When I used to go see the hillclimbs at Muskegon, Michigan, the safety people had ropes that were anchored at one end and had a big (18" or 0.5m) hook on the other end. They would try to get the hook into a wheel or the frame to keep the bikes from going all the way back down the hill. I never see this on any of the RUclips videos.
