I know your dad would love to hear Mockingbird, it's the perfect next step in his discography concerning in terms of the progression in this Slim/Em story. You see the reality of his domestic situation behind the exaggerated accounts, and just how tragic, complicated and in ways beautiful it really is. He truly loves his children in spite of his fractured relationship, and wants them to make it through this messy stage in their early lives to become good people, but Eminem has to be a paternal figure from the sidelines, and the song is in many ways showing his hopes and his grief felt during the first two albums, the tragedy he can't express except through Slim.
My dad died when i was 13, so seeing this makes me happy! You guys seem to have such a good time together listening to music and talking about it. Cherish it!!! Its a beautiful thing!
I absolutely LOVE how you and your dad can BOND through this...through music. Yall both sit and discuss so many genre's of music. This is truly amazing. Yall are both going to remember this forever. God Bless you both. Oh and Perfect Song to show your dad.👍
It’s beautiful isn’t it? Look at the way he (sorry, I don’t know their names) looks at his dad and listens intently and respectfully to his opinion (and vice versa). It restores my faith in humanity.
Hey there dad...as a listener from your musical era with kids of my own, I want to express my ultimate admiration for you and your thoughtful responses to this song.
I actually saw Dido live in a small club before Stan came out and she mentioned "oh this song someone in the US asked to use and I was super flattered! This Eminem guy!" And yeah a month later Stan started getting play on the radio and blew up massively.
Loved this reaction. BTW, Dido’s name is pronounced Dye-dough. This refrain for this song actually comes from the beginning of a love song of hers called Thank You.
Omg, did he just say, “he’s referencing ‘Kim’”? You and your dad are such a beautiful example of what’s possible with investing time in conversing with others.
@@shiny-xx8076 yep there are multiple call backs to My Name Is (which took me 20 years to notice lol). In My Name Is Em says “I drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive?” which Stan mentions in the car. Later in My Name Is he says “tell my dad I slit his throat in this dream I had” which Stan also references with the line “I didn’t slit her throat, see I’m not like you.” That’s my absolute favorite thing about Em’s catalog. It doesn’t matter if you’ve heard a song 100 times you never know when the light bulb will randomly go off and you’ll say wow I’m an idiot how did I not catch that before lol
@@chune4383 I suppose it all ties in now, but from the perspective of the song Stan couldn’t have been referencing a song that hadn’t been released yet but it’s crazy how many things Em has weaved throughout all his albums (i.e. “six minutes slim shady you’re on”, or just outright referencing specific songs like Guilty Conscience or the Columbine line on I’m Back)
Your dad def needs to get to know another side of Eminem, so I'd love to see some 'Mockingbird' and 'When I'm Gone' reactions ❤️🔥 Also, maybe, 'The Way I Am' :) Thank you
Noone had to explain a bit of this to me the first time i heard it and i knew how to pronounce dido and i knew her song didnt even need a video to understand all of it the first time i heard it. He paints a very vivid picture. If he was actually intellingent he wouldn't have needed all that help. If you mean emotionally intelligent, then thats completely different. Being in touch with your emotions is not anything like knowledge intelligence. True intelligence is emotionless and purely logical.
this is the song tha separates Em from most hip hop artists imo. Absolute masterpiece. I love how he was able to expertly write from the pov of both an obsessed fan, then from himself essentially. 4 FULL verses, not the 1 or 2 verse bs nowadays
Totally different genre but you saying that made me think of Chris Cornell when he did "I Promise It's Not Goodbye" - it's a poem a fan wrote, his daughter had cancer (I think) and he wrote the poem from his daughters perspective of "not saying goodbye, but this is the end for me" kinda. It's such a sad/beautiful song, I highly recommend it. He recorded it as a favor for the dad (and of course didn't include it on an album or anything - as to not make money from it, he did it just to do it for the dad) but you can find it on RUclips
Technically Snoop, Biggie, and DMX had hits prior doing the same. But this is by far the most successful multi-POV song ever released. So that's credit to Em.
Very true statement. The fact is he has alot of song like that. Never love again, darkness, 25 to life, which are total double entendre throughout. bad guy (stan pt. 2) may have one of the best verses ever on the end. Absolute genius!
Probably the most accurate statement here. Imo, the songs success, credit to Em, was due to probably a 1 mil dollar budget and the ears of both white and black America, which is a huge number. The other artists, though creatively gifted for delivering originality, didn't hold the same crossover success.
Stan's brother at the funeral having dyed his hair and implying he was going down a similar path always freaked me out a bit. Also Stan's reflection haunting Eminem in the window when he's realizing that it was Stan that he heard about the news. I always felt that part was representing that irl the thought of fans doing something like this really haunted him. 😬 It's simplistic perhaps, but those things always got me. For Christmas they should react to the Christmas SNL parody of this song they did with with Pete Davidson 😅 edit: 🤔 the Elton John part might make more sense if he's seen the surprise award performance where Elton and Eminem performed. Also kind of an interesting part of music history there.
Love how immersed your pops gets into each one of these songs you show him, he really wants the full emotional experience of each one. Shout out that you guys can bond like this
Great reaction guys.. FYI, the song is a sample from Dido's (pronounced 'Died-oh') own song 'Thank You'. The chorus hook of 'Stan' is actually the opening few lines from Thank You. It was a massive hit in its own right, particularly here in the UK where she was huge in the early 2000's. Stan is a great example of how you can take a song and transform it from its original meaning. In Thank You the chorus provides the happy juxtaposition to the depressing nature of the verse lyrics. But take that away and make the depressing part the focus, Eminem then cleverly crafts the story of Stan around it... It is in my opinion one of the greatest uses of sampling in hip-hop history.
@@MateoMarine I disagree, Thank You was already a big hit before Stan. Dido also had a couple other releases in the US both before and after Stan, so I think it's unfair to say she rode the coattails of the song. But regardless of what you think of her and her music, the point was that this is one of the most under appreciated and clever uses of a sample in hip-hop.
@@ibanezman04 thank you came out in 1998. Never entered top 100 charts in uk or us (thus not even airing on the radio), until after stan in 2000, thank you peaked at #3. But regardless of the crap you made up, you have no idea what youre talking about.

Honestly, this is one of the most amazing 'react' videos I've ever seen. It's not just one person listening to the song and saying 'yep, that was cool'. The way you both discussed how different aspects of the video and music and expression hit... The different things you both noticed, the things that weren't obvious to one, the things that weren't obvious to the other, the discussion about how the subject was handled, stuff that 'landed', the stuff that didn't 'land'.. This is without exception, one of the most in depth and most enjoyable 'react' videos I've ever seen. I qualify this by saying.. I'm not an eminiem fan. I was aware of this song before watching, and only clicked because I wanted some shit to listen to while I read more of a story I'm into. This conversation dragged me entirely out of the story I was reading, and into the discussion. Please do not stop. I will be watching more of your channel because of how much I loved the discussion and /actual reacting and thought and conversation/ that went into this 'react' video.
Props to dad for listening and understanding...props to the son for including dad and wanting dad to learn. You guys are awesome. It's funny because age-wise, I'm definitely closer to dad...but generationally, musically, I'm closer to son.
Kai- your song selection has had such a great progression! It’s obvious you put serious thought into the timeline of your songs and the channel as a whole Bravo!
The sequel to that track is called bad guy on the Marshall Mathers LP2. In my opinion it's an excellent point of view from the younger brother. A masterpiece of continued storytelling through albums.
I love this channel so much. Listening to an analytical description of a song I have listened too for such a long time is so interesting. Music is a great form of art because you can engage with it intellectually and casually, and enjoy it either way. Plus it is easy to consume because you two are so entertaining to watch! watching your dads reaction and your excitement to explain what is going on is such a relatable feeling. Thank you for uploading great videos you guys!
Dads reaction at the end questioning if Eminem reflects on the “Stan” character is an EXCELLENT segue into the song “The Way I Am”. I think your dad is kind of expecting Eminem to be sympathetic but his reaction when he hears the apathy and self fueled hatred will be gold.

I wish you guys had gone deeper into how Stan became so popular in pop culture as a term. As for your next Eminem song reaction, maybe go with The Way I Am since you referenced it in this video. Hopefully you guys do some tracks from The Eminem Show as well.
I'm from germany and when this song released I was 10 years old and didnt understand anything and never knew what this song was really about, but still listened to it every now and then. Now half a year ago I stumbled over it again on spotify, hits completely different now when you understand every last word in it.
When this was released, songs stuck pretty rigidly to the 3-verse structure. This song introduced a fourth verse, which was unexpected. The unexpected verse also comes too late in the story so from a technical standpoint, he’s using the surprise as the verse as part of the emotion of the story.
I love this channel. One of me and my late fathers greatest bonding activities was showing eachother music and sitting and listening to it. You've Gaines a subscriber for sure. I know it's not groundbreaking to say it but this song is incredible. Not only is the story amazing, the delivery and the journey of emotions with each verse as the story continues is incredibly emotional and so easy to connect with. Add the video and you just have a perfect storm of genius.

1:20 hearing him say Kim was "gut wrenching" when we all know he's about to listen to Stan was pretty great. His son kind of smirks and looks at the computer like "you ain't seen nothin' yet..."
The way your father changed moods when the last verse is playing got to me. I can relate because the first time I listened to this song the same thing happened to me.

Great reaction! I think all the eminem songs you have reacted to have been quite dark. Something softer like 'Mockingbird' or 'When im gone' showing his real side and his personal story would be a good next step 👍🏼 I think your Dad would enjoy that Kai! Looking forward to more eminem.
One of the beautiful things about this song is that he didn't opt for a full rhyming scheme There's a lot of half-rhymes - especially where a rhyme from the end of one line is matched in the middle of another - and a natural shift in the flow and delivery. It comes off very much as natural storytelling, with the rhyming seemingly coincidental. Something I really appreciate as a poet myself, since the way I write naturally is more typical of this style of verse. I actually have found it more difficult (mostly because it's less pleasing to my ear) to use more strict rhyming patterns. This song does something most don't, and it's great to see it in practice like this. I've found that I even think aloud and write this way even when I'm not intending to be poetic. I'd imagine it's probably similar for Marshall and that this song could be one of the truest insights into the way his thoughts flow.
Your dad has a great ear for music the fact that he doesn’t discriminate new genres and styles and can give a good honest look into it Also Ik you guys are loving that RUclips money based on the tans u guys got in this one😂

When I was a kid, probably around 8 or 9 years old, I woke up in the middle of the night and this music video was playing on the tv. I remember watching the whole thing and it felt like it was the first time I had ever heard music. I didn’t know that music could tell stories like that, stories that were so real. That was also the first time I had seen Eminem and for a little while after that I thought the guy who played Stan was what Eminem actually looked like.🤣 I miss those days where the music that you listened to came from mtv music videos or whatever you heard on the radio.

Adding to each of the verses, depending on what type of medium is being written or recorded, the soundscapes depicts the action as well. So you get scratching of pen on paper in the first, second and last verse, with the 3rd verse on the handheld audio recorder having a very subtle recording device soundscape . Overall a masterclass in storytelling. I'm a Stan of your son/dad music journey duo
As an old retired woman I remember when this song first hit the charts. I loved it and it has stood the test of time. People think old women like me are not able to gel with this music...they're wrong !!
I think from here with Eminem you take it to THE WAY I AM, as its from the same era, same album, and it might introduce your dad to the technical brilliance that is Eminem. The flow on that track is all time greatness. It will also depict the way the world perceived Eminem at that time, and how he dealt with the fame and its repercussions, given he was amongst the most well-known people walking the earth at that point in time. That was the peak of his popularity, and despite the fact that he had finally 'made it' far bigger than he could have ever imagined, it wasn't all roses and sunshine. Another great video boys.
I love watching reactions of people hearing any song for the first time. I wish I could go back and watch my first reactions to songs like this or Everlong by the Foo Fighters. They’re moments like no other.

I live Dido as well, this song was her original and Eminem did an excellent job making his own verses to it. Both excellent artists.
I actually saw Dido live in a small club before Stan came out and she mentioned "oh this song someone in the US asked to use and I was super flattered! This Eminem guy!" And yeah a month later Stan started getting play on the radio and blew up massively.
@@paynoattentionplease Damn, that sounds like a dope ass memory ngl 🔥

Dad almost cried and thats a testament to how amazingly this story is played out. It's visual even without the video. Amazing writing.
He was definitely tearing up at the end of the song. Great to see :) That's how powerful this song and lyrics are.
Dad said “oh boy” at the exact right time!!!
Omg, did he just say, “he’s referencing ‘Kim’”? You and your dad are such a beautiful example of what’s possible with investing time in conversing with others.
Thanks Mandy. We’re having a great time, and the comments from our viewers are much appreciated!
He's right. He did reference Kim indeed
@@chune4383 he also referenced "My Name is"
@@shiny-xx8076 yep there are multiple call backs to My Name Is (which took me 20 years to notice lol). In My Name Is Em says “I drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive?” which Stan mentions in the car. Later in My Name Is he says “tell my dad I slit his throat in this dream I had” which Stan also references with the line “I didn’t slit her throat, see I’m not like you.”
That’s my absolute favorite thing about Em’s catalog.
“six minutes slim shady you’re on”, or just outright referencing specific songs like Guilty Conscience or the Columbine line on I’m Back)
One of em's greatest work...the last part where he says--"it was you" gives me goosebumps everytime...such a great work of art

I agree seems like an awesome guy
Noone had to explain a bit of this to me the first time i heard it and i knew how to pronounce dido and i knew her song didnt even need a video to understand all of it the first time i heard it. He paints a very vivid picture. If he was actually intellingent he wouldn't have needed all that help. If you mean emotionally intelligent, then thats completely different. Being in touch with your emotions is not anything like knowledge intelligence. True intelligence is emotionless and purely logical.
Dad is such an empath. ❤ 😊 The sweetest guy. ❤
this is the song tha separates Em from most hip hop artists imo.
@@fsociety7494 also wrote from the pov of different rappers. He wrote Dr Dre's verse on "forget about Dre"
Probably the most accurate statement here. Imo, the songs success, credit to Em, was due to probably a 1 mil dollar budget and the ears of both white and black America, which is a huge number. The other artists, though creatively gifted for delivering originality, didn't hold the same crossover success.
This is one of the greatest songs ever made. The way he tells the story is just incredible.
Forgetting the fact I'm a huge Em fan.....I just think it's really cool the relationship you seem to have with your Dad. That's awesome for both you!!
Yeah 🙂🥲
You may not know this but there’s a sequel to the song called bad guy and that’s about Stan’s brother Matthew who’s grown up

He is an absolute genius a legend of our generation. Praised by all in the industry. That is impressive
Yes, but I'd say "Thank You" rode the coattails of this song. Dido wouldn't have been prominent in the US without Stan.
So happy someone commented on his pronunciation she’s not a fucking Pokémon

Stan came out 20 years ago and is still a very popular and strong hip hop song. Eminem really came into his own with the Marshall Mathers LP.

Curious since he said he was going to do exactly that after the song.

One of the beautiful things about this song is that he didn't opt for a full rhyming scheme
There's a lot of half-rhymes - especially where a rhyme from the end of one line is matched in the middle of another - and a natural shift in the flow and delivery.
Your dad has a great ear for music the fact that he doesn’t discriminate new genres and styles and can give a good honest look into it

Mad respect for use the explicit version not like other channels did, show Eminem as he wrote the stuff is how it should be
When I was a kid, probably around 8 or 9 years old, I woke up in the middle of the night and this music video was playing on the tv. I remember watching the whole thing and it felt like it was the first time I had ever heard music. I didn’t know that music could tell stories like that, stories that were so real.
Don't be a Stan. That's the message Em was sending with this.
Really soft spoken and well informed. You can tell that guy raised his son well .
Definitely need to do "The Way I am" next, this will show Dad a different side of Eminem, in terms of cadence and actual lyrical abilities.
