      Hi Beth, my daughter is in her second year at UCSB. As a heads up, the housing crisis is real. Do not count on the "guaranteed" 2nd year of housing if your child decides to attend UCSB. My daughter and her friends do not know anyone that was offered a second year in off-campus housing for the academic year 2022-2023.

    if you really want to go to ucsb but don’t get accepted, you can always enroll in sbcc (Santa Barbara city college) and then enroll to ucsb through the transfer program. it takes about 2 years to complete the courses/program at sbcc before you can start the transfer process.

      If a student work hard just to take classes for college admission. I would not go to cc and transfer. CC is just high school diploma that anyone can apply.

      @@yya6264 I regret not doing the transfer program through SBCC. You can knock out all your GE's at SBCC for the first two years and then you're guaranteed acceptance to a UC where you'll get your degree two years later. The same degree for half the price and the classes are just as good at SBCC. When I was at UCSB many of my professors also lectured at CC, classes are nearly identical.

    omg, I cannot believe how much has changed! I'm an UCSB alum. Many years ago, now, but still a gaucho! Just a few of the things that changed: When I went there there wasn't enough housing and like half of the freshmen lived in IV in privately owned dorms (I did). It rained a whole heck of a lot in winter, and IV would regularly flood. It was so fun to get out in it and we canoed the streets of IV! The UCEN was a dead zone. The basketball team was the big draw, not soccer. Ultimate was huuuuge. And it looks like they "officially" changed the name of FT from Francisco Torres to...whatever that name was. And it looks like the theater in IV was bought by UCSB? It burned down when I was at school, and sat there a black wreckage for the rest of the time I was there - the school buying it was probably the best thing that could have happened! I'm glad things are still great, there!

    It's interesting that after 30 years, so little has changed in terms of pros and cons.
    However, one thing that has changed (for the better) are more POC students at UCSB. 30 years ago, I was a fish out of water as one of the few Latinos there. My son is sitting on the fence choosing between colleges. I'll shoot this video to him. GO GAUCHOS!

    class of 2005 here. Oh, how I missed the good old days. One of the best times I've ever had was attending basketball and volleyball games at Thunderdome. A lot of fans come out, especially Gaucho Locos (I still have those yellow shirts.) One thing that's never changed about UCSB is how out of control parties are in IV on weekends and how expensive it is to live there. Never understood why kids want to live on DP and pay $4K+ a month in rent. My friends and I always hung out at Java Jones sipping coffee we can barely afford and Mexican restaurant called FreeBirds. I dunno if it's still there. So many unforgettable experiences! Living in the dorms was one of them. Freshman year I lived at Francisco Torres, which was a privately own building off campus on El Colegio Rd now owned by UCSB. We used to call it "FT" or "Fuck Towers." The most heartbreaking event during my time at UCSB was David Abbott, I believe that's his name. A guy who plowed through a crowd of college students who were out partying in IV on that horrible weekend. Through good times and bad, UCSB is definitely a great place to learn and grow. Your experience is what you make of it. Cherish every moment. I miss it a lot!!

      You have the option to choose your top 3 residence halls and the type of room you want to live in. It can be a single, double, or a triple. With all that is going on this year, they’re most likely going to narrow down rooms to at least a double if not a single. Keep in mind that a triple is the least expensive option and single is the most expensive.

      Sorry that this is late, but most grad students I knew lived in Goleta or near Santa Barbara, since it is a little more peaceful and cheaper! You can also apply for family housing, which is very affordable and convenient housing (if you have a close friend, partner, or family member). In terms of social life, I guess it depends on the department because you will have many opportunities (seminars, classes, retreats, TAing) to get to know other grad students and hang out with them! In addition to this, I know some grad students will become involved with sports, clubs, and even rec-cen classes.

      I didn't go as in-depth with commuter parking just because there aren't a lot of people who commute, but I know that there's parking passes for commuters that cost less. You can't park in residence hall parking (duh) but I think you park near a bus loop if I'm not mistaken. You can go to UCSB's TPS website (transportation and parking services) to see what other passes they have. If you can take the bus, do that instead!

      You can't live in the dorms on campus BUT they have campus apartments, most are on the side where FT/San Catalina is at. I lived in the undergrad apartments called San Joaquin right next to FT, so now only do freshmen live there but also transfers/juniors/seniors do as well.
      Transfers are guaranteed 2 years of living in the apartments if you choose to do so, and I highly recommend it, you get to meet a lot of people from various ages and backgrounds rather than living in IV and kinda having only a certain amount in that house you're living at.

    • @dsanc19
      @dsanc19  4 года назад +3

      Yeah, it can be intimidating, but I think the best way of trying to put it into perspective is that most high schools work on a quarter system with a bunch of classes (6-8) with some set difficulty. For UCSB, they recommend you take 12 units (roughly 3 classes) to start off with, so you get to gradually get used to the different pace. But of course that's all up to preference! I love the faster pace but it really does depend on the student. Hopefully this can ease that intimidation a bit haha
