    UC acceptances are literally the most random things ever. I got into UC Berkeley but got rejected from UCLA and waitlisted at UCSD...

      Natalie Bastawros I want to get into Cal, or Ucla, or Uci any advice (im only a high school sophomore)

    • @NatalieBastawros
      @NatalieBastawros 8 лет назад +238

      +Michelle Nguyen Well there's the obvious stuff like taking AP classes and shooting for all A's (or at least mostly A's), which is definitely very important. But getting a B won't kill you. I got a B in AP Bio and still got into Cal, so it's not the end of the world :). I would say though that you should get really involved in things that you actually care about/have passion for, and aim to get leadership in those areas. I loved worship and music, so I joined the school's worship team freshmen year and was the leader of it by senior year. It's better to have deep involvement in a few things than barely any involvement in a ton of stuff. And it's always helpful to have some rewards or recognitions that set you apart. Lastly, the essay is KEY in my opinion. Make it about you, but intriguing and well written

    • @NatalieBastawros
      @NatalieBastawros 8 лет назад +191

      +Michelle Nguyen However, my most important piece of advise would be to not get your heart set on one school. UCLA was my dream for years and years- and it was the only school I got rejected from. But now that I'm at UCSB, I can tell that this is exactly where I needed to be. There's no magic formula on how to get in to any school, but try your best and fall in love with wherever you end up. Best of luck to you!!!

    "UCSD students are UCLA rejects"
    Ahah :(
    I'm going to UCSD because I was rejected to UCLA
    Update: YOOOOO I JUST GOT A NOTIFICATION THAT SOMEONE REPLIED TO THIS. I HAD TOTALLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THIS COMMENT... IT HAS NOW BEEN 2 YRS WTF
    I am actually super happy at UCSD and am grateful that I came here. I have great friends, I am in a project team, have had my fair share of partying. PRE COVID, I used to see the most beautiful sunsets as I walked back to my dorm from class.
    I now laugh at my own saltiness and sadness from 2 years ago. I came to UCSD for an engineering degree and it's not easy at all, but it's cool that I'm in a top 10 Engineering school...
    Just know that you'll find your place and even though it's cliche AS HELL, a school doesn't define you.

      @Akhil Rain yeah I got a friend who graduated from UCSD in biochemistry way back when. Making a pretty good living now. As for my other friend in question, I believe she's a Humanities major and I know UCSD ain't much known for that.

    • @whosaidthat84

      @Akhil Rain that's true, but as you said earlier in comparison to Cal or UCLA they don't quite have the same reputation. Either way, all three schools are good, as are most of the UC's, so you really can't go wrong.

  • @marywilder84

    I'm attending UCR this fall and I want to defeat the stereotype that all students there are UC Rejects. I was accepted to UCLA, UCSD, and UCI and actually preferred UCR because of the location, the financial aid, the size of the campus, and UCR just felt like home. The other schools were just not ideal and I'm glad I focused on what I was most comfortable with rather than prestige.
    Update: I graduated this past March from UCR with a bachelors in psychology, completely debt free. I made great connections and wonderful friends through student orgs and took advantage of the many opportunities that UCR had to offer. I truly had an amazing time at UCR. It’s sad to see that my time there is over now but I’ll always be grateful for the experience.

    • @marywilder84
      @marywilder84 8 лет назад +253

      Pudnite You can get connections at any school, you just have to go out and put in the effort to make meaningful connections. My sister attended UCR as well and the connections she made are still helping her 10 years later.

    • @Pudnite
      @Pudnite 8 лет назад +35

      marywilder84 Of course, like they said, it's what you put into it to get what what you want out of it. Nothing will be handed to you just because you go to a more prestigious school, but it does make things a little more easy.

I know plenty of alumni from my high school who chose UCR over UCLA, UCB, and USC. They're all doing great now and have little to no debt.

Men's basketball has qualified for "March Madness" a couple of times. Many Professional and Olympic athletes train and work out at UCI. RIP to John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli. I went to both UCLA and UCSD. I guess I can't speak for all of UCSD since I'm currently doing a master's here and grad school is way different. But, I will say without question that UCLA is much more social and lively. You can get anything you want in Westwood then most of my best friends came from my dorm first year, where pretty much everyone lives freshman year. I think one needs to consider choosing universities based on the culture that fits them. If you want to do things in San Diego, you'll need a car. In LA I didn't have a car, but it wasn't needed because everything you need is right there.

    You need to find a college that fits you personality wise and academically. I knew that I would prefer to stay near the ocean and that a larger school with a strong engineering department was for me. The choice came to UCSD or SDSU. I toured both and went to both admitted students days but ended up choosing SDSU because I connected with the people there better. A friend of mine in a similar predicament chose UCSD because it's more prestigious and has come to the conclusion that it is not the right fit. Don't let the prestige of a school make the decision for you. Anyways Ima hop off my soapbox.

    • @ClassyJohn
      @ClassyJohn 5 лет назад +27

      To add to your point, you can tell a lot about a school based on how their admissions office representatives talk to you. I believe I called into UCSD's office just to ask some simple questions and the female representative had a very condescending attitude as if I should've known the answer to these questions. I mean you're literally paid to help the students but if you're going be a bitch about it, then good luck in life.

    I remember watching this during application season and want to say fuck prestige. Even though rankings have definitely changed, choose the school that makes you feel welcomed, is financially feasible, fits your vibe and is a place where you can actually thrive!
    Fortunately, I was accepted into all the UCs I applied to and the hardest part was choosing where to go. UCLA was obviously my first choice and I was hella bummed out I couldn’t go because it was too expensive (I didn’t get any financial aid lmao) But reflecting back on my lil emo phase, the only legit reason I wanted to attend UCLA so badly was because I felt it would impress others and validate all my hard work.
    I just finished my 1st quarter at UCI and I’m honestly so happy!! Good bio program, hella dance teams, hypebeast/rave culture and genuinely surprised with the social/greek life here.
    So, whether you receive an acceptance or rejection, you honestly are meant to be where you end up!! Don’t base your hopes/decisions solely on prestige unless you have a legitimate reason to attend a certain UC. Good luck to everyone applying!

    • @011cra
      @011cra 9 лет назад +1

      luckygreenstar22 I think he was talking to those going to med school only. Aka, they aren't looking for jobs straight out of college, rather they are looking for the absolute highest GPA possible. That is SO much harder at top schools like UCLA because all classes are on curves. AKA you will be competing for grades with students who were straight A's in High school which is HARD!

    • @JYLEDH
      @JYLEDH 9 лет назад +2

      ***** I guess easy A relative to my school which is Berkeley. My friend goes to UCSB. His tests are so easy that I don't get how people find it hard. • @JYLEDH
      @JYLEDH 9 лет назад +1

      The test I was referring to was in ochem actually. Mechanism and Synthesis problems were so basic. I don't get whats harsh about 15-20% of class getting As. The more people that gets an A, the less your grade means something.
      If you initially went to Berkeley and got used to the workload, you would think differently. You probably got used to the easier work load. Any reputable University is obviously going to be harder than High School which was a joke.

    • @JYLEDH
      @JYLEDH 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I already graduated from Berkeley. Im not really bitter. Who said I couldn't handle the courseload lol. I worked twice as hard as my friend but I also learned a lot more. I was just giving my advice to people going to professional school since they will not need that extra knowledge anyways and might be wasting their time. I don't get why you are getting so defensive lol. No where did I mention I was smarter than everyone else.
      That was just one example. I tutored him for 4 years. He is a close friend of mine and I know the grades he received in his classes. Sure there were classes that were on par with Berkeley classes but the curves were so generous lol.

I also have friends who went to UCI, UCR, and UCLA. So I concur what you guys said about them.

    I was already married and my wife's biz is located in L.A. so when I decided to apply to grad school, I chose UCLA despite Cal also having a master's and doctoral program in my field (didn't give USC a thought due to its exorbitant tuition and parking costs, despite my daughter now representing 6 USC alums in my family). All UCs are excellent schools and they each offer a different college experience. It's always best to choose the school that excels in your area of study - it likely has some leaders in the field who can help facilitate professional networking for you for research opportunities and academic positions. Lastly, my wife is a UCI Anteater. :-)

    Really funny and on-point summary. A friend of mine that did NOT get into Stanford went to USCD and then to Hershey for med school - the irony is thick. My friends that went to Irvine said it was Under Construction Indefinitely. Backronyms are volatile..
    The emphasis that UC's expect you to fend for yourselves was well represented - my sons are very clear that when I was at Cal, waiting in line (which they know I hate) was part of the public school ritual. I think they get the bigger picture that represents, but we're edging in on the decision time.
    I hope my oldest decides Cal is for him, but I will suck it up and live with it if he picks Stanford. My younger boy is so clearly a Cal man, even in 7th grade, it's just not an issue.
    Again, great video, really good enumeration of a lot of complicated social issues. Nerds, gotta love them!

    Lol I go to Cal (UC Berkeley) and all of these stereotypes are actually pretty true. There are definitely some weirdos here, and going to Berkeley only makes you more weird. Students (a lot, but not all) get so caught up in studying that they don't care for conventional socializing or what's socially acceptable anymore; that, and some of them are just weird before they get here. Yes, there are a shit ton of asians; most are nerds, but a surprising amount of them are closet nerds that are very "americanized" and are big on dat greek life. If there's one thing that I can objectively say, it's that UC Berkeley lives up to its academic reputation: midterm and finals weeks are absolutely brutal. The good thing about graduating from such a prestigious university, however, is that the name does give you an edge. My buddy just got a contracted position at Amazon, with no work experience and a sub-par resume, because he went to Cal (he only has a Bachelor's)

But the fact that it isn't a sought after UC means you WILL have opportunities for more scholarships, undergrad research, and quality time with professors.
    I just transfered to UCI for a graduate program, and the best thing so far is the graduate housing offers UCI has. The best deals you can get for student housing anywhere, well below market (unless you get stuck in that brand new building, then it's closer to market but still a decent deal).
