Mmmm, touchy subject (to me at least). Yes - very fast. One of my mates wiped out on one chasing a CBR600 ridden by another mate. Permanent checkout. I didn't think it handled that great and maybe that was a factor. We'll never know.

my gut feel is that this is not the bike you should try to do 10 / 10ths on - eg like you wouldn't care if you were on an RC45 - forgivable handling etc. The engine on this thing overpowers what the bike is safe to do..... I didn't like it....

Bandit 1250S is the most beasty of any bike. It has like 100 ft lbs of torque at 4500 rpms. Or something crazy like that. It's one of the most beasty of any inline 4 cylinders ever made in a production bike, in terms of low end torque. It's the new liquid cooled Bandit, with about 109 horsepower. I'm guessing, the Bandit is WAY more fun to drive than the Fazer, because people complain about the Fazer being low on torque. The problem is, the front end on the Bandit doesn't look nearly as good as the Yamaha. I wish Yamaha would have put a 1250cc engine on the FZ1, and made it have 100 ft lbs of torque.

So when you inform your insurance what the size is they dont ding you for having a 1000 CC engine. Not uncommon actually, and not just the FZ but all the Japanese bikes now have great longevity with the engines. I read about a Suzuki V-strom with nearly 200k on it. Quite impressive really. My old Harley sportster made it to 70k before it was smoking and needed a top-end rebuild. I guess that's decent for an old air-cooled engine though.

I have a FZS 600 Fazer here in the UK with 104,000 miles on the clock. These things are pretty much bullet proof!! Only downside is the crappy tab washer holding the front sprocket nut in place. As long you keep a regular check on them though, you’re fine.

Yeah it's a badass bike. Front end wants to fly up all day. The pinnacle of a carbureted bike. I got 45mpg on mine. Most people put hard luggage on them and taller windscreens. A ton lighter than an FJR. STELLAR brakes too. And look close - fully adjustable front forks! This was the track day bike of that era.

Change out the sprockets and the fz bikes wake up a bit. The downside to them is and has always been the weight and non-adjustable suspension. 🙃 still very fun machines. I hit a deer this year and my fz8 went right through it. 😬. I barely nicked a deer while riding my ZX 10 and the plastics friggin exploded. 👍👍

Got mine with 32k miles for 1800 and Its got 35k on it now 4 months later, and I couldn't be happier with it. If you've got the opportunity to get one of these go for it, they are $120 a year on insurance :p I'm 20yo too so this bike is jesus for me.

Insurance company here. Many things are calculated into an insurance premium and rates. First and foremost, you're driving habits (tickets, accidents, etc.). That part of the rate is pretty standard no matter what you ride/drive because we're insuring you against hurting someone else. Next part is the actual vehicle/motorcycle you're driving. Propensity to be stolen, crash parts, cost, demographic of a partuclar bike's rider style, etc. all figure into the rate. Typically, you don't see squids with mohawk helmets on Fz1's. They are on the Gixxers, CBRs, Zx's Busa's, etc. Also, rarity does come into play. Just like it's baby brother the Fz6, the Fz1 rider typically isn't a new rider, has years of experience, and is a more mature rider than the supersport counterparts. Finally, just the overall propensity of a bike to be damaged in a crash. Fairings are god awful expensive and anything with a fairing is going to be more expensive to insure than it's naked counterpart. Heck, one of my previous bikes a Burgman 650 cost more to insure than my Fz6 did even though the Fz was a rocket compared to it. Reason being is all that plastic would be ruined in a tipover accident whereas on a Fz6, you might get a few scratches on the pegs and maybe a blinker assembly.
Bottom line, we know how fast a bike is. What we care about however, is how that speed is being used and who's straddling it.
