Not just glasses though. When you see Superman, you see a strong and confident man from another planet, not a nerdy and shy reporter from a small town in Kansas. Well running in that speed and rapid acceleration/decelerations would in reality have much stronger effect than what was shown: girl would definitely be knocked out, sound would be like during an explosion so people next to his path might get deaf for some time, some glasses would be broken. Blow to slow down her fall will be much more visible and audible to have any effect , basically it would be aircrafts engine level of sound so again people around will get deaf for some time.

It is very much "of it's time". But that's just a fact, not a criticism. But it was still masterfully done. So much of these three first Superman movies were played for humour. (The fourth was just too awful beyond words) Christopher Reeve was the perfect Clarke/Supes. And Margot Kidder was the perfectly matched foil as the obsessive reporter and romantic crush. When I came home from the cinema in 1978 and climbed up onto the top of the pump house and stood there with my fist pointing up to the sky, I really could believe a man could fly. Once Richard Lester took over as director for Superman 2 after Richard Donner was fired, he rewrote many of the scenes so in his movie version (which was the actual theatrical version) this never happened. But when fans got wind that Donner had actually shot nearly 80% of both movies before the Salkinds fired him they began to clamor for the unfinished Donner version of this movie. The only place you’ll actually see this scene is in the Donner cut of Superman 2. You have die hard fans in both camps. I was just 10 or so when Superman 2 came out and was unaware that there was any “back room” tension. I never knew all of the ins and outs of the making of this film. Once Donner agreed to try to assemble his version of Superman 2 to the best of his ability after so many years had passed, it was put out I think somewhere in 2006. This was the opening scene of the movie. He also had a different way in which Lois discovered Clark was Superman. And there were other scenes originally shot but ignored by Lester in his version that made much more sense. Especially the explanation as to how Clark regained his powers to become Superman again. And the final conversation between Superman and Lois when they talk at the Fortress of Solitude and then he drops her off at her apartment, with one more brief conversation about how they can’t be together because of the danger it puts Lois in. Lester leaves out that conversation yet leaves in the scene of Lois in tears with her back to Superman right before he flies away. Maybe we can infer what that was about in Lester’s version, but in the Donner cut we are left with no doubt. Obviously the most controversial of all in the Donner cut was the decision for Superman to spin the world backwards and reverse time as the ending to Donner’s Superman 2 (since it was the filmed ending to part 1). And even in that scene we get new footage. It does cause a clash, to be sure. But Donner explained that this was always the ending he had in mind for part 2 and was coming up with a completely different ending to the first one before the Salkinds made him rush the first movie to the theaters ahead of what he was prepared to do. His explanation, which is pieced together as Superman 2 “the Donner Cut” begins, was that he intended on Superman throwing the missile released by Lex Luthor into space and it would shatter the glass prison that Zod and company were in, releasing them and the last scene we see was the three villains heading to Earth. The footage was shot but wasn’t complete for the ending of part 1. When Donner agreed to “Frankenstein” part 2 together years later he made that part of the summary of part 1 leading in as a sort of “introduction” to part 2. There are fans of his version and there are definitely fans of the Lester version. I like them both, but maybe because of the excitement of a good bit of extra footage in Donner’s cut, I fall down on the side that prefers Donner’s Superman 2 to Lester’s. There’s even a deleted scene in the Donner cut that explains why Clark goes back to the diner and handles the bully at the end of the movie.

For those who have seen _Superman II_ and are wondering why they don't remember this scene: This is from the Richard Donner cut. Richard Donner directed the original '78 Superman film & most of Superman II until he was replaced mid-way. The new director (Richard Lester) basically altered Donner's vision, removing scenes & filming new scenes, releasing the theatrical version of Superman II. However, for many years fans wanted to see what the original movie & scenes were supposed to be. The original director's version was later released around 2006, known as the Richard Donner cut.
I had read and seen all the interviews saying it was because Donner kept arguing with the Salkinds about the budget and when they'd be done, etc. Donner wanted this to the amazing and the Salkinds were cheap. Donner was never even given an actual "budget"....but I read today that Mario Puzo wanted to explore the sexual side of Clark and Lois and wanted them to sleep together. Donner balked and Puzo won? This is what I read. I think it's more the budget and fighting and the Salkinds wanted their pal Richard Lester in the project anyway...but it's just so nuts. I still love the theatrical release, even if the Salkinds screwed over Donner in making it.

Well running in that speed and rapid acceleration/decelerations would in reality have much stronger effect than what was shown: girl would definitely be knocked out, sound would be like during an explosion so people next to his path might get deaf for some time, some glasses would be broken. Blow to slow down her fall will be much more visible and audible to have any effect , basically it would be aircrafts engine level of sound so again people around will get deaf for some time.

The one thing I don't like about Henry Cavill's Superman is that his Clark Kent is exactly like his Superman. Christopher Reeves played both the dweeb Clark Kent AND the confident Superman.

@@mjrussell414 really…they didn’t “take it out.” This is a scene from the Donner cut. Once Richard Lester took over as director for Superman 2 after Richard Donner was fired, he rewrote many of the scenes so in his movie version (which was the actual theatrical version) this never happened. But when fans got wind that Donner had actually shot nearly 80% of both movies before the Salkinds fired him they began to clamor for the unfinished Donner version of this movie. The only place you’ll actually see this scene is in the Donner cut of Superman 2. You have die hard fans in both camps. I was just 10 or so when Superman 2 came out and was unaware that there was any “back room” tension. I never knew all of the ins and outs of the making of this film. Once Donner agreed to try to assemble his version of Superman 2 to the best of his ability after so many years had passed, it was put out I think somewhere in 2006. This was the opening scene of the movie. He also had a different way in which Lois discovered Clark was Superman. And there were other scenes originally shot but ignored by Lester in his version that made much more sense. Especially the explanation as to how Clark regained his powers to become Superman again. And the final conversation between Superman and Lois when they talk at the Fortress of Solitude and then he drops her off at her apartment, with one more brief conversation about how they can’t be together because of the danger it puts Lois in. Lester leaves out that conversation yet leaves in the scene of Lois in tears with her back to Superman right before he flies away. Maybe we can infer what that was about in Lester’s version, but in the Donner cut we are left with no doubt.
Obviously the most controversial of all in the Donner cut was the decision for Superman to spin the world backwards and reverse time as the ending to Donner’s Superman 2 (since it was the filmed ending to part 1). And even in that scene we get new footage. It does cause a clash, to be sure. But Donner explained that this was always the ending he had in mind for part 2 and was coming up with a completely different ending to the first one before the Salkinds made him rush the first movie to the theaters ahead of what he was prepared to do. His explanation, which is pieced together as Superman 2 “the Donner Cut” begins, was that he intended on Superman throwing the missile released by Lex Luthor into space and it would shatter the glass prison that Zod and company were in, releasing them and the last scene we see was the three villains heading to Earth. The footage was shot but wasn’t complete for the ending of part 1. When Donner agreed to “Frankenstein” part 2 together years later he made that part of the summary of part 1 leading in as a sort of “introduction” to part 2. There are fans of his version and there are definitely fans of the Lester version. I like them both, but maybe because of the excitement of a good bit of extra footage in Donner’s cut, I fall down on the side that prefers Donner’s Superman 2 to Lester’s. There’s even a deleted scene in the Donner cut that explains why Clark goes back to the diner and handles the bully at the end of the movie.

Richard Donner directed the original '78 Superman film & most of Superman II until he was replaced mid-way. The new director (Richard Lester) basically altered Donner's vision, removing scenes & filming new scenes, releasing the theatrical version of Superman II. However, for many years fans wanted to see what the original movie & scenes were supposed to be. The original director's version was later released around 2006, known as the Richard Donner cut.

I had read and seen all the interviews saying it was because Donner kept arguing with the Salkinds about the budget and when they'd be done, etc. Donner wanted this to the amazing and the Salkinds were cheap. Donner was never even given an actual "budget"....but I read today that Mario Puzo wanted to explore the sexual side of Clark and Lois and wanted them to sleep together. Donner balked and Puzo won? This is what I read. I think it's more the budget and fighting and the Salkinds wanted their pal Richard Lester in the project anyway...but it's just so nuts. I still love the theatrical release, even if the Salkinds screwed over Donner in making it.
