Despite being outnumbered and facing formidable opponents, she stands her ground, using her massive size and formidable horn to protect her offspring.
Meanwhile, the young rhino calf, although smaller and less experienced, shows remarkable determination as it charges towards the lions, ready to defend itself alongside its mother. This display of courage from both mother and calf highlights the resilience and strength inherent in these magnificent creatures.
Such encounters remind us of the harsh realities of the animal kingdom, where survival often depends on the ability to fend off threats from predators. It’s a testament to the bond between mother and offspring and the instinctual drive to protect and ensure the survival of the next generation.
Such an absolute privilege to have witnessed this once in a lifetime sighting, and phenomenal capture 😮
Truly spectacular an experience that will surely live a lifetime 🙏
Congrats Guys 🎉
My friend, I wish you could’ve done the write up for our description of this video. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and apt description of the events which unfolded. As you mentioned, we were really blessed to be able to experience something as dramatic as this was and certainly as you mentioned, nature at its most brutal. The highlight of this for Kerry and I was being involved in the intervention; to be able to be so close to the young calf was special and even though our involvement was minimal it will be an event which will certainly stick with us for life.
Wel i see a mother who isnt doing much to protect her young..wich is strange bcs normaly the lions would'nt come close knowing momma wil kill them.
In this case, when we darted the mother. It was found she was carrying an infection which is why her response to the lions was so subdued.

Ok she was very sick
I believe in this instance, because the Rhino is an endangered species, human intervention to save the baby is the right thing to do here. Just my observation.
Fully agree with your sentiment. Us as humans have been the cause of their endangered status and for the serious decline in numbers and therefore where we can, we should intervene and assist. The intervention took place two days after the event and therefore the lions were not negatively impacted. It’s a win win situation in my opinion 💪
They will make video
I concur entirely
nature (humans) helping nature (rhinos). I don't see the conflict what so ever. Now maybe that changes if that was the only meat for the last few lions.
Yes I think the same way
To the people who stepped in to help the baby rhino and the mom - you just gave me hope for humanity!!!! Thank goodness for good people - may you outlive the sun in greatest of health and merriment having boundless if resources to continue to do good 👍🏽
Thank you for your kind words 😄. The scientific team and the research team as well as the vet deserve all the credit for their actions. We humans have had such a negative impact on the overall Rhino population that a small win like this is massive and certainly the right thing to do 😄
Amazing footage! That little one is a brave one indeed.

This baby is a brave and intelligent one. Mom also very cool in this situation without panicking. Thank you , human interaction was necessary to save this precious Rhino baby.
Agreed, its incredible to watch something so small, bravely take on these lions 🙌 It certainly saved his life and bought him enough time for the zebras to come on to the scene to distract the lionesses.
At that age, baby doesn’t realise the danger
Oh was watching this video on edge praying that the baby rhino would be ok and hoped that mobile unit would intervene..can breath sigh of relief now..Many thanks all involved who did help mother and baby rhino..every rhino counts out-there.💝💖👏👏👏
We are so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching. On a personal note, and as I’m sure you felt as well, it was an extremely emotional event. The work of the scientific team and the vet and his understudies was remarkable. In all about 30 people were involved in various ways and it was such a positive outcome for such a deserving young calf.
Not too many rhinos left, that’s why!!!
🌈🌈🌈That is a white rhino. The last time I checked, the black rhino is extinct in the wild except probably in captivity. Black rhinos are more aggressive. 🌈🌈🌈
It's wonderful that finally saved the little Hero ❤❤
Fully agree, he really was a hero 😄🏅
Faster recovery baby❤❤ I loves much this mystery creature 😊😊
I'm surprised the mother rhino was not more aggressive towards the lions
Unfortunately we only found out during the intervention that she was carrying an intervention from birthing the calf. This is what made her response lethargic. Whilst watching this incident I too was equally as confused by her lack of response but it made sense afterwards.

Its really needed to intervene in case of species which are near to extinct. Babies and mothers in all cases should be protected. Its the duty and responsiblity of forest officers and department. If there is no law there is a need to make such law
Hence the intervention which took place. Had this not been a critically endangered animal (caused by humans and specifically poaching) we would’ve let nature take its course.

mother has poor eyesight and was sick. normally she'd chase those lions away.

Thank you. We need to protect these creatures. Stop nature @ this point. eleven fifty-five
Mama was aware of the eminent danger facing her and her calf. She kept cool and calm as not cause a scene and initiate an emotional fight, which would most likely give the huge pride a higher hand. Her invisible worry was with her child.
honestly speaking, the mother apppears to be sick, a truly health rinho is super protective and not easy to mess with even the lions know it, but somehow they can sense the mother is isn't showing much interest
You are 100% correct. The mother was found to be carrying an infection from birthing the calf when we did the intervention. She was treated as well.
Right to live. Best support for the wildlife.

Great video. Mother rhino staying very calm. Why the intervention of guards on the mother rhino in the end, what for?
Thank you. Great question, unfortunately she was carrying an infection which made her response to the Lions very lethargic. This was from birthing the calf. The decision was made to give her a cocktail of meds whilst the Calf was treated just to help her regain her strength faster to ultimately be able to protect the calf.
@@KrugerGoneWildyes, I was a little confused as to the mother Rhino's lack of response to the obvious threat of lions all around. Your explanation definitely clears it up. Having any type of infection can definitely make an animal not as responsive. Glad they both got medical attention.
When it comes to rhinos
It is necessary help them in certain situations
@@davidsantossilvadavid6706agree 💯
@@KrugerGoneWildThanks for the explanation. I too was a bit puzzled as to why the mother was not reacting.
Lions show the meaning of patience. “Oh, we’ll just lie down for a bit. While Rhino Mum seems more interested in gorging herself than stopping us dining on her baby…”
Haha, ya these lions definitely made a meal of this situation. They had the upper hand and fortunately they were then distracted by a harem of Zebra.
The lion pride is not that hungry. The male is relaxing, the females are testing waters.
Without human intervention that little guy wouldnt survive long.....
Fully agreed. It’s a tough decision always with wildlife. I’m a firm believer of letting nature take its course however in the case of Rhino’s human intervention is necessary.
Have to admire the boldness of those lions, that rhino would destroy them with one swift swipe of the horn.
@lordbottaro5449. What's bold when NONE of the lions tried to distract the mother given how much of them there was ? what's bold when an adult lioness showed fear or a tiny calf ? look at the distance sometimes between calf & mother & yet they failed, those coward clumsy lions all put together don't even have the brain power of that lil rhino calf.😂
Are you for real? A lumbering Rhino couldn't defend this calf against a pride of lions in a hundred years. They would simply wear the calf down over a few hours. It was only human intervention that saved it.

The scientific team and vet did intervene and assess and give appropriate care and meds to both the Mom and Calf. It was found on assessment during the intervention that the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf and this was treated as well.
@@KrugerGoneWild Thank you so much to kind-hearted scientific team and the veterinarians who helped this poor little family!!!🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much❤. I wish you always interfere, to save babies of all kind of animals. And cure ill animals to avoid long tough death
I was wondering why mom was not reacting at all. From the comments I found out that she was sick. So baby had to defend himself on his own. …
100%. It was certainly an intriguing sighting. Regardless of the health of the mother, in reality, if the lions have the desire and the persistence, they could’ve worn her out in good or bad health. What’s amazing about this Pride is that it’s certainly a learnt and specialized behavior. We’ve seen it a number of times where the sub adults (they have almost reached adulthood in this video) have taunted and teased full grown rhino’s with zero chance of success whilst that male (who’s quite young himself) and his mother watches on. It’s a behavior which has started to pay off in circumstances like the above where mothers are isolated with new born calves. Fortunately in this case, a harem of zebra came from over the rise and the mother lioness turned her attention towards them instead. Had these lioness’s been fully grown I have no doubt that this calf wouldn’t have made it that day. It’s the lack of experience of the young lionesses and the unwillingness of the mother to potentially injure herself that most likely caused them to divert there attention. This allowed the Rhino’s enough time to move off. Ultimately though, the mother being sick certainly had a huge impact on this particular case.
@@KrugerGoneWild Wow! You are awesome. 💯👍
Amazing vide ❤
Thank you my brother 🙏🏅
That mother seemed incredibly calm considering there were so many lions around her and the baby, it's like she hadn't really bonded with it. I hope the park rangers will keep a close eye on their future bearing in mind the decline of the rhino.
So unfortunately it was found during the intervention that the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf. Both the mother and calf were treated accordingly and in the days that followed the scientific team did indeed keep track of their progress to make sure all was fine.
Молодцы ребята ,
Looks like it was a training lesson for the young cubs. Adult lion was not to active in the take down, maybe being cautious also. The Mother Rhino was calm and was saving her energy for when it was really needed. Lucky the assistance was there to protect the Baby Rhino, usually that is not the case. Most rangers do not like to intervene because they are in the wild and usually anything goes. Mother rhino was not to quick to defend the baby. Some animals are close to extinction, maybe that was the reason rangers assisted. Baby Rhino lived to see another day....let us all wish a long life for Momma and baby.
You are spot on in your observation regarding the mother of the sub adult females (I use the term sub adult loosely as they were around 2 at the time) and their 4 year old male older brother. However, what saved this rhino was a series of fortunate events where a harem of zebra came over a rise and distracted the lions for long enough for the mother rhino and her calf to move out of the area. Certainly, the decision was made by the scientific team to intervene due to the endangered status of rhino’s due to Rhino poaching. It was during this intervention that it was realized the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response was so lethargic. Really appreciate your comment and input. Thank you 🙏

Just sent through my last comment right before your intervention. In a way glad to see but didn’t think this was condoned behaviour by wildlife park staff. Happy to see both baby and mother get a second chance and the lions should look for some other prey I hope 👍
Thank you so much for taking time to watch the entire video and your comments are certainly appreciated. I agree with you fully, I also believe that we let nature takes it course and that we don’t intervene unless the animal has been impacted through human element. However, due to the critically endangered status of Rhino’s, interventions in cases like this do occur and these decisions are made by the scientific team. The intervention took place two days after this incident so the lions weren’t impacted at all. Upon darting the mother, on assessment it was realized that she was actually carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response to the lions looked extremely lethargic. Hope this helps your understanding of the video and the events which took place 🙏💪
I noticed how the male lion just sat back and watched.....if the lions had caught/killed the calf he'd have rushed in and eaten it himself....
As is his right. He’s the one that keeps those females alive or hyenas would just be wiping out female lions left and right. When the males are away, hyenas will follow the pride of female lions and steal every prey they kill.

To be fair, there is no obligation to assist regarding any natural inter species interactions. However, the decision was made due to their endangered status. It also took a while to track these Rhino’s as they moved in to a dense drainage line in a very challenging terrain. The fact that both of these Rhino’s survived thanks to human intervention is a massive win amongst many losses which this species sadly incurs due to Rhino poaching.
a pessoa que estava filmando desde o início deveriam ter alertado os guardar para intervir pois as espécies são raras
Please save them, how many white rhinos left?

Moc Vám děkuji😘💕 za srdce.
That implies that a mature Hippo one like this can be a scare to over seven lions including the male Lions
It’s a fair comment. In this case though the mom was suffering from an infection so she struggled to defend the calf. In terms of hippos, new born calf’s are equally at risk of predation however they don’t venture to far from water so incidents like that are not recorded very often as they return to the water when under threat. New born hippos are more at risk from dominant male hippos than other predators.
I’ve watched plenty of similar videos and never seen an adult rhinoceros behaving so calmly when under attack by a bunch of lions. Especially with a baby there too. Is this rhino sick or been sedated??

This video needed a very basic description of the action at the end. I've only been able to piece together what transpired in the abrupt transition from the rhinos being harassed by the lions to the point where humans are involved, the rhino is on its side, etc. You didn't need to be Shakespeare to do a decent job in describing what the footage itself could not and did not explain.
Appreciate your input 💪
