You got to love Christopher Reeves performance as Clark Kent. He really pulled off the clumsy mild manner reporter side of him from the comics and he was a awsome Superman. I kinda wish Henry Cavill could make his Clark Kent more clumsy so people won't suspect him as Superman, but he makes another great Superman in my opinion.. R.I.P. Christopher Reeves he was a great iconic man.
Clark hasn't been clumsy in a LONG time. People forget that the Reeve movies were based on Silver Age Superman, where "Clark Kent" was just a disguise. The modern interpretation is that Clark Kent is the real man and Superman is just his public superhero persona.
I absolutely loved Christopher Reeve! Not just as Superman but as an Actor and human being! He was a huge loss!! On a side note.... His last name is without the "S".... It's George Reeves who played Superman in the TV series.
Christopher Reeve's perfectly calibrated physical acting in every scene as Clark Kent cannot be overstated. Look at how he struggles to open the bottle. Look at how the door hits him at 1:41; it moves him naturally, like it would anyone else. He plays it so perfectly, from the way he hunches to the way he speaks... nobody ever really captured how difficult pretending to be Clark must have been for Supes better than Reeve, and it's why he'll never be matched.
It’s like how a lot of actors can’t play Both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Like most actors can do a good Bruce Wayne but a bad Batman or a good Batman but not a good Bruce Wayne.
@@raulbetancourt5795 -- If you watch the sequence closely he moves his body away as soon as the door touches his back. If he didn't move an inch that door is likely shattered.
"Of course not Lois.... I mean w, why would anyone wanna make a... total stranger look like a fool". Amazing performance, so many subtle nuances in his voice, expressions & body language. I also love the way that he looks at Lois once they're sat down. It's like he is trying to process her, deciding whether he likes her or whether he thinks she's an arrogant so & so.
I look at this scene now and see the #metoo moment where Clark Kent "puts Lois in her place" by "accidentally" rubbing her up. ButI still love it. Then he's just staring at her. Kind of creepy, but it works to sell Kent as an obviously very handsome man who is REALLY weird, nerdy, and someone a woman wouldn't like upon first meeting. This is my favorite movie, and I still catch nuances that I wouldn't have caught as a child. This staring moment is brilliant. He lets her know that he's interested by staring at her (a little creepy) right after feeling her up. It automatically makes him less desirable. And, of course, Superman is a total gentleman (even after looking at her pink panties.). I say they're brilliant choices, all around. I even saw the guy in a red shirt try to give Jimmy his tea. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!!!

I don't know why, but it kinda makes sense that Clark Kent would pretend to be so weak that he can't open a bottle but he can type faster than anyone. Why does that work? Don't know.
I think it's because Clark would want to come out as awkward and insecure, not incompetent. Some people got to see the awesome person under the awkwardness, but most got stuck with the awkwardness and that threw them off. It made him invisible and paid the bills.

He was geeky yet charming and handsome. There was something about him I found so damn attractive and those glasses. I'm a sucker for a man in those glasses. He and tom welling were so beautiful when they wore those glasses. But Christopher as superman was something else. He was born to play him. Best Superman of all time.
@Zesanactor Over-5 No. Fuck you. This superman movie has the chemistry. Man of Steel is a good movie but absolutely can not reach this one's atmosphere. Clark Kent and Lois, Superman and Lois, both are amazing here. 😊
You know, a lot of people interpreted the "Anymore like you at home?" line as referring to Krypton, but I interpreted it as referring to Smallville, which would also work since there's no one like him there either. So it's got a double meaning, which is pretty cool.
chris reeves was a great clark kent...you could nearly believe he was a different guy to superman.....reeve made kent a bumbling `ole` boy, who loves his little old silver haired mama and says `swell`.
@GodZpeed X7 I am a HUGE Man of Steel fan... Love Henry Cavill as Superman! ... I only saw these Christopher Reeves' Superman clip on youtube within the last week. I've changed my stance since then. Christopher Reeve is SUPERIOR compare to Henry. The movie looks more fun whereas modern one looks BLUE-ish and boring.
@@tonytran07 The problem with Man of steel is mainly Zack Snyder. He even mentions in an interview that after directing watchmen he had “deconstructed” the superhero genre and coming off of that he attempted to do the same with Superman as a character but missed the entire point of Superman as a character. These movies got him down perfectly and aside from some special effects it holds up today imo
Love that beat at 2:50, where Clark just becomes another face in the crowd. It almost feels like this is what he wants most out of life, is to be one among many
Christoper didn't need a padded suit, like Henry. In fact, Christoper was supposed to wear a padded suit, but he rejected it because he thought it wouldn't look right. He went on fitness regime so he could feel out the suit.
I would not discount George Reeves, who brought an aura of gravitas to the Superman portrayal and was in his own way as good a Clark Kent as Christopher Reeve was -- just two different spins on Clark, but both takes are among the best screen portrayals of Clark.
@GodZpeed X7 He did wear a padded suit. Do you think the dude has silver skin? Because the silver accents you see in muscle of the DCEU suits are Muscle Suit. It doesn't matter how thicc you are, spandex would not be form your muscles unless it's padded. Oh and by the way, to this day many people still say Christopher Reeve is still the best Superman, don't use the fuck off slang here because believe me, I'm used to it.
The "why would anyone want to make a total stranger look like a fool" line is so subtle but so powerful: It illustrates the evolution of the character of Clark, that he has absorbed his father's teachings and is able to cite them. The transformation scene was pushed by dialouge, but a movie excells when it can illustrate a character's thought process quickly and efficiently.
I can't believe it took me this long to see the innuendo in this scene. I mean, Lois literally beats his... bottle... and causes it to go off and spray his pants. And the way he's holding it. Jeez! :D
This movie was a HUGE part of my childhood back in the 70s & I am so glad my folks took me to see this when I was 5yo. It crushes me how Christopher Reeve & Margot Kidder past away.
Margot Kidder remains the best Lois Lane. A real, well-developed portrayal with great empathy. She always spoke of her fondness of the character and said she enjoyed playing her.
This movie kind of campy style is hard to pull off. But with great acting perfect timing and just a so charming Cristopher Reeve this became one of the best super hero movies of all time.
@Zesanactor Over-5 You're obviously watching the wrong films my friend, Hollywood today is more about the CGI and visual effects, over the heart and story sadly... On rare occasions like Avengers Infinity and Endgame... audiences today are focused more on the action than the story and heart. Sad times we live in but that's the reality of Hollywood and that's what makes money. Henry Cavill's whilst his Superman has the potential to be a good Superman, Zack Synder's Man of Steel lacked in Superman what the film was originally meant to be about... HOPE. Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent was the type of father that would put his son down on every turn.... Lacked inspiration.... Believability doesn't come into it when you're making a comic book movie, e.g like Superman or Avengers... it's about Suspension of disbelief.. of course you can make elements real, but the comic book factor is always there. The reason Christopher Reeve Superman was and is still greatly loved by fans, isn't just because he had the look to play the character. He played it with heart, HOPE and humanity. Storytelling and the relationship between the characters was as vastly as important as the visuals. Audiences today have far shorter attention spans with big budget effects films, where Hollywood has become more focused on fast pacing action scenes,. Many actors are even replaced on screen nearly completely with CGI.. There is great CGI, but because of the fast pacing industry, there is sadly a lot of poor CGI as well e.g Justice League.... However you're wrong, e.g films like Avatar made it's money because of it's great leaps in new 3D technology at the time, story wise it was ok, but it made it's money based on it's visuals. Smaller Hollywood films have and do make profits, but they don't make the money that big budget Superhero films which rely heavily on visual effects which is what sells over story in most cases.
This is amazing. I mean, i would love spending time with this Clark Kent. Even if he wasn't Superman. He is just an awesome person. Such a great performance there. But Christophers life story is just so damn sad(
I love how Christopher plays Clark just as much as Superman. He is Superman the whole time. If his size doesn't give it away, his strength and indestructible body will. So he plays Clark like a big, awkward nerd and yet, all he's trying to do is be careful. This was truly the best performance in comic book movies... until Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man.
Yes, Christopher Reeves not only looked the part(s), but actually played both with real elan and wit - very much echoing Cary Grant in his "Bringing Up Baby" persona, as Clark. No Superman since has managed that so well, and Henry Cavill? Huh. Just a tall, dark and gruesome clothes horse - very much, as another has said here, simply a swimsuit/underwear model with no charisma or acting chops at all. He can pull a face but that's about it. You don't get a sense of him living a part from within. And he's far too smugly pleased with himself ("Look at me, I'm SO good-looking..."). And Margot Kidder? Just fabulous: an engaging, intelligent wit shining through. As a TV trailer-maker, years ago, my trails for "Superman" were very much built around the Reeves/Kidder scenes, because they were so good.... and, yes, kudos must go to casting, scripting, directing, and, of course, to the performance of these two - who were both so perfect, and unbeatable, in these roles. Christopher Reeves' life-changing accident was a terrible thing... and I'm so sorry we've now lost the wonderful, unforgettable Margot Kidder....
I agree with everything you said apart from Henry Cavill's quality. He is a fine actor and more than "just" a model. I found him good in Man of Steel (haven't seen the S vs B). I don't like him more than Christopher Reeve, but he is good. Comparing the older Superman movies with the more recent ones is not so much an issue of the main actor, but society as a whole and the way movies are made which have changed over the years. Now excuse me, I need to order bluray versions of these movies.
@@Trusteft Henry Cavill has been saddled with the fact that every DC movie he's been involved in has been a complete mess. In fact, I liked the casting for Man of Steel. I thought Laurence Fishburne was great as Perry White, I enjoyed Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Amy Adams was okay but inoffensive, and Michael Shannon was entertaining as Zod. It's just a shame that the overall tone and script is completely not suited for Superman. I would love to see a Cavill led Superman movie with competent people at the helm.
They're playing different interpretations of the characters, they aren't meant to be compared. Heck they exist in totally different Earths in the DC Multiverse.
As great as Christopher Reeve was as Superman and he was amazing, i have to say he was even better as Clark Kent, the awkward posture and shyness with the whole goofy behaviour and nerdy voice is top notch, he really makes you believe that the two of them are not the same guy and that they're two separate people. Very few guys in my opinion have been able to master that except maybe Brandon Routh as he is quite possibly the closest to nailing both personas but Christopher Reeve is and always will be the undisputed man.
Really loved the naïveté from old Superman. He was human, but still felt like an alien no matter where he went. It makes the character more interesting and likable.
1) The casting of this movie was perfect, not just the leads. Cooper and McClure, feel like doppelgängers of their comic book counterparts. 2) The use of the Daily News building was essential. Not just the lobby with globe/planet, but the Art Deco exterior evokes the 1930’s and 1940’s when Superman was introduced and iconized.
Did Lois think he was a bookie to start with, as in a gambler, and then made the sarcastic remark about sending half his paycheque to his mother because she thought that would be his hidden excuse, but only to find out that it was exactly what he was doing?
When I was a kid, I didn't understand either but what I soon realized is that Clark is using an innuendo to masterfully suggest "Why WOULD anyone want to make a total stranger look like a fool?" It's an indirect character judgement hidden behind an innocuous comment. A perfect way for Superman to make people judge THEMSELVES 😉
Perry White aka Jackie Cooper was a Little Rascal at 7 years old, by the time this movie came out he was acting for over 50 years . He was the original child actor back in 1929 god damn.
Regarding the Superman "franchise" (a Hollywood term meaning "We will keep making crappy reboots of this film until the end of time because Ferraris are expensive"), it *never* got any better than Christopher Reeve. God bless that man.

@@aaronrosby7748 patience.
Always loved good ole Jackie Cooper as Perry White. “..and don’t call me sugar!”
I can imagine back in 1978 all the women aweeeing in the audience with love in their eyes when he asked for half his salary to be sent to his mother.
@Stellvia Hoenheim Ehhhhh no not all woman. sir. 🤔😑.
Rest In Peace Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve.
My favorite duo as Clois ❤️
He was geeky yet charming and handsome. There was something about him I found so damn attractive and those glasses. I'm a sucker for a man in those glasses. He and tom welling were so beautiful when they wore those glasses. But Christopher as superman was something else. He was born to play him. Best Superman of all time.
Between this movie and the recent Man of Steel, this movie is swell!
JENDALL714
Nobody can duplicate Christopher Reeve's performance. And I suppose they shouldn't even try.
JENDALL714, this movie is 40 years old this year, and is much better that Man of Steel.
You know what there's only a few people left in this world who is actually comfortable using that word: swell.
JENDALL714 It sure is swell! The best!!!
''Man of Steel'' simply lacks the charm and warmth that this film had, Christopher Reeve, by far the very best Superman ,....ever !!
@Zesanactor Over-5 No. Fuck you. This superman movie has the chemistry. Man of Steel is a good movie but absolutely can not reach this one's atmosphere. Clark Kent and Lois, Superman and Lois, both are amazing here. 😊
You are right. 👏🏻 👍🏻🤗
@Zesanactor Over-5 Comparing the "78" Superman to the Henry Cavils version is like comparing Ice cream to horse manure.
@Zesanactor Over-5 It's spelled "Cavill," and you'd think a fanboy would know that
*stop, my invincible son*
whilst I loved "Man of Steel" there is truth to your comment. Unfortunately films today are just simply not made in the same way anymore
You know, a lot of people interpreted the "Anymore like you at home?" line as referring to Krypton, but I interpreted it as referring to Smallville, which would also work since there's no one like him there either. So it's got a double meaning, which is pretty cool.
Also, he's an only child either way.
She certainly meant Smallville, but he might have meant both.
@@jdotoz She could only mean Smallville. She did not know about Krypton at this point.
@@gregorymoore2877 That's what "certainly" implies, yes.
@@jdotoz Agreed. I was expanding on your point.
chris reeves was a great clark kent...you could nearly believe he was a different guy to superman.....reeve made kent a bumbling `ole` boy, who loves his little old silver haired mama and says `swell`.
@GodZpeed X7 Sorry Man of Steel sucked and put me to sleep. Also horrible dialogue and they made Superman a freaking madman!
2.32. He grabbed her private part.
@Pedro Ivan Sanchez Agree. Christopher Reeve was and always will be the real Superman!
Any more at home like you? Understatement since he is kast son of Krypton.
"aah, not really. No!" He delivers that line brilliantly with a hint of sarcasm & sadness.
The guy that played jimmy Olsen is also Marty’s brother in Back to the Future
Marc McClure
He also played a Kryptonian named Dax-Ur in Smallville.
Love that beat at 2:50, where Clark just becomes another face in the crowd. It almost feels like this is what he wants most out of life, is to be one among many
the only one Superman forever
Leana Jo indeed he was. Many. People say Henry is better looking. I disagree, Christopher was a beautiful man.
He was a beautiful man
Still the best version of Clark Kent : the real character of a Superman.
The "why would anyone want to make a total stranger look like a fool" line is so subtle but so powerful:
It illustrates the evolution of the character of Clark, that he has absorbed his father's teachings and is able to cite them. The transformation scene was pushed by dialouge, but a movie excells when it can illustrate a character's thought process quickly and efficiently.
Anymore at home like you?
"Uhh not really, no."
Hahahaha!! Brilliant!!
I still love that!
what i truly loved about that was the comedic timing..could have come right from a sitcom but was done so well!!!
I can't believe it took me this long to see the innuendo in this scene. I mean, Lois literally beats his... bottle... and causes it to go off and spray his pants. And the way he's holding it. Jeez! :D
Then look how she jumped back like she suddenly realized he feels unlike a normal human being after rubbing him down for a few seconds.
The directing… the script… the performances… the cinematography. All perfect! Add John Williams' iconic music and you've got a classic :)
This movie was a HUGE part of my childhood back in the 70s & I am so glad my folks took me to see this when I was 5yo. It crushes me how Christopher Reeve & Margot Kidder past away.
"Any more at home like you?" What a great dual punchy line that is...
Margot Kidder remains the best Lois Lane. A real, well-developed portrayal with great empathy. She always spoke of her fondness of the character and said she enjoyed playing her.

The Reeves Superman was more believable than today’s cgi crap which focuses too much on high budget money making compared to heart and story.
@GodZpeed X7 hell to the no, reeve is the literal film definition of superman so far, cavil doesnt even come close
That's basically all reboots in a nutshell
@GodZpeed X7 Wrong.
@GodZpeed X7 Wrong again.
Great post 😊
Nailed it 😉
R.I.P. both of them.
Omg Christopher Reeve was so dorky cute as Clark Kent! ❤
Reeves really was the only actor who truly sold why Clark Kent's disguise worked so well.
RIP Margot Kidder. The Greatest Lois ever!
Excellent direction and quick edits. Love the in-and-out with the swinging doors at Perry White's office.
Really loved the naïveté from old Superman. He was human, but still felt like an alien no matter where he went. It makes the character more interesting and likable.
70s kids (and their parents) were treated to pure cinematic gold.
Actual good Superman-specific jokes in this scene, throughout.
The writers knew enough to be able to have fun with this.
Thank you for being the Lois Lane so many of us grew up with. RIP, Margot Kidder.❤💜💙💛💜🌷🌷🌹🌹😢😭
“Why would anyone want to make a fool of a perfect stranger”describes my life lately
Yes
You never know; there may have been guys like that working there long before Clark was hired.

"And don't call me sugar" lol. When they leave in the screw-ups, that makes the story seem more real. Jackie Cooper. The best Perry White ever.
Christopher Reeve IS Clark Kent/Superman. His body language, voice, facial expressions. Great performance.
Do we yet fully understand why Clark Kent asks "Why would anyone want to make a total stranger look like a fool?"
He's making Lois think he's giving her the benefit of the doubt, but he's really putting her in her place.
@@vivianpowell1732 really a genius way to go about it, if you ask me.
OMG FIRST TIME IVE SEEN THIS SINCE I WAS 8!!! So much nostalgia but hilarious scenes
Perry White aka Jackie Cooper was a Little Rascal at 7 years old, by the time this movie came out he was acting for over 50 years . He was the original child actor back in 1929 god damn.
I've watched this scene so many times and it finally hit me why Clark is such a fast typist. Because he's Superman, of course!
Christopher Reeve was damn good.
Regarding the Superman "franchise" (a Hollywood term meaning "We will keep making crappy reboots of this film until the end of time because Ferraris are expensive"), it *never* got any better than Christopher Reeve.
God bless that man.
Perry White: "Why am I paying you $40 a week, when I should have you arrested for loitering?!"
J.Jonah Jameson quietly writes down that joke for future use...
This and superman 2 are my favourite two films of all time. What an actor Christopher Reeve was.

Got this movie on VHS for my birthday as a kid. Still smile when I see it.
If said it before and imma say it again. Christopher Reeve did not play Superman. He was Superman.
This is good acting! The way Clark smirks when he said his mom was silver hair, the moment he says swell. The moment he relaxes that’s Clark! Superman has presence and Clark kent mild mannered. This is the farm boy everyone loves!
