Superman seems to be an easy role to nail but Clark Kent is the difficult role.
Agreed. Henry Cavill was terrific as superman - had the body, hair, eyes, smile but he just wasn't a good Clark Kent. His Clark Kent felt like it was all about Lois...
Roy Batty He’s a good Clark as well!
Cavill is a horrible Clark Kent... Cavill's Clark Kent is the same as superman. There needs to be a distinction between Clark Kent and Superman; in Reeves' case, he is confident as superman and nerdy/weak as Clark Kent. Henry Cavill is plays a badass Clark Kent and Superman which doesn't fit well. Clark Kent=Disguise to fit into society, Superman=Superior to average being
Roy Batty It’s sometimes hard for me to respect someone else’s opinion when I don’t agree with them about these kind of things, but I’ll respect your opinion
@@roybatty9663 Cavill made Kent an actual human, not a caricature. Anyone who thinks he's a bad Clark should give MoS a second chance, he's great.

Best comment of all time. I needed this.
🤣
I like that Reeves had an entirely different set of facial expression for playing Clark Kent. It really sold the idea that his simple disguise could work when combined with his superhuman intellect.
But Superman doesn't have super human intelligence.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 He actually does. He can think faster than super computers and can read through several books a minute.
From DC wiki: "Superman possessed genius-level intelligence and an eidetic memory. These enhanced mental capabilities were a direct result of his exposure to a yellow sun, as evidenced by the depiction of Superman's dog, Krypto. While under a yellow sun, Krypto's intelligence was boosted to that of a typical human."
@@StudioMod No he doesn't.
If he did he'd be smarter than Bruce. Which he isn't.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 That’s because writers don’t like to show Clark’s intelligence outside of his own books. Anything that can steal Batman’s thunder they squash. Whether or not Supes ends up out of character or incompetent is not their concern.
Chris was a genius actor. It really sucks that he spent the rest of his life in a chair after that accident.

well he also couldn't do that anyways with the whole secret identity thing
That is Superman for you.
@@ryanhoxie Yea is for justice , honuur and peace
That's the essence of Superman. Superman is not vengeful or aggressive in his actions, like other superheroes. He is about justice while encouraging people to change for the better. Because Superman has faith in humanity, perhaps more than we have in ourselves
@@Ladybhive71 Truth, justice, and the American way!
I remember thinking: "glasses? Really? That's how you hide your identity?". But now we all know he doesn't need to where a mask. The role of Clark Kent is his mask, and it's very effective.
They're both the mask
I'm pretty sure it's a combination of factors. The glasses obscure his eyes, yes, but he also walks slightly hunched over, to appear smaller and nonthreatening. His appearance, short hair, 3 piece black suit, is designed to be forgettable. He's less confrontational, more reserved, shy. All in all, without facial recognition software, most people would probably struggle to make the connection between Clark and Superman
@@DoctorKidemonas For a little while. Then when figure it out they'll start demanding he do everything for them 24/7 around the world.
It’s the other way around, he wasn’t raised as Superman, he was raised as Clark Kent, he uses Superman as a way to help people

Yeah, you don't see Henry Cavill play him like that. What a bore his Superman and Clark Kent is.
Henry’s superman was fine with me. It’s just he has a low interaction with humans other than his parents and Lois
@@GetToDaChoppa-k5r Its not really a bore id rather see that clark kent then the original nerdy clark kent, Henry Cavill played a pretty unique clark kent.
I just love how clumsy yet humble christopher reeves puts into this character. It makes my heart melt everytime. R.I.P
It's amazing how frigging cool Superman is when they aren't trying to make him edgy.
Dante'sApprentice I mean what is he supposed to be happy about in BvS? The whole world hates him, there’s a bat vigilante out there, his mother gets kidnapped etc. He isn’t “edgy” in Man of Steel but he is in BvS when it makes sense but Justice League is when he becomes the Superman we know and love is how Snyder described it.
@@theinvictussamaritan4778 Completely agree.
@@theinvictussamaritan4778 You're missing the point. The point is Snyder and company chose to focus on the bad side of life, so every other moment in the movies is tragedy and turmoil which gives Clark very little reason to ever be happy and upbeat about anything. A Superman movie can be just about anything, they could have even found a way to make the movie have more than one tone. I mean if Star Wars can have a few funny, light hearted moments even with planets being blown up and aunts and uncles being incinerated, Superman can too.
I'm not even a fan of the comics and even I've grown tired of seeing Superman being feared for his power and somehow being corrupted by Joker. Can't we have a Superman movie where it's actually fun to be around him, like you know, him being kinda like the cool teacher everyone likes? All optimistic and having an excellent sense of responsibility, instead of aggresively foreshadowing him becoming evil every few seconds?
That’s his appeal.
Why I love Christopher Reeve Superman. Clark the nerd comes first. He has power but dials it down to make people feel comfortable then cranks it up when he needs to.. cause he's at his core Nice.
Until he crushes Zod's hand and murders him by throwing him into a bottomless pit...

Clark the nerdy jock. He was an all-star quarterback.
I know it’s a joke that Supe’s disguise is pretty weak (one pair of glasses, really?), but I think Reeve did a remarkable job of selling Clark as a totally different entity than Superman
MisterTwister thing is the glasses are the whole disguise, if you read the comics, those are not a regular pair of glasses, when clark put them on, people are not capable to recognize him, read about it bro!
@@OscarAbrahamRodriguez Doesn't it make him appear more slouched and such to the people because they were made with shards of his rocket right?
There is a scene where Clark takes off his glasses and transform into Superman to tell the truth to Lois. It's impressive. Check it out.
@@OscarAbrahamRodriguez I saw something also about that Superman stands like 6'4 but purposely slouched his posture and manipulates his vocal cords to sound more "geeky/timid" to sell the "Clark" disguise.
No name yess, read about that is really interesting
SUCH GREAT ACTING HERE -- by both actors. Kidder's mild disgust with Clark after he "fainted" is perfect, and Reeve's ability to let the Superman sunshine through in the fourth-wall break and then when he purposefully exits after "guessing" the contents of Lois' purse are just magical. Truly. BRAVO, Both! 💙
Christopher Reeve is such a legend, he was able to play a scared, dorky, nerd to a confident brave, badass all in the same role
This is why Christopher Reeves Superman was the best

Meanwhile Cavill was an actual reporter investigating the bat vigilante and trying to put all the pieces together. Like what his actual job is supposed to be.
Same with Lois. She actually drives the plot forward in MOS and BvS by doing actual investigative journalism and not just a screaming damsel in distress for the entire movie.
Cavill/Adams was better than Reeve/Kidder
This is why Christopher Reeve is the best Superman ever. He plays the bumbling Clark Kent wonderfully and is perfect as Superman. Love the little look at the camera when Lois leaves
Watching this film again, you notice that Christopher Reeve changes his mannerisms entirely when he plays Clark Kent, even changes his posture to one that is kind of slumped and more meek in appearance. As Superman, he stands up straight with his shoulders back. Reeve was a classically trained actor and a stage actor as well. He really played the character exceptionally
Lois: *kicks him* AHA NOW FOR MY ESCAPE
Lois: *smacks straight into a wall*
I never noticed that before. She just stood there waiting to get shot in the back. The director really should have come up with something else. She could have at least tripped on something while trying to run away and Clark/Supes could still have caught the bullet.
She probably tried to kick his gun. That was my takeaway. She failed.
1978
I love that Clark steps in front of Lois before he remembers that he's supposed to be "mild-mannered". I love that Lois kicks the mugger in the face - her character has never been portrayed as a coward. And I love that Clark grins as he looks at the bullet in his palm - he enjoys playing Clark!
I'm surprised how this old movie goes against the cliché of women being weak and vulnerable like how society normally think of and expect from them.
@@victuzBecause their definition of weak is physically weaker than a man. They don't know what real strength is.

You directed the "heck" out of this and, along with the impeccable Christopher Reeve, gave us an indelible impression of the Man of Steel who had a gentle heart.

Christopher was pure magic from his first superman film to the last. Us kids didn't think any of the films were bad. He made them great for us no matter what the filming conditions were. 😢
My favorite part of Superman: The Movie: he doesn't throw a single punch. Excepting the scene in which he lifts Lex by his collar--demanding the location of the nuclear detonation device--his number one priority is saving people. Even in the second movie--when he fights much more--he's sure to protect the citizens of Metropolis from the destruction caused by the battle. It's what makes Superman Superman.
Christopher Reeves is one of the best Supermans. He makes this character charming as well as plays a good Clark Kent.
He will be remembered forever
Margot Kidder had natural talent.
When he put the gun away with his finger....hilarious.
To this day, the abiding genius of Reeve remains his ability to convincingly portray both Superman and Clark Kent as distinctively different characters, and seamlessly switch between the two. No other actor, for any superhero role, have ever come close.
Routh did a pretty good honoring Reeves legacy even if the movie itself was terrible.
1978
No one can touch Christopher Reeve superman. He was an icon who didn’t require the extra Hollywood gimmicks to play his role.

Christopher Reeves was and always will be superman . Nobody does it better .
One of the best scenes I’ve ever scene
Christpher Reeve’s characters have real almost tangible personality. New action heroes are just aggressive egoistic show-offs. This superman always put the power of human kindness before muscles and violence and that’s why he will always be #1 for me!
This is exactly why "the superman effect" works so well. There's no way anyone would ever believe it, even when they can clearly see that Clark is Superman.

Clark Kent was unrecognizable as Superman because Clark Kent played his role well as a goofy Clark Kent...
Unlike the other Underwhelming actors there after that didn't get it...
Superman returns and Man of Steel had two actors that didn't understand that you have to separate Clark Kent from Superman by betraying Clark as a geeky goofy nerd...
Christopher Reeve understood that and that's why he's the best that ever did it...
But I think Brandon Routh's Clark was still better than Henry's Clark. Routh's Clark had that nervous bumbling character, but he didn't get much screen time, if I recall....Superman had much more things to do. it's been a long time since I watched it. Such an underappreciated movie
