  • Random Access Memories by Daft Punk is one of my favourite albums of all time and it feels wrong that I have not sat down to listen to this monumental piece by the French Duo. This week we sat down with the electronic album "Discovery" which begins with the monster dance hit "One More Time" Truth be told I was feeling a bit flat the week I recorded this vid so to chuck this one on at the end of the day was just the spark I needed to shift my perspective. Albums like this remind me of the power of music.
    My name is Jack and I love music, in particular Hip Hop, I decided to make this channel as a way to engage with other music lovers and because there doesn't seem to be a lot of reaction channels on RUclips...My goal has always been to be open to all types of music regardless of my love of Hip Hop, on this channel you can expect a rich array of genres. If you're keen to join me on my music journey then please subscribe, if you ever want to give your thoughts on an album or song that I have reacted to, then please do. I want this channel to be a community and if you love music of any genre then welcome!!!

    That flute sound in Face to Face haunted fans for years because no one could find the sample until like a year ago, and the last sample was found a few months ago. Also the singer is Todd Edwards who also sings Fragments of Time from Random Access Memories.

    I think one of the most underrated, under-mentioned parts of One More Time is how they leave the breath in between each vocal cut, makes it sound more like a robot, because humans cant take breaths while singing lol.... I always loved their decision to leave those in.

    • @cavemanjack
      @cavemanjack  4 месяца назад

      totally agree

    • @pc_buildyb0i935
      @pc_buildyb0i935 Месяц назад +1

      The vocal overlapping is moreso responsible for the feel, rather than just the breaths themselves. The robotic-ness is mainly coming from the AutoTune and the overlapping vocal lines - each line was recorded separately, so that they could be overlapped. For example, at 3:09, that first "One More Time!" call has an exhale at the end of it, but the "we're" in "we're gonna celebrate" happens at exactly the same time as the exhale does, which is the part that isn't humanly possible. Ditto for both "Oh yeah", "alright" and "don't stop the dancing".
      You also hear it for the last 32 bars of the track, with the "One More Time" line overlayed with the "music" from "music's got me feeling so free".
      Interesting sidenote, there's also a dotted eighth-note delay and a phaser, but both are set pretty low in the mix.

    Jack, you for sure need to check out Homework and Human After All. Either as a video or on your own time, purely so you're prepped for the masterpiece that is Alive 2007. @@cavemanjackReally it is. Alive 2007 is orgasmic to say the least, it is such a magical album. When you hear all the albums that came before and see all the songs being mashed up in such a new and genius way really changes your perspective on the original songs. The style of sampling in Face To Face is largely the work of Todd Edwards, who popularized that style of chopping up bits of various songs to create new melodies.

    It's funny you mention it's like they gave Julian Casablancas a really robotic voice - because they literally had him sing into a vocoder for the song "Instant Crush" on their last album, "Random Access Memories".

    • @pc_buildyb0i935

    • @mulrich

      @@mulrich It's well established that people say it's a vocoder. So is the confusion between AutoTune, vocoders, harmonizers, and talk boxes. But I've heard the track, and I have both a harmonizer and a vocoder in my equipment rack.
      They're using a harmonizer on Casablanca. It would make no sense to credit him as a vocalist, because vocoders don't capture modulator timbre, just carrier timbre. There'd be no reason to use Casablancas on the vocals because it only takes the spectral shifting (specifically pronunciation of vowels and consonants) of the modulator and no other characteristics. If it was a vocoder, Daft Punk may as well have done it themselves.

    • @mulrich
      @mulrich Месяц назад

      @@pc_buildyb0i935 you can sing into a vocoder, which is what was done for "Instant Crush". There's also literally an example of Pharrell Williams doing it as a test for "Lose Yourself to Dance" in the extras for the 10th anniversary edition of RAM.
      "Among the most consistent users of the vocoder in emulating the human voice are Daft Punk, who have used this instrument from their first album Homework (1997) to their latest work Random Access Memories (2013) and consider the convergence of technological and human voice "the identity of their musical project". For instance, the lyrics of "Around the World" (1997) are integrally vocoder-processed, "Get Lucky" (2013) features a mix of natural and processed human voices, and "Instant Crush" (2013) features Julian Casablancas singing into a vocoder."

It covers a variety of different sounds, is under 1 hour and has some funny skits between all the tracks, probably the most digestible album from this genre I can think of for someone to react to.
    Genre-wise, you'd be looking at hardcore, breakbeat, rave and jungle, as well as some techno & trance, but paired with lots of hip hop influence. Would love to see you react to something off-the-wall like that.
