As a kid my favourite scene was Superman flying up to catch Lois falling, but now as an adult - this is my fave. No special effects or CGI can create this kind of onscreen chemistry. Its magic has not aged a single day.
We did. The theater I first saw it in was packed opening night. That line got a laugh and the "truth, justice..." line received a round of applause and cheering of recognition from the appreciative audience.
I think the line is flawed because of the American Way part, it just seems like it's saying the rest of the world is wrong and America is right when that just clearly is not always the case. I like the truth and justice parts though. The line in my opinion should be something like this, "Truth, Justice, and the Hero's Way".
This was absolutely PURE magic. No CGI, no slick gimmicks. Just two professionals creating an image that will stand the test of time. To this day, the best pairing in the history of this genre. Rest In Peace Lois And Clark.
This scene doesn't focus much on them, but the film's fx were supposed to be groundbreaking for the time. The tagline was "You will believe a man can fly". Admittedly, though, all that wouldn't've amounted to much without the perfect casting, the wonderfully nuanced performances, the sharp, witty writing, the compelling action, the gripping pacing & the indelible score. Deserving of its place in The National Film Registry.
@Starscream91 you don't get it because you have no EQ. Anyone with EQ would get anything It's not about the content. It's about the context AND IT'S A FLIRT JOKE. SRSLY NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. That's why Lois laughs. What are you schizoid? Pretend to laugh haha
Every woman on Earth can totally relate to Lois’ reactions to Superman during this scene, especially at times where she gets breathless and kinda spaces out because everything about him makes her feel speechless. I love that feeling; the way someone makes you totally melt and you look at them all dreamy-eyed as if they are the only man on Earth. *happy sigh*
I hear ya! If you are Elvis, Beatles or Sup...that tends to happen. The rest of us kick rocks. I legit have no idea what you are talking about, but it sounds grand!
This scene is absolutely beautiful. This scene was telling us everything about Superman that most of us didn’t know before. Superman is the most human character in superhero history. He’s not just a guy with amazing powers. He’s a kryptonian who grew up in Kansas who turned into a man with a good heart.
They remove the red underwear in 2017 because it looks 'dated'. It's no less inherently silly here, but it works because Reeve was 100% confident in that outfit. Look at that Superman. Look. Now RESPECT.
They are circus acrobat tights so he can be more agile as stated in an early issue of Superman. I think the line went something like this "Donning the dress of a circus acrobat.......
This is without question one of the greatest romantic interactions in any film ever simply due to the skill and chemistry between the two main performers. Most other actors would struggle to act out this scene in a way an audience would believe, but both Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder are so sincere in their inflections and in their awkward pauses that you totally want to see them end up together. From the beginning of this clip, to the classic flying scene, to the moment Clark takes off his glasses and hesitates to tell Lois the truth is one of my favorite scenes in any film ever.
Comme vous avez raison. J'ai vu cette scène la première fois au cinéma en 1978. J'avais 9 ans et j'étais tombé sous le charme de ce duo inoubliable. Tout est si précieux dans cette longue scène 🙏❤🙏
This scene would've been cringey af. But Christopher and Margot nailed it. He can say all this boy scout and super power stuff based dialogue in THAT bright spandex outfit in full character and confidence. First time I've fully watched this scene and I love it, every scene I watch with Reeve's Superman/Clark Kent puts a big smile on my face
He's really good about that. Like in Superman III, sitting in the living room with Lana. He makes it all seem natural, even in an old fashioned superhero costume.
@@ChadKakashi I didn’t grow up on this film and it played no significant part of my childhood so there’s no nostalgia for me here. It’s just genuinely good and charming
Aren't you basically saying the script was bad, and that it was just barely pulled off to not be bad simply because of two specific actors that you apparently like?
It's always touches me when two people are madly in love with each other and yet try to keep it to themselves. It makes for some really tender and funny moments and brings out the vulnerable child in all of us. Lois facial expression at 3:58 is so sweet and both of them had such great chemistry together. They play this scene perfectly with just enough innocence and naughty innuendos to convey how crazy they are about each other.

All the blatant innuendo went right over my head when I was a kid, such as... "How big are you? I mean, how tall?!" lol. I think I would have giggled or felt embarrassed at the underwear question though!

One of the reasons Reeve sold his performance so well was his ease of movement; he goes from flying to standing and jumps down from that wall so naturally. He looks so comfortable with himself, as you would expect of a hero with the best physical prowess in the world; even the little cape-flick as he sits down is incredibly convincing. The skyline looks fake, the costume looks like a leatord. YET this is one of the greatest comic book scenes of all time. Why? Because the character work and dialogue are so strong they make every single comic movie today look pedestrian. My god I love the MCU but this is timeless. If they could catch a single ounce of the magic that happened during this scene it would just be incredible.
[STARS]TyranT It was the late 70’s so yeah they skyline looks dated but if you saw this as a kid you were blown away especially when he saves Lois from the helicopter and flies away from her on the roof I still prefer this over Snyder’s wet flat looking CGI with that Batmobile bouncing and hopping like a toy car with no real weight .
He was so hot, those stunning blue eyes were so piercing against that sleek dark hair. The way he used to stare at Louis like she was the only girl in the world. That would make any girl melt! The OST of John Williams really makes these scenes so memorable and tranports us back in time, It truely was a masterpiece. The whole movie was a mix of comedy and action along with those emotional heartfelt scenes that ran throughout the course of the whole film. They sure dont make movies like this anymore. Such great chemistry from both of these fine actors, rest in peace to both of them.
From time to time I dye my hair from blonde to jet black as I am an Irish American 25 year old tall thin young man, and I have blue eyes to resemble Christopher Reeve, as he my #1 role model in addition to Robert Downey Jr. , Chris Evans, and Bradley Cooper.
Around the time this movie was out, I read that, upon being discovered, Reeve wasn't much of a muscle man, but the studios/ casting agents, etc. saw the jet-black hair, square jaw & steel-blue eyes & said something along the lines of "Don't worry, kid. We'll sew foam rubber muscles into your Superman suit." However, Reeve was dedicated & thankful enough that he spent several months "gulping protein & pumping iron" (as the article I read put it) &, by the time production started, his body was just as prepared as his face.
What makes Christopher Reeve work this scene and throughout the movie is when he says, "I never lie." I was 24 when this movie came out and to me it has never been equaled.
2:31-I always liked the sly little smile Superman gives here as Lois gets up from the table, showing that although he played dumb when she asked the questions, he knew exactly what she meant when she asked "How big are you?" and "Do you.....eat?".

Dear Zack Snyder.....see....this is called CHEMISTRY between your leads. Two good looking people don't automatically equate to that. This scene is perfect. It's patient, charming and romantic all at once, while never being so heavy handed that it loses sight of its innocence or sense of fun.
Guy Johnson I kinda felt the same about the leads in the Wonder Woman movie, zero chemistry, just so flat. Even Lynda Carter & Lyle Waggoner had better chemistry in the 70s TV series, despite not really developing the romance further.
The super power Christopher Reeve gives to Superman is super humanity, his Superman is so human, so human that he can be human for the entire human race. No other actor could replicate that so far.

I just love how, Lois Lane is this big time tough ass reporter with such a confident & cocky attitude...HOWEVER, right in this moment when she, “Spends The Night With Superman”, she just automatically becomes this little school girl with a huge crush and that tough exterior of hers just crumbles & falls down! She just becomes SO vulnerable!! I love it!!
It sort of helps to know Lois was being rude to Clark when he arrived to the Planet, but when Clark asked the chief to send money to his mother and Lois noticed he was being sincere, she started to behave better with him and even asked if Clark knew more people like himself. Since automatically Superman has this trait of caring for his mother, obviously Lois would fall for a caring, nice, respectfull and strong will man. Is a shame Superman has to behave like Clark Kent in front of her.
@@Yorcont Her relationship with the Clark persona, shows she's not suited for him, though he's already fallen for her. I like his high school crush, Lana Lang, in _Superman III._ She likes Clark, both as who he presents himself to be and who she remembers he was. So I guess I "ship" those two.
This is still one of the best scene among all the superman movies. I fell in love with both of them when I first watched the movie in the late 70's ! RIP both of You!
It was very endearing. Watching scenes from Superman II, she admits she was mean to Clark but not why. She doesn't say she loves him after he gives up his powers. Also, the idea she couldn't handle his secret at work, and had to be hypnotized to forget is disturbing. Jimmy learned his secret in _Supergirl._ Did he freak out and have to be kissed?
I love the moment after he says “truth, justice and the American way” and Lois kind of scoffs at it. Her reaction is exactly how we as the audience would’ve if we were there. What he said is so naive and old school that we see it as super cheesy. But it’s just so earnest and good that it almost feels like an alien concept after how cynical we’ve become. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but still a detail I love
It doesn't surprise me even back then the "American way" part would get poked at. Dude is from another planet, his kindness extends beyond country borders after all. ;P
No disrespect to other actors who have attempted to play SM but Chris Reeve outshines them all. It just worked including his chemistry with the screen and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. They were going for epic and delivered. If you haven't, you've got to see the deleted scenes of Brando/Jor-el in Superman II. Those scenes were worth the price of admission to a director's cut.
The strength of this scene is its humanity. Two people who clearly like each other, alone together for the first time. Full with all that awkward dialogue as they try to quell both their own nerves, and that of the person with them.

I think the line is flawed because of the American Way part, it just seems like it's saying the rest of the world is wrong and America is right when that just clearly is not always the case. I like the truth and justice parts though. The line in my opinion should be something like this, "Truth, Justice, and the Hero's Way".

This scene is absolutely beautiful. This scene was telling us everything about Superman that most of us didn’t know before. Superman is the most human character in superhero history. He’s not just a guy with amazing powers. He’s a kryptonian who grew up in Kansas who turned into a man with a good heart.
He started out more simplistically.

It’s still cringey. I’m not blinded by nostalgia and I think the dialogue is cringe but it’s really endearing because of it.
Really cute scene.
@@ChadKakashi I didn’t grow up on this film and it played no significant part of my childhood so there’s no nostalgia for me here. It’s just genuinely good and charming

It's always touches me when two people are madly in love with each other and yet try to keep it to themselves. It makes for some really tender and funny moments and brings out the vulnerable child in all of us. Lois facial expression at 3:58 is so sweet and both of them had such great chemistry together. The skyline looks fake, the costume looks like a leatord. YET this is one of the greatest comic book scenes of all time. Why? Because the character work and dialogue are so strong they make every single comic movie today look pedestrian. My god I love the MCU but this is timeless. He was so hot, those stunning blue eyes were so piercing against that sleek dark hair. The way he used to stare at Louis like she was the only girl in the world. That would make any girl melt! From time to time I dye my hair from blonde to jet black as I am an Irish American 25 year old tall thin young man, and I have blue eyes to resemble Christopher Reeve, as he my #1 role model in addition to Robert Downey Jr. , Chris Evans, and Bradley Cooper.

Superman had a bad taste when it comes to woman. Lois looks like a female Ringo Starr.

this movie was out,
I read that, upon being discovered,
Reeve wasn't much

casting agents, etc.
saw the jet-black hair,
square jaw & steel-blue eyes
& said something along the lines
of "Don't worry, kid.
We'll sew foam rubber muscles
into your Superman suit."
However, Reeve was dedicated
& thankful enough
that he spent several months
"gulping protein & pumping iron"
(as the article I read put it)
&, by the time production started,
his body was just as
prepared as his face.

How can the same thing be said about the Batman movies?
How is she vulnerable
God, he was such a handsome man!

This scene is pure magic and quite frankly, I think this may be the perfect summary of Superman as a character
Dude is from another planet, his kindness extends beyond country borders after all. ;P
My gosh was he ever so handsome!! 😍❤️
she's so hot 😍
Lacy Warfield from Superman 4 was hot.
No disrespect to other actors who have attempted to play SM but Chris Reeve outshines them all. It just worked including his chemistry with the screen and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. SM MUST be 6ft 4, to begin with. Not many actors could pull off wearing the SM costume including the eloquent way Chris worked this scene. The first SM movie was and remains the best.
@robert Johnson that and good director. Imagine if donner made 3 and 4?shame they never got married in movie
@@paulsmith9192 _Superman II_ wasn't hurt too much by Donner's firing; it was deleting/replacing Brando's scenes that hurt it. However _Superman III_ was a disaster (other than scenes with Lana) without him. We didn't need a Luthor wannabe but an antagonist like Brainiac or Bizarro.
Omg...he was soooo handsome. . Those eyes are hypnotic
Classic scene. "I spent the night with Superman" :)
One of the greatest acting in film history. Every word, every glitter of the eyes... absolute talent.
My god this character is an absolute dream 🤩 his looks, perfect body, charming facial expression, his eyes, perfectly groomed hair, and specially his humble personality makes him irresistible.
Oh yeah well, does he know how to play Fornite hmm? I rest my case.
1977
Man, i cant put into words how perfect this scene is. Catches the essence of Superman perfectly. God i miss Christopher Reeve he is and will always be the GOAT.
Reeves and Kidder had such great chemistry in this movie. So sad they left this world too soon.
both beautiful
1977
The part where he leans in and looks at her with those intense blue eyes is wonderful.....a girl could get lost in those eyes...lol....Love this scene... "I like pink very much Lois"😊😛 Rest In Peace Christopher💜 and Margot ~
Is no one else going to talk about how ahead of their time this script and performances are? This is a beautiful example of understanding the source material, taking it seriously, and creating iconic cinema.
They were going for epic and delivered. If you haven't, you've got to see the deleted scenes of Brando/Jor-el in Superman II. Those scenes were worth the price of admission to a director's cut.
Absolutely not.
This scene is one of many reasons this movie is so magical.
The strength of this scene is its humanity. Two people who clearly like each other, alone together for the first time. Full with all that awkward dialogue as they try to quell both their own nerves, and that of the person with them.
Every single damn executive at Warner Brothers needs to be put into a room, have their computers and cell phones taken, the lights turned out,and made to watch this to remember this is how you make a superhero movie. Great dialogue and great actors that effect the moviegoers in positive ways. People are made to believe a man could fly today because of special effects, with Reeves Superman it was because of acting. Warner Brothers have forgotten what they originally created 40 years ago...
Acting is good, not I believe you can fly past the age of 5 good though.
Gosh i am dieing of laughter 🤣🤣
Just imagining that 🤞

Exactly. The executives over at WB Pictures have no idea how much potential these characters have. And it's strange because the WB Animation Group actually have a general idea.
Yes Michael (Jackson? ;):) ) Mccollum..
