I have a very important question, I just got admitted to UCSD as an undergraduate, and I got admitted as a major in Electrical Engineering, which is my alternate major. My main major that I chose is Mechanical Engineering. Do you think there's any way that I could change my major to Mechanical Engineering instead? Thanks in advance.
I think you’ll probably have to apply to mechanical engineering. Since it’s a capped major, they’ll likely look at your grades, then put you in a lottery system to be allowed into the major. I’m not totally sure though, so I’d reach out to UCSD academic advising about the specifics. Good luck!
We have an important decision to make. We are from east coast, and my daughter got accepted at UCSD comp sci. and is debating the credentials with Northeastern univ which has great coop program. Thanks ! The information you provided is very helpful. I agree that oos tuition is quite Expensive. Can you please let me know how you got in state tuition at UCSD.
I’m indecisive. I got into UCSB and UCSD as a Neurobiology major. Which one do you think is best for me taking into consideration that I’m pre-med, and interested in Music recording?
That's a big decision and unfortunately I can't make that for you :/ . I never visited UCSB so I can't speak on the campus, but I know its a great school. UCSD is also a great school in a great area, and I know that many students at UCSD are STEM and pre-med. Either choice I think is gonna be great for you. If I were you I'd go through the courses at each school for your major, research/internship opportunities nearby, consider the social life/surrounding area, and the overall price. Hope this helps a little!
Homie go to UCSB if you're actually trying to go pre-med, you're only going to get very minimal benefits from the "prestige" UCSD might have over UCSB, and the thing with this is you're more likely to get a lower GPA at UCSD because of how competitive it is. I'm pre-dental currently going to UCSD, also got accepted to UCSB, but wish I went there. (This may be slightly biased as I have a strong dislike for UCSD since they did not accept my IGETC because I completed it in high school, and UCSD is the only UC that doesn't accept the IGETC from high school students) If you want a good idea of the schools vibe maybe check out the the reddits, one thing I gotta say is UCSD campus is suuuuuuuper nice IMO, but UCSB is really close to it due to its location.
@@stalemint624 Hi! I am actually really interested in UCSD and I just got my acceptance to Marshall but I also am expected to obtain my IGETC certification as a senior in high school. Your comment is extremely helpful because it is important to me that my IGETC credits do not go to waste. Did they take a look at each class that you took and give you some credits or did you have to take all of them all over again? Also, which college are you in? Any info would be appreciated
@@melissachea3298 Hey Melissa, super good question, I'm a freshman finishing up my lower div sequences (chem, Physics, Bio) because UCSD is not accepting the IGETC. The reason is not that I did not have it completely accepted but simply that UCSD is one of the only UC's which doesn't accept the IGETC for a high school student (which is crazy because it is much more difficult to complete it as a high school student than with 2 years in CC). I am at Muir, but from my understanding no UCSD college will accept the whole IGETC and all UCSD college will have a few more courses for you to take based on your college (everyone takes a DEI, a super easy essentially waste of time, and then usually 1-2 english class if your IGETC is accepted. I am transferring back to CC over this summer and then next year I will apply to a different UC to have my IGETC accepted because I'm not going to waste my time retaking the IGETC's here at UCSD when the school doesn't have anything to offer me at the time. I will be talking with the Dean soon to see if I can make some sort of exception because the situation is pretty ridiculous, but I would be careful in going to UCSD with an IGETC from high school. If you got accepted to for example UCI that is a great school and very similar students in that you have a more socially dead "social scene", and a really cool location (of course UCSD's is a little better), or if you got accepted to UCSB that is also a great school slightly lower in ranking academically to UCSD, but I have a few friends who went there a couple years ago and they liked it aside from housing situations. Good luck! (I suggest you just schedule a quick meeting with your counselor at your CC and make sure that you 100% confirm that it can be accepted) - one quick thing to note is if you did apply as a transfer through CC and not through high school to the UC's, and you were accepted this way the IGETC will count because technically you aren't a high school student in that case and your college status reigns above.
@@stalemint624 thank you!!! I’m choosing between UCSD and UCR so I really wanted UCSD but I definitely don’t want my credits to go to waste. Just to confirm, did you have to take all IGETC classes again or just the English and special writing classes? I will be talking to the admissions office this Saturday but I don’t want them to just tell me what I want to hear.
The qualifications may have changed but my mom moved to California and established residency after a year. Then you show that you are financially dependent on your parents and that qualifies you for in-state. I would definitely recommend asking the financial aid office though! Good luck!
To everyone who got into UCSD can you please tell me your stats and what you did for extracurricular🥺 Im an international student who really want to got to this school but I don’t know what to do..
hi! i was admitted to ucsd for the 2022-2023 school year & tbh i think my piqs saved my application rather than what i did but here's some of my stats and extracurriculars! - my grades were generally straight a's, maybe 1-2 b's throughout highschool and middle school (i skipped straight to algebra in 7th grade) - i was treasurer of a school club for 2 years - i've been taking dance classes since i was 3 years old (about 14 years in total) - i had a lot of community service hours (somewhere around 150 hours?) - i was in a LOT of clubs at my high school - i was on my high school's badminton team
My mom moved to California, and after a year of her living there I was able to qualify for in-state tuition! I'm not sure if the qualifications may have changed, but when I was there you had to show that your financial support came from California for at least 1 year.
@@ByteOfMichael hey. I’ve just been admitted to the sixth college for economics. I was wondering if the college I’m accepted to will impact the quality of education, or is it the same throughout all of UCSD colleges?
If we commute for class and don’t live on campus does the college still matter? Usually only if you live on campus right? Or does it only mean general education and writing classes since we are off campus? Which other UCs or schools are like UCSD where they split into different colleges but all have the same majors?
If you commute, the college you are in still matters because you still have to take that college’s general education requirements. For example, I was in ERC and you have to take 5 making of the modern world classes regardless of your major and whether you live on campus or not. If you did live on campus then you would live in ERC as well. Unfortunately, I’m not sure of any other UC that splits students up into colleges based on major, but I’d definitely suggest researching more if you are interested. Generally though, people in your major classes will have the same or similar majors to you!
I just got admitted into ERC as undeclared but I want to major in Computer science and engineering so can you give your advice on how can I choose my major in that, are there any special requirements for it if so, what's your opinion on giving it a shot.
Hello, idk if MiQL will see this but I gotcha, sadly I'm in the same boat as you and starting of last year and moving forward, we can't get a major in Computer Science and Engineering due to it being capped, it used to be a lottery system but they've changed it so we can't get it anymore, the only related major to it is Math-CS but you have to weigh in if you really want that cuz it's more math based than computer based
@@woomygamer642 I got into major: computer science and engineering with CO-OP at Drexel University and Computer Science major at UMichigan But I was more interested in UCSD for its research opportunities.
Hello! Any tips for an incoming transfer student for Math-CS during covid-19. I know that you previously recommended amenities, such as the tutors at UCSD, but with most instruction being remote, any tips on how to be successful both academically and socially, while dealing with limitations from the impact of covid-19? Thanks!
Ya of course! So most classes will still have discussions/sections over zoom, so you can always ask homework questions there. Additionally, many professors have their office hours over zoom too, which is super easy since you just have to go on the computer instead of walking to their office. I haven’t had a class with tutors since UCSD moved online so I’m not entirely sure how that’s handled, but I imagine it’s through some online portal (although in the fall, they may bring back physical tutor hours in the lab depending on the situation). Socially, it will definitely be a little bit harder, I’m sure that clubs and Greek life will still recruit but most likely online in some way, so definitely make sure to check out those! Also if you’re planning on living on campus at some point then the easiest way is to make friends with the people on your floor or in your building. Hopefully once everything becomes physical again, social life will get a lot easier. Hope this helps!
My daughter is going pre-med and turned down UCSD (for UCI) because of ERC. Other than the GE requirements that are most likely exhausting for pre-med majors, the fact that "Eleanor Roosevelt College does not have general education requirements to which all AP or IB scores can be applied" was another deal breaker for her.
I really liked my time at UCSD and there were many students going down the premed right. The main thing I suggest looking into is finances and making a decision that you won't regret financially later. Good luck!
It’s not that much harder, you can always look to join clubs/Greek life for a bigger circle. Most college students go to Pacific Beach like 15 mins south, where most of the bars are!
hello, great vid rlly love it, i’m gonna be a senior this year and i live in texas but i rlly wanna go to a UC school, how did u get the in state tuition after 2 years? and what would u recommend i should do to save the most money i can?
So my mom moved to California end of my freshman year and she was my 'financial support'. So by the end of my sophomore year I qualified for in-state tuition. You should def try to save the most money you can as student loans suck haha. Here is a good resource from the University of California about how to establish residency www.ucop.edu/residency/residency-requirements.html. I also suggest emailing a financial aid office because they can help you way more. Hope this helps!
Since there are a lot of sub colleges within UCSD, how do they pick which college I get to go to if everyone mainly ranks a certain college as first pick? All majors can be and will be in any sub college right? Are the GE/Writing requirements a lot different from each one? Like for example, everyone has to do English, math, etc right? Then how many classes differentiate one sub college from another?
I’m not sure what you mean by “sub-colleges”? At UCSD there are just the 7 colleges each with different general education requirements. If you are curious on what the general education requirements are for each college you can just google “UCSD [whatever college name] ge requirements”. When you apply to UCSD you have to rank the colleges based on which one you’d want to be in the most, then they assign people based on their rankings! Each college has a different focus, so for example ERC has a big focus on international studies so everyone in that college regardless of your major has to take a bunch of history, writing and language classes. Hope this helps!
MIQL I didn’t know what to call it since there’s the 7 colleges and then the Jacobs college of engineering etc, then is Jacobs college of engineering in which of the 7 colleges?
Jacobs school of engineering is not in any college (but it’s physically located in Warren college), it’s just a department, similar to how there is a math department, biology department, etc.. You don’t have to be in any specific college to be in the Jacobs school of engineering, it just depends on your major. For example if you were a Math-cs major you’d be in the math department (but you can still be in any college). Likewise for the Jacobs school of engineering, if you were electrical engineering, then your department would be the Jacobs school of engineering.
I got accept from UCSD communication major. Does any one share what UCSD communication major looks like? I cannot find a lot of information from internet. I also got accept from UCSB so I want to decide either SD or SB.
I have a question when you say out of state what do you mean by that, do we just have to go the San Diego before we apply and then we’re not out of state or something else cause I wanna get the cheapest option cause this is my dream college
Basically you have to be a resident of California to get in-state tuition. One way to become a resident is to have your financial support coming from California for at least 1 year. So I was able to qualify for in-state tuition after my mom had moved to California and lived there for a year (since she was my financial support). The process may have changed so I would reach out to the UCSD financial aid office for details!
Im an out of state student seriously considering UCSD, how am I able to make it more affordable through the school itself since outside scholarships are looking difficult to come across
Hey man, what was your GPA and how did your extracurriculars look? I got waitlisted and have always had the intent of going to SD but I’m panicking a bit now haha
@@shanealt5999 my gpa was 4.0 and like a 4.6 weighted, 4 varsity sports, I’ve worked at 3 different jobs but no clubs or nhs, still wasn’t good enough for my dream school Ucla:(
Ya out-of-state is really expensive. I would look into getting residency as soon as possible as that drastically drops the price and you become a lot more eligible for grants (if I remember correctly)
Hey there, I'm not totally sure on the process. I know you can switch colleges, but I don't know the specifics. I would check with the UCSD academic advising office for more info! Good luck!
I will transfer this fall to ERC CS and I hope i don't need to take any of those history classes since I have completed IGETC in community college. My homie got into 6th college for the same major as me so I was wondering if we'll be able to be in the same classes. Can you please shed some light on that? And is it hard to switch from 6th college to ERC or the other way?
You can definitely be in the same major classes, but for general education requirements, you'll usually just be in classes with people from your college. I know its possible to switch colleges, but I'm not sure on the process!
How would you rate the cs department. Are paid internships common or are they pretty difficult to get? Also what’s how is the employment prospects on graduation for cs students ? Do the big tech companies come to campus for hiring and where do graduates end up working.
My major was apart of the Mathematics department actually, but from what I saw the CS department seemed to be pretty good. Internships aren’t handed out, and you definitely have to try for them but big companies usually come during career fairs. I specifically remember when I was a student companies like Apple, Intel, Amazon, Appfolio, American Express, Yahoo, Western Digital and VMware came to campus. Hope this helps!
I literally cannot for the life of me, find the list of UCSD majors and the colleges that separate it? I found the general list of all UCSD majors, but, everyone says that UCSD is split into 6 colleges? So I’m trying to find what each college’s major are, like pretending I’m trying to see which majors are in revelle, what majors are in Roosevelt, etc, could you help? And what other colleges/UC or not UC, has a system like UCSD that splits the colleges? And where is the Jacobs school of engineering? Why is that not listed as a college? Or is that a sub college within one of the 7 colleges within UCSD in general? This is so confusing, could you explain in detail, in text? And why are there the 7 colleges but all have the same major? Im confused? So if pretending, youre a CS major and you got in Muir, then if someone else is CS Major in Revelle, are we taking the same CS classes at the same location? Or are we taking the same CS classes but at a different location? Im so confused, because like UCLA, if youre in pretending sociology major, it is in UCLA L&S, but if youre CS major youre in UCLA Engineering, so Im so confused in how people say UCSD has 7 colleges, but all have the same major? Are we all taking the same major classes at the same classroom or different classroom based on what college we were accepted into?
You will take the same classes in the same locations (unless you have different professors) as other people in your major. The only thing the UCSD college system does is separate people based on general education requirements and has nothing to do with your major. So if there are 2 CS majors, one in Muir and one in reveille, they’ll both take CSE 11:introduction to java in the same place but they will have to take different GEs. You can look up the different college general education requirements to get a sense of what each college requires, but all you have to remember is that whatever college you are in doesn’t really impact the classes, people or locations of your major.

Ya sure, so the majors aren’t divided between the colleges, any major can be in any college. The 7 college system only determines what general education requirements you take and where you live. So, if you’re a math major for example and you were in ERC, there will also be math majors that aren’t in ERC. Additionally, the Jacobs school of engineering is a “school” rather than a college. Same thing with the rady school of management and the school of medicine. These schools aren’t really influenced by the college system. They are basically just departments. The big thing is that whichever college you are in, you will find all different types of majors, but you will all be taking the same general education requirements. Hope this helps!

I think you’ll probably have to apply to mechanical engineering. Since it’s a capped major, they’ll likely look at your grades, then put you in a lottery system to be allowed into the major. I’m not totally sure though, so I’d reach out to UCSD academic advising about the specifics. Good luck!
@@ByteOfMichael Okay thank you I appreciate it.
I’m in the process of researching Uni’s and by far, appreciate this explanation, how many years did it take for you to graduate?
Good luck! And it took me 4 years for my major and minor!
The engineering department was ranked #9 recently! Not that stats mean everything but that's p cool
I know! It’s pretty awesome!
We have an important decision to make. We are from east coast, and my daughter got accepted at UCSD comp sci. and is debating the credentials with Northeastern univ which has great coop program. Can you please suggest if UCSD has any coop opportunities? Or feedback on career services once you graduated? Thanks in advance.
UCSD does have a career center that hosts events! Regarding coop, I'm not sure but I would suggest reaching out to the university. Good luck!
Any fellow first year incoming transfers from ERC? Lol
mike, what do you mean with price (if you're out of state)? i'm planning to go to ucsd and im trying to get all the info possible.
Hi Miql,
Trying to decide whether to attend UCSD or UCLA next fall as an engineering major.
Would I have the opportunity to surf or is engineering too time consuming?
It'll depend on how hard classes are for you, but you'll likely have time to go surfing (maybe just not everyday haha)
@@ByteOfMichael have you met an unhappy surfer at UCSD?
Thanks ! The information you provided is very helpful. I agree that oos tuition is quite Expensive.
Can you please let me know how you got in state tuition at UCSD.
Thanks for the kind words! I got in state tuition because my mom moved to California. After she lived there for 1 full year I was able to qualify!

Got any advice for the best colleges for an incoming Chemistry major who finished all of the GE requirements done from community college?
How do you become instate ? I been in California since 2020 but I am still out of state? What can I do ? Thank you :)
The qualifications may have changed but my mom moved to California and established residency after a year. Then you show that you are financially dependent on your parents and that qualifies you for in-state. I would definitely recommend asking the financial aid office though! Good luck!

hi! i was admitted to ucsd for the 2022-2023 school year & tbh i think my piqs saved my application rather than what i did but here's some of my stats and extracurriculars!
- my grades were generally straight a's, maybe 1-2 b's throughout highschool and middle school (i skipped straight to algebra in 7th grade)
- i was treasurer of a school club for 2 years
- i've been taking dance classes since i was 3 years old (about 14 years in total)
- i had a lot of community service hours (somewhere around 150 hours?)
- i was in a LOT of clubs at my high school
- i was on my high school's badminton team
Is it worth attending if you’re not admitted for CS first time around?
in state maybe... otherwise no. cs is a lottery
I am a student of electrical engineering in Mexico, I am a permanent resident of the United States, what do I need for a loan for a master's degree?
Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with that. I would reach out to the UCSD financial aid office for advice!
How did you score an instate tuition? Just wondering because im in a similar situation as you
My mom moved to California, and after a year of her living there I was able to qualify for in-state tuition! I'm not sure if the qualifications may have changed, but when I was there you had to show that your financial support came from California for at least 1 year.
Are all of the separate colleges located on the same campus? I’m a little confused lol
Yep they’re all on the same campus, it’s just a very big campus haha. They each have their own little zone/region
@@ByteOfMichael hey. I’ve just been admitted to the sixth college for economics. I was wondering if the college I’m accepted to will impact the quality of education, or is it the same throughout all of UCSD colleges?
@@weiyumama8990 nah sixth is great and the best location

Aisha Perwez same! I visited the campus last week and it’s pretty big (ERC).
What was ERC like? I just got accepted
I loved ERC! Though I know some people complained about some of the GEs (specifically MMW), but I never thought they were too bad!
I dont like it, MMW courses are going to make you terrible
My daughter is going pre-med and turned down UCSD (for UCI) because of ERC. Other than the GE requirements that are most likely exhausting for pre-med majors, the fact that "Eleanor Roosevelt College does not have general education requirements to which all AP or IB scores can be applied" was another deal breaker for her.
Hi, Michael! Do you recommend UCSD for a mexican who wants to do a master degree and get involved into medical industry?
I really liked my time at UCSD and there were many students going down the premed right. The main thing I suggest looking into is finances and making a decision that you won't regret financially later. Good luck!
once you get accepted to UCSD, can you change your college?
I believe you can but I’m not sure on the specifics. I’d reach out to UCSD academic advising for more information!
Quart system?
Is the social scene really that bad?
It’s not that bad, you may just have to try a bit harder
@@ByteOfMichael how hard is a bit harder for an outward going person? Are there any bars/clubs that are nearby ?
MIQL yo thank you so much, i will definitely do those things thank you it means a lot
@@ByteOfMichael I got accepted into Roosevelt so can I go for Jacobs school of engineering?
@@metamorphic2600 Yep! Your college doesn't really affect what major you can go into

Basically you have to be a resident of California to get in-state tuition. One way to become a resident is to have your financial support coming from California for at least 1 year.
