- Опубликовано: 21 авг 2024
- Join Alex Battaglia for a detailed look at the 60fps upgrade for Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, stacked up against Xbox One X and (where appropriate) the PC original. Developer Panic Button has handed in a decent upgrade with lots of improvements - but there are issues, including a couple of visual cutbacks that are concerning.

That hang up at 6:50 is a rare occurrence based on its 7 servers are 1 server system. You switched from one region to another but the new region I presume had a full lobby of higher ping players and the game pooped itself a little. More server side than game/console side. The servers for Horizon 4 are garbage after all
Yes most of the lags are normally due to online or OS activities for the game and not really HW related
Yeah. Great racing game. Awful online services. I have yet to finish any of the online activities, because I inevitably lose connection to the server before completing.
Yeah well don't presume. It even hangs offline.
I somehow doubt they were doing their analysis while doing an online game. You can easily play this game entirely offline.
I notice a freeze like that on xbox series S when I search for a horizon life session and when it connects you get a temporary freeze.

You can drive from the black forest straight up into the Swiss alps and those beautiful roads where Hammon crashed the Rimac, and then descend into the valley with the air strip where they drag race hypercars. Lots of amazing driving roads and the autobahn running through half the map.
...And the piece de resistance: the public access nurburgring: the nurburgring where we can just drive onto it in online freeplay and race a van against a GT3 RS and thread through all the other players on the track. I know that most of the upgrades other than increased FPS are probably unnoticeable when I'm driving over 100 mph, but I still find all of this technical analysis fascinating!
Actually how faster you drive how much more noticeable it is because due to you driving in fast speeds the frames only render at 24fps so when you say 500feet every 2 seconds your game will be chopping those frames as 500:24~20:2=10 feet per frame while 60fps will get you 500:60~8:2=4 feet per frame. Would you want 10 feet per frame or rather 4 feet per frame?
And the difference increases exponentially too.
I just realized you said other then fps kill me now.

@@darkzer0455 I never said it does? I only gave a reference number to compare greater fps.
Is a great game, but this downgrade on night shadows and SSAO is sad.
I don't think you are "reading" the timestamps correctly. The millisecond counts seem to be counting to 60 but you are reading them as a decimal point. At 4:13 you say 13:40 as "13.4" seconds but it's more like 13.67.
That's an interesting thing to point out. I've never actually seen milliseconds to be counted up to 60. I wonder if it's just a visual presentation thing on the video overlay here or DF's internal tools actually do count like that.
Technically, a millisecond is a 1000 of a second so it's always counted to 1000.
@@uzeeinc I think it must be a problem with the tool. A "mm:ss:msms" format just doesn't make sense. The ":" as a seperator is unusual, you would need 4 digits instead of 2 for ms and of course it wouldn't count to 60. It should be "mm:ss.##" with ## being the first two decimals for the seconds.
I noticed the same thing. To the point from @UzEEInc , in the video does show the last two digits counting from 0x to 5x and back to 0x, and it certainly shouldn't be read like a decimal number using the word 'point'.
Thank you for this. I knew something wasn’t right visually. I just couldn’t pick it out. The shadows, I definitely saw. I didn’t catch the ambient occlusion missing, nor the characters animating at half frame rate. So hopefully they fix these. There is no way the new machine can’t run it at 60 frames per second with these things present... or maybe it’s something with the engine. But if the PC can do it at ultra with a 2080, the series X should be able to do it the same. It just might need more optimization. Let’s hope it was just some sort of glitch or something they missed in translation. Cause it’s funny, because something seemed off to me and I couldn’t place it. Definitely the ambient occlusion would make a huge difference along with the shadows. There is also some sort of lighting glitch and I can’t place what that is. I notice it when I rotate the camera, especially through trees. It seems like there are light flashes. I don’t know what that is. Maybe you guys have a better idea.

Thanks DF, finally a relevant comparison about FH4 :). I had the chance to receive my Series X on 10th nov (France), but when I launched Forza Horizon 4 (which I used to plays dozens of hrs on One X quality mode), something appeared weird to me eyes, as if it was more "flat" visually... Here's the clear explanation . This new gen is deceptive, seems to already show its limitations on old gen games upgrades: that kind of graphic concession to allow 60 fps is too bad. And, in the case of Gears 5 for example, the visual were improved as it was already running at 60 on One X...
ONE X still kickin ass. I Think it will be worse in trully next gen games like it was after Xbox One premiere. Crossgen games look very good, had stable FPS (like Assassins Creed Black flag), but when AC Unity came out, XONE and PS4 cant handle new engine. Sry for my eng.
I don't notice that at all.
It has nothing do to with hardware limitations here. It's just a port and as a port, it relies on devs skills to exploit the potential of the hardware. Since Playground didn't work on those ports directly, i guess it's normal to see a difference. Just remember that it's just a port, a simple optimisation. They didn't redo the whole game for the Series S/X. There is no point in judging the console based on those ports. For example, Forza Horizon 3 is running at 30fps on Series X/S, not because the console can't handle it, but because the game received no optimisation. Previous gen games optimised for next-gen console will always depend of devs skills. The Series X is capable of better than that, same for the Series S.
“The quadrupling of pixels is very obvious.”
Me on my phone: “I’ll just take your word for that, friend.”
Even an RX5700XT, which is inferior to the XSX gpu level, is able to run FH4 at perfectly solid 4K60fps on ultra settings. My theory here is that the game is still running in backwards compatibility mode, so they cant still make use of RDNA2 IPC improvements, i think that it's literally emulating GCN behaviour. The game shouldn't be announced as an X|S optimized in this state.
My theory here is they couldn’t optimize the game for something the Series S can’t do and it’s holding back the Series X as a result
@@thenoobperspective7588That's not right, the game have sligh fps drops on race starting scenes, which means that it's also hitting performance limitations on XSX, this game is still running in BC mode, just with a new settings tweak.
@@jotawayhijo That’s probably due to the high polygon close ups of the cars running at Native 4K. It certainly isn’t well optimized, but it’s not running in “BC mode”, this is a native port.

For almost every single race the dynamic shadows are turned off...except I noticed in the stunt events it's fully active. So if I can get Gears 6 4K 60fps and HDR on the One X when it comes out I'm happy to stick with that and save £450 $499. Its not worth it to buy a new console for one game or maybe 2 with Ray Tracing. Il get the PS5 for third party games and exclusives and maybe PSVR 2 if it happens. I dont see the need in anybody with a One X to upgrade if you buy a PS5 unless your a hard-core Xbox gamer. By the way I'm not knocking the Xbox Series X it looks a beast but in perspective I couldn't justify the cost against my One X

For me, this is further proof of the senseless push for native 4k resolution. I prefer more details over resolution.
Yes definitely. Everybody is going crazy that it’s 4k @ 60fps... what they don’t realize is it’s on medium-high settings with some even turned off!
Give me 1080p ultra maxed out settings 100fps anyday.
The load times kill this game. SSD is a game changer.
Can you do a No Mans Sky analysis on Series X? I installed the update, and have to say it still suffers from really bad pop in.
That game will always suffer from pop in no matter how good your rig is. That’s just the way it’s procedural generation works
Its because of the slow SSD from the SX. On PS5 pop ups dont exist.

One could only imagine how Driveclub looks in 4k 60fps.
Holy crap dude that game was so ahead of it’s time. I fired it up recently and even at 1080p it dunks on the majority of racing games today. A 4K60fps re-release would look incredible

@@nightdriver7216 Forza didn’t even match its level of fidelity until Horizon 3 years later, so I think not.
@@0uttaS1TE What usually works in this case is complaining. However, the Forza Horizon fan is usually satisfied with too little, because "lulz free cars" and "virtually unplayable" meme when people report bugs/inaccuracies in cars. It's frustrating to be a fan of the game and notice that if you look closely it does fail to live up to its huge potential.
Love DF as a news source for all games. But sometimes ya'll reach for straws on these things. No body is going to notice that 400% zoom of a distance quality or the frame dropping from 60 to 58 for a mere second.
Bro this is literally there one job to point those things out
Hmm, I'm sure they'll patch it, sounds like they started with the old oneX 60fps version as a base.
Yup. Basically all the issues that the series x version has can be blamed on playground games moreso that the Xbox itself. Would be interesting to see 120 fps 1080p, but I'm not sure if it's possible.
@@joechinchar9833 If your TV can take it, this system'll do it.
This is crazy! Did we just witness the first ever Forza framerate drop? Forza has ALWAYS had locked framerates on console, whether it's 30 in Horizon or 60 in Motorsport (or Horizon 4 on One X).
I know that Panic Button made the Series X|S port and not Playground/Turn 10, but it still really baffles me.
Hopefully they can improve a few of these issues. Seems they've just used the 60FPS from the One X and then ported that over while upping some settings.
I would really like to see Japan, Africa and Argentina in next Horizon games.
the team had limited ablity to made place... they still made more for 4.. so this going to be awhile.. at least free upgrade for it so i was happy..
People need to understand how important VRR is going to be this generation.

That Series S is waiting for me to be picked up at a post office but having an Xbox One X I figured it would overall still perform a tad better with 60fps and then obviously having 1440p.
That's not the case it performs the same on 1080p.. :S yeah I'm gonna send that shit back.
That ForzaTech engine is so cool. Wish more engines were that optimized.

It's time for DF to add "most common pc settings" and not just "ultra 5000$ pc settings", especially now when the new consoles are out, makes way more sense.
nah
This game runs on max settings easily on a modest PC, it's very light on resources which makes the compromises for the Series X version even more puzzling. Unless the Series X just isn't as powerful as Microsoft told us.
This game runs 4K 80fps fully maxed out on my 2080S ... but I thought Series X was equivalent to 2080ti??
@@spenny2cents Not at all. The XSX is barely touching a 2080 Super in terms of TFlops
@@FullNietzsche I think it's cross gen support that's been holding both current generation systems back. I think games are developed for the base Xbox One and scaled up for the other consoles. I think Digital Foundry did a video where they stated that in a backwards compatible game that the Series S fps were locked to 30 fps and had no ray tracing even thought it is capable of higher fps and ray tracing is because it was running the base Xbox one version. I think Series S needs to become the new base system since it's architecture, hardware and features matches the Series X which will make upscaling easy, Microsoft could've went cheaper with the Series S CPU, but needed it for scalability, so it wouldn't have to make visual and performance sacrifices such as they're doing with developing cross gen with the base Xbox One as their base developers can only make minor visual and performance scaling up for the new consoles with a set/limited amount of time given before the launch of their game.
In two to three years when Microsoft releases their Series Pro and the new base console becomes the Series S after they end cross gen support, then games developers won't be hold back by any limitations and be developing games utilizing all the Series consoles features that the base Xbox One lacks.
Man this game looks great. I played in Performance mode on the One X. 4K and the higher render distance just add so much to the experience.
I am in awe, feels amazing to play.
Dev Teams must shit themselves when they see their game on your channel being reviewed by Sherlock Holmes.
Great video and the game looks amazing (as always!). Maybe picking on the driver updating at 30fps vs the game at 60fps and highlighting that as an issue was maybe nitpicking just a little too far! The amount of time you spend in a car where the driver is even visible is pretty minimal (was for me at least!), and I'd challenge anyone not looking for flaws to spot that while concentrating on a race! I guess DF's job is to look for these 'flaws' though I guess!
Great video. FH4 looks stunning no matter what yhe review indicates though. I really like what IGN is doing now with their analysis of video games as DF does. However, what IGN is doing is one step forward to DF, is that they actually include an interview from the developer regarding the decision taken towards what was to be included or not on upgrading a game. That way, we as gamers have a better understanding on whether a patch ia expected to improve on the issues or not.
This man is an absolute WIZARD when it comes to analysing gameplay. Wow! Blows my mind what he notices. Legend!
Good work. I'm sure Playground will be able to push this engine to include some of the previously present eye candy.
Lol nice pop-in with the grass at @0:41 😂 what a joke
They had one job. Get One X quality mode running at 60fps. If they couldn't make that happen in first party, something is VERY wrong with Series X.

In winter, what i found out is, the snow looks a bit too shiny in some cases on my Series S compared to the One X version. Best to see on the stones from the Windmill.
Frame rate drops occasionally as low as 57 FPS on Series S? We would have thought we'd died and gone to heaven to have problems like that last-gen with this level of fidelity! Amazing for such an inexpensive console. Truly exceeding my expectations. Not for most hardcore gamers, but truly a good option for a second console in another room when the main console is in use.
Starting off the generation with caveats has me concerned. To be fair, the cross gen period is always shaky.
Yea. We won't see unreal engine 5 demo kind of graphics any time soon. Same goes for a DLSS-like upsampling.
Yeah, I was expecting more. But I do think a lot of developers are on the ropes as no other generational transition has taken place during a time on global pandemic. I do feel like these first batch of patches do not really tell the whole story. Time will tell.
It's not just that there are caveats, but that the Series S appears to be worse off than the X1X. 1080p with worse textures, and this is an in-house developed last gen title simply getting prettied up for the new gen. That's fairly concerning.
you must be new to console releases
@@instantstupor Ray Tracing really hurt the Series S version of the game. It should be an optional mode for that console. In really curious to see which console performs better running this game so I can buy it for my PS5 or Series X.
