- A viewer described this as "Desperate Rhino, Annoyed Hippo". That sums it up! There's kissing(1:05), horn prodding(6:15), tusk displays (5:00), gentle biting(8:10), back rubs(5:30), rolling around(3:35), pushing & shoving(8:30), and even mounting(8:40) during their face off encounter that lasted over 40 minutes.

No. Horses and donkeys are members of the same family, whereas rhinos and hippos are completely different species. They don't have anything in common other than being mammals. They literally have as much in common with each other as they do with humans.

One could imagine this scene happening a million years ago. Two almost ancient-looking creatures that I'm sure haven't changed much over that time!
Thanks for sharing this extremely rare footage. It's hard to find videos where hippos and rhinos interact let alone interaction of this sort. If they do appear together, they are mostly in stand-offs and trying to scare off each other. This video shows they can co-exist peacefully. Wow.

Unbeliveable. Two heavyweights cuddling each other at the end of video. Simply amazing scenes considering that hippos are very territorial animals which do not allow any intruder to enter their domain. They are evenly matched - that is only explanation why serious fight did not start. Beside they also know they present no threat to each other. Similar "harmony" exists between hippos and crocodiles as long as crocodiles do not try to do any harm to baby hippos. In that case hippos turn to aggressive mode and drive crocs away. If not submissive crocs are risking life since hippo is capable of bitting croc in half. I have watched many animal videos but this one is very odd and in the same time very touching. Interspecies relationships are always interesting to watch - they show all beauty of raw nature which is in peril due to us humans. If this video had been recorded in zoo I would not have been surprised. But in the wild seeing this is really awesome. I like all animals, particularly large herbivores - elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes and buffalos. They are pieceful creatures who watch their own business. But if threatened they become deadly displaying immense strength and hippos are notorious for behaving in this manner - they are responsible for more human fatalities than any other animal in Africa. But this video shows their gentle side. Nature is simple breathtaking.

Notice that the hippo kept turning around, lying prone, rolling over in between displays of aggressive behavior like mouth gaping. Its clear that the hippo was communicating that it was submitting to the rhino, but also trying to get it to back off. That hippo was smart -- he knew he couldn't take the rhino!

I disagree with you on the part where humans don’t have relationships with other animals, dogs, cats, any farm animal...I’d say we never formed relationships with a hippo because they tend to kill more humans than crocs and are extremely territorial. You must keep in mind how extremely rare this moment is. Other than that I agree.
I am not surprised! Stranger things have happened. I am only too happy to see them being so loving and playful, they could have done the opposite and tried to kill each other which would have been very sad and tragic for not only animals but humans too. Love This Vid❤️️💯😍

Who'll admit they always thought these great animals were related? They are, in the sense that all mammals are, but rhinos are closer to horses and hippos are closer to pigs. This is very sweet. Thank you!

If actions do indeed speak louder than words I'd say that the hippo was just getting increasingly frustrated that her rhino counterpart was a little too hesitant to make the *RIGHT* move even after assuming her position. So we could assume that he's probably not too well experienced in making love to a hippo. Or just plain dumb.

It was the only time we saw hippos out of the water. They normally stay out of the sun all day due to sensitive skin and only stick their heads out of the pond.

If they could produce offspring it would be the scariest Mammal on the planet. Horns on head, mouth full of giant fangs, armor like skin, can run fast, webbed feet to swim fast. It would be one of the only herbivore animals that would double as a predator.

Not all. A lot of them are territorial and will attack the vehicle if too close. Some actually do charge at vehicles to warn them, just not hit it.
