It's a more interesting discussion than simple "not realistic" and gives more depth to the topic of analysis. I like hearing about how difficult or impossible some of the feats are.
Yeah. Like, the biggest thing I've seen with "Experts react to Witcher" is always saying it's not realistic or that it's not optimal to do something like that, but they never take into the context the game and/or character. Like, Geralt is a mutant with superhuman strength/speed/endurance, even stronger senses, and extremely intelligent. Don't know lore wise but in the 3rd game he can decapitate a flipping Griffin or a bear in a single swing. Like sure the spinning is unnecessary and deflecting arrows is probably not optimal compared to just dodging but from what I understand I think Geralt shows off on purpose from time to time and the choreographers/developers have to make it look cool and engaging as well. If he is capable of doing so, what's the harm in making him do so.

I'mma disagree with a thing. First, just awesome, love the video, I always enjoy it when people can point out the issues without being down on the show, and these guys are great. But in reference to sword and dagger being impractical. When I did historical fencing, sword and dagger was my absolute favourite combination. You mention that having both is an issue because you're trying to fight on two fronts, but that's exactly why I preferred it. For fencing, we primarily used rapiers, which for those who don't know are long and moderately heavy one handed swords. The best thing for me was to also use a dagger, for two reasons of equal import. One, parrying. The dagger is all forte (strong part, means it's harder to beat it aside) which gives me the ability to parry any angle my rapier wasn't covering, often with even more success. Secondly, and my favourite thing. If I'm fighting someone with just a rapier, I can use my to sort of lock in, pushing as close as I can and keeping my guard on their blade, then stab them anywhere I want. I know rapiers are different to longswords, but if anything I think this would be even more useful with one. The rapier is a much slower weapon than any longsword I've used.
Agreed, you are entirely correct. And they are a good complement to a longsword or arming sword, of you use them properly. There was a reason Sword and Dagger was incredibly popular, but you need to know you to use them together, which these guys don't. When used together, the sword is primary attacker, with the dagger supporting, looking for a cross (contact with the enemy blade) with the dagger moving to support. You can then free your sword to attach with it and leave the dagger behind, meaning the enemy's sword is not able to be used as you have the dagger to bind and block the sword. Also the dagger is used primarily defensively, only offensively when the person closes to grapple or short distance, you don't try to hang it out there and use it. Other big advantage is you can uncross the dagger and sword (with 2 long weapons, if you try to move them passed each other onto other lines, the weapons get tangled. not so with a long weapon and a dagger).
@@meyr1992 No, I'm talking historical fencing. This is actual swordplay used in dueling with nobles and the like, with lives on the line. I think you'll find competitive fencing doesn't allow a dagger. But a dagger adds so much to your repetoire. Swords are unwieldy when they get closer, daggers are designed for that. Add the enormous control a dagger will give you over an opponents sword, and you're set. I explained everything in detail in my full one, so I won't repeat myself, but yes. While there's no doubt that these fencers know their stuff about swordsmanship But,due to the weapons and time period, I think HEMA practitioners would have been a better choice
In book it is almost a blur when is fighting in melee because of the speed, make sense because he is a mutant. In the show it was bit slowed down but still looks really fast.

I feel like gameology should be more informative about the games shown In the case of the witcher the reason Geralt fights that way is because it's interpreted in the book he has a dancing like fighting style both the author and CD Project Red depict this. I believe Gamology should do research into the games and inform the experts to compare in their line of work

I much like this video more than the other sword expert reacting to the scene a few months back, who criticized his swordplay harshly and didn't know Geralt is highly mutated with about 90+ yrs of experience in fighting/swordplay to boot 😅.
As I remember Geralts style of fighting has dancing on it I dont know what its called but the reasom why he does the consecutive spins because he uses the spin for the next blow to be more powerful thats why he spins left to right and it comes with a risk of exposing your back...Im glad they analyzed it great here and they have an idea what geraly is and what he can do
"Sword experts" dont realise that geralt using a bastard sword like you would a basket hilted broad or back sword. In italian terms, its all about that dui tempo riposte. As people have mentioned its far better explained in other media, but it visually well created here. The idea is that the witcher can use his super human speed and his dancing stylento engage multiple opponents. When effectively splits his dui tempo riposte into two seperate fights, going for a contra tempo thrust against a second opponent, and then completing the circle into stesso tempo parry and second riposte against his first opponent who will likely be in the middle or second riposte step of their own dui tempo parry of his riposte. Noting that all these terms would never be applied to the polish sabre style that this is supposed to be based on, but I don't know what they would call it.
Yes, well, Italian is probably the most developed of the languages when it comes to Historical fencing, as they use a standard terminology across multiple systems with a quite broad lexicon to be able to describe actions. I also think a dagger would be a better comparison for how hes using the sword in this fight. He's in close quarters, so can;t use the full length of the blade, so putting into a reverse grip allows the use it almost as a dagger in a "ice pick" grip, which also explains why most of use time is duo tempi, as it is effectively a shorter weapon. He's also using a grappling and wrestling effectively, as he is often using his off hand to grapple and move his opponents. They really should have got the HEMA guys back, they were much more knowledgeable.
Its nice to see one of these where they acknowledge the superhuman nature of the hero and not just "oh thats unrealistic" like everyone doesn't know already
If you're going to keep bringing the fencing guys in for swordfighting scenes, why not do it with sword fights that are closer to what they actually do? Just saying, stuff like The Count of Monte Cristo, The Mask of Zorro, The Musketeer, The Princess Bride, etc are all far closer to the Olympic-style fencing these two do than anything you've brought them on for so far, and their commentary towards those fights would probably be far more knowledgeable and interesting...just a thought
I think it's so cool that they could easily criticize this for being over the top, but they instead recognize it while also saying, "but it was really cool to watch and he's a mutant so he can get away with that stuff." Too many people look for ultra-realism in stuff like this. This was a super cool breakdown of how someone could actually pull off a lot of these moves, how this translates to real life, while also recognizing the ability of the choreographers and the actors performing this scene, and just how awesome it was to watch! Awesome video, thanks for making this, it was cool :)
It's nice that they take a realistic approach to these scenes from fantasy shows/games. Some people would just say "Oh that's not possible." but they recognize that Geralt is a Witcher, so he has abilities, strength and stamina above normal humans
Wow ive watched this scene countless times, constantly rewinding spots of the fight over and over and I never noticed the 2nd crossbow block. I did wonder a few times why the half elf was still holding the crossbow when Geralt made it to his location since he had plenty of time to reload and to drop said crossbow and draw a sword. Thanks guys I appreciate this fight even more now than I did before.
These guys are sport fencers and stage fighters. They know the epee, foil, saber as part of Olympic fencing and fighting safely on camera. They are not experts on historical fighting with a longsword/bastard sword as taught by Liechtenauer, Meyer, Talhoffer, Fiore, etc. You need your HEMA guys for that.
Eye opening. I was on the point of seeing fencers as practitioners of a sport, with some conection to realistic melee action, but not that much. They're really taking this apart and go beyond fencing. Really impressed here.

Ur comparing fencing( a simulated fight with rules) to real life combat…. In a battle you would rather use anything other than a sword and a dagger
Important part, I was talking about swordplay where survival is the only goal.
This is the place where geralt earns his title...."The butcher of blaviken"
sigh....read the books...they did these short stories dirty with the adaptation. i still appreciate that it exists and brings it into mainstream culture but damn did they butcher some of these stories....
@@ipraytovodka. The majority of the audience is from the games, so for most it doesn’t matter how true it is to the books. I’d let the team have artistic freedom with their adaptation. The choreography and story is still amazing
@@ipraytovodka not just side stories. Main theme is destiny, everyone is talking about destiny and in whole season one it ends with only talking about destiny. For me whole main theme is so shallow that you couldn't even remember it if they didn't talk about it every few minutes. I can't feel the destiny betwen Geralt and Ciri. For me it's just another fantasy series from hollywood that besides characters has nothing to do with books.

Guy with the mustache is exactly how I would imagine a fencer looking
I feel like, having been familiar with this first from the games where it's a noodle incident as opposed to the minor skirmish the show portrays it as, the show does an awesome job showing how much more capable/powerful than an ordinary human a Witcher is in how effortlessly Geralt cuts down the force arrayed against him.
While there's no doubt that these fencers know their stuff about swordsmanship
But,due to the weapons and time period, I think HEMA practitioners would have been a better choice
There is a reaction video with a long sword instructor from London that Insider did
Not really
They are Hema instructors, check out the Witcher 3 video
Nope, they simply said throughout the whole Witcher 3 video that it's not realistic without knowing that Geralt is capable of doing those things
@@wisemanlincoln1399 nope. Not the same guys. These are sports fencers. Not HEMA. Hate these sword tag players.
Henry Cavill did all this stunts himself! That's why it looks so much more convincing despite the over the top scenes.
In book it is almost a blur when is fighting in melee because of the speed, make sense because he is a mutant. In the show it was bit slowed down but still looks really fast.
This guy looks like the male version of Ellie's gf in TLOU2

I feel like gameology should be more informative about the games shown In the case of the witcher the reason Geralt fights that way is because it's interpreted in the book he has a dancing like fighting style both the author and CD Project Red depict this. I believe Gamology should do research into the games and inform the experts to compare in their line of work
Every time... they have zero background knowledge about most of the reacts.
They are analyzing if its realistic or feasible or not, being mutant or sword "dancing"/is irrelevant, seems many people complain about they not having context yet the same people who complain seem to not understand they analyze it under the context of realism a and feasibility
@@alexmag342 what the experts did in this video is great, they understood that it's a tv show, and that he is mutated, and moved on past that, to criticize the movement, possibility, feat if it was in a realistic scenario without trashing/nitpicking everything.

Love these guys almost as much as the marines so much passion and fun to listen to
Loved this episode, their interactions here were awesome to see and their overall enjoyment and enthusiasm was great.
Even for a witcher, parrying arrows/bolts mid flight is not easy. Geralt himself said it's something that scares him when he has to do it.
Why do people rush to the comments the moment a video is released? I know why I do it.
I check to see if my dad's here
@@6Shi6Kei6 is he?
I love the actual break down, well done
Because these are fencers. They need to stop bringing these sword tag players here. Bring back the real HEMA sword fighters.
You're overthinking the hell out of this. Don't take it so seriously, these guys didn't. The fight is unrealistic as hell.
I didn't understand a word of what you just said
Gotta say as a stage fighter I learned a very different numbering system for the parrys and it’s interesting to see how our systems differ!
As a pretend fighter you need to know that the plural of 'parry' is 'parries'.

I think fencing and Medieval European sword fighting are two different things.
Thank you! What do 2 millennial fencers know about actual SWORD combat ?

If you're going to keep bringing the fencing guys in for swordfighting scenes, why not do it with sword fights that are closer to what they actually do? Just saying, stuff like The Count of Monte Cristo, The Mask of Zorro, The Musketeer, The Princess Bride, etc are all far closer to the Olympic-style fencing these two do than anything you've brought them on for so far, and their commentary towards those fights would probably be far more knowledgeable and interesting...just a thought
These guys seem really cool! Bring them in more often

I think it's so cool that they could easily criticize this for being over the top, but they instead recognize it while also saying, "but it was really cool to watch and he's a mutant so he can get away with that stuff."
Too many people look for ultra-realism in stuff like this. This was a super cool breakdown of how someone could actually pull off a lot of these moves, how this translates to real life, while also recognizing the ability of the choreographers and the actors performing this scene, and just how awesome it was to watch!

It's crazy how much better "her sweet kiss" is than the toss a coin song.
i recently discovered that this was a cover of a real song...forget wtf it actually was tho cuz im an uncultured swine
Eye opening. I was on the point of seeing fencers as practitioners of a sport, with some conection to realistic melee action, but not that much. They're really taking this apart and go beyond fencing. Really impressed here.
Actually, if someone has been reading the books, Gerald rarely deflects arrows, and even if he does, except for one moment at almost the end of the sagam he manages to deflect two consecutives arrows, followed by him saying that it will very much never happen again...
But i mean he is super fast and his eyes can process the arrow super quickly
@@nightquill5647 Yes and no. He has more reflexes than a regular huma, besides of that the witchers develop a keen perception through the earlys stages of their training regime, witch they keep developing without stoping. But there's a limit to how much they could pay atention in a battle and in witch details will they focus more... Sure, if Geralt is by himself against a not so large group like the one in the video (with only 1 or 2 archers) he could pull it out maybe once or two, but that consumes mental energy, and if he keeps like that eventually will exhaust himself and lose (something that happens quite a lot in the books). Remember that he's no overpowered mc, he COULD AND WILL get killed in any moment if he tires a lot or f**ks up...
Ignacio Calcagno but i mean he was kinda moving slow in this fight and had like 3 seconds between each person and they had to reload and shit
@@nightquill5647 Oh yeah, with enough time to focus between movements its easy to Geralt to do it, besides in this scene the enemies are using crossbows, witch gives him more time to prepare or counteratack them. But put Gerald (even with friends in arms) against a hole squad of soldiers and a bunch of archers with bows in it and surely he will say "F**k..." xD
