What I hear in this song is not the violence, but the pain Eminem felt and tried to exorcise. He wasn't killing Kim. He was trying to kill his love for her.

I was SURE his grin at the end was going to be because he had to break the news that those weren't "crickets" in the beginning of the first song but the sound of Em' dragging Kim's body through the leaves. It really add's a whole other level of psychopathy to '97 Bonnie and Clyde when you realize KIM is what happened directly before it.

You gotta eventually get to "Hailey's Song" his love story with his daughter is absolutely inspirational, in a way Eminem's career, from Infinite all the up until Relapse is a story of a man being cast into the bowels of Hell only to have his daughter make the heroic journey into the abyss to save him in the nick of time before he was lost to us forever.
Sometimes I look into my own daughters eyes & understand everything there is to understand about the man Eminem is.

She talks about her childhood and how close she was to her dad not knowing the things she did as a young child were not normal. Like sitting court side at piston games or having a tour bus so she could spend time with her dad etc. her good friend from that time frame co-hosts the show and talks about going along on several marshals tours with them and how close Hailey and her dad are.

You guys are so naive. This man comes from a generation where subversiveness was almost like a rule. Provocation was everywhere. Don't you guys know the 70's music ? 70's movies ? Books ?
I know every new generation likes to think they are the most subversive that ever existed in the history of mankind - and it's difficult to imagine your parents being rebels because you're supposed to be rebelling against them - but come, just a bit of humility.
The song itself is "just" a crime scene like we've seen so much in the movies. The thing is, it's accessible to very young teens who just don't know what to make of it, other than nervously laughing at it and impress their friends with it. I mean, Eminem has a lot to express, no doubt about that... But this piece is so litteral, it's not even artistic. It's just here to impress young people and make them feel like they're rebels to be able to listen to something that's so "different" and "subversive". And it's very embarrassing to know that your son fell into that trap and did not even hear a good song.

Eminem is the definition of not seeing the whole picture of him as an artist, unless you know his actual history and relationships in his real life. Once you do, it completely changes your perspective on his art. Or if you are like me, the Slimshady LP came out when you were in high school, so you've taken the entire journey alongside him and never had to go back and learn the history. It's hard to explain, but some artists make you feel like you are navigating life alongside a peer, who is part of your circle, rather than somebody you just listen to for enjoyment. He is definitely one of those artists for me and they are rare.

In an interview years ago Eminem said that the song Kim was a love song. He wrote it for his wife and she was the first person to hear it. He played it for her and asked what do you think? Her reply was “you’re crazy. You’re actually crazy”. Eminem wrote this to show his wife how much he loves her in a very strange way. His point was not to shock for the sake of shocking but to show his wife, “this is how much I love you, this is how I feel so strongly about you.” I did paraphrase that last quote slightly but that was the gist of it

To this day, it's in my top 3 songs of Eminem. Kim just takes it to a whole other level. The imagery it puts in your head is crazy. It's so messed up and dark but at the same time, in my opinion, it's amazing art. I've always felt amazed at how he was able to put this together. Making everything rhyme and have it make sense, while getting your message/emotions out there.
I feel like this is the best way to show the world what some men go through when they get cheated on. Some men just snap and can't contain themselves. Or what ideas go through some people's, head but never go through with it. Just an amazing/scary song.

Fun fact about this song is when asked, Eminem stated that he wanted to write a love song for Kim, but he didn't want to write the typical type of ballad, and that when him and Kim got back together, before they got married, he actually played the song for her. Yes, this is what love looks like through the eyes of Slim Shady.
Most of his Horror core actually comes in twin song versions. Just look at 3am, which is a continuation to Framed.

Something crazy/some back story you might have missed, or just didn't mention:
In 97 B&C , Eminem is talking about Kim leaving him for another man with a son. He says to Hailie "..and you don't wanna brother do ya? (Na)"...then at the end of the song he says "..first help dad with 2 more things out the trunk..". Then if you listen to Kim, which is obviously the prequel to the events of 97 B&G, during his 2nd verse, some of his lyrics are so profound that they are even edited out in this explicit version of the album (fun fact, Kim isn't even on the clean version of the album, it's replaced with an entirely different song.) The lyrics edited out are something like "..there's a man and a little boy lying dead in your living room.." He then explains to Kim in the 3rd verse, a scenario where it would look like SHE was the one who committed the murders , leaving him unscathed. "...one of you grabs a knife and he accidentally gets his adams apple sliced...double homicide and 'suicide' , with no note.." just another level of craziness and story telling , that connects the 2 subtleties in the songs. Em is implying that he didn't only kill Kim, but he killed her new husband and his son as well. Pretty F'd up shit from a man who was obviously going through something very serious in his life. Kim also sued Eminem eventually for the song and was devastated when he performed it live with her in the crowd after he promised her he wouldn't.

She slit her wrists in a hotel room after they got back together and he promised he wouldn’t play this song at the ensuing show. He performed it on stage with a blowup doll that had KIM written across its chest with her in the crowd. There’s a ton of back story and context to unpack with Em, his content, and all of his core relationships tied to his work.

Absolutely love the dynamic you and your father have!
About Kim, for me personally, this song has somehow helped me at times when I was younger when I was full with rage that no one around me could contain. It was a very dark time in my life and I felt so misunderstood and so angry and full of rage. Listening to Kim always somehow made me feel less alone. I do not hear Violence as violence when I listen to this song, instead I hear pain, someone full of rage they are unable to express, so it comes out in the form of some kind of artistic rage?
Actually I loved this song way too much in my late teen years, to the point that for my high school French as second Language speaking exam, I chose to talk about this song which was shocking as hell to my teacher. I spent 2 months preparing my foreign language transcript about “Kim” and when I explained the influence of this song, I remember my teacher and the examiner were moved that a song so violent could somehow be therapeutic to some Teen!
Important to say I passed my speaking exam with an A+ Haha! I was deeply infatuated with Eminem and “Kim” spoke to me on a level no other piece of music could.

    • @mernaabdelsalam9470
      @mernaabdelsalam9470 2 года назад

The beauty of “Kim” is that it allows you to create a mental image of whatever kind of dark emotions you are feeling, to let out dark energy you might otherwise have to be on some sort of substance to be able to contain. “Kim” kind of allows for a space to insert whatever kind of imagery to the lyrics that could for some people be helpful to contain unspoken rage that would otherwise be translated into real life violence. Sometimes this song would in a way “therapize me”? Haha, hearing someone else get out such anger and pain kind of does the same for you without actually having to do anything. But again, I had severe depression at that time and needed actual therapy. So I do understand this song might be shocking to many, but for me it was an emotional release to deal with my own anger issues.

Eminem is a true rapper. He is able to tell stories, say crazy stuff, say stupid stuff, and even some emotional stuff, but no matter what, he has us coming back. Eminem is the best, purest rapper/lyricist to ever touch the mic, regardless of what music he releases now, doesn't taint his status, but it increases his ability and longevity. He has two of the top three best selling hip hop albums of all-time (only behind OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below). He is America's best selling artists of the 2000s and the 82nd greatest artist of all-time according to Rolling Stone.
Within his music, he tells a story. He grew up with his mother, moving all of the time, and dropped out of high school. His music has told emotional tales about his struggles with addiction, his daughter, and, even a fictional story that is one of the greatest poetic songs ever in "Stan".
Eminen is a 13 Grammy winner who is sure to win more with his latest album, has shown longevity in a field where many artists fade out after a song or two, and has developed a diverse and special fanbase, so no: Eminem is not overrated; he is one of the all-time great artists.

this song was him expressing his feelings from the pain he felt from betrayal, and did it through the best vice he had and that was through the music. its a feeling everyone has felt at a point in their life not necessarily with their spouse, but could be a close friend, family member that school yard bully, and those feelings may not be to that extreme but still in a violent way, and instead of acting on it some people find a vice to channel it. another really good visual rapper thats shocking and he tells stories through his albums he went from gangsta rap to horrorcore after getting shot is brotha lynch hung hes got some stuff that makes "kim" sound like a nursery rhyme and the videos straight out of a horror film. which is what inspired him to go into the genre was to create horror films through his albums.

22:12 "He has to r*** someone, but he chooses not to." Sorry, but that's not what happened. He r***ed her, took the hood off with intent to kill her, saw it was his mom, and jumped off the building.
To answer why Dance With The Devil gives chills so much, it's because there are SEVERAL chilling surprises. First, that when Billy Jacobs discovered that the victim was his mom (and Technique meanders into detail about the sacrifices that she had made for him). Him jumping off the roof wasn't a big surprise, but it was dramatic. Technique says he was there with Billy and he r***ed his mom too. He speculates that the devil is in attendance at his live shows. And he concludes that "you better say never. Because a dance with the devil might last you forever."
Technique made all sorts of statements that drove home the seriousness of these twists, rather than just saying they happened.
"She cried more painfully than when they were ***ing her
His whole world stopped, he couldn't even contemplate
His corruption had successfully changed his fate
And he remembered how his mom used to come home late
Working hard for nothing, 'cause now what was he worth
He turned away from the woman that had once given him birth
And crying out to the sky 'cause he was lonely and scared
But only the devil responded, 'cause God wasn't there
And right then he knew what it was to be empty and cold
And so he jumped off the roof and died with no soul"

Grew up to this. Classic material. I think the purpose othe song was almost a way to vent.. imagine being in that situation. The true terror in this song is every man's primal fear losing your woman who you have invested time and resources into, the mother of your child. Your family life was non existent growing and now your new family is destroyed by the woman you trusted betrayal.. a betrayal akin to the one experienced by his mother's neglect and abuse. You see the desire and true willingness to keep his family when you hear his tone with his child at the beginning, its the only piece of honesty and love that can't betray him. In the song he is able to fantasize and fully lay out what he would've liked to do but didn't through this little thought excercise. The graphic nature is not the scary part. The scary part is that a man pushed to the edge can break in a very bad way...there are certain things that can really break a man.. for a man's mother( the woman who is meant to nurture and care for you) to betray you and then the mother of your child to do the same.. man this song is a f**king masterpiece
