This video just reminded me that it was so cute being on campus and seeing incoming freshmen tour the school this past weekend with their families, it really makes me excited for first years to be able to start school outside of the pandemic this fall.

    • @MrPerry435
      @MrPerry435 3 года назад +2

I agree. I saw a lot of that in Late April and May. I tried helping a couple of families get around because I know how daunting the size of the campus seems at first. It took me a good month to actually know how to navigate the campus and not get lost every time. Even now I don’t know where everything is on campus.
I hope things are better in fall because no hate, but it was a pretty boring first year, but I’m feeling optimistic for next year!

I go to UC Davis and can say a big con is that THEY ARE SLOW TO ANNOUNCE THINGS. example students didn’t know when or if students can attend in person classes until like July. Other school got it in May.

Big con is definitely a lack of school spirit and things to do. Well it's kind of hard to determine, there's lots to do but it's not in your face. Davis is horrible at letting you know about events, or they'll spam your inbox until you start ignoring their emails, no in between. You have to join clubs and be on the look out for opportunities. But because of this the campus rarely feels alive unless you're at the MU or silo during the day. It's just a big campus I feel like they could hold lots of events.
I feel like they need to do bigger things like festivals or stuff like that. But yeah Davis accepts a specific type of student, people who are chill but hard working.

I'll definitely second that lack of school spirit con. It really is odd that a D-1 school like Davis- with good football, basketball, and other sports - doesn't have much school spirit. I swear, I've talked to so many students here and they didn't even know that we have a football team or that Women's basketball is kinda, sorta a powerhouse. It seems like once Davis moved up from D-2 in the 2000s, a lot of school spirit just vanished :(

Affordable housing can be found at UC Davis, unlike UC Berkeley. The campus is huge and you will need a bicycle to get from one class to another. Be sure to get a secure lock for your bicycle as bike thefts are common on the campus. It is a great school.

The town of Davis is totally devoted to the University. It is D-1A after being D-2 power. Sports are developed with great coaching, but not dominant to the experience(s) Realize pretty much A students that want to go on to professional school. If you stay in CA, UC Davis on a resume is Strong.
I got a 4 yr degree in 70's, lived through too many recessions. I always got the interview. Got Sacramento, SF and Lake Tahoe within a 1-2 hours.

38 years old. Born and raised in Davis, spent 2 years at UCDavis before transferring. Moved back during the pandemic to help family.
This guy is right on the money about all of the pros and cons. But I will add one thing. Davis is not boring if you consider it a launching pad for all kinds of nearby weekend activities:
2 hours to Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Donner Lake (Best hikes around)
1.5 hours to Dillon beach (dog friendly!)
1 Hour to Bay Area (Berkeley) plan for 1.5 hours to Downtown SF
1 Hour to Grass Valley for great hiking and rivers
45 or less minutes to Lake Berryessa for hiking and swimming
30 minutes to Sacramento for access to great rivers
Access to 4 International Airports in reasonable distance: SMF 25 minutes, SFO plan for 2.5 hours, OAK 2 Hours, SJC 3 Hours.
It is situated in a great spot that has access to many more things than I listed above that can be used when students have a day or two off. This is one of Davis' biggest advantages.
    Cheers!

I need advice abt choosing colleges: ucsd (seventh college, general biology) or uc Davis (biological scjences)? I'm premed and they seem to have super similar opportunities and difficulty. The prices are the same, I have friends at both schools so I'll have a social life, and the location doesn't matter to me. I've researched my major's prerequisites and professors at each school but still can't decide. Talking with current students hasn't helped sway me either :( which college would you recommend? Is there something I forgot to consider?

    • @KarlenBell
      @KarlenBell 3 года назад +5

I'm in UCD, and I know someone who has been to UCSD and got sick of the "Socially Dead" (SD) environment (pre-covid) and he dropped out. Then he used his same Community College transcript just to come to UCD. I think both D and SD are pretty well known for their Biology...stuff, so imo it really depends on what kind of environment you want to choose to be in.

      Congrats!!
      For tips/advice:
      - When you have the time, think about what classes you want to take in the Fall (or whenever you start). I ended up taking a few classes with no relevance to my major/career due to the lack of planning
      - Advisors generally recommend taking less than 15 units the first quarter (at least that was the case when I was an undergrad), but if you think you could handle the workload, go for it. That additional class could mean you have to take 1 less class your senior year
      - Meet with your major advisors to plan out your quarters. I would do this as soon as you can so you have a clear picture of what workload to expect each quarter/year.
      - If you're set on a career path, take a look at the major requirements and think about the courses you want to take:
      Links:
      Degree requirements: managerialeconomics.ucdavis.edu/degree-requirements
      Course descriptions: managerialeconomics.ucdavis.edu/course-descriptions
I think that's a good start, but you have any additional questions during your journey, feel free to ask!
      I hope that helps.

Hey Victor! I am transferring from a community college in the Bay and got accepted into UC Davis and still can't decide whether I want that to be my choice or SDSU which is more down south and holds a different vibe. Is it possible for me to find a place on campus or is it too expensive? Or is it better to have to live in the city out-of-campus? Lastly, is it easy to find roommates and such for a house if you don't really know anyone from that area?

    • @VictorLai

I think on-campus housing is reserved for first-year students. You can rent university-affiliated apartments like Russell Park Apartments, but they are usually filled up very quickly.
I definitely recommend joining FaceBook groups for Davis housing. There are a few groups that have multiple listings posted each day.
My info might be outdated, but that would be a great place to start. I hope that helps!
