    This is what truly made Superman a *super* man. He isn't just incredibly strong he is incredibly smart too. And since he faced three villains all of which equalled him in strength him outsmarting them - by knowing Lex Luthor would rat him out - this was what made him a true hero. The audience too believed Superman's last hope was gone when Lex Luthor revealed his "plan". Great surprise and a new level of respect for the character.
    He is more than just a "strong man" - his real strength lies in his character - this is something many fail to realize.

      ***** Nope there are no other intentions of falling down an "endless" ice slope but death. Superman could have thrown them in jail since they had no powers. It really just shows the hypocrisy of fans who support this over MOS death ending.
      One is just more realistic than the other.

      Earnest Young Well yes he could have thrown them in jail, I suppose, but that wouldn't have been as satisfying to the audience. Whether it's seeing the baddie get shot at the end of a western or blown up at the end of a Bond movie, movie audiences just want to know that the villain "got theirs". Remember that both MOS and Superman II are just movies, nobody dies for real. Take a chill pill.

      Superman didn't actually intend to grab Luthor. Superman's plan needed another person outside to activate the molecular chamber, since he couldn't do it while being inside the chamber. Lois couldn't do it because she was restrained by Ursa. So he needed someone from Zod's army to do it.
      Superman confided with Luthor of his fake plan because he knew Luthor would betray him to Zod. Then Zod would believe Zod had the upper hand, and "force" Superman to enter the chamber, or suffer the consequences (the death of Lois). And when Zod activated the chamber (or asked someone else - Luthor - to activate the chamber) that was exactly what Superman needed to complete his actual plan.
      So he was basically acting, pretending like he was betrayed by Luthor, when that was his actual plan all along. Do you really believe that he couldn't grab Luthor if he really wanted to?

    This must have been from the Richard Donner cut that was released in 2006; I don't recall Zod telling Ursa to kill Lois in the original theatrical release from 1980. And the bit where Supes explains the molecule chamber to Luthor isn't in this clip, but is in the version I have on disc. Good thing I asked for the Donner cut of Superman 2 for my birthday; I have a feeling I'mma be in for a treat with this one. And I know probably every Superman fangirl from the late 70s to early 80s has said this, but Chris Reeve made the most beautiful Superman ever! And he was easy on the eyes in real life, too. And I hear not only was he a good looking man, he was a good man period. The current Superman actor Henry Cavill is handsome too, but I don't know what kind of man he is, and what kind of person one is matters more than one's physical appearance in my book. A man can be as gorgeous as an angel, but if he has a crap personality his looks don't mean anything.

    Two points:
    1) I get the impression that Superman himself was uncertain whether this was going to work. This explains why he came out hesitantly and "tested" his strength by attempting to crush Zod's hand. Otherwise no reason to be dramatic and cute; just come out of the molecule machine and immediately start kicking butt. If he did know, seems pretty cruel to crush Zod's hand just for the heck of it.
    2) If this is a of transfer power, as it was in the case of Jor-el to turn Clark back into Superman, then this means Superman stole the power of the others and left him with not only his own strength but that of three others. So he ends up four times as strong!

    I am glad that Superman outsmarted Zod, Ursa, Non by playing Luthor into the plan.. I am glad he did not trust Luthor. Luthor is an double crosser and an lying weasel too who could never wait for the chance to do an double crossed.

    • @flatscan1978
      @flatscan1978  10 лет назад +3

      Sorry, I respectfully disagree. Why would Luthor believe that Superman would ever trust him, after all the things he did. And Zod, Non and Ursa have superhearing too.
      They would have heard Superman conspiring with Lex against them.
      Luthor already knew about the molecule chamber, because he was at the fortress before (and used the information crystals).
      Superman's initial plan was to get into the crystal chamber with Zod and depower Ursa and Non, increasing his chances to win.
      Luthor's interference gave him the opportunity to get rid of all three of them.

    • @rajithmaligaspe
      @rajithmaligaspe 9 лет назад +3

      flatscan1978 You could say that Luthor didn't go through all the crystals while he was there - He even skipped crystals to get to info about Zod.
      Also I think Superman played a huge hunch on assuming Zod would kill Luthor as well (which to me is predictable), and that hunch paid off.
      And if he were wrong I'm confused by (as you say) his original plan - he would lead the trio into the chamber, all three of them in that compact space, and then fight(?) in there, or jump out and close the chamber door before they had time to react and then quickly return the functionality to its original state so that the rays would now hit the chamber and not the rest of the fortress.

    • @flatscan1978
      @flatscan1978  9 лет назад +3

      *****
      I think Superman wanted to depower all three of them the moment they arrived in the fortress.
      He has reversed the process (bathing the whole fortress in red sun radiation instead of the crystal chamber) before their arrival.
      That's why Superman was in the chamber at the beginning of the scene, shielding himself from the red sun radiation.
      He never wanted anyone of them in the chamber with him.
      When he saw that Zod brought Lois as a hostage he settled for depowering Ursa and Nonn, to even the odds in his own favor.
      So he tried to lure Zod to come into the crystalchamber with him.
      It is easier to fight only one Kryptonian instead of three.

    I read an article this week that showed the actual attendance numbers comparing Man of Steel and Superman Returns. The article showed that there are more movie theaters throughout the world now than in 2006. Yet Man of Steel actually sold just a few thousand more tickets than Superman Returns despite being shown in more theaters. Man of Steel did bring in more money but when factoring in the rise in ticket prices since 2006, the reality is this. If ticket prices were still the same, Man of steel would have grossed little more than Superman Returns did. This becomes even more glaring when considering all the product placement in Man of Steel(IHOP,SEARS, 7-11, etc...) and the amount of marketing that was done for Man of Steel.

    • @lukecarroll4052
      @lukecarroll4052 10 лет назад +2

      Superman returns actually grossed a decent bit of money, it just wasn't as much as WB wanted, and it was critically received horribly, so they decided to reboot, I mean a movie like Man of Steel making over 600 million is not bad at all.

    This is the definitive version of SUPERMAN II, but for those who bitch about Superman killing General Zod, Lois killing Ursa and Non falling to his death, there is a deleted scene on the DVD of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut which shows the villains being arrested. The scenes are sans director commentary, so we do not know why the director chose to cut them, but as the film stands, it's better without those scenes.

      Okay, this is the answer. Superman had reversed the chamber, so he'd be protected inside while the red rays are on outside. He pretends to go through pains to make it seem like he is being drained of his powers. The villains don't feel it because maybe Superman set it up that they won't notice it, or when you don't know it is happening to you, you won't feel it. Superman must've also set it up that he and the villains do not change clothes, like he did the first time. Lex doesn't notice this because he doesn't know how the thing works and Lois is too busy crying thinking Superman is defeated that she didn't notice the red rays outside, nor that nobody's clothes were changed. Ursa is just holding Lois but maybe not that tight, so nothing changed there. They are just standing still, so gravity doesn't mean anything to them, and also, the place was not cold so they wouldn't feel any temperature changes.

      @@sha11235 That's a lot of explaining and giving the benefit of the doubt. If it were possible to adjust the device so that it didn't cause pain and change clothes then why was it not set up that way in the first place? Was Kal-El a sadist? No, this was just done as a means to provide a little dramatic twist at the end of the film. It's lazy writing, and didn't give the audience any credit. The initial transformation was done with the changing of the clothes and the pain to show us the sacrifice Superman was making, and to see the cost to him physically and symbolically. Then, when the writers wanted a surprise twist ending with suspense, they discarded all that and assumed the audience wouldn't notice.

      Agreed they were more ruthless and I believe you see zod and them being arrested and taken away in that cut I think

    The music isn't right in this version. The release version had better music at this point.

      ***** ***** I'm talking about the musical aspect of this bit, especially at 4:05 onwards. It's much better in the release version. Listen to it.

    First half was not brooding melodrama, It was The destruction of krypton, Kal-els departure, Zod becoming the main villain, showing the phantom zone engine, showing clarks travels as he finds himself, a few flashbacks of his childhood of how his life was with his powers, learning about wht he is, saving the bully, and later on the bully helps him and becomes his friend, the death of pa kent, introducing lois, supes findng the ship, becoming superman, then zod comes, and its Krypton vs Superman

    “And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.”
    Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996.
    What a Super Man.

    There's actually a certain kind of charm in the way that Christopher Reeve lifts actor Terence Stamp into the air at 4:04 and it's obvious Stamp is on a waist harness with a wire . . no CGI back then but in a lot of ways it was actually better like that

      They also had a problem with Reeve's balls showing when he ran, so they had to make him a codpiece out of a rubber swimmer's cap.

    I saw Margot Kidder at a Superstar Mega Show in West York, New Jersey 15 years ago and got an autographed picture of her. It was a nice experience, even if I'm not a SUPERMAN fan.
