    There's a huge difference between the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 FZ1.. besides the engine which it has the second gen R1 engine where the old fz1 has the first gen.. the 2nd gen fz1 the frame and geometry is almost identical relatively speaking to the second gen R1.. I believe the only differences to the r1 and fz1 geometry is the fz1 seat height is a little higher and the wheelbase on the fz1 is 57 1/2 in to the R1s 55.7 in.. the FZ1 has a rake of 25° and a trail of 4.3in and the R1 has a rake of 24° and a trail of 4in and that gives it sharper handling then the Fz1 but not by much at all.. the 1st gen Fz1 was def more of a sport touring motorcycle and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that but Yamaha rly did create one of the very first production super naked with the second gen FZ1. I have a 09 FZ1 and I absolutely love it. I have just 1 gripe and that's the seat height. On my 99 r1 when I came to a stop I could easily put both my feet flat on the ground but on this 09 FZ1 it's tippy toes but I understand why they did it it helped give the bike a 51% weight distribution front and 49% rear which helps with handling.

      Hello Sean, thank you for the insightful comment! I truly love the feeling of riding the Gen 1 FZ1, but its not as exciting to ride fast as the Gen 2. I picked up an FZ6 this summer and am really enjoying the engine on that bike as well. - Frank

    I have a 2002 1st Gen F-Z1 and almost passed it up for another bike because of its age until I went and looked at it, garage kept with 11,000 mi. Silver with titanium color frame and black trim, I ride the bike everywhere and it's very comfortable, powerful and other than having to routinely adjust the exup valve I have no complaints about it. I learned quickly to have your weight forward when accelerating hard in first and second gear tho😯, taken it up to 150mph and still had plenty of throttle and rpm left, i don't ride wild like that and use it for a sport tourer like it was designed for, but it's a very fast bike,and exotic with the 5 valve engine 😀 👍

    In the day you’d order a kit from Ivan’s Rockland County Motorcycle and rejet those carbs. It was the famous Ivan’s Jet Kit and it will honestly make a Gen I smoother and more responsive than any FI bike I’ve ever had - and I’ve had a few.

    Are the bars on gen 2 more comfy? Less stress on arms and shoulders?

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  3 года назад

      I fount the Gen 2 bars to be even more comfortable than the Renthal 758-01 I put on my Gen 1. If it was not three weeks get a set from ebay, I would have gone that route. The Renthal are comfortable, and (For me) far better than stock. I would not say the Renthal or Gen 2 cause any more of less stress on the body, the Gen 2 just have a slightly better bend.

    I had a 2002 FZ1 and then went to a 2007, then went back to a 2003.I was really disappointed in the low end power of the Gen 2, even after spending tons of money trying to improve this.The Gen 1 would wheelie without trying in first gear wringing it out, I’d rather have the power down low than up top.Another thing I didn’t like on the Gen 2 was the snatchy throttle response, although I know over the years Yamaha improved it.I just prefer the comfort of the Gen 1 over the Gen 2.

      I agree. I'm also tall and had real issues with the ergos on the gen 2. Felt very cramped, especially seat to foot peg distance. It looks more modern and has fuel injection and would seemingly be a better bike but wasn't the case for me. My 01 has upgraded suspension and the Ivan's jet kit with Leo Vince exhaust. It absolutely screams. Crazy quick off the line. Power wheelies easy as hell in the first 3 gears. I'll eventually get an MT10, my dream bike, but will never sell this 01 I have. I did all the work myself and have it dialed in perfectly. Handles amazing for it's size and crazy fast. I've shocked the hell out of a many of Italian street fighters. This bike gets a lot of respect from everyone I ride with. I love it.

    How did the throttle response and engine power feel? Comparing carburetor vs fuel injection

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  3 года назад +4

      Glad you asked that, its a very big difference. The carbureted Gen 1 has a slow to engage throttle. The Gen 2 is immediate. This means you need to be careful with the twist of the wrist on the Gen 2, or its going to take off like a rocket.
      One you are at speed however, opening the Gen 2 throttle, it seems the computer is moderating the fuel and keeping you in check, where the GEN 1 will dump as much fuel into the four carburetors as you want.
      Gen 1: Linear, smooth at low rpms, extreme high speed acceleration.
      Gen 2: On-off, not very smooth at low rpms, smooth high speed acceleration.
