This year’s crop of cars doesn’t look too different from that first event’s, when we ran a Corvette Z06 but not one with a mid-engine 670-hp V-8. A Cayman appeared on the first roster, although it was not nearly as track focused as this year’s Cayman GT4 RS.
There have been massive performance increases in the past 17 years, and not just for Porsches and Corvettes. The Honda Civic Type R offers 315 horsepower from the factory. Toyota fielded two cars: the rally-inspired GR Corolla and a manual-transmission-equipped Supra. Zero Hyundais appeared in 2006, but two this year-Kona N and Elantra N-returned times that might surprise you. BMW sent the M4 CSL and the electric i4 M50; both were significantly quicker than the 2006 M6 in the first event.
A new Subaru WRX and Audi RS3 brought a rally-car experience at two different price points. After a few issues with the BMW M240i, the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, and the Volkswagen GTI last year, we invited them back for a chance to improve their lap times. Mercedes and Lamborghini were missing from the first roster, but this year we lapped the new SL63, a 2+2 with all-wheel drive, and Lamborghini brought out a Huracán Tecnica, a less extreme version of the Huracán STO.

Why has C&D not tested the Tesla Model 3 Performance on the Lightning Lap? If you do test it then preheat the battery. It can add as much as 100 HP above 50 mph. It truly makes a MASSIVE difference in acceleration.

@@layne4376 you are right. I am not expecting it to do that well but they should at least test it now that they have tested the BMW I4 M50 which is a direct competitor for it. In all fairness my Tesla Model 3 Performance weighs the exact same(4,100 lbs) as my AWD Kia Stinger GT2 did. Once you modify the Stinger they actually end up with very similar performance numbers. I believe they have tested the Stinger so why not the Model 3?

@@Bill-NM I understand your point, but also why they stick with what you can get from the dealer. I also think the feel and balance of the car is too seriously impacted by tires, and that the engineers carefully selected many components to create what they thought was the most cohesive overall package. I would suspect all cars could improve their lap times on R compound tires, but I'll bet more than a few more economical cars would become dangerously twitchy at the limit.

In the comparison there were clearly a few cars hampered by their tires - C&D even said that a few times - it's just sad to see all this effort go into a big test to have something like tire questions leaving the viewer not knowing which cars are truly better than others.

As a former 'vette owner (X 3), I have great fondness for the mark. Every car that exceeded the Z06's performance here started at about twice the Z06's maxed out price. The Senna is hard to consider as a production car and at a million or better used, made of unobtanium. While the Z06 exceeds my economic restraints and ability to drive, I consider this to be the greatest bargain in automotive history.
Hanging tough against this outlier competition is a landmark. And then if you want you can make it faster and parts to do so will be plentiful.

As a Brit, for years I’ve had to put up with ill educated people , including the press who are mostly to blame harking on about America cars not being able to go around corners. This was aimed at Mustangs and Corvettes mainly. Despite all the way back to the 1980’s with the C4 corvette having a reliable race car in the form of the C4 Corvette beating the Porsche 944… 29 wins to 0 ..so much so they had to create a Corvette only championship in the Corvette Challenge. Today the awesome C8 Corvette super car pulling 1.22g on the corners and getting a 2:38.6 being the 5 th fastest car tested at a price half that of the 4 before it and about a 5th the price of the Senna. This with day to day drivability more so than any other car here, including a car you can work on yourself with parts attainable price wise ( if your in this price bracket). Now you can see why the Brits are called snobs!,,,, Credit where it’s due, that’s one amazing car.

Then it would defeat the purpose of being a completely stock, off the showroom floor test. This is Car and Driver, an automotive journal that test new cars for consumers. You just can't go and put Hoosiers on a BMW M4 CSL when that car has a partnership with specially made Michelins for it and test it on different tires for consumers. Unless it's independent studies, sure, but these are not. These cars are loaned by the manufacturers.

They leave stock narrow bias ply tires on them and run 15 second 1/4 mile times even though the guys (like my dad) put different tires on right when they got the car and ran 12’s back in the day. Regular auto-crosser, the shift knob issue I have to let slide because I wasn't there, don't know who was driving or what was going on when it happened. But I've seen shift knobs come off & shift lever forks broken, & shifters ripped out of the transmission & on more than one occasion for all three. Only once was it the cars fault.
      1. Some drivers, can get, cough, cough,.... 'Aggressive' in their shifting. & It may not have been the one driving at the time. A previous driver could have cracked something, leaving it open to failure. & 2. Track driving a street car not meant for the track is abuse, fun abuse to be sure. But abuse none the less. Part failure by VW or any other brand under these conditions should be given 'a bit' of slack. I haven't heard of this issue in general public GTI's which leads me to think it's one of these two.

This video certainly makes me think tyres are contributing more to lap speed than ever before. The M240 improved with better tyres than last year, the Audi improved with a tyre upgrade and the M4 was suspected of not performing optimally with replacement tyres (there are interesting videos of how OE tyres are markedly different from option tyres of the same brand and type). Amazing, considering how lardy cars are becoming. I have an M3 Competition that weighs the same as a small country and yet for the most part it hides it weight amazingly well.....if it could only hide it's size too it would be a welcome upgrade (I live the UK with narrower roads than much of the USA). I also love how the electric car (Beemer) was shot as the sun went down. It felt, somehow, prophetic and allegorical

I'd agree with tire technology making a huge impact on the lap time improvements. Take something like a C6 z06. In 2006 it ran a 3:01. Five years later it was 8 seconds faster. Im sure if you put the cup 2r's from the c8 z06 on it, and made the suspension a little stiffer to compensate for the increased cornering forces I bet it would go another 8 seconds faster still and be around a 2:45 car with especially the same 17 year old chassis.

    • @Pmtd1234
