Ian Boswell thank you. But still I would like to see how you do rotation especially the priority of spells. To learn from your gameplay is difficult cos I see that the rotation depends on the situation. Thank you anyway :-)
Well uh... get as many people around you then use rise. The other minions you should just already have out. I use Axe 123 when attacking at distance, 4,5 on closing the gap then swap and just go 1 2 3 4 5 in order, pop reaper if the target ain't dyin' and hit 'em with 2 3 4 5 and auto 1 until I get to about 50% then swap back to axe if they are running away, or keep waililng with GS up front.
I realize it's common to hype a build after you've had some success with it, and after you've spent all the time in an echo chamber, but I swear Mr. Boswell's picture can be found next to the word 'exaggerate' in the dictionary. In GW2, it's actually a bit of a challenge to make an unusable build.... maybe a melee build for ranged opponents? Fire vs fire resistant.... that's about it.
So i built this up last night, just exotic armor with dungeon tokens, same for weapons. I went for a stroll through Tangled Depths with a friend and he had nothing to do but watch in awe as this build just cuts through what ever stands in her way. Thankyou for posting. After 5 years, i can finally play a Necromancer that is actually fun.
If anyone is wondering if this build is still viable in December of 2018... IT TOTALLY IS! Ever since making one of these I'm soloing HoT and PoF and everything else I can find, and I feel like I'm really helping my team out in events and other areas. While I was levelling Reaper up I rolled Axe/Dagger and Dagger/Warhorn and it performed great even against Champs (solo!) in open world. Gone, as well, is the constant worry that I'll stumble into a big group passing through an area and get ganked - no matter where I've ended up and no matter how big the enemy groups I wake up in open world, I can almost always fight my way free with this 'unkillable' build - the few times I've died were more my fault for not knowing the Shroud skills very well more than anything. Best part: he's absolutely right when he says "this lets you be the Minion Master you (I) always wanted to be" - thanks so much for this, Ian!!!!
Where do u spend your hero point while leveling to maximize output..i know u eventually learn it all..but be nice to know where to start other than maxing minions
I like this video especially the end part where you almost die twice, while technically sure you didn't die so unkillable kinda fits you must admit that if the boss was focused on you ...you would have died.
If you feel like you're missing crit change, you should consider decimate defences in the reaper line. Both your focus and GS have access to lots of vulnerability.
yeah with decimate defenses you can just take valkarie gear over zerkers after 30% crit chance as you'd have 100% crit chance with fury and 25 stacks of vuln, making things even tankier.
Reaper doesn't have a good way of applying fury unfortunately. If you were just doing open world PVP content, Rune of the Pack is a fantastic rune set that you could use that gives fury.
Also, I think Decimate Defences is bugged. It is not increasing my critical chance, either visually by looking the numbers when attacking, or actually looking at my skas during a fight.
I prefer death nova to unholy sanctuary. It enables two extra minions, which in turn increases your toughness, life siphon, attack and enemy distraction. As long as you watch your health, this is better than the mild heal from US. Also, if you feel you're missing out on crit, go with soul reaping instead of reaper. You get the extra crit, increase in health, more shroud up time (with a bigger life force pool and life force gain increase), and you gain last grasp for extra survivability. It you want to be immortal, trust me, this is better
add this to the fact that the lws 3 mastery for downstate that provides ls on your basic down skill and the necros already inherent ls. it means even if you get down, your very likely able to pick yourself up.
Damn. I haven’t played gw2 in a while and just getting back into it. Didn’t know the game could look this beautiful (the gear, the mounts, the environment, everything). Once I get my engineer to 80, going to create a necro to give this a try (the engineer has been tough to play so looking forward to something easier for the next round)
Ian, thanks for putting this video together. I've actually been away from GW2 for a while and I was thinking about getting back into it and your video got me excited to pick it back up again. Now I just gotta figure out what I've missed after all this time!
This build is awesome. I don't have the reaper(?) specialization yet, but even without it I noticed a huge difference in survivability. After a few hours I was thinking "time to solo a champion". I died, but came tantalizingly close. I'd never done that well before. 👍
Nice video. I haven't read all the comments on it, someone may have suggested it already. But I tried it with a scepter (main hand) and dagger and so far in the little testing I did was even better. I haven't tried it on larger groups as of yet, but I think it will hold up well. As it gives the bleeding right away and also adds torment. :)
Want to know what's more ridiculous than using this build yourself? Having two people together using it. You heal each other as well as the insane heal you get on your own. I got my girlfriend using it as well. We just helicopter down into the largest groups of mobs we can find, both hit rise, and both soulspin. Fastest way to collect karma ever.
Hell Ian, I've used your idea as basis for a version with Marauder / Berserker mix armor, adding a few percent crits. Hitting 60+% CRIT, 23+K HEALTH, and weapon damage from min 2.6k - max 3.1k. Any stat point is better, combined with your awesome idea on traits. It'll make a killer build! Thx for the idea.
I've just returned to the game after a long hiatus, I love farming and used to play a wellmaster before HoT was even released. Back then minion builds were a lot squishier and I was really skeptical with the axe/focus thing. Since I've been back I've been concentrating on metabattles Chilling GS which is an awesome burst damage but something didn't feel quite right, especially in the solo area. But HOLY CRAP is this build a tank with some decent damage. You get in a zerg with this and you just steamroll anything and everything. Switch blood magic to 1-3-3 and you can safely res anyone in Champion battles. It's awesome. Cheers for this!
Thank you for posting this build. My condi reaper was crippled by the nerf bat to the knees, my power wellomancer reaper build didn't work well, and scourge feels uncomfortable to me. I like reaper, but was about to abandon it. This build has shown me that reaper was not destroyed by scourge.
After playing around with it, I've found you can use the same build if you want to switch to Scourge and it works nearly as well. Swap Reaper for Scourge 2 2 2. I'm using condi armor, axe-torch/scepter-focus. A single sand shade and F5 shroud, barely uses your life force and that is easily recoverable by axe 2 and torch 4. I've been swapping back and forth all weekend. Both work great.
Omg thanks for this awesome build. I didn't find a build with any class were I was able to solo the pof maps. Thanks to your build I now can. So happy bout this
I mean it's somewhat fun to play, a lot of my builds are high risk for high reward and I enjoy the fun that comes with being a nice blend of tanky and damage-spammy. The minion master toughness and AI misdirection is so overwhelmingly better than most builds, though, for PVE it's shocking. If I need to help someone in a dire situation I swap to my necromancer and say, "OK, time to bring out the big guns" and I know with ABSOLUTE certainty that whatever the problem is I can help them with it, even if it means being surrounded by 20 elite hydras. This build just chews through PVE.
I know this an older'ish video, but I got to tell you, I tried it out, and your pretty much right. I am "nearly" unkillable by Melee NPC's however, multiple NPC's with good range damage can take me down, not often, but it happens. Other than that, I do feel a whole lot OP.. but I like it.. Thanks for the info, it really helped out.
Hey man thanks for posting Necro build..new to the game and im struggling at lvl 25 to kill if theres 3-5 mobs on me this build gives me hope and motivate more to play my necro! thanks again
I logged in to youtube just to say "THANK YOU" and subscribe...this build rocks in PVE and it did pretty well in WvW by adding a well for some group damage in zergs. Great job! Now...do one for the mesmer. :)
Sure! I made a perma-dodge build which is pretty fun. Though I did one which I felt had more survival by adding toughness to the mix. I should figure out exactly what i'd done back then with that build.
I really like this build. I still die, but I'm also a casual scrub and am not fully geared. I consider it a success that I only died 2 or 3 times doing Night of Fires rather than half a dozen.
In Blood Magic you got Lesser Signet of Vampirism which triggers when you as a player manage to put 4 bleed stacks on a target. Which ability causes bleeding? I look forward to try the build out! Just recently turned lvl 80 on my first character and was doing the regular Power Reaper build, but this looks fun and more noob friendly.
omg I had a really tanky build on a regular necromancer and sort of lost that ability when I changed to a reaper. I don't remember what changed for me because it's been a while since I've played on my necro, but I just loved how unkillable I was as a regular necro so I switched back from being a reaper (which made me sad because I really like the greatsword on reaper) but now I can use this and still be a reaper *and* deal more damage than I can as a regular necro!
I run a similar build on one of my necros, but it is nothing compared to my full trailblazer scourge with parasitic contagion and epidemic. He can solo ANYTHING in pve and absolutely dumpsters most enemies in wvw.
Playing GW2 for the first time ever and I made a necromancer. Currently going through the first few levels, and my first question is, what weapon should I use when grinding?
almost same build i use. except i use dagger offhand so i can run faster. and celestial gear for much more tankyness with a small dps drop. great for solo dungeon runs.
Honestly imo this build is just overkill. The scepter/torch scourge build in metabattle has more than enough survivability already with enough dps to kill most enemies you encounter in seconds. With the amount of condi transfer, barriers and the heavy aoe cleave like Epidemic you have access to there is really nothing you have to fear in pof or hot maps.
The game is amazing , I constantly feel that I'm gonna hit a wall and not be able because I have to buy the two expansions but man..this game is so underrated.
if you replace your reaper greatsword trait with decimate defenses you will have 100% crit chance based on your vulnerability stacks and since your running axe/focus and GS you will have 25 stacks of vun ezpz
It seems this build is based around the utility skills/builds, so is it really required to use GS and Axe/Focus? Just wondering as I'm not a fan of Axe/GS in general so wondering what other options might be doable.
been using this build since reaper came out. and even used a similar verson prior to HoT. never died in combat..cliffs how ever, well there is no amount of regen to save you from gravity.
Just started playing the game again. Pretty much first time since launch and i picked necro. Thanks for this guide I was wondering if I picked a good class. Looks fun.
Do you know of a good leveling video that leads to this build? Does it matter what options I choose when creating my character? Other than choosing Necromancer?
I like the Build so much. Im about to farm gear with the stats but i only got the flame citadell gear...where could i get better gear to master the build?
Great guide!Maybe it is my gear, but I AM killable. Can you speak to why you chose Blood Fiend and not "your soul is mine"? I find blood fiend does not have the healing power I find necessary if I am coming out of shroud and am still in close proximity to a strong mob. How many minions do you typically run with?
Love the video, just started GW2 and I made a Warrior first, Necro will be my next. A quick bit of advice, invest in a gaming mouse and you will never have to click your skills again. I am an average gamer at best and my Logitech G600 makes me a lot better.
So - I've only just come back to GW2 after a 3yr absence and I don't have any of the expansions. I'm wondering how this build might need to be changed for someone without the expansions (yet) and still be awesome? Any advice?
So you said this build lacks Crit % and I know there's lots of things you can change to increase that (I'm on build editor) without sacrificing Power, since that's your main stat. What about increasing Precision over Ferocity? Or does the Crit Dmg change a lot with just a few points difference?
I highly highly highly recommend this build and choice of weapons over the PvE builds on MetaBattles. MB is still favoring a class cannon build without regards for survivability in open world PvE. This is a better solo build.
Going to use this build for the Mrs :) Thanks for the upload. Question why not Maurader's? Since that is Berzerker's plus some extra health. Just curious for the more casual players out there. Good video, good audio and good explanations :) very solid guide. Thank you for the passion for Gw2 and it's player base.
1. I really recommend this build for left handed players. 2. I'd change the minions, would use freeze instead of bone minion AND two other break stuns skills bcs on open world it is a pain in the ass wanting to mount and the minions are on berserk attacking npcs. anyways, thanks for this vid, i've been using this build ever since the video was uploaded AND IT WORKS.
I had a simular Build only difference is I used Spite Soul Reaping and like you Reaper w/ Great Sword Yet I couldn't beat Killer os Souls haven't done it since can you please advise on how to defeat that creature? forgot the chapter.
i hope u sometime will make an necromancer build for scourge and one for fractals/raids/dungeons :) i love ur videos u have helped me with my classes. keep up the good work
I found this build works better with scourge...survive better with it. plus you help your group survive better too. (for scourge you can do both condi or zerk build)
@@happyduke99 I upgraded scourge too but I didn't find a good way too play with it instead I prefer use the normal specialisation with a lot of toughness and conditions damage and with minions that grants you even more toughness and with this I barely die
I been gone a long time so I used a lvl 80 boost and tried to open reaper and it did not let me do it not sure why maybe you might be able to help me figure out why?
Hi I like this build but since I'm new to necromancer I have no idea how to use rotation. I'm used to rotation be explained in elementalist builds. Can you point me to the written version of this build with rotation or can anyone explain it to me please. Thank you :-)
I'm new to the game and just recently leveled my necro to 80, been banging my head trying to figure out which elite spec to go and this tipped the scale for me in favor of Reaper. Thanks for the video! BTW do you have a suggestion for Reaper PvP?
This is super helpful! I just started gw2 and after fumbling around and 3 accounts i went with necro, but i feel both weak and squishy. Ofc i just started and i'm only lvl 25 or so, but had no idea what to put those attribute points in. Side note, i do love the axe!
Ally Defiance some advice. I've played this game since beat. While berserker is good I prefer viper. If you ignore a necros condi abilities you potentially lost half your dps. Not dying is nice and all but in my viper gear with the build I use I do twice as much damage and live just fine. But I'm not knocking his build. It's not bad. Just not everyone's play style
I just recently hit 80 on my necro, and just have a quick question: Why are bone minions better than bone fiend? Looking at the numbers, it would seem that fiends are the better choice? What am I missing? That being said: I look forward to unlocking my elite specs, and trying your build out. :-)
Ha e you tried any variation of this that doesn't require all minions? I've been playing as scrouge for awhile now and was thinking of going back to reaper purely because I miss the great sword. I am really not a fan of minions mainly because cosmetically the all look crap, I don't mind using rise and and maybe the dark cloud for it's lf gain. Just wondering if you have tried with less or no minions and got a similar result.
Marc Santini I run spectral walk and staff to get life force quick. Along with chilled to the bone for stab and cc. The other chill shouts are good for extra dps if you are spec'd that way. I don't run minions on my build except rise sometimes
New player here, does this still work? As a WoW player, I'm always scared to play the fun looking specs, because Blizzard will hammer them to the trash tier.
Hey I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone reaching out to me in game. I just want to remind everyone what a typical hang-out sesh with me is like, I will freaking make your absolute day: ruclips.net/video/v9d3Fm-ByTM/видео.html After that we did HPs the rest of the evening until they had reaper unlocked :D Never hesistate to hit me up in game. ianboswell.5672
Death Sinner scepter is mainly condi as the 1 skill gives bleed stacks. Axe 1 gives vulnerability which is a great combo with axe 2 which does increased dmg based on vuln stacks
Put this build in gw2 skills? (Build Editor)

Just what I was looking for!

I made this build but no hero points. I went out and solo'd HP mobs in AB! This build kicks ass!
Go get 'em.

I love the Reaper. Necro was boring for me, but when that sweet, sweet Reaper came out....wowza. It's up there with Weaver and Mirage. ;u;
Build still functional? (EDIT) - It is functional, but def not unkillable. Its fairly sturdy though.
So. For me to understand better. I want to use the axe for more specificly ranged attacking and then use greatsword when i go into a group of enemies
As well is it that i nltice when you go into shroud mode you always go greatsword?
Bit late commenting maybe but wanted to say thanks for this build. Switched to it a while back and made me fall in love with my reaper.
In the video you show Blood Magic as 3-3-3 but on the Build Editor Link it shows Blood Magic as 1-3-3. Which is the Correct setup?

It comes from the Reaper specialization. I think you need the Heart of Thorns expansion. Can someone confirm what i wrote?

so its one year later and im wondering: does this still work? :D
PvE is easy, anything will work, whatever you enjoy can solo 99% of pve
It seems this build is based around the utility skills/builds, so is it really required to use GS and Axe/Focus? Just wondering as I'm not a fan of Axe/GS in general so wondering what other options might be doable.
been using this build since reaper came out. and even used a similar verson prior to HoT. never died in combat..cliffs how ever, well there is no amount of regen to save you from gravity.
Thank you for posting this, Ive been trying to find a better build for my necro cause Im sick of dying XD
i'm a little late, but i'm using almost the same traits and skill, except i'm using dagger/warhorn - axe/--- (and using soldier gear)
I know I'm a bit late but just started , saw this video and will be using this build , thanks 😊
What are good alternatives to the rise skill? I’m still not sure if I will buy the expansion yet to unlock the skill.
Camila hi im a returning player, this build still works today?
@@shinnister yes (: works pretty good!
Loving this thanks. My Necro has full Yassith's Gear, but it still rocks.
I had a simular Build only difference is I used Spite Soul Reaping and like you Reaper w/ Great Sword Yet I couldn't beat Killer os Souls haven't done it since can you please advise on how to defeat that creature? forgot the chapter.
How is this a Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire build when Reaper is a HoT specialization?
i hope u sometime will make an necromancer build for scourge and one for fractals/raids/dungeons :) i love ur videos u have helped me with my classes. keep up the good work
Love it and use it on my zerk necro, but why lord did condi reaper need to be nerfed?
I found this build works better with scourge...survive better with it. plus you help your group survive better too. (for scourge you can do both condi or zerk build)
But scourge can't rely on death shroud
@@rafaelmedina310 True, but barriers plus better mobility, condi removal, huge aoes... I found I survive better
@@rafaelmedina310 I wear full Trailblazer set with similar build (scourge of course) I rarely die.
@@happyduke99 I upgraded scourge too but I didn't find a good way too play with it instead I prefer use the normal specialisation with a lot of toughness and conditions damage and with minions that grants you even more toughness and with this I barely die
@@rafaelmedina310 Great.... As long as you found a build that you like. For scourge I use 2 2 1...with staff and scept/torch
just made one today. Thank you!
Is this build also viable for fractals and instances? I heard Condis are prefeared for that?
I been gone a long time so I used a lvl 80 boost and tried to open reaper and it did not let me do it not sure why maybe you might be able to help me figure out why?
or go for "The Butcher Power Reaper Build" by "Kroof Gaming", which I can highly recommend
What to use if you don't have rise?
Hi I like this build but since I'm new to necromancer I have no idea how to use rotation. I'm used to rotation be explained in elementalist builds. Can you point me to the written version of this build with rotation or can anyone explain it to me please. Thank you :-)
Just randomly spam every button u are gona have good results anyway.
may i ask what gs means? also in your build in the buildconstructor you seem to use a different offhand. is that on Purpose?
@@tobiasbollig6394 GS=greatsword
Hi Ian, have you tried to solo any low level fractals with this?
This videos are much better then what's in the web site, it confuses me so much...
What do you think of the superior rune of the ranger?
recently started playing this as a necro, whats the best weapon to use for my abilities? Pretty much a GW2 scrub here just using an axe.
I'm a returning player, is this still viable in 2021?
I'm new to the game and just recently leveled my necro to 80, been banging my head trying to figure out which elite spec to go and this tipped the scale for me in favor of Reaper. Thanks for the video! BTW do you have a suggestion for Reaper PvP?
I am the worst at PVP builds, but if you're free now I'm ianboswell.5672 and we can hang out
How about Bandit Champions?
Does your power, precision ferocity affect the minions power?
Can anyone tell me the Weapon Skin on the Axe and Focus.
How do the minions apply bleed?
@@drunkbillygoat Afaik viper is ascended gear, which is a long way off for me and i think most of those who choose this build.
@@sentient.ball.of.stardust don't count yourself short like that . Complete" provision master " in wvw. It opens up all HoT recipies.
can we do this build without the extention ?
I just recently hit 80 on my necro, and just have a quick question: Why are bone minions better than bone fiend? Looking at the numbers, it would seem that fiends are the better choice? What am I missing?
That being said: I look forward to unlocking my elite specs, and trying your build out. :-)
It's more a matter of how the AI handles it. I see the Fiend die a lot, and having two minions means you get double the toughness buff.
Hadn't considered the toughness buff. Cheers!
is this build still decent or even top tier right now? sorry a new player and just wondering :) appreciate your guide
The benefits are too great in my opinion. I mean you could just not summon them and only pull them out when you're in danger.
Still work, i play this build for few weeks and this is great, the DPS may not be that good but still enough.
The WvW Infusions? Where do ya get those? Thanks =)
man I wish I could give you 1000 likes, but I just can give you 1, Awesome build so far the best I have seen around for solo content.
Actually, curious. How would your minions apply bleeding?
Hey I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone reaching out to me in game. I just want to remind everyone what a typical hang-out sesh with me is like, I will freaking make your absolute day: ruclips.net/video/v9d3Fm-ByTM/видео.html
After that we did HPs the rest of the evening until they had reaper unlocked :D Never hesistate to hit me up in game.

Can u use berserker scepter instead of beserker one handed axe ? I dont have any good one handed axe just scepter
Death Sinner scepter is mainly condi as the 1 skill gives bleed stacks. Axe 1 gives vulnerability which is a great combo with axe 2 which does increased dmg based on vuln stacks
How about using assassins gear instead of berserkers
