I feel like there’s one thing to realized from this, rhinos seem to be perfectly evolved to counter hippos. I know that’s probably not the case but think about it, it has touch skin and a horn to prevent bites from the hippo. Because even if it managed to get the rhino’s head in it’s mouth that horn will stop it from biting down, aswell as the strange head geometry of the rhino. It’s head is very strange, it’s body is bulky and tall. And it’s pretty damn fast so they hit like a truck.

People that keep on insisting that these two were "fighting" need to rub the crap from their eyes. This was clearly a friendly exploratory encounter. There's more to animals than just mindless fighting and killing.
The whole interaction lasted over 45 minutes and possibly an hour or more. We lost track of time. It is edited down to about 14 minutes spread across part 1 and part 2. My camera batteries were low and another camera ran out of space on the card. So, yes, it goes quickly from day light to night because there wasn't much video to work with at that point.
***** I'm not certain on the gender of the hippos. I've googled hippo anatomy and it is difficult to tell with all their flabbiness. If you're certain, that's great. Hopefully within the next year the video will be shown on a Nat Geo Wild show where an expert can comment on their gender.

That was one of the coolest nature vids i've ever seen. Thanks for posting it. The way they gently placed their respective 'weapons' in or near each others mouths reminded me of seeing chimps place their hands and even heads in each others mouths as a way of showing trust. This was such a strange encounter and the gentleness of it was outstanding. That hippo could have been gored through the throat a hundred times yet it never even scratched him. So cool!

Look at how gentle they both are , for instance the rhino with placing his horn on the side rather than in the middle, same with the hippo not biting down hard at all, they both know they these things are used to defend.

Rhinos and hippos may be largely vegetarian, but they are still two of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Hippos are responsible for the most deaths, probably because they stand on the bottom of rivers and lakes and people get too close to them with boats and surprise them.

This is a relatively even matchup. Hippos have a slightly higher health pool but rhinos have a higher armor rating by a decent margin. And since they're both tanky builds, which focus on area denial, it really depends on circumstances. In this case, the rhino and hippo were both in the mid-late game, which gave the rhino the advantage, since the later the game for them, the higher damage their primary weapon deals. Just lucky neither of them were really out to kill each other, otherwise the bleed effect dealt could've killed them both.
It got dark and they were all still lingering around the pond. We headed back to the camp since we couldn't see much, were tired, and we'd already been out for several hours. Reports are all three animals are still very much alive at the preserve, so that's why this video is called "Date Night" rather than "Rhino - Hippo Big Battle" or something similar. They seem to be quite familiar with each other.

Our pastor introduced his topic by talking about rhinos and how they can only see about 16 feet ahead of them and a group of rhinos being called a "crash". No wonder the rhino couldn't see us in the vehicle. He had no crash on the preserve to hang out with so had to take up with the hippos.

That is fascinating. From watching hippos quarreling inside their group you can tell this hippo is exerting restrain with the rhino, they're both respectful and recognize each other's weapon(s). I wonder if they can tell from smell that the other is also an herbivore, i think so. This shows how intelligent the hippo is capable of controlling his aggressiveness in this situation. When he turns backward and sit, that is typical hippo behavior for saying, i'm not showing you any respect, you're not my superior. The rhino does not seem quite as intelligent as the hippo, which could be explained by not having any predator to outwit. At the end the hippo seems to realize the rhino is slow minded and isn't that playful, he has learned well about the rhino's horn. I think nature is helping this "friendship" as both have to fear of the other given equal sizes, they use courtesy :)

Not a fight, more like a confrontation, a show of strenght that could become a fight (and potentially lethal) as the slight mistake. I think the Hippo would lose. It clearly had no idea on how to bite the rhino without getting stabbed in the mouth.

Rhino would beat a hippo hands down. Hippos are extremrly tough but that powerful horn that the Rhino has plus armor plated. Rhino uses its big horn on the Hippo' s oily skin and it's all over!

It's amazing how evolution works. Hippo is unable to bite rhino's head because it would commit a suicide because of the rhino nose-horn.
God gave both of them the tools to stay alive while around the other. Both went on to live another day.

It got dark and we went back to the lodge. Both animals survived another day. The rhino was eventually sold to another preserve.
Rhino would beat a hippo hands down. Hippos are extremrly tough but that powerful horn that the Rhino has plus armor plated. Rhino uses its big horn on the Hippo' s oily skin and it's all over!
