because developing “realistic” car games with ZERO player character animation because, well, you’re always stuck in a car - will absolutely translate to a scifi, medieval setting like Fable that includes no cars to speak of and is the exact opposite skillset that Playground has developed over all these years… can’t wait!!!
He's right about the sound! I'm really impressed with how I can hear cars pulling up behind me, along with the usage of the height channels that are often ignored in games with Atmos.
I've been flying around in drone mode on Series X and the detail in every inch of the ground and environment is so high it's actually obscene. I can't remember the last time I was so blown away by a game's technical grandeur.
Holy smokes the level of detail on the ground surfaces look incredible and the textures on the rocks and vegetation are almost photo realistic and I even saw a Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless) dog in one of the scenes running around awesome looking game can’t wait to play it.
It’s kind of crazy how some environment shots in this video looked like IRL B-roll at first glance. I used to think FH4 looked great but this game is just on another level
2021 has been a surprising year for me -- my top three games are Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, and Guardians of the Galaxy -- three games I had no intention of playing or even enjoying. This, however, is the one game I've been waiting for since it was announced and I'm so happy it looks like it won't disappoint.

Excellent work as always, John. I'm just stunned, honestly. Would love for you guys to analyze the ray tracing update they just released. Ray tracing is available during actual gameplay now, not just in Forzavista. They also added DLSS, DLAA, and FSR 2.2 support!

I've been trying to get a PS5 all year and it just hasn't worked out. I recently found a Series X available and jumped on it. Completely worth it with the value that Game Pass provides. I still want a PS5 for the exclusives but man, it feels good to play Xbox franchises like Forza and Halo again.

Amazing work, John Linneman. Will someone at DF give this guy a raise?! I might be biased about the subject matter but the production quality of this video and the thorough detail are at the top echelon of what's available on RUclips. Thanks for the content, DF.
I have nothing but respect for Playground Games for making such efforts to push the limits and optimize their games. Also to not rush to release in an incomplete state, especially in todays world where it pretty much became the norm to release a game each year even at the cost of quality, innovation, and buggines. It probably has to do with the publisher Xbox as well but idk.
@@Massproduce201 I really didn't enjoy Returnal, one of the most frustrating games I ever played. It would be a travesty if Returnal wins GOTY. Edit: Just checked there, Returnal only has an 85 on metacritic, no chance it's winning GOTY. Ratchet & Clank is the highest scoring PS5 game with an 88, Forza Horizon 5 currently has a 91. It will be between them two games, both are enjoyable experiences. I personally prefer FH5, let's wait, see who wins GOTY, would've no complaints about either game. They both showed what the next-gen consoles are capable of achieving.
Had to set my console to New Zealand to play this early and it didn’t disappoint! It is absolutely stunning and the handling tweaks really make a difference. The level of detail is quite honestly mind boggling. The Playground Games team should so proud of their achievement! The only one weird graphical “issue” I saw so far was on the character customisation screen where there were a lot of temporal artifacts around the hair. Really a minor grumble, but still there.
Playground Games is a beast. This is the one game that makes me want a Series X. There's nothing similar on ps5. Amazing game, i enjoyed a lot this series on 360 e One.
FH5 looks like it's going to be the first certified classic of the generation. PS5 has had some good releases but nothing jaw dropping like this. I highly recommend getting an Xbox! I have both PS5 and XSX, and the Xbox still gets a ton of use from me. With it's vast back compat library, superior back compat capabilities for cross-plat games (AutoHDR, resolution and FPS boost), and the incredible deal that is Game Pass, it's a fantastic system that is a huge step up from the XB1.

2 different games imo. GT is the most realistic driving sims while racing on world renowned circuits. FH is more arcade like with beautiful open worlds. Personally, for myself, it comes down to casual/wild driving or pro level racing.

Love the Forza Horizon series. It's one of the main games I usually buy an Xbox for. Though in this video, I did spot that really weird bug at 25:13. @@acevedoaandres Uh... no they didn't. If memory serves they were harsh on the AA implementation in Driveclub only. Driveclub still looks better than this game and it features SSR on car bodies in game faking RT even though it's a last gen game with no PS4 Pro enhancements. Additionally Driveclub's weather effects are also an improvement over what is shown here in FH5 and things like POM were also used liberally on tracks and building surfaces. Volumetrics were everywhere with SSS and appropriate translucency for plants... again things that DF says are new to FH (which isn't strictly true but it certainly doesn't look right in FH4), but were already a thing modeled correctly in Driveclub. Driveclub's weather systems are very dynamic and while you wouldn't see a dust storm in Chile literally all other forms of weather are accounted for including rain, snow, aurora and lightning which was only just featured for the first time in the base game with FH5, but again was in Driveclub (although added post launch it is shown everywhere). Clouds are also volumtric fully dynamic casting appropriate shade, GI and even being factored into dynamic cubemap reflections so glass doesn't show a void for sky reflections. That said other Volumetrics in Driveclub were more accomplished than previous Forza Motorsport and Horizon titles. It looks like Playground Games is just catching up with regards to accurate light transport with respect to volumetric effects on smoke clouds. Wind also seems to hardly be a consideration for plumes of smoke in previous Forza Motorsport and Horizon titles. Seriously if I break things down point by point FH5 is still catching up to Driveclub and so too is Microsoft Flight Simulator (which still looks better than this so long as you fly an appropriate distance away from the ground; enough to showcase massive levels of detail but far enough to hide the seams). Driveclub was so far ahead of its time it is still the bar to beat in my personal opinion. However my opinions aside when you look at Driveclub objectively in terms of the shear number of visual effects being run in realtime at 30FPS in 1080p in a game... the closest comparison is Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) for PC specifically and even so the PC struggles to keep things looking as good as Driveclub particularly clouds and reflections in water bodies. It's actually quite odd that a PS4 exclusive from 2014 is still neck and neck with the latest PC and Xbox games. Meanwhile other PS4 and PS5 games are pushing settings similar to Driveclub today like Ghost of Tsushima and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Bottom line this game while much better looking than previous Forza games - by quite a bit - it's still playing catch up to the best looking games already out there including some open world titles like Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. Anyway that's all from me... go away now.
Seeing the graphical fidelity, attention to detail and general care shown by Playground Games here makes me both intrigued and excited to see what they do with their Fable reboot. Extremely excited to see one of my favourite franchises make a comeback, especially with Playground behind the wheel.

Great analysis, probably the best I've seen on this game. Forza has always been the benchmark of graphics on next gen consoles and you can really see it with this one. Initially, I was disappointed that there was no 120fps mode, but considering how vast and detailed the map is, I'm very happy to settle with near enough 4K @ 60fps.
this is an area consoles serious lack compared to PC. having the choice of performance and quality mode is certainly a step in the right direction compared to the old days of "you get what youre given"... but would it really hurt them to include some graphics settings like pc.. even more limited ones with resolution being the main. id much rather run the game at 1440p 90-120fps than 4k60.
@@iris657 yeah, a high spec PC will always beat console but both Series X and PS5 are powerful enough to run games smoothly at a high frame rate. For a game as detailed as this, I can see why they made it 4K as 60fps is good enough for most people and they don't want to compromise on the detailed grahics. It's one of the standout features of the game which they spent a long time making. Plus, a game this size running at a steady 120fps would probably need to be 1080p which is too low in my opinion.
@@cun7us Not how game design works, but ok. Also totally not true. The recommended spec is a GTX 1070. My computer is by coincidence fitted with a GTX 1070. The game doesn't lock to 60FPS at 1080p with all settings maxed out and 4x MSAA. (Yes, I own the game and have already played it). It's great that RT in Forzavista works though and actually manages to stay over 40FPS most of the time. I can basically lock to 30FPS at 1080p and it's early days. My GPU driver was too old to run the game when I first launched it but after updating nothing really changed and performance didn't improve by any noticeable degree. Perhaps another driver update from Nvidia will remedy those performance issues though I doubt I'll claim nearly 90% better performance from a driver update to reach 1080p60. This game is a lot heavier than I anticipated but I can still push past the Xbox One X highest settings and run the game at 1080p30.

Uh... no they didn't.
Can't wait to play it tomorrow!

It's in the settings somewhere, can't remember where. Your console will restart when you do it right.

Most people are still gaming in 1080p especially on PC.
@@VariantAEC maybe, but a flagship game like Forza Horizon 5 was designed to be 1440p or higher.

Not how game design works, but ok.
