      I'll never forget the first time i heard this song. I was a senior in high school and in my film class with 5 other of my friends/classmates. This one guy comes in that, just for context, is the goofiest, sweetest, dorkiest white kid, and he had a cd player and headphones and says "you gotta check out this song" with a huge smile on his face. Each one if us took turns with the headphones and we also watched each other get emotionally brutalized and stunned into silence.
      Little fucker was kinda weird for that but honestly it was so memorable just how unprepared I was to hear it.

      One of my favourite artists of all time, he's just so cold. "I spit in the ocean and created microscopic organisms." "The earth was hot, but when I stepped down it became cold" "When god said "let there be light" I turned that shit the fuck off and that's why the earth is only 5 billion years old."
      "I shine so far away from you that you will never get a glimpse of me
      Attempts to extinguish me? Don't even bother me none
      Like rtaded kiss throwing ice cubes at the sun
      A victory against immortal techniques will never be done

    Immortal recently did an interview where he said that this story is true. He was not involved, and that the mother figure in the song, in real life, could have been a sister, or daughter or cousin, etc. Hood stories tend to evolve as they move through the community, is how he put It. But he did say that he can show the building where this happened and that the community started killing the men involved in this situation because what they did was so atrocious..and eluded to the fact that It was somebody underaged who got raped..and that’s why the community took matters into their own hands after the incident.

    Great review. I still remember where I was and the exact moment someone showed me this song and that feeling of complete shock and sadness after listening to it. It's so visceral and compelling, and it just shows what a masterful moment in hip hop and songwriting this is. There are other songs that are equally graphic, other songs that focus on morbid subject matter like this, but no hip-hop song i've ever listened to has delivered that same inexplicable, gut-wrenching melancholy you feel when you hear this song. It just has so many elements working perfectly together. The rise and fall of the protagonist, who you can't help but feel some sympathy for as a victim of circumstance. The twist, the underlying meaning, with the mother representing the source of humanity and potential, the nurturing backbone of life and communities, and the corrosive nature of impoverished circumstances that end up corrupting and destroying this potential, and the source of it.
    Even the track itself, a haunting ballroom ballad, and the rough nature of the beat's repetition. The piano melody doesn't flow throughout the song, but stops abruptly and begins again, creating a disjointed flow that feels like you're stuck in an endless loop. It's not a continuation, but a repetition, and perfectly captures that idea of being stuck in this dance with the devil forever, like groundhog day; the sad reality that in underprivileged communities, this almost feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy - an environment of hopelessness and misfortune that contributes to the ongoing and repeated cannibalisation of potential hope and prosperity.

    Thought I'd point out that you misunderstood the ending of Dance with the devil. The song will get much more dark/heavy when realizing how it really ends. First off, he did participate in the rape. They actually made him go first. The main characters name was William Jacobs aka Billy Jacobs. "Billy was made to go first, but each took a turn..."
    Another massive detail that you missed was that the woman they raped was really his mother. He didn't know at the time because they put a cover over her head which also helped muffle her voice, along with her jaw being broken. Although the line "those dirty bastards knew exactly what they were doing" implies the other guys did know and thats why the instantly covered her face and beat her/broke her jaw. All in attempts to muffle her voice, hide her identity.
    When he put the gun to her head and pulled back the cover, he was literally "staring into the eyes of his own mother." It was at that moment he realized it was her they picked up off the street, late at night, coming home from work. (It mentions in other parts of the song that his mom is working late shifts trying provide for him.) Once realizing what he had participated in, he killed himself by jumping off the roof of the building they were on. The other guys then killed his mom and agreed to never speak of it again.
    So yeah, it's pretty much the darkest ending that you can imagine. Listen to it again more closely while reading the lyrics. Creepy shit.

    • @arifeannor9573
      @arifeannor9573 9 месяцев назад +1

      He probably read that somewhere, they heard correctly, extrapolated poorly to some. Obviously he read somewhere from song meanings or something like that and took that for true. He said it was more symbolic where I think like you, it was really his mom. I never heard them say that he never raped the woman, mother or not though. How he thought it would be impossible for him to not know its his mother when he can't see her is maybe again from what he read or him not wanting to even think of it that way.

    You know your old man's awesome when you're listening to immortal technique together and he turns to you and says with widened eyes "hm. that was a good line "

    I remember hearing this the first time a long time ago.. such an impact.. gave me chills and actually made me feel sick... props for sharing this with your dad. Your dad seems to me as an awesome guy. Yeah and he is right these subjects should not be taboo, but should be talked about.
