- Going for an early morning ride on my new to me 2001 Yamaha FZ1. Super awesome machine and one of the best "super" standards ever made. Going over a little history of the FZ1 and talk about the super standard war of the ZRX 1100 Bandit 1200 and FZ1. Shout out to "J" for selling me an awesome running machine for cheap. Definitely a great bike that a motorcycle enthusiast will absolutely love to ride. Enjoy this little vid I made about the FZ1 or Fizzy or Fazer 1000 S.

One thing I’ve noticed about my 1st gen FZ1: it handles intense summer heat like nothing else I’ve ridden, thing runs cool even in 111f heat.
I have owned two gen Fz1 motorcycles, and there is a reason why I bought another one. I regretted selling the first one, because it truly is an awesome bike.
Great review. I’ve had mine for 18 years from new, and even though I’ve just turned 70, I still look forward to riding it.
I'm 25 and could see myself keeping my gen 2 FZ1 until I'm your age if I'm lucky enough to make it!

Happy memories. Ran my gen 1 Fazer 1000 for over 125K miles from new. Upgraded stock forks and shock done by K-tech and fitted an Ivan's jet kit. 125 bhp at the wheel. Smooth, comfortable, reliable relatively economical, and yet exciting when you wanted it to be. It was my ultimate bike. Respect Yamaha. Thanks for your review 😎👊
Having had my FZS1000 (FZ1) for 10 months now, after having owned a variety of big bikes, I must concur with everything Jed (and many others in the comments section) have said. Why have I only discovered it now at 42? I was obsessed with sports bikes for too long. If only I’d known, I would have bought one 20 years ago!!!
Awesome review! After listening to you talk about the FZ1, it makes me glad that I never got rid of mine. I bought it new in 2003 and put over 150k miles on it since then. I ALMOST sold it a few years ago but didn't.

I bought mine one month ago, a 2004 FZS1000, 143hp, 81000km (now 82000 :) and this bike is awesome, for sheap!
I was surprised by have a trip with 2 freinds with 1000gsxr 2007 and mv agusta brutal, and when we were able to full throttle in our country side,
my friends were just WTF!

Big up riding brother from Nottingham England. The home of Robin Hood. I have the fzs 1000 and I love it. Its a rocket ship on 2 wheels it's the carb model. So silky smooth. Its amazing to ride. All the time. Power when you need it but rides incredibly I just love it. Keep rocking the U.S ride on ride it like it's stolen
Just picked one up with 37k for 2800 $ all stock . Definitely a fantastic bike . Couldnt be happier with it . Great power , really comfortable. Handles great too . Favorite thing to do on it is straight whip my buddy on his 600

Hear hear... I've the same '02 Silver version i bought 8 years ago. Owned various wonderful bikes over the decades and this is by far the best all rounder that delivers every time without any trouble.👍👍. Just got to the 17,000 mile range.

@@lazar2453 I've put close to 15k on it myself, 27k on the bike. Once you get a set of highway pegs and rearsets, I really don't have a single complaint.

The gen 1 Fazer is a fabulous bike,i have my 02 model for 14 years and still love it like the day i bought it,took mates 1250 Bandit for spin lately but no comparison to Fazer for putting smile on face.

I just bought a 2009 FZ1 with only 7k miles for 4500. I absolutely love it. Your right it does everything well. Great for my hwy trips to work but can carve the corners too. I have found my favorite bike so far out of all I have owned.
I think the Gen 1 is 2000 through 2005.

One of the most underrated bikes ever imo. I had an 04 with GYT-R handlebars and exhaust and it was a beast. I sold it for my dream car (87 firebird formula) and next yr I will be fortunate enough to buy it back. I sold it to my nephew and now he want a cruiser so good news for me.. Good to see some love for the FZ1.
I have an 02 with all the right mods, owned 14 years, recently revamped nicely (05 engine, suspension, power upgrades) best all arounder bike ever made imo
I have another take on this. It's the bike that left the standard/UJM category in the rearview at 155 mph and was imho the origin of the naked bike class. I recently got another one and getting it up to speed is bliss.
Enjoyed your review, and you were pretty much spot on with everything you said. I am on my fourth Gen 1, so love these bikes. When I lived in Mass, I had a gorgeous both from new 2003 with the Kenny Roberts colours, called the Bumblebee. Back retired in Ireland since 2001, I currently ride a 2001 bike with red paint, very nice. I do not think that colour was offered in the States. Cheers.

I was tossing around the idea of getting a 2001 that has 75,000 miles on it. The bike looks like it was very well cared for. Is this a mistake and how much should I pay?
@@richardfarabaugh7604 I’m almost at 80k miles and still running strong. Not sure how much they go for where you live but you could probably offer $1500 🤷♂️used bikes are ridiculous prices right now though…

A sargent seat and handle bar risers go along way. I also have bar end mirrors and fairings and flush mounted blinkers and a few other things the fairings are impossible to find but it makes it beatiful and a great bike
Upgraded from my EX500 starter to a well cared for '02 FZ1 for UNDER THREE GRAND this year. Feels like the earth spins backwards a bit when you hit it. Absolutely love the bike, find any excuse to get on it that I can. Can't believe that they're not higher priced on the used market, given the value they represent. Nothing more than a yoshi slip-on and I have tons of fun on freeway blasts, just cruising around downtown Denver hearing those decel pops echo off the buildings, even just going to get groceries (cortech side bags and a backpack will move 100 bucks of groceries!). I don't think I'll ever sell it.

I had an '03 and an '05. Got hit twice but it's such a damn good bike. Carburetors? Well that was as close to fuel injection as it gets. I have a chance to get a 2003 that has 4,700 miles on it for $2,200 and it just might outshine my 2011 Ninja 1000.
As for windscreens - Get the Yamaha factory touring screen. I'm 6'2" . I had a Rifle touring on my 2003 and it was not really that good. The factory sport touring is actually the best IMO.
The valve adjustment is cheep as others go. Mine was sub $200 back then so figure maybe $225 nowadays.
Note: Did some searching and you can't get a factory touring screen, but Givi makes one for it that looks oddly similar.
I doubt that was a valve adjustment for $200, more likely they checked the clearances and found it didn’t need adjustment.
Loved mine. Had it for 10 years until someone t-boned me off it🙁. But.... my cam chain tensioner spring failed at about 30k. Bent 9 inlet valves😯. I rebuilt the motor with a new cylinder head, but my confidence was damaged. Having said that, I’m tempted to get rid of my MT 09 and get another Fazer Thou. So capable and I guess I was just unlucky cos I never came across anyone else that happened to.
Top tips. Copper slip the Exup valve every 6 months or so. That’s a must..
Put some Renthal bars on it. Much comfier and don’t bend as easily as the steel ones.
And finally, 2008 R6 shock conversion. Slight bit of drilling out a bush, fits right in there, better stronger shock, tons of adjustments. Cheap. 😁
Such an underrated bike
That was my first bike when I got back into riding about 8 years ago, and my first litre bike...yeah, beautiful machine. I ended up selling it because, strangely, I got nostalgic for my old Yamaha 650 Maxim (first bike)...I know...What was I thinking! Riding a "reliable and economical" Honda NC750X with the DCT transmission now...definitely not the powerhouse that the FZ is. I see a few affordable, low mileage FZ's around...maybe I'll give it another go round.
You ever been to Barber's motorsport park in Birmingham Alabama? Huge bike museum and racetrack! Vintage festival is first weekend in October.

I own a 2005 fz1 with full fairing kit, ivan jetts, and gpr muffler. I have owned many different bikes and being closer to 50 yrs old this is "grandpas sportbike"
Thinking of either one of these or the SV 1000-S.

Great Video...I stumbled upon it looking up some maintenance tips for my Gen1 bike (Unfortunately, I think RUclips was a bit too new when the Gen 1 came out as there isn't much out there) But, glad I'm not the only one still in love with this beast! I've owned mine since new, 2001--it's the only bike I've purchased new and from a dealer... have contemplated selling it over the years, but just can't seem to let it go--it's just too great of a machine. Own and have owned 14 different bikes (currently have 7) over the years, but this one has been one that's remained in my stable. Awesome bike...and very little maintenance---although I do have a carb flooding issue--was sitting too long. But that is, to date, literally the only issue I've ever had with it. :)
I told my wife, “Don’t ever let me sell this bike”.I almost traded it when I bought a Gen 2 Vmax, but the price they offered me for trade was laughable.I was just like for that much money I’ll just keep it as a back up.

Any advice on finding some hardbags and brackets for my Gen1 FZ1? I'd love something like you have.
Go to revzilla, you can find givi top boxes and side brackets, there is a 2001-2005 adapter kit to buy to work with most top givi top boxes.
I'd look at soft bags though. I bought a set of Oxfotd F4 luggage. (35L tank bag, large tail bags and soft bags). It holds more than I need most days. And it was roughly $500 for everything.
A full set of panniers and top box is easily $1500 from Givi for the brackets and mounts and physical cases in large sizes.
how good are these bikes with a passanger in back for trips longer than 200miles?

Hey man you mentioned you had also owned the bandit 12. Between the two which do you prefer and why? I'm looking at buying airfare bike and it's between those two and would to hear your input.
FZ1 hands down. It's the better machine in many ways. Handles better, lighter, 6th gear, water-cooling, ease of maintenance, better fuel economy, longer range, more comfortable, better instrumentation, better brakes, etc... The FZ1 is just the better bike. Nothing wrong with the Bandit 1200! Just the FZ1 was more enjoyable and better suited for me and my big mile riding.

Would you say this bike can be decent daily commuter? I’ll thinking of purchasing one for mainly this type of riding. More in town with 5 miles of highway
I would recommend dropping a tooth or two off the front sprocket if it's going to spend allot of time south of 50MPH. First gear is very tall with stock gearing (think it will hit 80MPH at redline). I live in rural Vermont and found down 2 in the front was perfect for 50MPH roads. Limits the bike to a top speed of 145ish MPH (if I recall correctly) but it will accelerate very well.
What kind or brand of mounts does that bike have for the side cases. I am looking at buying a 2003 FZ1 this weekend and I was trying to find brackets for mounting some side cases. So far I have looked at givi, shad, and sw motech. None of those companies show a bag mount on their website for an 03.
It's a Givi branded side case rack. I bought mine years ago and kept them after selling my first FZ1.

I am buying a 2004 fz1 in a few weeks and my most inportant question is how are the carbs maintenance? Once a year or 2 plus and does this bike need to be drained of gas for the winter so the carbs dont get fouled up?
I ran Marine formula stab-il in all my carb machines and never had fouling issues. I run the carbs dry every fall before long term storage with heavy dose of Stabil , Marvel Mystery oil and ethanol free fuel. Carbs always come back also though my FZ1 I ran daily and put +70K miles on I never winterized, I just ran it all year round snow or not

Have two bandits I liked a lot. Bought an extra engine to get serious, so I'm heavily invested in the Bandit mk1! But it started already when I borrowed my brother's zrx1200. The Bandits feel cheap..
I heard from a friend owning a FZ1 around 2008-20012 somewhere the FZ1 (first gen) wheelied on ordinary acceleration. Now you tell me they are even more reliable than the Bandit? They sure look better than the bandit too. Weigh less, have more top end.
Though I really like the Bandit engine. I fell in love with that engine in 1984 when the 1985 gsxr750 was introduced. Always was into Kawasakis until then.
Well, the old 5 valve yamaha fz750 head has served yamaha well it seems. It looks complicated and unsymmetric to me, but if it works...

Bandits are near bullet proof bikes but they are a notch lowered on the totem poll when it comes to handling, braking and acceleration performance. They won't die though, a good friend of mine bought my old Bandit 1200 with 88K miles and he rolled it over to 100K miles this year. Still runs awesome, engine, clutch and tranny are all original. That 1157cc lump could be one of the best motorcycle engines to ever make it into production bikes. The R1 derived 20V engine was ahead of it's time. Today Yamaha is making even better engines that are lighter and more powerful. Crazy times we live in... Enjoy my friend! Keep it shiney side up! Best, -Jedz
I agree, the Gen FZ1 is the best all around bike. They call it an old man's R1 because it is a rocket, but comfortable to ride all day.
I’ve had 2 gen 1’s and a gen 2 fz1, for my type of riding I prefer the gen 1.I just bought a Gen 2 Vmax which now is my favorite bike to ride but I just couldn’t let my 2003 FZ1 go.It feels like a featherweight compared to the Vmax.

Jedz Moto I’ve only put a few thousand miles on it since I bought it with around 5,000 miles , but so far it’s been reliable.It takes a while to get use to the handling and size, it’s pretty scary at first.The power is insane, mine has a Tim Nash flash which removes all limiters.It makes the FZ1 feel pretty lame in the power dept. and It’s also a lot more comfortable than the FZ1.This is the first bike I’ve ever owned that would make my arm sockets pop under hard acceleration.The only negative thing I can say is gas tank size (4 gallons) is tiny and after about 100 miles you better be looking for a gas station.Its a thirsty beast that requires super unleaded so that gets expensive too.Another thing I like about it is that it’s a unique bike, not many people have them.Everywhere you go people will ask you about it.
Why do you prefer the gen 1 over gen 2?
Lazar Barbu The gen 1 has a more comfortable seat and ergonomics, plus a larger gas tank.Another thing is the gen 1 makes more power than the gen 2 in lower rpms (like 20 hp more).The gen 1 would power wheelie in first gear simply twisting the throttle, the gen 2 would barely do it with lots of mods done to it.Sure the gen 2 makes more power but I’d rather have the it in lower range than top end.The only thing I liked about the gen 2 over the gen 1 was better handling and FI.
I had a R1 and it was great but painful to ride I'm thinking about the fz1 for the comfort
They call the 1st Gen FZ1 the "old man's R1" for a reason. A comfortable rocket for sure.
I'm 5'8 how high does it sit?
I was looking at Ivan's jet kit dyno results, in a motorcycle magazine, and the dyno curve doesn't look good. I would beware of the jet kit, unless you can see a dyno kit, and do a part for part, exact replica of the known dyno bike. Because at 4500 rpms, after the Ivan's jet kit, the Dyno curve shows sporadic jumps of 10% power, up and down, around the 4,200 to 4,700 rpm range, which is a spot most 4 cylinder motorcycles are known for getting "buzzy" or getting "flat spots." I had a ZX-6R 2002, with carbs, and I drilled out the mufflers. And after I drilled out the mufflers it got a sharp rasp and flat spot around 4,500 rpms, it leaned it out a little. Considering that you do all your cruising exactly at 4,500 rpms, you don't want to mess with the clean factory jetting that is very smooth in that region. But I have no experience jetting these bikes, and I was just surprised to the see the unstable dyno results after the jet kit. Do your research before modifying your air box or drilling your carb. If your bike runs good, I'd advise you NOT to modify the air box, carburetor or jetting. Just modifying the air box WILL drastically change your mid and high range jetting. If you modify your air box too much you can actually lose a significant amount of torque. I know, because I've done it myself to a bike. I drilled holes in the air box, and lost about 15% of the torque. Once I plugged the holes, and re-established the correct air restriction on the air box, it dramatically boosted the horsepower and torque. Drilling holes and cutting stuff doesn't always make a bike better, it will make it worse, unless you are 100% certain that you know what you are doing.
I've done Ivan's carb modification myself last year. With stock carbs the engine was super smooth, with a bit of lag between off & on throttle. After modification, the engine feels just as smooth; but with noticeable increase of torque throughout the lower part of rev range + much more direct throttle feel. If done properly, this is the best mod you can do to this bike for very little cost. It basically improved an already brilliant engine without any downsides.
I owned it running 70,000 Km . It is a good bike . But EXUP cablle & motor trouble happen. Be careful.
I got an '03 in mint condition with 15K miles last month for $3300. If it had fuel injection I would say it's the perfect bike. But carb cleaning isn't a big deal. It's almost the perfect bike. The fuel range is outstanding, I think the gen 2's lost like a gallon of capacity, and most of the underseat storage. I am going to order an R1 shift link to shorten the throw, but besides that it's good.

2001-5 is the first gen bike, one of which he is riding. Looks like a 2001 with that paint but I am in Europe. I currently have a red 2001 and this is my 4th FZ1 ( Fazer over here ), so I love them.

Great Q, let me sum it up with my experience: The Gen 2 was definitely more Sport than tourer and after a 2 hour ride your back and arms were pulp from the overly sprung suspension and uncomfortable seat. The motor was great under Full throttle but it had one of the worst Fuel Injection systems of any Yamaha I've ever owned or ridden. The fueling on the Gen 1 was just perfect. The comfort and practicality trumped the Gen 2 in many ways. I've put some big miles on both the Gen 1 & Gen 2 and in the end I would still choose a Gen1. The motor has more usable torque, the engine is response is predictable and not nearly as twitchy as a GEN 2. Suspension didn't rattle you apart... Etc. Yamaha did get their fuel injection in line with the YCCT system (throttle by wire) that is found on my GEN 2 VMAX. I am a big Yamaha fan boy but the GEN2 FZ1 was more a half faired sport bike than it was an upright Standard bike ready to eat mile out of the crate. Best,

Expect to open you wallet up to fix the throttle issues and address comfort. My buddy had one for over 10 years and loved it. It's a Yamaha so it's still crazy reliable. 1986 yamaha FJ1200 has more low end beef for people who dont know. Do you really need 5 valves. 86 FJ 1200 bikes are
still out there all these years later, do you really think a 5 valve engine will last as long as the legendary FJ and naked bikes

I do, The R1 derived engine of the FZ1 is far more reliable than you'd think and it will go down as one of the most iconic motors IMHO. I've worked on customer's 80's Yamaha I-4 bikes, including the FJ 11/12 and they were subpar to the build quality of the Honda and Suzuki machines of the same vintage. I know a few folks that put well over 100K miles on these bikes and they are just fantastic. Yamaha really honed their ability in making a proper inline 4 when these Gen 1 FZ1s came around. Still the best bike I've owned is my first gen 1 FZ1 that I put close to 80K miles on. The old bikes need constant work to keep on the road... Don't get me wrong I love the old stuff, I have a 1980 GS1000G and the power is like nothing else however when I was putting 20-30K miles on in a season, The Yamaha FZ1 delivered reliable, comfortable and fun miles without issue. Fantastic machine. Not a fan of the FJ1200... Still far too many issues with that bike to make it a reliable machine to ride as much as I ride.
All your mileages are so low :o mine is 50 000 miles!

The first gen is ok. The second gen fz1 is better in every single way.
