I feel like there’s one thing to realized from this, rhinos seem to be perfectly evolved to counter hippos. I know that’s probably not the case but think about it, it has touch skin and a horn to prevent bites from the hippo. Because even if it managed to get the rhino’s head in it’s mouth that horn will stop it from biting down, aswell as the strange head geometry of the rhino. It’s head is very strange, it’s body is bulky and tall. And it’s pretty damn fast so they hit like a truck.

The whole interaction lasted over 45 minutes and possibly an hour or more. We lost track of time. It is edited down to about 14 minutes spread across part 1 and part 2. My camera batteries were low and another camera ran out of space on the card. So, yes, it goes quickly from day light to night because there wasn't much video to work with at that point.

That was one of the coolest nature vids i've ever seen. Thanks for posting it. The way they gently placed their respective 'weapons' in or near each others mouths reminded me of seeing chimps place their hands and even heads in each others mouths as a way of showing trust. This was such a strange encounter and the gentleness of it was outstanding. That hippo could have been gored through the throat a hundred times yet it never even scratched him. So cool!

This is a relatively even matchup. Hippos have a slightly higher health pool but rhinos have a higher armor rating by a decent margin. And since they're both tanky builds, which focus on area denial, it really depends on circumstances. In this case, the rhino and hippo were both in the mid-late game, which gave the rhino the advantage, since the later the game for them, the higher damage their primary weapon deals. Just lucky neither of them were really out to kill each other, otherwise the bleed effect dealt could've killed them both.

It got dark and they were all still lingering around the pond. We headed back to the camp since we couldn't see much, were tired, and we'd already been out for several hours. I agree! We were thinking a fight could break out at any time, but I'm glad they all lived to see another day. We kept wanting to save our batteries and SD card space in case that happened.

rhino horns are very pointed and dangerous, hippos can be seriously injured if hit

That is fascinating. From watching hippos quarreling inside their group you can tell this hippo is exerting restrain with the rhino, they're both respectful and recognize each other's weapon(s). I wonder if they can tell from smell that the other is also an herbivore, i think so. This shows how intelligent the hippo is capable of controlling his aggressiveness in this situation. When he turns backward and sit, that is typical hippo behavior for saying, i'm not showing you any respect, you're not my superior. The rhino does not seem quite as intelligent as the hippo, which could be explained by not having any predator to outwit. At the end the hippo seems to realize the rhino is slow minded and isn't that playful, he has learned well about the rhino's horn. I think nature is helping this "friendship" as both have to fear of the other given equal sizes, they use courtesy :)

Pretty bizarre. I wonder what would have happened if they were really intensely going at it. Because that hippo practically offered its neck a number of times to the Rhino, where the Rhino could have just impaled him.

Both made it through the night. We left when it got dark. The (lone) rhino was sold to another preserve with female rhinos for him. Hopefully there are baby rhinos on the way by now.

Not a fight, more like a confrontation, a show of strenght that could become a fight (and potentially lethal) as the slight mistake.
I think the Hippo would lose. It clearly had no idea on how to bite the rhino without getting stabbed in the mouth.

The rhino head is built for battle, the tusks could only tear the skin. So as long as the rhino keeps his head to the hippo its fine.

I don't think so. The other rhinos at this preserve were poached, so I think he is the lone rhino. He seems to just be looking for someone else his own size and shade of grey.

Rhino would beat a hippo hands down. Hippos are extremrly tough but that powerful horn that the Rhino has plus armor plated. Rhino uses its big horn on the Hippo' s oily skin and it's all over!
