More like the director and writers. The starts of season 2 I found only to be a little interesting and when it ended I just stopped watching. Then the drama unfold and now I blame Netflix for ruining a good franchise
A perfectly shot action scene. No shoddy camera shakes, no awful angles that hide what is happening, and no excessive use of camera cuts (this scene used none at all). This is how you do action.

He is so perfect for this role. He moves like he is in the game at times, like a dancer at other times. It is just beautiful watching him in this scene. It’s even more perfect now knowing that that one section was all one shot. Really impressive.

I hope it will be like a Daredevil hallway fight situation. In that I mean they'll have one of these one shot fight scene every season with each new one trying to one up the last.
The only issue is that this one set the bar so high the others fights in the show didn't come close. I love the show but didn't get the sense that Geralt is a master swordsman
I love it when actors refer to the characters they're playing as "me". Like "these guys were waiting for me", "I attacked them". It shows how much Henry loves playing Geralt and how no one else could ever do what he does
I think it mostly reflects that he was immersed in the role so intensely. He said in an interview that he got to the point where he was more surprised to see himself in the mirror as himself than when he was "in Geralt rig" :)
@@acc6748 Or just "they were waiting for Geralt and..." You didn't consider that option? It's the one that most actors use anyway, when they are not that immersed.
The choreography guys they used for this scene were unavailable during filming, but not during the reshoots. That is part of the reason we never see s fight scene quite like this one in any other episode
Actually, the choreography isn't that good. In the beginning Geralt is using reverse grip, which is not something a real swordsman would do, unless he's ambushed. Then Renfri is constantly spinning, which leaves her open for the strike like half of the time. Yeah, sure, Geralt doesn't want to kill her, but her fighting style kinda begs for the question - how did she manage to survive till this moment? But it looks cool, and operator's work is really great.
@@rockon609 That explains a lot.. I'm only on episode 4 and I was wondering if we'd get any more fight scenes that were as good as the first. Because this first one blew my mind. Wasn't expecting it to be so good and spot on.

Have a huge respect for this dude. His dedication to bring the character as close to the source material as possible is really rare these days. He is really humble and never forgets to give credit to the whole team on and off screen because these scenes are really nicely executed and very well shot. And the fact that he differentiates a bow arrow from a crossbow bolt. I really appreciate his attention to the little details that just shows how serious he is about this whole thing.
I love how much he clearly enjoys explaining exactly how the team achieved the shot. He talks about the technicalities of film making rather than what his contribution was. He’s a solid bloke who’s passionate about what he’s a part of.

I differ slightly: That's me when I see a really good fight scene. But it helps he has such a gorgeous voice and does such a great job talking about it.
@Sampiro Locke Most of the really good fight scenes in TV and film are terrible depictions of martial arts though... And that's fine! No one's gonna come study sword fighting from Henry Cavill, but the scene does a great job setting a thrilling pace for the audience, convey the characters' emotions and telling a story throughout. That's what it ought to do
Sampiro Locke we have to take into account that while skill is something very important to depict in scenes like this one, it is still a fight built for the sole purpose of entertainment. Not saying I don’t agree with you as I myself don’t know much about martial arts, but the creators of the show most likely cared more for the visual appeal of the shot rather than how accurate it was to the skill level they attempted to portray.
Sampiro Locke it’s fantasy mate, it’s meant to be unrealistic. Yes spinning in a fight would get you killed in real life, but guess what? It fucking looks cool. It’s like saying Game of Thrones was bad because it had dragons and dragons are unrealistic.
Sampiro Locke totally agree. But we see that all the time in movies and tv, so the fight scene looks more titillating. I’m constantly telling my daughter that if you do all those twirls and fancy stuff, you are putting your back to your enemy for no good reason and will get killed or injured. But, Hollywood. 🥴
it was very exotic. good thing this is a fantasy story and not that of genuine warfare with swords. all the twirling and whirling and changes of grip we see in such series these days(ala GoT, Vikings, LOTR) is not what real swordplay is like even if it is a ton of fun.
Yeah, you often don't think of how scenes like this require absolute perfection from everyone, both in front of the camera & behind it. They did a phenomenal job on bringing how he became The Butcher of Blaviken to life. Too bad he just quit as Geralt though due to Netflix not respecting Sapkowski's work, he said a while ago that he'd stay on as Geralt as long as they honored the author & his work by staying accurate to the books. It seems they didn't stand up to their end of the bargain.
As cinematography? Indeed! As actors and stunts proficiency? Absolutely! As a way to tell the story of Renfri trying to kill or get killed by Geralt? I agree. As a narrative? Not so, it's really obscure why Renfri tries to kill Geralt or wants to get killed by him, it serves no purpose of hers
Unfortunately this incredible sequence was just done once in the entire season. I would have loved to see more of him obliterating people in this fashion several more times.
The series is based on the books, there isn't any other blood bath like this there as it's out of character. The action in the books comes from Geralt fighting monsters and that was well represented in the series. That being said, yes, it would've been pretty cool to see more of this.
@@ionesito I feel like they could have taken liberties since it's 'based on' the books. It's done all the time with movies & TV shows that are based on actual events. I don't know the books at all though, so I suppose it's good they're working so closely with the source material!
I wonder if we will ever see the scene where he wastes these bandits that are about to rape a peasant girl because she looks kinda like Ciri. That was nuts
actually shout-out to these actors actually learning how to weild a sword and make it look real, no matter if it's a whole blade or a half one such precision and cleanness and realisticality really gives this show so much more than if they just switch to stuntmen doing everything also shout-out to the effects and editing team, because what they did was literal magic, I don't even wanna know how long they worked on the sword in every shot to make it look shiny, but also used and bloody, those are so many textures one had to get right and with this I want to say, this is probably one of the best produced shows I've ever seen
I seen all these people critic this show as awful but there wasn't a single episode I disliked I truly do love this series and I can't wait for season 2
I think the only people who think the show is awful are snobs & people who has only played the games but never read the books & expected the show to follow games point by point.
@@mario1515 Inconsistency in the story, which was hard to follow, bad acting, boring dialogue. Fell asleep during a few episodes and had to rewatch. I love the fantasy genere and I really like Cavill's acting, but this series felt like a quick cash grab from Netflix.
Never trust the masses. Remember when almost everyone was so dissatisfied that they picked Henry as Geralt? The same can be applied to new Batman of Pattinson, hopefully he'll nail it
Patterson isn't the problem. The problem is that DC has completely failed to inspire any hope they'll make a good movie, and no matter how talented the actor, a bad script will result in a bad film.
I remember when the internet exploded in rage over Heath ledger cast as the Joker. .... he was a shit actor. he always plays the hero ..... hes too nice....too pretty......then he fucking *CRUSHED* it!
The first episode, to me, was just the best in terms of storyline, how engaging it was, and how it was directed. This scene was done so masterfully, I remember being shocked when I watched it. And now watching Henry break it down further, it’s even more impressive. The stunt work and camera work. Wow. Thank you Henry for being so technical with your explanation!
"I hope it wasn't too detailed. I tend to get a little excited about these things". And this is why Henry was the perfect guy to play Geralt. I could watch him talk about EVERY scene in this series and not get bored. Toss a like to your Witcher!
"I hope you enjoyed the video. I hope it wasn't too detailed". Henry, you can be as detailed as you like. Your passion towards the character and the Witcher universe is infectious.

I've watched the series now at least 6 times and these two particular sword fight scenes are absolutely mesmerizing to watch. The fact that the first one where Gerault is fighting the gang is done in a single shot is spectacularly incredible, the amount of pinpoint timing required by so many people, including the cameraman is exquisite and seemingly flawless. The second sword fight with Renfri really does look like an intricately detailed dance, the moves between them are this whirling, spiraling dance of swords and death. I love hearing about the backstory behind scenes and this one by Henry does not disappoint! It's always worth the repeat viewing of this series. I am so looking forward to another, and many more seasons.
"the difficult is we all have to preform like the "sword" is full length, when its only half length " Me to the new porn director about the upcoming video shoot.
I personally wouldn't complain if Henry got more detailed about things. I love watching people talking about something they're excited about, and he clearly loves this.

@@cjtrules1 Fighting in general is a vicious, violent struggle - just look at any barroom/parking lot brawl (especially if someone pulls a knife) and tell me that resembles a dance. Fighting, in general, rarely ever tells a story either.
@@plushdogg124 Lol, let me add an edit to my comment then. All ORGANIZED fighting is a dance. A fight between skilled people can tell a lot actually if you break it down.
@@cjtrules1 Agreed. Organized fighting (especially martial arts) is definitely a dance. Pro wrestling and choreographed fight scenes just have more control over the story that is told.
Same here. Apart from the obvious perks, I did enough martial arts to see and recognise many moves, but not all. Therefore I'd be very interested in those I don't know. :)
Henry Cavill was created by the Universe to play Geralt just like Ian Mckellen and Viggo Mortensen was created to play Gandalf and Aragorn (Just like the rest of the casting of Lotr).

Anyone else feels like Emma Appleton was just perfect for the show in every way imaginable, and it's kind of a missed opportunity that she only got to play a character who is killed off so early? Anyhow, great job girl!
But it wouldn't be the same if she played another character (say, Yennefer, who doesn't fight with weapons), so it's more precisely a shame that her character got killed off early (though it couldn't be avoided, since that's what happens in the books).
I felt their chemistry more than I felt it between Yen and him. And the way it was written he carried the memory of Renfri with him throughout the rest of the season where he doesn't with Yen. It's likely due to the time lapses between episodes, but their 'relationship' didn't resonate with me as much as his and Renfri's did and they were only together for 1 day. :( (caveat here, I must admit though I can watch Henry and Anya kissing in EP 6 all day long!)

I love that he *does* have knowledge about the technicalities of shooting an action scene. He seems very appreciative of the production team and I appreciate that.
This man is a true working one. It's easy to see how much he loves the role and his job, and how much he knows about everyone's task, the appreciation he has for his partners. Really cool video.
The whole season is a true masterpiece. The amount of details I noticed after watching a second time, then a third time, it's just incredible. I love how each episode has a theme, and how the story is told, piece by piece, without chronology. Not to mention more than a hundred easter eggs from video games and books that I love. Amazing !
I didn’t think it was bad but I didn’t think it was good either. First off, it’s very confusing for people new to the series. What they should have done is first explained what is a witcher and how they are trained(trial of the grasses, law of surprise). And then they should have gone with chronological order. The whole Cintra storyline was really confusing even for me who have read the books because of the flashbacks. Another thing is that I feel like it gave way too much time for the sorceresses instead of Geralt. Especially the finale was really unpleasing for me. The effects looked cool and all but it honestly felt like I was watching Game of Thrones with some extra magic. Also the Nilfgaardian armor looked fake and the Sylvan mask was hilariously noticeable. They also barely gave Triss any screentime which is weird since she is an important character in the books. Also they portrayed Vilgefortz as a total idiot hothead.
I did like some things though. Geralt, Jaskier and Yennefer all were portrayed very well by their actors. I got to also give it to Ciri’s actress. She is really good for her age. Jaskier totally made the season for me especially his song ”toss a coin for your witcher”. And Cavill crushed it as Geralt. The fight scenes were good. Fast movements, flashy and brutal.
@@torakka2ow640 Having read the books too I think they made some weird decisions. Obviously we'll see more of Triss in Kaer Morhen but why did they turn Cahir into a madman and Francesca Vigo into a psychopath? Makes no sense if they want to faithfully adapt the whole saga.

He is so perfect for this role. He moves like he is in the game at times, like a dancer at other times. It is just beautiful watching him in this scene. It’s even more perfect now knowing that that one section was all one shot. Really impressive.
He is one of us.
The fun thing with Henry being Geralt is that he has read all the books and played all the games so he knows alot of everything. He is a true nerd and it shows and that is what makes it so incredible to watch

I hope that the person who put this action scene will participate in all other fights in the second season.
I hope it will be like a Daredevil hallway fight situation. In that I mean they'll have one of these one shot fight scene every season with each new one trying to one up the last.
exactly, Netflix needs to double the budget and get the stunt team that work on that scene to work on all fight scenes on season 2 and onward
The stunt director is Vlad Furdik, who played the Night King in GOT. He’s among the best in the business.
The only issue is that this one set the bar so high the others fights in the show didn't come close. I love the show but didn't get the sense that Geralt is a master swordsman
Actually this fight was not Vladamir Furdyk, he came on after episode 1, he will not be in Season 2!
Okay so we’re totally going to get bonus content of Cavill breaking down the whole season right? Because I’d watch it repeatedly.

I love it when actors refer to the characters they're playing as "me". Like "these guys were waiting for me", "I attacked them". It shows how much Henry loves playing Geralt and how no one else could ever do what he does
I think it mostly reflects that he was immersed in the role so intensely. He said in an interview that he got to the point where he was more surprised to see himself in the mirror as himself than when he was "in Geralt rig" :)
thats what happens when a talented actor plays a character he already is a huge fan of
this man has probably played geralt in his head more times then he can count
Well, what should he say? '' the character I was playing attacked them ''
'' these guys were waiting for the character I was playing ''
@@acc6748 Or just "they were waiting for Geralt and..." You didn't consider that option? It's the one that most actors use anyway, when they are not that immersed.
"It's all done in one take."
... The question on everybody's minds: how many takes did they have to do?!
probably a few, but you can bet they spent a hell of a load of time in the lead up rehearsing it to the nth degree.
4 days he said in a different interview
So insane its 1 take. I wondered about that! What a great team
Slow damn clap for it being one take as well, so easily could have been bits stitched together.
this makes this scene so much better, compared to some action flicks like Taken with 20 takes for 10 seconds ...
This is not only 'a fight scene', it is THE fight scene, holy shit that is a really great choreography!
And cinematography, editing and acting.
AND NO SHAKY-CAM! Thank god...

There are “gigs” and then there are roles. So glad to see Cavill become the Witcher. Truly the right actor for the role.
His enthusiasm is breathtaking. His love for this character and the story shines through. Love it!
The fight with Renfri got me hooked to the show. It was the best sword fight I had ever seen. And it's so rare that it involves a man and a woman too.
I appreciate how he basically said 'everyone on and off camera that worked on this scene worked really, really hard to pull this off'.
This whole shot. Masterpiece.
Agreed! It was a good idea to bring on Wolfgang for the reshoots which made this fight scene.

If the series gets more budget and Henry keeps doing his portrayal of Geralt *this good,* this series might end in one of the greatest jewels on TV

I love that he breaks it down in detail. The behind the scenes commentary is just as exciting for me as the actual show. I hope they continue to do more of these, so long as it doesn't overwork the cast. I enjoyed this very much. 🥰
Now I want Henry to read the entire saga via audiobook...
How friendly and nice this guy is.
GOT fight scenes left the chat
this is not realistic in got if 1 guy fight 6-7 guys it felt like he'll die but here we all knew witcher will kill them easily he has magic he can dodge freaking crossbow
i prefer got version of sword fighting
Were they ever even in the chat?
GOT fight scenes never even tried. I worked on several productions and seeing what GOT put out, while Into the Badlands upped the ante, was literally disappointing. The only thing even getting close to a neatly choreographed fight were 20 Seconds of Arya showing off against Brienne.
Idk, when the hound wanted his chicken, that was an excellent fight scene. Credit where it's due, I loved Geralt's fights here, and GoT had some good ones too.
@@oldsk00l That scene has plenty of cuts and only basic sword play, great editing though, nothing even close to what they did here. Pacing too slow, but the acting was top notch.
6:02 - HE'S SO FREAKING CUTE 😍 He knows everything and that's just a proof to his commitment to this amazing character and his incredible story! You're superb, Henry 💜
There's something special about this particular scene that makes it very enjoyable to watch, even for someone who doesn't generally care for fight scenes. I think it comes down to what Henry said, they're also telling a story while fighting. It really shows!
"Or Shrike" Oh Henry, you handsome, name-dropping devil
