Not my favourite commentator, that was David Coleman and Barry Davies but still great value. I will always remember his commentary on the Brazil v Italy match 1982. So sad when people that you grew up with on the TV in the 70's die.

I don't know if I'd ever have fallen in love with football as I did without Motty, he was a hero of mine. He could make a 0-0 draw sound like the best game you'd ever watched just through his passion and enthusiasm for the game. A truly lovely bloke too who always had time for everyone. Even a few days on I'm still incredibly devastated. RIP Motty, you'll never be forgotten

A 50-year career which saw him commentate on some of the most iconic games in English football. what a sad day this is. 77 years of age is no age at all these days. he has left a huge legacy. He will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace Motty. We will remember your contribution to football.

John Motson was and always forever will be known as Mr Match of the Day. His knowledge of football was literally second to none. What a wonderful human being, what an incredible broadcaster and sports commentator, the very best that this country has produced and his great voice, warmth, funny humour, you name it - he will be so sorely missed. England and the world lost an all-time international treasure.
