Forget all the other Superman actors. Christopher Reeve WAS Superman. He was the one who really humanized the character. In this age of gritty, dark reboots, it's been forgotten that the reason Superman is a compelling character is because he's a genuinely good man. Perhaps the reason Reeve could portray that so naturally is because he was also a good person, a Superman in real life. His first two Superman movies set the template that superhero movies still follow to this day.
At a event in St. Louis many, many years ago. I took my son Sean to meet Chris. My son has downs syndrome. When we got to him, I introduced him and said "Sean this is superman." He smiled and said. "No I'm just a actor that got to play superman." I remember tears in my eyes as I looked at him and said, "you've always been superman, more now than in the movies." I still get emotional thinking of it.
I’m reading Christopher’s 1998 autobiography “Still Me”, and I’m up to the part where he describes going to these Oscars. His appearance was kept pretty secretive, and he was nervous about what could’ve happened, like hitting a bump and having a full body spasm. The fact he still went up on stage is so brave

That was the most emotional heart wrenching Academy Award moment in the history of the Oscars When that curtain was raised and Christopher Reeve was introduced was a moment that everyone in that theatre and at home would never ever forget It still touches my heart and soul to this day Christopher Reeve would pass away 8 years later on October 10 2004
It is so overwhelming to see such outstanding actors as Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks, John Travolta, Meryl Strep, Brad Pitt... To give this kind of respect and admiration for the man who was truly a superhero and fighted until the end with all his power and showed the world that superheroes truly existed. Christopher Reeve brought happiness, admiration , respect, kindness and courage to everyone. Seeing Gwyneth Paltrow this emotional it's such an explainment of everything the amazing Chris Reeve achieved, and he will always stay in our hearts and in humanity. Rest In Peace and Long Live to the most unique, talented and strong man the world has ever seen. The one and only, Christopher Reeve, truly a Superman.💕😭💟👼🏻👏🏻
Christopher deserved that standing ovation before all A-listers. He was going through massive health issues. He was paralysed. He was an awesome actor and a perfect superman. RIP ❤❤
And with the simple raising of a curtain revealing that extraordinary man on stage, all of Hollywood was on it's feet. Perhaps the most heartwarming, heartbreaking, legendary moments in award show history.
I don't know why but I just cried for 10 minutes! I had a spine injury, although it isn’t serious, I suffered for almost 1 year and yet to completely recover. I was about to give up. Christopher Reeve, I have mad respect for you, sir!
i once participated in a live chat with him, i told him that he should run for president, he thanked me for the flattering remarks and that he may look at that, i think. He is now resting in peace.
An actor's actor. He was so much more than Superman. Not only did he survive a horrible accident, but he pushed forward and tried to continue acting. If you haven't seen his remake of Rear Window, please check it out. Tremendous.
Christopher Reeve had shown courage when he came to the 68th Annual Academy Awards in 1996 months after he had an accident that damaged his spinal chord. The ovation he got that night was super.

My Dad took me to see Superman when I was 9 years old. I thought Christopher Reeve was the most incredible thing I had ever seen. He was my first celebrity crush. I'll never forget that.
Same. As I was born after his death (literally a month), I didn't know that he had passed. Just recently I wanted to see what his looked like now and I found out.
Such a moment. I was 8 years old when I first saw this and I cried seeing Superman like this. It was just so cruel. As an adult I have a new appreciation for it, because Reeve proved everyday after that that he really was Superman.
Tears streaming here. I met Dana circa 1999. We were at a Marfan Foundation fundraiser. She was the speaker/honoree. I went to tell her what a fabulous speech and how inspiring she was and during my conversation, I noticed she had green spinach visible on her teeth so I told her and she rubbed her teeth right then and asked if she got it. Took another attempt and all clear. She was so sweet, so down to earth, so beautiful. I’m grateful I got to to meet such a truly special woman. She just radiated love and beauty and warmth. God rest her soul and Her Superman.
Oh my god,he's so strong and positive, not caring about being in a wheelchair. He's still smiling through the pain and willing to help others, that's really special, because if I was to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life,I'd cry 24/7. He was a real life Superman.
Would you consider yourself to be a good person? How many lies have you told, and what do you call someone who lies? Have you ever stolen something, and what do you call someone who steals? Have you ever taken God’s name in vain (very serious; in Old Testament times, the Jews wouldn’t even say the name of God for fear of blasphemy) - even ‘OMG’? One more: Jesus said whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery in his heart; have you ever looked with lust? Well I’m not judging you - but if you’ve done these things then you’re a liar, thief, blasphemer and adulterer-at-heart; that’s how seriously God takes sin. He is Holy (perfectly good/righteous and separate from sin) which means that H e is perfect in justice - and if He were to judge you by the moral law (we’ve already looked at 4 commandments) would you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is hell - the wrath of God upon you for your sin. Is that concerning? But fortunately, God’s will is not that you perish. He wants all men everywhere to be saved. So do you know what He did for us guilty sinners? In self-giving mercy, He sent His Son Jesus Christ. He lived the perfect life that we should have lived - tempted at all points and yet He NEVER sinned. Through His life, being in very nature God, He revealed God to men; but we in our hatred condemned Him to death. On that cross as Jesus suffered, He took on the sin of the world and was judged in our place; receiving God’s wrath. You and I broke God’s law, but Jesus paid the fine. God can justly forgive us. On that cross He died, then He was buried, but 3 days later He was raised from the dead - conquering death and Hell and ushering in The Kingdom of God. He then ascended to the right hand of God the Father (where He came from) now Lord of the living and the dead. God has fixed a date when He will judge the world in righteousness. What you need to do is repent (In humility, acknowledge your sin before God and turn to a relationship with Him) and trust ALONE in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross; and God will grant you the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then be baptised. When you place your trust in Jesus - the Lord and Saviour - these things will happen: 1) God will forgive the sins that you have committed; they were paid for by Jesus at the cross. 2) The perfect life that Jesus lived will be credited to you. He will find you holy and blameless on judgement day (and now), as Christ’s righteousness covers you. 3) You receive a place in Christ’s kingdom as an adopted child of God. God becomes your Father. Eternal life isn’t just about living forever, but a personal relationship with God Himself. That life can start now; The Father will reveal Himself to you if you seek Him. 4) God doesn’t just save you from the penalty of your sin (Hell). He can save you from the power of sin itself. Whoever practices sin is a slave of sin; but when you repent and believe the gospel [WHICH HAS BEEN DESCRIBED] the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you and sanctify you (working in you to further abandon sin and turn to the will of God). When the end of the age comes, and eternity begins, this work will be brought to completion as you are finally freed from the presence of sin. Jesus offers to take away your sin and to give you His righteousness; you must receive it by faith. Choose this day if you will align with the world, or with Jesus and His kingdom - only His is eternal. ROMANS 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. EPHESIANS 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no-one may boast
@@Elias.M92 God wilfully came down as a man in a poor area of the world and lived a life of servitude to others. He also voluntarily gave up His life in order to save others. What's narcissistic about Jesus?
He’s a big comic book fan in the first place. That’s why he went to play ghost rider twice (even though he might not suit the part). Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think he changed his last name to Cage cos of Luke Cage.
Chris es el verdadero alma de superman, él vive en el alma del verdadero superman. Ojalá Tom Welling o Henry se den cuenta que tienen ese alma en su interior y si no son ellos, el que la tenga podrá volar..
This was kept a secret the entire event, all the way up to the last hour. Reeve barely made the trip due to having to fly over and coping with the stress of the flight, lodging and preparation. But he insisted on going through and the producers treated it like the President of the United States was making a spontaneous visit. Nobody with the exception of three or four people knew Reeve was going to be there, and none of them said a word. Nobody in the audience knew he would be presenting.
True true, the likes of Hugh Jackman are very highly regarded! I suppose I just look at modern Grammy Award shows and a lot are dressed and sat with a miserable face to prove a point about their ego.
Wow, seeing them clapping for almost a whole minute made me tear up... they all seem like they look up to him. Especially Nic Cage at around 0:29. Truly a beautiful moment.
Christopher and his family visited my school whilst filming The Remains of the Day. I got to shake his hand and his fingers reached my forearm I was so small. He said ‘thank you’ to me for no reason. My hero who made me believe I can fly, it’s my turn to say ‘thank you’ ❤️❤️
A lot of big name actors standing up for the man himself Christopher Reeve, rendering respect not pity. He had a powerful presence to him, a humble kindness and an inner greatness that made you respect him. I miss the daylights out of him. I wish someone could have helped him walk again.

The Longest clap ever in the history in Oscar one minute and 11 secs!!
The longest was for Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin had the longest standing ovation in Academy Awards history of 12 minutes.
Remember when South Park made fun of him
Liam's dear how do you get your statistics??? Or you just like to overdramatize??
WoW!

And you do know that!
Christopher deserved that standing ovation before all A-listers. He was going through massive health issues. He was paralysed. He was an awesome actor and a perfect superman. RIP ❤❤

This is the first time I’m seeing this and I’m in tears. Growing up in the 80s, you saw Christopher Reeve as your hero because he was Superman.
Looks at all those familiar faces in the audience. They got to be there and give this legend that applause.. amazing.
Yeah most of them are a bit younger and later on, Kelly (John’s wife) dies in 2020 😔
A gracious and courageous man to the very end.
Of course he was; he's Superman, after all.
Thats what I've heard too. He got more humble after his accident. Anyways god knows better. May his soul rest in peace.
Peteto Chibs Please don't describe yourself.
I beg of you.
Peteto Chibs Oh,
The irony.
Peteto Chibs Because you have absolutely no evidence to berate and attack this great man.
And with the simple raising of a curtain revealing that extraordinary man on stage, all of Hollywood was on it's feet. Perhaps the most heartwarming, heartbreaking, legendary moments in award show history.
Whenever I need to ugly cry, I come here and watch this.
Me to.... My friend, me to
Why would you need to cry
Damn right!
I don't know why but I just cried for 10 minutes! I had a spine injury, although it isn’t serious, I suffered for almost 1 year and yet to completely recover. I was about to give up. Christopher Reeve, I have mad respect for you, sir!
He truly was Superman. His heart, strength and drive for good was stronger than any human on this planet.
i once participated in a live chat with him, i told him that he should run for president, he thanked me for the flattering remarks and that he may look at that, i think. He is now resting in peace.
Christopher Reeve, even deceased, would still make a better President than whom the idiots of this nation elected.
I'm seven seconds into this and I had to pause because I was crying. He's so beautiful, what a wonderful and courageous man.
It was one of the best moments at Oscars Academy... So sad, so emotional.... It is not difficult to make a teardrop.

A real and decent person let's someone know, and you did. Well done hon! Neat story and memory. Cheers.

When you place your trust in Jesus - the Lord and Saviour - these things will happen:
1) God will forgive the sins that you have committed; they were paid for by Jesus at the cross.
In a sense, yes, I'd be bitter too, but it's so illogical, isn't it? You'd still be in a wheelchair but miserable into the bargain.

That is amazing!
Nic Cage’s genuine respect for him and his survival, knowing his own connection to the Superman legacy, was wonderful to see
