- Police on Long Island, New York, have taken a person into custody in connection with the murders of at least 10 women whose bodies were found on Gilgo Beach over 10 years ago. The body of Shannan Gilbert was first discovered on the beach. Police later ruled her death was not the result of a crime, but while investigators were searching for Gilbert, they found other remains. Erin Moriarty has been covering this story since 2011. This “48 Hours” episode aired on Dec. 12, 2020.

Props to 48 Hours because they BEEN on this case. I know Shannan is not included in the list if victims but she helped give this case more exposure.
If you have Prime, there is a docuseries called the Killing Season, or Killing Fields, and it dives DEEP into these murders. They call him LISK, long Island serial killer, but they believe there are more than one killers.

What’s wild is that years later Shannon Gilbert’s mom would be brutally killed by her other daughter Sarah. It’s so tragic. That family has been through so much and the continued trauma is just heart breaking. The sister that’s left has so much to heal inside herself and for the children she has and the one left behind.

Suzanne, I agree completely. Hard to imagine what life must be like to have a loved family member just disappear and then after a tortuous wait - end up dead. Just awful. I'm so glad they finally have some answers.

Maureen’s story is so sad. She was just trying to keep her apartment and her kid. Megan’s daughter is absolutely beautiful and seems like such a smart and mature girl. This is all just so sad. These were all normal girls that just mad bad choices out of desperation. You can tell they all had caring families, which is strange because a lot of the girls in this line of work don’t. I hope they finally get Justice. Shannan’s sister is the one I feel the worst for. She’s been through the most from Shannan being missing to her sister taking their mothers life. I hope she can heal.

Giving tax cuts to the wealthiest and major corporations instead of investing in every day families is a legislative mistake that our citizens keep voting. Trickle Down Economics has never worked for anyone but those at the top in its the entire history worldwide.

These true crime shows never seem to understand that people actually wait tables, work at convenience stores, bartend, baby sit, or sell sex, to MAKE money ... not to "make extra money," as they ALWAYS say. I think sometimes they ask questions that although are obvious are questions that they think enough people may be wondering. Smaller women are extra vulnerable. Combine small size with some risky business involving being alone with strangers, it’s very dangerous. Absolutely no one deserves to be murdered for it. I just hate hearing about women being victimized.

Shannon helped bring these ladies home. So glad an arrest was made today for 4 of the victims. So scary. Prostitution has been around before the Bible. What someone chooses to do for a job doesnt make them less important or that they dont matter because they are loved. They are missed. They are human. It could easily be YOUR sister, mother, friend,etc.

Rex Huermann just about as average looking guy, but who is also a serial killer. I don’t trust a stranger, even if they are nice and harmless looking. The ones that can blend well and seem harmless are the scariest.
ESPECIALLY if they are nice and/or harmless looking, what have we learned people? That everyone says- he seemed like a decent guy...and it could never happen here, so the ones that look most upstanding should be most suspect!

Sometimes our society doesn’t allow people to rehabilitate after mistakes. Like the girl with no license.. she was just trying to provide for her child with little options. Empathy is the answer here. Our society needs to change to help those in need. No one wants to do this. They feel forced, and are all still human.
Ive been on 2 County probation for 2 years. I had a wondeful attorney. Without him id be in jail. I had one of Floridas worst PO , that was dirty. Got paid to put me in 3x in 6months. Dirty!! I finished 2 year probation in 4 months. It didnt matter cuz he wanted more. They dont want you to be rehabilitated. They rather have you in a positjon, on the street. Turning tricks to pay them, and ive paid them 50k. On Disability. Sickening. ...when this is over. Id like to work and volunteer, but not in one place. Im leaving this County. All people need help but women need to help women. No other way. They have a womens shelter here called CASA. They male millions at a high end boutique, all donations. Then they dont have ANYTHING to give to any women who need it. 😢
Shannon’s mother is dead now. She was stabbed to death by her own other daughter. This case is just filled with tragedy.

This is so surreal… it feels like so long ago that I heard about this case for the first time, and in my teenage brain I just did not see how they would possibly ever find person who did this. But it looks like they really got him.. These women were NOT given up on or forgotten.

I'd like to say, as someone who was an active addict for the majority of my life, I have never heard of someone being high, on any kind of drugs, who imagined they were attacked, & fled & stripped off their clothes as they ran. Ridiculous.
Something definitely happened that scared Shannon so bad that she ran out into the marsh. But it was during winter and when people suffer from hyperthermia they start removing clothes bcuz they feel hot when really their freezing to death.
The cops finally released the entire 911 call that Shannon made that night, you can find it on RUclips. She definitely sounds intoxicated, but her bf, family, all say she wasn't a drug user. 🤔 She has an odd conversation with her driver during that 911 call. You should listen to it.

What this show conveniently and intentionally didn’t include was the fact that she was a paranoid schizophrenic who refused to take her medication. She employed a driver/bodyguard who was there that night and testified that the “John” didn’t do anything to her but she was flipping out on him. The “John” begged the driver to get her out of his house because the “date” was off. Her driver couldn’t control her and she ran off .
The only way she was killed by the serial killer is if he just happened to be in the exact spot in the marsh where she fled to. Possible but pretty unlikely.
Now that the killer has been found I’m doubtful that we’ll ever know the extent of his crimes simply because there’s no death penalty going to be in play in his trial. Were the death penalty in play it’s possible to offer a deal consisting of life without parole IF he comes clean and provides details of other missing prostitutes in the area.

Stop making excuses for these criminals. They have more choices than many, but still choose the path of prostitution. They are no different from drug pushers who also sell what certain people want for easy money without taxation and short working hours and who know the risks involved.

the clock is ticking for all these killers, as long as law enforcement kept the dna they found in tact, genetic genealogy will help solve a good number of these cases. On 07/13/2023 Rex Heuermann, an architect who had lived most of his life in Nassau County and worked in Manhattan, was taken into custody in connection with these killings.

As a former sex worker I can positively say that these girls absolutely deserve justice & I am CERTAIN that Rex Heuermann patronized these women. He may have only been charged in 3 deaths but I feel in my heart that he's responsible. He should have been stopped years ago!!!

So I was just reading the 32 page indictment and one of the victims - Costello apparently scammed Rex out of money by having him show up for their appt then staging a ruse in which a guy pretending to be her bf showed up causing Rex to leave. He then sent her a text message saying “ that’s not nice …” and then for god knows what reason the victim then decided to see him the next day and DIDN’T take her cellphone. It was this event in which his car was witnessed which leads us to today.

All of the people involved in this were degenerates. Every single one including the perpetrator.
She was a heroin addict and he offered her $1,500. She was much more than an addict and an escort, RIP Amber, but that's why she was willing to do something so insanely risky after scamming him the night before. The girls with serious addictions end up taking the worst risks, legally and/or safety-wise.

I know it's a low bar but I appreciate not demonizing sex workers. Idc what your morals are, theyre humans that often get seen as deserving of their treatment by society and it is just nice to see the humanity 48 hours and family/friends can bring in reminding us of that fact and shed light on it
Yes they are Sex workers, but you could also go cleaning instead of selling your body. Every woman knows, myself included, that having Sex and going with strange men home puts you at risk of getting murdered, its just how psychology works. Men do not respect Sex workers, they are an easy target to many psychopaths and I am sure you wouldnt be proud telling your daughter is selling her body or is a prostitute when speaking to other people about her. You would be 100 % prouder if she would earn her money in a decent way, even if it is building up a succesfull cleaning company. Before I started med school, I took cleaning jobs as I needed the money asap. I would never sell my body although I had NO money. Its about dignity and respect towards your own body and mental health. However, of course no one should be get murdered in any type of situation just because she puts herself at risk, but make smarter decisions for your life :/

My own BF doesnt take ME into account. Let alone my family. I've been studying psychology of mentally ill people, for years. I come from it. Im mentally ill (managed & therapy.) But there are types of people who DO NOT FEEL. Cliche that usually they were abused; but even with moments of empathy, they arent the same as us. Narcissists, Psychopaths, Sociopaths, BPD, ...watch Sam Vaknin and its eye opening how people really operate.

When I watched my mom take her last breath as she died of cancer, I felt a sort of relief that she wasn't in pain anymore. Especially since I knew the end was inevitable any moment hour or day. Not happy, just less distressed.

After learning about the Franklin Coverup of the 80’s, this case to me shows all the trademark signs of a blackmail ring involving very prominent people in that area and possibly even beyond that area.
It will likely never be “officially” solved for that very reason.

So many women who get trapped in that lifestyle have incredibly big hearts and genuinely loving spirits. Predators who hurt these women loathe themselves and envy the joy they will never have.

This case has always stuck with me, I am so happy he's finally been caught. Something still doesn't sit right with me about Shannon Gilbert tho, I do wonder if those people were really after her., according to all reports of the locals it appeared as tho they were.

I love it! After decades of investing and NEVER giving up, a killer is caught ! Just like Gary Ridgeway, Jeffrey Dahmer and Stephanie Lazarus (the LAPD cop) among others! It is awesome to hear and see how these cases come full circle. Good job Long Island NY!
What makes this even worse is
1. There could be more victims out there they haven't found yet and
2. The longer this killer is on the loose the longer they could be killing more people.
I really don't understand why law enforcement agencies have such a hard time working together. What matters is getting these monsters put away so they can't hurt anyone.

This did seem to take forever but law enforcement has to make sure that they have enough evidence to move forward with a solid case. Otherwise the arrest is for nothing and the guy will end up back on the streets.
I literally just read about this from the DailyMail,the crazy part is,I remember watching a crime documentary about these murders. Thank goodness,I am so happy they caught him,hopefully,it’s him!

When I saw the pictures of the area where the crimes happened it reminded me of the Netflix movie I saw called "lost girls" With Amy Ryan as the mom. Good movie of this real life tragedy.

Possibly. You could be right. Although BTK stopped for a long time to raise his family. So who knows.
@@christinap-c after reading more.. sounds like police were following him while he still engaged with sex workers.. sounds odd unless they were hoping that he would in fact lead them to a new dumping ground and possibly solve other missing person cases… there’s more to the story here we don’t know yet..

If the first death was a college student, this crime would’ve been solved within days.

I'm sure he is issued an apology- and the state also pays the person wrongly accused so he hopefully can use that money to set up a comfortable place to live while settling into living free again. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to get him back his missing freedom z
