- It was on a holiday in South Luangwa National Park Zambia, september 2017. During our morning game drive we saw a group of lions were attacking zebras in daylight. After the lions caught the zebra they started eating while unfortunately the zebra was still alive....

What's fascinating even while being eaten alive the Zebra still tried to bite that male lion in the head but the lioness went straight for the Zebras neck to protect the male!!
It was no bite, it was just annoyance, she grab the neck to have peacefull dinner that is all.

Their roll in the circle of life may not be a pretty one, but it is necessary for all of life to thrive. This zebra ran it’s last day in this life, and instead the lions will use only it’s body to continue their journeys until the day they too die. That’s how it goes for everything. It’s actually kinda beautiful.

So in 7 1/2 minutes 2 lions and 6 lioness eats up whole zibra. They are still hungry i guess. Great camera job and great catch.

Poor Zebra. Wish they'd just put it out of its misery right off the bat. Edit: I heard male lions are supposed to eat first but they all seemed to be eating together.
They were extremely hungry, that zebra got dismembered in less than 5 minutes

yeah, big cats kill are usually efficient..the ground looks scorched, they usually put the prey out of misery first, but the lioness which did the choke hold was too hungry herself, she stated eating too..just double bad luck for this zebra

National Geographic and the Discovery Channel never show this type of raw footage and graphic stuff. They sugarcoate it up with emotional music and drowning out all the cries. A lot of editing to give a more family friendly effect to nature. I’m not used to this raw savage realistic version.

Yeah, unless they can time a blindly thrown kick correctly, they're helpless. I've noticed they also manage to get themselves eaten alive by lions more often than other animals. Probably because they're just large enough for a pride to gather around and eat but weak enough that they don't need to be subdued first. There are a few other such videos on YT.

There is clear share of tasks among male and female lions within a pride. Female lion are better hunters because they are more agile. Because of their strength, male lions job is to protect the pride's territory, females and cubs from other predators and intruders. They sometimes buy that with their life. It's a hard job and the pride needs strong male lions to protect them, so the price is that they get to eat first. This social order works pretty well

That's usually what happens, but not the rule, eating the prey alive is much less frequent, but it still occurs. It can happen when the lions are too hungry or when the prey does not show resistance. You see, when the zebra attacks it triggers the predator instinct, only then the lionesses goes to the throat to finish the job.

I have never seen male lions share food like this. They always eat first.
When it's a big kill like that they usually do. It's the smaller kills like antelope that they don't share. You can see once the zebra was basically neck and bones is when they stop letting them eat.

Yes, this is painful to watch. Of course, I sympathize with the zebra, but I also feel sorry for the lions. Keep in mind that zebras are far from easy prey. I think that lions eat prey alive when they're desperate to eat it instead of waiting for it to die.
Their kicks can easily kill or severely injure lions if struck in the head, neck, or chest, and their bites don't exactly tickle them. Lions have a success rate of only 30% in hunting, and that's for multiple lions working together, so they often have to go without food for days. When hunting zebras, a fair amount of the hunts are unsuccessful since the zebra either fights back aggressively or the lion mistakenly loses its grip on it. There are many instances of zebras killing or injuring large male lions. In fact, lions that have their jaws broken by a zebra kick are likely to die because it's very hard for them to hunt and eat.
So, you don't have to feel too sorry for zebras. Both sides have their fair share.
I'm just sorry for the wild animals. I get frustrated when kids at school keep saying "Animals have such easy life, no school, no homework, no exams." Like do they even know that living as a wild animal is 1000 times more stressful than living as a human? These animals are worried about getting killed by predators or diseases or not finding food, while we are worried about our school grades. Those two aren't even comparable.
