I'm still enjoying my 2002 fz1,hard to beat for the money.
Just picked up a 2002 FZ1 with only 19k miles and a full service history. I’m really pleased with it so far. My 14 mile ‘ride home’ became a 100 mile detour which my wife took as an elaborate way to avoid cutting the grass (which is partly true). Great bikes and I think, pretty underrated

@@sugarrfree about £2800. It’s now sold but it was a fantastic bike. Definitely do the ignition advancer modification if you get one, great mod
I have a 2005 silver FZ1, picked it up for $800 a year ago. It was mixing water and oil. I rebuilt the oil/water pump, carb clean and sync, and she runs like a dream now. It has a little over 46k miles but no other engine issues whatsoever, even the valves were still in spec. Coming from riding super sports all my life I'll never go back. The FZ1 style of riding, power, and comfort is everything I'm looking for in a bike. I could only ride my cbr600rr for 30mins, but my FZ I can ride all day no problem. Like you said incredible bang for the buck.

I’ve had my Yamaha Fz1 (2002) for a little over a year now and I’m in love with that bike. It fits me almost perfectly. It’s really interesting to see all of the modifications you’ve done to it. That black engine looks so sick.
I have a 2001 FZ1.With 40,000 miles. I bought it with 22,000 miles for $2100.00. about 7 years ago. It has a Corbin seat that I can sit in all day long. No monkey butt here. I installed a full Ivans jet kit with the standard paper filter. Airbox not modded. Screws turned out 4.5 turns each. Runs a bit rich, but runs fine in all weather and elevations up to 6500 feet with no starting issues ( contrary to the video poster, these bikes stock run lean, not rich). No advancer on the timing wheel. Reset the TPS to run it with some engine braking. And an idle of about 900rpm. With the Ivans kit, I clipped the slide springs about 1/4 of an inch each. The throttle is super snappy and the power is instant on. Added an 18" Delkevic can and mid-pipe. Sounds great at low RPMs and then screams at you as you accelerate. The bike is a beast and it surprises other newer bikes with its maddening acceleration. 60 to 100Mph comes very quickly. Low-end torque comes on at about 4000 RPMs and really sets in at 6000 rpm and pulls all the way to 10,000 RPM. No need to go to redline, it's not doing much after 10. I changed out the brake lines to Galfer braided lines for improved braking. Double sintered pads on the front and organic on the rear. I adjusted the rear pedal so I can not lock it up. Installed LED's into everything expect the high beam light. Too bright. With the LED's in everything, you save the stator from cooking the main harness under the fuel tank. A major problem on these bikes. The charging system is only about 365 watts. The standard headlights take 110 of that and the ignition takes another 125 or so. The rest of the lights take up the rest. Leaving about 45 watts in reserve. One heated grip install and you will cook the harness. Another annoyance is the ignition. As they age the contact gets gummy and you will come out of the store and your bike won't start. I squirt some contact cleaner in the keyhole every 2 weeks or so to prevent this from happening. I have installed a fender eliminator kit on the rear and I run a 190 tire to fatten out the look. It has the stock steel gearing. Speaking gearing, I have a Cyclesport bicycle computer as my digital speedo. I can set trips, average speed, top speed with it. I calibrated it to the size of my front tire. It is spot on. The bikes speedo is only 1.0 mile per hour off till about 120, then it gets sketchy.
So far it has been a super reliable and fun bike. I don't plan on selling it to have some newer features.
They run lean at low rpms and get rich at higher rpms. I just picked up a 2003 in black/yellow with 3k original miles for $1200. Just came out of a 10 year storage and didnt even need to pull the carbs and it started up and runs well. I do plan to have the Ivan's jetkit installed and have the rubber bits in the carb done at the same time. Float bowl gaskets are seeping just a little but the bike is very rideable as is. Only modification is a two brothers slip on which sounds great. New OEM fuel filter, air filter and oil filter. Fresh oil and coolant and new battery. Have some frame sliders on the way. Dont plan to do a lot to it, want to keep it as showroom shape as it is now. But is an awesome bike to ride. Cant wait to see the difference with some carb work.
I have question. I’m considering buying a 2001 that looks well taken care of but it has 75,000 miles. Is this a bad idea and if not what should I be willing to pay?? Assuming it was properly maintained that is.
@@richardfarabaugh7604 These bikes seem to be around $2500 -4000 . Low mileage bikes go for more. But think the competition is pretty fierce around the 4k mark. As you can get a bike with FI and anti lock brakes.
@@bnelson4575 FI is not as great as it has been made out to be on a bike. Carb is more reliable with basic maintence and proper car. FI is mostly jerky and unpredictable on a sport bike. Carbs are smooth and linear. I've had a few of the latest and greatest FI bikes and now I'm back with the fz. I've had 3 of these now. I plan to keep this one for a long time.
After watching your gen 1 videos it made me decide to get a gen 1 after my FZ6. It's everything I'd ever want. Good torque, nice linear power, freeway cruising is super enjoyable and stable. And great build quality. Mine has a yoshi race can so it's nice and spicy above 5000 RPM.

@@Jedz123 People talk about "forever bike" character and the FZ1 has it in spades.
The 1 gen FZ1 (2001 to 2005) is one of the best motorcycles ever made. I have owned two of them and they simply get it done. A comfortable rocket that handles great and and had very little maintenance issues.
Definitely, had vfr 800 and ninja zx6r fazer when it comes to handling its not too far behind ninja zx6r 636 2005. What a machine, love my 2002 fazer
Good to hear. I can't help myself, but: the maintenance issues were little? Like, a valve cap blew off? Or did you mean to say that you had very few maintenance issues?
@@papatorr3669 Well, few could be just one engine swap instead of two and little or tiny could mean a valve cap so I see the confusion here. How about, "maintenance was simple with little work and few dollars spent."?

Have a 2003 upgraded out the wazoo, quick shifter and all. Bought it for $2800, probably have close to 7Gs in her but man is she about as perfect a bike as you’ll get.

My 2002 model is approaching 7k miles. My 2004 model has done 56k miles and they both feel just as smooth.

I think i agree. "Yamahas" keep running just maintain um. 105k miles on my 02 FZ1. Major effort to get it right initially but its a tremendous motor.

Glad I found this video. A few days ago I bought a '03 Kenny Roberts edition with 15K miles for only $3300, but it looks like it has 500 miles, totally mint. The only mod I knew about is a carbon Yosh RS-3, the rest of the bike looks bone stock except for a color matched lower cowl which appears to be a Yamaha part but who knows. But after seeing this it looks like it also has the LED lights with one yellow in front. I was thinking that was factory.

I had a gen 1 now have a fz09. Finding a windshield that works good on the Fz 09 seems impossible. I hesitate to want to go touring on it and really missing my FZ1.
I am looking to buy one. $850.00 , carb cleaning and 4th gear slip-age. It has been awhile since I was on a bike.

Damn bro, ordered the same highway pegs thinking they were going to fit. 😂🤦🏻♂️ Well they work, but had to drill into that bracket. I am going to make a thicker bracket, because that 1/8th inch bracket doesn't feel sturdy enough. I was able to get them on after like 30 mins of removing/drilling. Lol.
I like the idea of the higher handlebars / screen combination. Did you have to fit longer cables / hoses or was there enough stretch as standard? Thanks.
How did you mount the Highway pegs? I bought them and they won’t fit. The frame measures 1.5”

I heard 10% ethanol gas often caused damages to the rubber parts and other issues for this kind of bike. Does this bike really work well with 10% ethanol gas?
It works fine with today's fuel. You cannot afford to not winterize those carbs, otherwise you'll have issues the next riding season. I usually run ethanol free gas in the fall to help keep that water out of it during winter.

Hey Jedz, quick question I own one just like yours 2003 thou, I @ 120k km on it it's an absolute joy to ride it, but on mine the exup valve has seized and broke the gearing in the exup motor. Is yours still running the exup or have you eliminated it ? Also could you pm me and explain in a lil more detail the shimming you have done on jets ?
Where do you stay? I feel like this is probably around western Maryland or Virginia area? Just curious. I do a lot of touring on my gen 1 , just did a 9k miles in 30 days trip cross country , I’m around Baltimore at the moment. Maybe we could get together for a ride sometime?

You won't find anything new for the Gen 1. Twistedthrottle, has hard cases. However there are no instock mounting hardware. Last time I checked SW motech still makes it. It could be 8-12 weeks for your order to arrive. Shop Ebay .

Yes it is. 2001-2005 Yamaha FZ1 fuel tanks were all made of steel. I can attest to that.
