It's really cool how at first he can't get out of the mud but as soon as his life depends on it he gets out.
As a biology student and zoology enthusiast i have never had any issue with allowing natural selection to take place and observing rather than interacting, however, in this case, considering the dwindling numbers of rhinos left in the world due to unnatural hunting by humans, i would argue it might actually be a better idea to try and preserve individuals such as this one who are not being hunted or sick, but instead are simply trapped. It’s strange that i’m saying this and i know people will attack me in the comments for even suggesting it, but their numbers are just so low and on the decline, it might be time to try and rescue some of them.
Good thinking but the better black rhinos will be the ones in the next generation if we started saving weak rhinos evolution would not be able to take place as effectively this one was obviously a survivor!

The rhino is by far the most difficult prey to be hunted in Africa. Too strong, too fast and with a killer horn!

+james smalling Yes, elephants are difficult, as are hippos and buffalos. But you can find videos of lions hunting them. Now, when it comes to rhinos, I never saw any video of lions even getting close to hunt and kill rhinos.
Luis P the elephanths that get killed by lions are typically not close to fullgrown, or sick/old. The reason there is no videos of a lion killing a rhino is probablly because there are so few rhinos left compared to elephants. and you cant even compare an elephant to a hippo and especially not buffalos. I've seen lonely male lions kill fullgrown bufflalos several times. Even saw a shelion do it one time

I agree that there are much less rhinos in the wild, and that certainly influences in this case. But you can find a lot of videos of lions and rhinos interacting in a hunter/prey behavior and I never saw lions winning it.
In the case of young/sick/old animals, that's a key factor for lions to hunt all of these big preys we mentioned, except the buffalo, which is a more common prey to the lion, I agree too.
But if you consider the particular characteristics of the elephant, hippo and rhino (all of them in the same condition of age/health), I believe that the set of strength, agility and aggression makes the rhino the most difficult to be caught by the lion. Also the dynamics of the self-defense mechanism, makes the rhino more likely to hit and hurt the predator due to the movement of his horn: very close to the ground and then up. In the other hand, the elephant is less likely to hit a much quicker animal with its tusks, the defense would rely in powerful kicks or the attempt of crushing. And for the hippo, his defense of biting is extremely dangerous for the lion, but again it's a slow movement, difficult to hit a lion, then it adopts the "survival mode": crouch to protect itself and try to reach the water as soon as possible.

That rhino was very smart in the situation. He could see the lions were scared of him because of his horn and even while he was stuck he would get closer to the closest lion, knowing they would get scared and back up. Also once out he kept going in circles to make sure he had a clear view of each lion and charged at them to scare them off. All in all he used their own fear against them. Good footage! :D

But for the lions turning up, I am not sure the rhino would have had the brains to move away from the area it was stuck in. The longer it stayed there, the worse its predicament became. Ironic that those who came to kill it saved it's life.

Normally, I'm all for the predator in these videos, and the No Human Interference rule, but in this case, I was rooting for the Rhino or for a Jeep to pull up and chase off the lions. The Rhino is just a little too critically endangered to let even one die.
