This is a Real World Preview of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. As always, this isn’t a full review since we were using pre-production units, but it’s pretty close to one. I got my hands on the R6 Mark II and NEW RF 135mm f1.8 at a Canon Press Event in San Diego. The biggest questions being answered in this video are, what’s changed, is it worth the upgrade from the R6 and is it a mini Canon EOS R3?

Looking forward to a head-to-head between the R6 and R6 II sometime in the future in both stills and video! I think Canon's decision to price the R6II the same as the R6 was a good thing since I've been thinking about getting a used R6 in the near future. I was considering an R or RP but the autofocus on the R6 makes it a much better choice for me. Thanks Jared!

Jared, based on what I've seen on most of the R6 Mk 2 "first impression videos", I believe an upgrade from the R6 to the Mk 2 doesn't make a lot of economic sense, unless you need the very fast shutterless frame rates (40 FPS vs 20 FPS) or the removal of the 30 minute time limit. The other improvements likely don't have a big impact on most standard use cases. I will say that the improvements from the R to the R6 were quite significant. Thanks for your review!

Having owned an EOS R for a few years now, I'm very happy to be upgrading to the R6II after skipping the last generation.
I WAS super keen on an R5 before long as my biggest gripe with the R6 was the 20mp sensor, I recall telling everyone that I'd have been all in for it if only it was at least 24mp, well now we have one that IS... plus all the other new features make it a gigantic upgrade over the original R

It will also have better dynamic range and overall image quality. According to Canon, the R6 mk2 can still produce sharper results than the R thanks to a less aggressive AA filter.

@@Gregori-mi2vy8nc6y a few years ago I would have said the same thing
That said, I've had absolutely zero issues with either the EOS R or the R6II
Despite DSLRs being around for longer, they very often included live view modes anyway now, which operate essentially the same as a mirrorless does now, they just got rid of the mirror in between.
The new bodies work great, and the shorter flange distance of the R systems gives way more creative control to the manufacturer, without hurting exisiting lens options
Happy to be a test subject when my camera performs as it does compared to the days of DSLR

For reference my current gig is a nightclub photographer
      I'm using the R6II and a 16-35 f4L lens in a DARK nightclub
Zero issues focussing on people any time needed, sometimes it needs to use the infrared focus beam light but otherwise it's always bang on whatever your focus point is

I swapped the Mark IV and bought the R5. The auto focus is not as good as he is making it out to be. Although it is better than the Mark IV it is not perfect and has its flaws. Especially working with the newspaper I tend to use spot focus a lot more than eye detect. It is fast than having to cycle through which persons eye you are focused on. He claims the autofocus rarely misses even with running or moving objects. I have tried the auto focus on every single setting and it misses a lot with my dog running no matter what.

@@evi2083 I had the 5D Mark IV (and shot with the best Canon DSLRs for 18 years). The R6 Mark II AF is light years better than any Canon DSLR including the 1D Mark III that I shot with as a pro for 12 years. I took the R6 Mark II out and shot hockey - arguably the most difficult sport to shoot - for a couple hours after getting my new cam. Out of the box, it NEVER missed! It acquired eye AF every time, thru plexi-glass, even when the players were wearing masks or cages. It was incredible!
My 1D Mark III would have taken so much fiddling with the AF points, or I would have just used the center point all game, and it still would have missed 50% of shots. The 5D Mark IV would have been significantly worse. I think I had a 95% perfect hit rate with the R6 Mark II using the EF 70-200 2.8 III adapted.
I also had the EOS R and it was better than the 5D Mark IV, but not nearly as fast or accurate as the R6 Mark II.

I already listed my R for sale a month ago to get a second R6 because I honestly love the camera but now I'm just going to get the new mark II. I shoot weddings primarily along with nightlife and automotive work so this will be a perfect little upgrade. Just recently I've had 2 clients ask that I do both photo and video of an event and the one thing that missed me off and was the only thing I missed from my 5d IV was the ability to quickly switch from photo to video. With the R6 it was such a pain in the ass to look down at the mode dial and switch it over, especially since these are very low light scenarios inside of nightclubs. This will solve that issue and I can't wait to get one!

I wish that camera companies would give 1080p video some love instead of treating it like a red-headed step child nobody wants. 4k optimization is awesome, don't get me wrong. But why is it asking too much to oversample 1080p? They already do it with 4k. GOOD 1080p is still worthwhile, and the file size savings are massively worth it. Have confirmed with both Sony and Canon that neither of the new cameras (A7R, FX30, R6 Mark ii, or anything at all) that oversampled 1080p is not offered and not planned to be offered at all. Reviewers are doing everybody a disservice by not chasing after this and just focusing on how good the 4k video is.

I like the scenarios Canon set up for this but I would like to see something slightly more challenging for the AF test: a football scrimmage in full gear (ie: helmets). I want to see how well the AF switches from head-ish area when the eyes aren't visible to locking on the eyes when they come into view, how sticking the AF is, etc. If a Canon rep is reading this: please set up something like a 6-on-6 scrimage/demo where you're telling the photographers what play is coming half of the time and letting them figure it out on the fly the other half. Football is fast, complicated by the helmets (especially with a visor), and frequently has other people getting in front of the intended subject. This would really showcase the AF performance especially if it's supposed to rival the R3.

But just 5 days before Canon's announcement, I finally gave up hope and reluctantly decided to abandon the Canon ecosystem, even though it meant abandoning my many excellent L lenses as well. I bought a Sony A7IV and a couple of Sony lenses. I now regret that decision, as I would not have to replace all my great Canon lenses if I had just waited a few more days before giving up on Canon. Oh well. C'est la vie.

As much as I like the idea of this camera, I'm still on the 5D Mark 3 and 6D Mark 2, for photography purposes I'd still say that their good enough for someone to get by, also for video as well, the 5D Mark 3 with Magic lantern filming at 3.5k 14 bit RAW is perfect for documentaries, I've also used it for a commercial for Audi and they were impressed with the results. All in all it's what you do with your gear I guess.
If I was to upgrade I'd wanna go for the R3 or 1DX Mark 2 or 3, Purely for size, I've got fairly large hands and have got used to the bigger bodies and grips, the R6 original is a fantastic piece of kit but I hate that when you hold it, it genuinely feels like a toy.
Smaller and lighter is better for a lot of people, but for me I want something I get can get an affirmative grip on, and the R6 is just too small for my liking.

IMO this version of R6 is what I wanted/expected 2 years ago. This time though I was one of those naives hoping we'd get R3 sensor in R6ii and I was expecting a price hike - I got that wrong too. Well sort of - where I am, the R6ii launches at 600-800 credits more than the R6 OG, so it is more expensive on some markets. Overall though I think it is a pretty well rounded offer from Canon when comparing to Sony a7iv.

    • @lj_hepp
      @lj_hepp Год назад +2

I wouldnt compare it to the Sony A7iv. You will be disappointed. Unless you are looking at investing in either camera then Sony is hands down the way to go. For one, it has almost 10 more megapixels, (not that MP is be all end all, but still is a factor) Also, with canon's current mirrorless lens offerings, the whole situation is a joke. The lenses are cheaply constructed and are less robust than their predecessors and they are 10-20% more expensive as well for some odd reason. Also canon doesnt hand out their lens mount to third party manufacturers, therefore all of the 3rd party companies have to spend serious money reverse engineering the lens mount. This is why we have not seen sigma or tamron, etc producing lenses for canon mirrorless line. Sony has all the R&D money they need and then some. All of this is coming from someone who has shot with canon for over 15 years.

I am serious amateur photographer who has had the R6 going on nearly two years and while I love the camera have been frustrated a bit with small MP size vs the R5 and the buffer when shooting airshows. My reason for not purchasing the R5 was primarily dollars. Not only is the R5 about $1500 more but the CFXpress cards aren't cheap either. I was interested in this upgrade as a possible option vs purchasing an R5 either new or used and while the features are tempting probably not enough to get me to upgrade as the video upgrades are of no interest as I don't do any video. As to the price point being kept the same to me this hurts Canon's potential buyers as it reduces the value of the original making it less financially sound to make the leap. Had they increased the cost of the new R6, they would have increased their customer base by appealing to both first time buyers and existing owners, in my opinion.
