Barry Davies, simply the best commentator of all time. The way he delivers the lines, with such timing and panache will never be equalled. Gorgeous voice and just a fantastic guy! My personal favourite was when the great man says “and there’s an element of delirium on the terraces” when Gary Lineker scores his third goal against Poland in our final group game of Mexico ‘86 and subsequently bags a hat trick. You cannot teach such dialogue and skill! Barry Davies, you are a legend. The word legend gets tossed around far too easily these days. However, in in this case I feel it is fully justified 😀
And he’s got Burruchaga to his left and Valdano to his left and he does…he won’t need any of them….oh, you have to say that’s magnificent.
He produced far more memorable commentary lines than Mottie ever did
Brilliant mate. Chills
Davies was wonderful. Motson was excellent too, maybe not as descriptive but his voice perfectly fitted the big occasion. Today's commentators simply do not compare. Oh to return to the glory days of football commentary.
Barry was very good,Beats todays ijuts
He did like his significant pauses, did Barry. I think his finest moments (which I've only just discovered) were the last 10 minutes of the 77 european cup final, and the celebrations afterwards.
Like Clive Tyldesley in '99, I think he had a monologue ready to match the occasion. The Kop fans were jubilent, the atmosphere was the finest I've ever seen in football, and Barry Davies captured it in words for us as the crowd sang their songs - the pleasure in his voice:
"The scoreboard puts up one simple word: you find it on the Mersey... and the name... is Liverpool"
“Just look at his face, look at his face!”
Can’t imagine today’s charisma free commentators coming up with classic stuff like this
That one annoyed me at the time and still does when current commentators reference it, as one did just this week during one of the world cup games. It's not Barry's fault - it's Franny Lee; I could never stand the sight of the fat, cheating, diving little **** and so did not want to look at his face at all
So many of the ones today clearly prep lines before going on air which is why they sound so clunky. When he came out with commentary like that it clearly wasnt pre-prepared, he was just reacting to what was in front of him. The best.
"You have to say that's magnificent!"
He is quite simply the greatest of them all. His commentary was the soundtrack to my childhood.
Barry Davies was the master no one before or since has come anywhere near him .Whenever you heard he was the commentator you knew you were getting the best.
I miss this guy so much. I know we all have to get old, I wish I could meet him and tell him thank you for voicing some great footballing moments from my childhood
The GOAT of football commentary. End of discussion.
Barry Davies the best will never be replaced
Barry Davies for me was the best .. I still remember England vs Poland Mexico 86 and the sound of Jimmy hill celebrating in the background .. great great great times
His commentary of Maradona’s goal was legendary
He was so confident in his words. It’s hard to describe. He did a great job commentating and he has left his mark in history.
IMHO the best commentary for that goal was by Bryon Butler.
Barry Davies remains by far the greatest commentator in sports broadcasting. So many sports he commentated on - tennis, gymnastics, the Boat Race, hockey (field hockey and PROPER hockey) - but it's the football commentaries that remain his forte. They're so good, he'd even make a park kickabout sound like an epic encounter.
My own personal favourite - 1:08 "Hunt... OHHHH WHAT A GOAL!!!! (few seconds pause) Well, they don't come much better than that!! Straight out of the book, and on the first page too!!" (but then I happen to be a Coventry City fan)
The best along with the late great Brian Moore.
Nowadays they even need co-commentators!!These guys did it effortlessly on their own
The GOAT of commentary. A master of all he worked on. Just love to have these little sessions just listening to his work.
The Bergkamp commentary is the stuff of legend
It was class still gives me goosebumps, as a spurs fan Bergkamp was World class I can admit
Loved the way you could hear his emotions when a particularly great goal went in ie. Bergkamp scoring that goal in the last minute to knock out the argies.......quality 😊
interesting ...very interesting ..just look at his face just look at his face...describes the goal to perfection ..my personal favourite
You`re the best Barry, which is some achievement when measured against your peers , John Motson, David Coleman and Brian Moore.........your Commentary when Leeds demolished Southampton 7 - 0 in 1972 still gives me goosebumps !
Should have had his Leeds vs Southampton 1972 7-0 commentry on this.
"Poor Southampton just don't know what day it is".
Last piece of commentary makes me well- up. Absolute class.
@Peter Anderson Yes he was the voice of my youth when I listened to the ,matches on the radio (couldn't get sky due to a massive Oak tree) Great passion, excitement and real honesty in his work
There's Barry Davies. Then there's the rest. The only one missing from this wonderful list is the build-up to the Egypt penalty v Holland in 1990. Spine-tingling.
Barry Davies has versatile voice, great commentator! I still play Actua Soccer 3.
Much better than today's commentry teams
Brilliant commentator. One of the voices of my youth as a kid in the 90's
Davies over motson any day!! I was waiting for the Platini pass to battiston in 82..which nearly killed him.
I don't think there is a "one is better than the other." Both Motty and Davies were superb at their jobs and both have given me great footballing moments of nostalgia that I will remember for the rest of my life.. Certainly commentators nowadays are nowhere near their levels. Nowhere near.
Such wonderful memories . And what a commentator .
oh i sayyyyyy! that.is.schoolboys own stuff!! best commentary ever
3:36 makes me cry
“And there’s an element of delirium on the terraces” is one of the best commentating lines I’ll ever hear
Terrific commentator.
BD over anyone. Ever. The greateat of all time.
Brilliant.
The best ever and only ever.
Barry was the best, he was professional and dispassionate during general play but when something unusual or big happened he knew it and didn't reign himself in, he let his natural passion show which is why we remember so many of these moments, because it was natural. None of the terrible forced 'banter' we get from TV commentators now.
Couldn't agree more. Today's "commentary teams" are a big turn off.
Arguably his best commentary was the 1988 Olympic Mens Hockey final.
The one and only time when impartiality took a back seat.
Brilliant commentator ! Best ever
Some of his derisory comments were funny as well. The Pat Nevin penalty miss for Chelsea in particular always makes me laugh.
Simply the best
Arguably the best ever line from Barry Davies was in the GB V Germany hockey match in 88 Olympics.'Where were the Germans? Frankly, who cares?'
Barry was sensational... I've also seen (though the channel who uploaded it is now no more) a clip of Tony Yeboah scoring THAT goal against Wimbledon, and that's up there with one of his best calls ever imo... even though footage of that goal is typically accompanied by the equally iconic Martin Tyler.
Best sports commentator ever!
the best of all time. and not just football. He made every sport he covered watchable
Great goal celebration by Van Morrison at 0:30 😂
Lee… interesting… VERY INTERESTING!!!
The voice of football.
Oh I say: it's Bazza in his pomp! Magnificent stuff.
What a fantastic commentator barry Davies was he is still alive today
Rebecca Lowe sent me here.
Lol same, I’m just seeing the commentators she said cause I grew up in Martin Tyler so imo he’s the best but I want to see the opinion
i knew i couldn’t be the only one haha
Along with Hugh Johns the best football commentators ever…
I used to feel sorry for him when he made these huge efforts to pronounce foreign players' names correctly, but, although he didn't realise it, still got some of them hopelessly wrong. To be honest, I was never too keen on his commentating - having said that, he was miles better than today's interchangeable, characterless non-entities.
Hubbiharetta, Schoals & Sol-shire-are spring to mind. Gotta love the guy!!
@@ejkalegal3145 The two where I really felt sorry for him were the French keeper Joel Bats, which he pronounced 'Bah' - but the French pronounce it just the same as the English word 'bats' and Lilian Laslandes, which he pronounced 'La-lond' - the French pronounce it 'Lass-lond'. Still, at least he tried. I still remember Ron Atkinson talking about someone called 'Rotch-a-toe'.
@@adolforodolfo6929 lol brilliant, what a legend
Barry Davies was such an eloquent commentator, he always seem to be in Motson's shadow.
Just look at his face look at his face 😂
Brilliant scilacchi ii best bar none him and moty
Is Gazza going to have a crack he is you know, great commentator and a Tottenham fan even better
Where's the classic 'OOOOHH NNNOOOOO' whenn Southgate misses the pen? Or his OTT reaction when Pearce score his pen against Spain in Euro 96?? And who can forget the classic during a Denmark WCmatc the camera close up on a gorgeoys blonde dane and Barr says...."I dont think she was too impressed, but he may be impressed with her!"
I remember a Derby game where BD said ...... " needs 2 extra inches " , as a player missed a header. Fell about laughing at the time.
"The situation is on for a quick one."
That was Brian Moore wasn't it? (The Koeman free kick)
Best TV football commentator in my opinion. On a par with radio's Peter Jones and Bryon Butler.
Brilliant commentator but his best work was on the World Stare Out Championships...look it up
Up Ray Houghton 😊😊😊😊😊
Let's not forget his reaction to Gareth Southgate's penalty miss at Euro 96
"OHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!"
Is Gascoigne going to have a crack????
He is you know!!!
Football Clichés podcast represent
I respect Motty but I always preferred Barry Davies the only one that beats both is Brian Moore who is the ultimate for dramatic description.
2:36 - 2:42 that Italia90 Brazil/Argentina game gave me one of my favourite moments with Barry. During the live coverage from Italia television, one of the Brazilian female supporters had got her breasts out at halftime, the Italian TV directors had decided to keep the camera focused on her. Poor old Barry is left, politely coughing and apologises to the UK/BBC audiences about the fact they were getting prolonged exposure to a half naked female & nothing could be done to change what was being shown.
I can remember my Dad wasnt complaining about it, no doubts there were dozens more fellas enjoying the "halftime entertainment" too 😅
"Look at his pixels. Just look at his pixels!"
The best
And Leeds will go mad!
Errm whats with the repetition? And you left out Malcolm McDonald's screamer for the magpies v Bolton he convulsed over that one.
Does anybody know what the music is playing in the background please
grand commentator for the grand European / World football games....Motson was better suited to the FA cup games
Brilliant commenrator. So much better than Motson
04:03
THRIKER!
For sheer Britishness, nothing beats Gazza's "Oh, I say!!!" Irreplaceable.
I have to say, he didn't exactly cover himself on glory at the London 2012 Opening Ceremony.
Brian Moore was the best IMO
Wow I wouldn’t say he is the best. John Motson was the best in my opinion. I will never forget when he said Maradona Maradona sent off. Then u saw poor Maradona shaking his head and walking off. This was against Brazil in a WC match in 82. Maradona had the last laugh though in 1990. lol
You missed the hockey game against the Germans!
...and another!
Negrite was twice....bad editing....and Bergkamp
Never liked him. He was consistently unable to keep his personal feelings and prejudices out of his commentaries. And he seemed to have an intense dislike of anything German. "Schumacher moved" was his cry during the penalty shoot-out between Germany and France at the 1982 World Cup. At at the 1988 Olympic Hockey final between GB and Germany he infamously said after GB's third goal "Where were the Germans, well frankly who cares".
Peter Jones was the best soccer commentator. Barry Davies a fair second.
Neither was in the same league as Richie Benaud though.
He was a good but John Motson was the best. ⚽️🏟🧐🎙
