On our 15th trip to Virginia International Raceway, we set lap times in 21 of the best performance cars of the year. Over three days of hammering tires and brakes on America's most grueling road course, a few records fell, some old scores were settled, and we came to the realization that this in no way resembles work.

Hey all! Thanks for watching. To answer some of the most commonly asked questions:
Where's the Chevrolet Corvette? We ran it last year: www.caranddriver.com/features/a35368145/2020-chevrolet-corvette-stingray-z51-lightning-lap/
Where's the Tesla Model S Plaid and Model 3 Performance? We'd love for them to show up next year.
Where's the Porsche Taycan? It ran last year: www.caranddriver.com/features/a35386386/2020-porsche-taycan-turbo-s-lightning-lap/
Where's the leaderboard? Right here: www.caranddriver.com/features/a23319884/lightning-lap-times-historical-data/
And Camaro?
The list wouldn't be a track time list without a Corvette in it.
@@gabrielkimbrough Check the leaderboard. We've ran 10 different Camaros over the years.
@@caranddriver sorry mate, you make boring comparison
@@caranddriver Don't think I'm evil but carwow is better than you
I loved the condescending "There were also 4 SUVs because you, the car-buying public, keep buying them."
I do love my Cayenne Turbo, though 😅
Stop buying them then 😂😂😂
@@kenchen704 i don't.
For LL2 class; "No other cars has gone quicker here for less money" = Mustang Mach 1. Enough said. Simply amazing!
I think you forget about the Corvette !
Man that GT3 is so pretty. Impressive results from the Type R, too. I know not everything can be included, but would have loved to see an STO or F8 Tributo to see how they compare.
Doesn't Ferrari puss out when it comes to actually letting people test their cars since they like to only release info that makes them look good? Kind of like a China/NK syndrome, not enough balls to make a baby, let alone take criticism.
Lol prob I bet there almost all like that though. They would get the best numbers under there team I guarantee it. Prob doing everything they can to get an advantage. Like wind slightly downhill etc lol
@@willthomas5953 but they clearly all aren't like that because I've never heard of any other manufacturer outright refusing to provide car journalists press cars for testing against competition or even just solo testing to confirm their own performance claims.
@@moogle68 there’s still lap times for some around the Nurburgring but they aren’t official. Pista did it I think 7 minutes flat but that was a few years ago
Would be nice to have a Ferrari SF90 for a lap:) it seems to be pretty fast)
That Merc shows what the engineers at AMG can really do. Wow
They dominate the recent F1 not only due to luck:))
What? Cheat by bringing tire warmers to the track event? Bending the rules in every way possible is the real F1 tech cross-over.
The best or nothing
Nice but it barely beats the fastest time set by a lowly 2019 C7 Vette ZR1 around VIR (Benz - 2:37 vs ZR1 - 2:37.25). During the 2018 C&D Lightning Lap the '19 ZR1 time was 2:39.5
Thanks for having the cars, narration, track runs all in one video. I hate having to search endlessly for one individual car or the time it ran. Next year, I'm betting that the c8 zo6 corvette runs a great time.
I’m here a year later to say that they are absolutely salivating over it. It’s fucking awesome and the pride of the US. It’s our answer to the snooty ultra expensive euros.
TLDW:
1st place: Mustang Mach 1
2nd place: (tie) Subaru BRZ & Toyota GT86
3rd place: A bunch of automatics showed up too.
Lol cope. The description box straight up tells you and is ordered by slowest to fastest.
Mach1 is the prettiest car there and sounds awesome.
I thought no one would ever finally test the Mach1 on the track, but it finally happened and damn it;s impressive. Why have so many other auto journalists not done this. It’s like they don’t care and decided to ignore it.
Cause they love to hate mustangs😏
Well per Throttlehouses video they weren't allowed to with the car they had? Overprotective marketing depts?
@@trspratlen : They love to hate Vettes too.
Even to this day, I have not seen a Mach 1 vs GT350 track or 1/4 test. The world has gone crazy.
The fit and finish of Ford cars is very poor and they often get bagged on hard for this fact. No one doubts a Mustang (or a Vette) is a fast car. They just dont compare as a whole most of the time and it reflects poorly on the manufacturer.
Well done Carlos. Next year C8 ZO6 fitted with every performance related option, and the best tires available, with extra sets
What other sports car is slated to release next year that could compete with it?
@@theonlylolking 992 911 GT3 RS?
@@salvissmudo4496 Thanks! It should be interesting
@@salvissmudo4496 That's almost 3-4x the price though. There's literally nothing in the price bracket.
@@shawndejong6699 we are just talking performance here. Not performace/dollar ratio. Porsche does amazing things with significantly less power. The 760hp ZR1 in 2019 is less than a second faster than the 992 GT3 in this video.....all with 503hp. That is why you pay so much for a Porsche.
I have to say I'm impressed with the type r and the mach 1. I'm a little disappointed in the BMW's but tires I guess. We all know the porsches are track beasts.
In defense of the BMW, it has the most technologies packed in that small package. Not the fastest but still a great driver's car that will deliver fun experience for all types of drivers. With that said, that Mach 1 is unbelievable!
@@goochigoochs3836 mach 1is literally 28 seconds slower around the nurburgring than the bmw
I always find it interesting how the Type R is the only FWD car that gets compared to other more powerful vehicles. Porsches are only engineered for track, which is crazy but amazing machines.
@@goochigoochs3836 No defense needed. I worked for bmw for 12 years and still own a 535i. Trust me I know all to well of how BMW's are the ultimate driving machine. Ironically i work for Ford now and also have driven the mach 1, gt350 and gt500.
@@wanglee21 I agree the type r seems to punch above its weight class.
Raise your hand if you crave the Mach 1!!! ❤️☺️👊 Truly a beautiful and well executed S550 Mustang. (And this is coming from a GM guy of 21 years…)
That 911 GT3 though… 🤤 That lap time is otherworldly for a naturally aspirated, production street/track car.
Lastly, Carlos: great narration and cadence as always! Love your work, old friend.
Love this series it's amazing. The AMG GT Black Series is a beast and so is the Porsche GT3 & Panamera.
A factory Mustang GT with minor modifications (mostly sticky wider tires) is 10 SECONDS FASTER vs a Ford GT. I remember the First Lightning Lap well.
A manual Mustang Mach 1 doing well and keeping up, for the price is the one for me.
The civic! Way to go Honda.
Man that Black Series GTR is a menace. Beautiful and aggressive as hell and delivers like crazy
What a group! Proud of the Mustang!
King of LL2! My money has been well spent. I love my Mach 1.
The most shocking data for me was the M3 is now a 6 figure car, absolutely insane
How much is an M3. Now. I didn’t think it was that expensive
Inflation hit some car companies harder than others. I can see 2008 happening all over again soon
@@wanglee21 I can see 1929. Happening again. It’s all planned out. It’s by design. Look at America ha ha ha ha Biden is the president. Hilarious. It’s all smoke and mirrors. Look at the 85 billion dollars worth of equipment that America has given to the Taliban it’s all done on purpose. Donald trump says it was done on purpose. There are very dark forces at work that control the so called government. And these are the powers that decide how the world is run. It’s ao in your face now they are not even trying to hide it. But it’s been going on for so long it’s now just a part of the human psyche to accept it as normal. Ffs we are doomed
My favorite article of the year! Excited to hear/see all the onboards you post! This is one of the only print articles I still will go out of my way to buy as well!
Mine too!
Finally a full-length video, and you guys nailed it! Great job to the entire team. More content like this please!
Good job Mustang! Impressive.
Wow, Porsche has been working some magic for sure. So see a 992 911 GT3 make such a performance gain, is incredible.
Glad you release a video. Been reading the article online all week.
Love the Mach 1 footage. Thank you for doing this year after year!
My goodness that GT Black Series looks incredible. Must be a dream to dive that on track 🔥
It would have been nice to see the time of each car posted on one side of the screen - for the whole video. With each car time added as the video progressed. That way we could keep track easily.
Yeah, it's tricky juggling how to present the times. For safety, you can see all the times from every Lighting Lap event here www.caranddriver.com/features/a23319884/lightning-lap-times-historical-data/
Great narration Carlos. Always a pleasure to hear ya!
Wonderful video! Great visuals, soothing and precise commentary.
Im jealous of the guys who got to track all those cars! That be a quite a day.
You guys have some pretty capable drivers. These are some immensely fast cars. I don't think keyboard warriors recognize just how intimidating this task is.
"Intimidating"?? Nah. Not at all. And, especially not intimidating on an empty race track...
Given all the nanny controls and the fact that the only qualification to 'entry' is $$$s, at the end of the day, they're all road cars with full OE warranties meant to be sold to a wide spectrum of people with equally wide variation in driver skill.
All that HP with a complete lack of nanny controls?? Now, genuine driver skill is required, and not everyone possesses that..obviously.
Thank you might have triggered one of the warriors
@@elgar6743 it really didn't take long for the kid with the busted 150hp civic to show up lol.
@@elgar6743 Taking the uphill esses at 125 mph is the very definition of intimidating. Try doing them at 70 mph in a normal car. PS: Most of the nanny's were likely turned off to maximize the performance of the cars.
@@BB-zv8tx Huh? Are you projecting, publicly, that your Civic is 'busted'??
I know a good mechanic....
Thanks for finally doing a real review video for the LL segment! And you even got Carlos to narrate!
What a selection of cars. Such a perfect review. 👌😃 Loved it.
i think the Cayenne is the most impressive vehicle there. that lap time is stupid for a SUV
@BeastlyS7 the RSQ8 is basically a fatter RS6
Nothing about an SUV is impressive. You can fit more in a Panamera and it would destroy it. SUV’s are bought by normies, not driving enthusiasts.
People forget it is still a PORSCHE :D
@@gweflj We found the tough guy! I'm dying to see your non-normie performance vehicle. Please post a vid !
It is Porsche, it is German, that is why Cayenne did it excellent!!
Wow, very impressed by the Mach 1, nearly identical to the m5 cs. Awesome video production as always!
Due to the tires.
@@sextonjr8
Every lap time was literally due to
The tires they used. Literally
2 of these cars are running R Compound
Agreed
Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed the video.
what a great video!! please never stop doing this!!
Awesome video, makes me want to drive VIR even more every year I read the annual Lightning Lap ⚡. Always great to hear Carlos too! Thanks C&D 👍
I'd love to see a C&D BRZ/GT86 project car with different stages of tire, brake, suspension, and engine mods to see how fast you can get them to go, given various budgets.
So glad you do this at VIR, it's my favorite track! We camp there every year for some of the bigger events.
REALLY like the video. Wonderful to see these cars up against each other.
CT5-V Blackwing ftw 🇺🇸
That mustang 🔥
Great job! Finally some quality numbers comparison
Awesome sauce! Lots of incredible cars. Seems the Civic Type R is the story of the day. Amazing.
Love to see Carlos on here a lot of the similar segments to motor trend when he was there about 10 years ago!
Considering the TLX’s weight compared to it’s power, it did pretty well. Type R and Cayenne are the most impressive in my opinion.
I will never understand why Honda hasn't built a new S2000.
Also, the GT3.
Type R didnt show me anything I didnt know, its strictly a track car. You are giving excuses for the TLX, it does not deserve a type S badge
@@vroomgc It’s a FWD car regardless of whether it’s a track car or not. To deny its impressiveness is dramatic. The Type S’s engine is underwhelming but Acura worked its magic with it’s SH-AWD system considering it’s weight.
@@vroomgc The Civic Type R is hardly a "track only car" It is an extremely spacious four door hatchback. At its price point it is simply unrivaled. Add to it legendary Honda reliability and durability and you have a future classic. I would literally take the Type R over any car in this test. Except the Porsche 911 GT3 that is.
I've been waiting a long time. The most gorgeous track in America!
Well done carlos. Getting technical 👏🏼
Loved the article. Great Job!!!! Should love to see next time some EVs in the mix. Perhaps the Porsche Taycan, Mustang MACH-e and of course a Tesla Model S. Keep up the great work and thank you for developing and sharing such an excellent review.
This is so good. Some true enthusiast review for once. Well done, no bs.
Absolute perfection. No other media outlet do anything close to this
Great Video. Fun to watch.
Loving all the Car content. Thx guys. Great episode.
Wow that n/a rwd Mach 1 is very impressive and looks so good too. What a great pkg for the $$, .......and of course the GT3 is a beautiful gem as usual. That Black series, jaw dropping. I love many brands and appreciate them all
I've always been impressed by Porsche's ability to improve the GT3 from gen to gen without adding turbos or a ton of more horsepower, it's one of my favorites all time. The Mustang is a great package for the money it's too bad (and greedy) dealers are marking them up so much.
Enjoyable video, thanks!
This video deserves so much more attention!
NIce summary! I was hoping for a table at the end there of all the times together for comparison.

The FWD, economy car-based Civic Type R posting an identical time to the Ford GT from the first LL is poetic.

I saw a GT350 in the bushes just a few days ago. Officer on the scene giving the young driver a "good talkin' to". The car was probably not totalled...but close.
I wonder if we can get them to test the Mach 1 with the automatic and Handling Package next year. Given how much quicker the 10R80 accelerates over the manual, a new LL2 lap record could be set!
5 days ago how n the hell I miss this for 5 days great video like always Mr. Lagos
I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation! The Mustang surprised the heck out of me! Next year, I'd like to see the much ballyhooed Elantra N.
Man, Honda’s Type R amazes me every single time!
The Type R is so advanced it's only competition are car's that have the advantage over it by 100-200hp. At this point nothing power wise that can even compete with it.
@@wanglee21 That’s such a crazy thing. It just goes to prove how much passion Honda has for its performance cars. The Type R is so affordable and such an engineering piece of art especially comparison to its main competitors like the Veloster N and the STI

Seeing as the 2006 Ford gt was the dream car of my childhood ever since I drove it in a plantation 2 Ford racing video game, I am enamored by that Type R matching its lap speed. The type R has a very unique and sporty design as well, and a more comfortable and spacious cabin, for a lot less money. Very special.
@Thor Odin son lmfao 10k hard miles on mine and hasnt grenaded yet - worst Ive seen are a few worn synchros/gear teeth
This is mostly from the clutch delay valve Honda uses which slows clutch/gear changes
Very easy to remove it and avoid the issue altogether
My 8th gen Si had the same issue and a plastic clutch master cyl I replaced with a metal 9th gen one .....grinds/lockout gone - 9000rpm shifts like butter
@yoyo 19 Tires have alot to do with overall grip for sure but being a fwd platform they had to add negative camber while dialing out torque steer with 300ftlbs going to the front axle
The suspension/hub assembly is a work of forged alumimum art
Just when you think its going to give up the ghost - it keeps gripping and you have higher exit speeds on throttle......the Gs in your gut....its next level grip/performance....at 39k its frankly astonishing sometimes its sooo good
Next year, Lotus Emira. I hope.
Finally, been waiting
