I have a little electric bike, and the town I live in is full of people with actual motorcycles, and every time they pass me they wave at me, and it makes me feel happy, because it shows that they acknowledge every single bike
I give the wave to scooters, mopeds , and lil’ electric bikes. It’s only Harley riders that often don’t unless you’re also on a Harley. Signed Kaw rider.
We also accelerate of off stop lights to get out of the "death zone" of the intersection. Something I have been questioned on; "Why do you stop at an angle at stop lights?" Simple, If rear-ended I want to squirt into the gap between the cars in front of me, not be crushed between the car in front of me and the idiot behind me..
Back when I was riding a 750 Norton Commando I was waiting at a light, I saw a car coming up fast behind me I knew he couldn't stop, I looked left/right quickly and took off...lucky as he slid through the entire intersection.
Always be looking for a bailout spot stopped or other wise. Started riding at 13 and still riding at 62 I've used the bailout 3 times 2 of the 3 would have killed me had I not had that mindset and my head always on a 360 degree swivel. You new rider's need to take that to heart. I've had a lot of friends that I use to ride with that are no longer riding with me because of alcohol, drugs or having the wrong mindset when they got on their bikes. Not preaching to any of you so don't think I am but remember one more thing. Don't ever think that you have mastered that bike the day you do it will turn on you. It demands respect just like a car or a gun.
When I'm engine braking, I always slightly apply my rear brake to help control the deceleration and signal that I'm slowing down. It also makes me feel much more experienced than I am.
You need to be using your front brake, Not, your rear brake, 75% of your stopping power is in front, .but, the main reason is you have much more control using the front. Think of it the same way as you would with a blowout. Front blows, you have much more control because the bars are in your hand and you can control the direction of bike more readily. Rear your at the mercy of the bike, rd etc. I personally preferred have control. Also keep in mind, your finger is much closer to the brake than your foot.
@@FastFXSI'm sure he knows that but he's saying he's using the less powerful rear brake mostly to get the brake light on while deaccelerating to make people behind aware...as opposed to just using engine braking where the brake light doesn't come on.
We speed away from the traffic light not only because of physics, but mainly to get away from the cars behind us asap. I even learned to do this in my lessons.
Balls are hot… told a cop this when I was pulled over for standing up because he literally told me it was illegal to ride a bike while standing. I just told him I needed to air out the boys, he told me I should pull over and do it. Dude, no air for the balls if I’m not moving. Come on. Got the whole exchange on video.
I vividly remember the day after I got my Harley, I passed an old dude with a belly length white beard on an old Shovelhead and he gave me the side wave. To this day it still makes me feel like the coolest dude on earth
I've been a full time rider for 5 years now. I always just assumed that the 'biker wave' was acknowledgement of each other putting their life on the line in the pursuit of a more exhilarating ride.
I got my first nod the other day (first week riding) on my vision 110 following a black S class on the way home from work. Saw some bikers coming the other way. The guy at the back was sat on a really nice Ducati, we exchanged nods; as I looked back the S class had stopped to turn right, I had to emergency brake and swerve left whilst wobbling all over the place and looking like a bellend.
@@curtekstrom9531 at least you can finally imagine being touched by another human being. Gotta take those W's when u can get them. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I have heard 2 ways the wave is intended for one is the way Yammie told it, keep both wheels down the other is the way my dad told me, meaning the 2 fingers is an acknowledgement for being part of the 2% of riders on the road
I just started riding. I have a Monster 797. I wave at everyone on two wheels. I waved at 2 guys on electric scooters last time, and that made them happy.
Fear is a really good and respected teacher. 👌 complacency kills. I respect every bike I get on. Every time I throw my leg over and start up, I accept that there's a chance I won't come back from that ride so every time I pull into my driveway or where ever I'm headed, its a relief and its satisfying. I never took any further training although I wish I had but after 15 years, I'm pretty aware of what I'm doing lol... not being cocky at all. I'm well aware I could just as easily make a mistake as anyone else on the road. I know guys who have been riding 20, 30 years and still make newbie mistakes, occasionally, but it happens.
Two fingers down is actually originally a signal to let each other know all is well behind them as well as to say hello. E.G. tapping the top of your helmet being a sign of warning (heads up) to an on coming rider that their is a danger they are headed for. Remembering and practicing this was a priority when I was growing up on bikes.
As a truck driver dealing with cars doing to us drivers what bikes do to them is very therapeutic I suggest all big rig drivers to get a bike it definitely helps
And I suggest that everyone that gets a car or motorcycle licence should have to ride in a semi truck for a couple of days to get a idea of what not to do to semi trucks 😐
I'm a truck driver and ride...blows me away how unaware some riders are of stopping distances/length of trucks on passing etc. It's definitely made me even more aware and careful.
being an old school rider for 35 years a lot of these I knew. the standing up method. this also helps when you are moving Ina slow lane with traffic with lots of cars because bikers can do something that cagers cannot, get higher than the roof to see what ahead is happening.
Leaving a stop sign or stoplight also gets you out of the intersection more quickly. Intersections are one of the most dangerous areas on the road for motorcyclists.
Usually from Green light to start is 4 seconds, red light runners are used to it, don't jump out there too fast other people are running the red don't jump out in front of them.
If you’re on a bike you are a real biker. Whether you fall off a 50cc, 650cc or a 1340cc the tarmac hurts just the same. That’s why we all acknowledge and look out for each other…it’s a totally inclusive form of transport
In the UK, we can't do a hand wave as we're passing on the wrong side, so we 'head nod' to each other. One of the many reasons I love riding in the US or Europe so much- doing a two finger salute is so much cooler!
Along with greetings, peaceful journey. The wind also will not grab your hand or destabilize you as arm is down and back thus wind flows past, and freshness of open spaces flows around you!
Brotherhood brother. We stand together. You know if something goes wrong, you got your brothers who will stand by you till you are safe and well taken care of. Throw the two. If you see a stranded brother, please pull over and help. Keep carrying that awesome legacy
Even better are the self cancelling indicators of a harley. I cannot count the time I have waited for them to turn off only to eventually hitting the button at the same moment they do.... An turn them back on again. 😂
@@wickedtwix I know the feeling :D Used to do that on my Harley too. Now I ride a Triumph and I'm glad I can turn the self cancelling off in the menus. I prefer to turn the blinkers off myself :)
“Leave some extra space between the car and the motorcycle”. Problem with that is it doesn’t account for the silly twat who thinks you’ve left him room to get between the car and the bike ahead. Still searching for the mythical beast Common Sense.
You're meant to be leaving space for people to merge. Maybe just don't be selfish and we'd see a lot less assholes on the street. If you aren't at least a few car lengths back then you are too close, if a bike in front has to emergency brake you're going to mow them down.
About a week ago, I was stopped at a red light in 1st gear. Across from me were two guys on sport bikes. They passed me and waved and like a moron I waved back with my left hand. I still think about that moment
Well, you are honest and that is humorous. The fact is everyone " Screws the Pooch" once and awhile, even the pro's. If they tell you otherwise, they are liars. As long as you don't destroy your ride laugh at it.
I have been riding for 40 years and i I love riding my Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 for the last 14 years. I always take precautions and ride safe. I don't do wheelies and show off. I like getting back home safe.
Why are car people on their phones? Why do they not use indicators? Why can they not merge? Why do they do the speed limit in the passing lane? It goes both ways, but id generally say that most motorcycle accidents beyond drunk driving and speeding are entirely the other persons/cars fault. People in cars are just completely oblivious and insulated, music blaring, texting with a drink in their hand a dog on their lap with a passenger yapping.
The whole engine braking thing..... If people still drove standard cars they would understand this anyways 😅. Shoot when not on two wheels I drive a van that has a decent amount of engine braking and I don't use the brake pedal until I need to
Lol been riding from 14 years old now 70 life behind bars. Using the engine breaking is the best and fastest way in an emergency had a buddy riding in lead hated him up front cause if he seen a Tim’s no signal no slowing down it was like an emergency stop every time he did it. Never hit him once. Come to think of it I should have planted him. Well in a way I cant say never hit him once I did once maybe a few more but in the same fight. Notice I said HAD a buddy? Ride safe Brother 😎👊
Always lightly touch your brake, rear brake, when you are using the engine slow you down. Let drivers behind you know that you are slowing down, it could save your life.
Depending on many variables but it could apply the rear brake harder and you likely won’t be ready for it.. tread lightly when practicing this so you know what to expect.
Putting two fingers down also prevents your glove from being blown off. A lot of older riders ride with there turn signals on because the honking keeps them awake on long boring rides.
Recently started riding and I must say your advice is priceless. I've been looking at your videos and have learned alot especially choosing the right helmet since I'm claustrophobic. Going to get an HJC modular. PEACE LOVE AND SAFE RIDING 🏍🙏🏻✌🏻
#3 Yes, bikes have a greater power to weight ratio and leave a stop sign/signal light quicker. But a large amount of bike/auto accidents happen at intersections. And that is why I leave the intersection quickly.
I once got ticketed for going over the white line. Once I explained to the Judge I ride a motorcycle. And with everybody so distracted with cellphones & texting; he dropped the charges. And yes I've taken my Harley off-road!
I drive a Jeep, so the waving very much a part of our culture, as well. Even though I don't ride, I usually try to give motorcycles a wider lane by pulling to the side in rush hour traffic to make it easier for them to split the lane. To all the riders that have given the wave to acknowledge the space I've made, you're welcome, and thanks for the friendly gesture!
I joined the discord. I know this will probably get lost in the comments but sometimes when I’m home alone I like to go out in my garden and cover myself with dirt and pretend I’m a carrot.
I used to do that but I would pretend I was an onion. Once when I was digging myself back up I accidently cut myself with the shovel, my eyes stayed red and it looked like I was crying for over a week until my boo boo healed up. Now I pretend I'm a potato, and just stay away from deep fryers........✌️
I’m a car guy. I left lane drive and I always move over to allow lane splitters room for their safety. I almost always get the two down salute. Car guys gotta respect the bike riders. (I’m a nurse, I’ve seen the “ouch”).
'White-lining' is (or was in the 70s) legal in California. But it was mostly a legal loophole. First, most bikes are air cooled and CA freeways are justifiably infamous for their stand-still traffic. Second, bikes were legally permitted to share a lane with another bike - but since the law actually read "another vehicle' bikes could legally share a lane with a car; making 'white-lining' legal. (NOTE: this also meant that technically a 'white-liner was not suppose 'ride' the white-line. They were suppose to stay in one lane or the other, and if they changed lanes all requisite signaling was required. So, no white-line' weaving.) Put these two facts together and 'white-lining' was virtually a common way of life for bikers on LA freeways. (This type of "White-lining" ,aka Lane-splitting or Lane-sharing, is generally not legal outside of CA.) I tried it once in LA. But never again, and for good reasons. First, LOTS of CA drivers resent 'white-liners' and not a few will take aggressive actions against them. Second, I rode a dressed out tour bike - bigger bike, smaller mid-lane clearances. On top of that, I rode a Goldwing which is water cooled, so I didn't really have a NEED to take the added risk (or risk the threats) of 'white-lining'
Leaving the light or stop sign at a high rate of speed is actually safer since most people seem to want to run over a motorcyclist and get away with it. As long as the bike is slow or stopped, makes it harder for them to dodge you.
I currently have a 150cc scooter rn since I'm a new rider, and the amount of serotonin I get when I get waved at is astronomical. It's so nice that community is open like that
My FZ07 engine brake - I can lock up my rear tire from 3rd to 2nd. 2nd to 1st - all day. Drift starting (dont ask) needs 4th. I'm always aware of whats around me but Ive got in the habit of hitting the rear brake enough to light up my tail light when I downshift just to be extra safe and alert vehicles behind me. Its a super fun bike to ride but can be a bit squirrely even if just letting off the gas in the same gear around a corner. The Power Commander, Akrapovic exhaust and air filter helps Im sure... I came out of the womb riding a wheelie. Sorry for that image. I never stop respecting a bikes power or a cagers inability to see/hear me (or nature). Probably a good thing I let my CBR954RR go after 10 years. Loud pipes save lives - Im a believer. One thing I personally think you missed - when a biker revs really loud while in motion. Now, some do it because they like the sound but when youre riding and someone pulls out in front of you - or tries to get in your lane - similar to the turn signal stuck on - the horn button isnt always easy to hit. The throttle however - with a loud pipe - that driver knows something is up and they look (most of the time). I did however have a soccer mom literally try to kill me with her SUV when I did that with my CBR and Two Brothers exhaust. Icy roads even. I was doing 30. She had to have seen me. I had enough time to slow but hit the throttle (for noise) - she slammed her brakes. 500ft later the road split. I was going right (to work at 7:30AM) she was going left (to town) - she swerved over on me. Hmmfph. Anyway. Keep it rubber side down folks. (Oh side note - I 2 finger even scooters when I pass - were all just enjoying the ride right? Though I feel shaded when they dont wave back hehehe)
After 40 years I got my first motorcycle with self-canceling turn signals. It took me about a year to let the feature work on its own, habit habit habit.
Mine is self canceling in 30 sec. If to slight a turn. I still am all over turning them off quickly. I don't display brake light when down shifting. I am all about mirror and then display stutter stop brk. lights. Safe travels!
Yeah I think he is justifying riding fast. I have a Gixxer 1000 and I can take off slow like a car if I want too, but it's so easy to just walk away from everyone that I just do it.
Great video! I like that you went over the front/rear brake vs. engine braking bit. In my opinion one of the best things that a beginner can do is to get in the habit of lightly pressing the rear brake when you are slowing down via engine braking... not enough to engage the rear break (unless you need it), but enough to make the brake light go on. Every time I ride a new bike, I (in a stationary position) have someone stand behind me and as I depress the rear brake and have them tell me when the light comes on. It's an easy skill to learn, and could prevent a rear-ending. Also, in regards to speeding away from a stop light, I do this to get out in front of traffic, as I feel much safer there. But, a note to beginners, you MUST be super aware of cross traffic. If you jack-rabbit it off of a stop light, and there is someone trying to beat a red light, you are dead. Cheers, and thanks for the videos!
I'm so glad I found this channel, it has everything for a person like me. Im new to bikes and I really don't know anything about the 2 wheel culture. Thanks alot because I'm actually learning
Fun fact...The signal to alert others of a police car...was originally not a "tap" on the top of the head, but a fist placed thumb-side down on top..to imitate the old "bubble gum" single rotating light on top (that was replaced by the light bar)...yea, been riding a while.. :) Cheers
In Australia we raise our hand fist closed with your pointer finger pointing up and making a circular motion from the wrist to imitate a the old school flashing lights to warn of police the benefit of this signal is that if you happen to be driving a car at the time you can still give riders around you a heads up that they’ll understand
I ride a yamaha 400 Majestic. It's Wyatt some call a maxscooter. I love being on 2 wheels. I, also feel much satisfaction when I get the wave from people on "real" motorcycles. I installed a module on my bike that flashes the brake light when I slow down without tapping my brakes. It's been helpful. Great video.
I'm used to it now, in the UK everyone waves. Had subarus, they wave. Had land rover, they wave. Drive a tractor, they wave. Got a classic yank truck, they wave. Now I ride a harley and all the other bikers nod because we Drive on the left so our clutch hand isn't visible 🤣
If you do another one on this topic I suggest explaining why we stop far left or right at intersections and also why we tend to ride on the far left as opposed to the center of the road.
tendency? anecdotal evidence at best. The center part of the lane is where all the debris ends up, as well as all the oil droplets... the center lane in heavy dew or light rain turns to a slip slide.
@@robertg5775 where the hell do you ride where cars still leak oil and are dropping debris on the pavement?! you stop at the left side of the lane, 10 feet back, and point your bike at the drivers side of the car in front of you for WHEN someone comes up behind you and does not stop. You go around the car infront of you who has seat belts and air bags and crumple zones - HE will survive, you will not survive getting pancaked between two vehicles We ride almost on the center line when the road is clear because on roads with trees and bushes right up to the edge of the pavement, you dont know when an animal will jump out into the street, from either side. Being near the centerline gives you the best options to see it coming, swerve and miss.
THANK YOU! Same here. I just don't get it. Hey we are both on two wheels and a motor, gotta wave to each other. I can't think of anything else where everyone has this compulsion to wave because of something so common place in common. ...Now granted...if it's really raining hard, or really cold and raining, ok, I might break down and give a ya a wave. It's spring time and every rider is out..nope.
personally I always wear my bike boots or at least ankle boots when on my bike , during my early learning bike day's I tipped over on a 600 while on a training day ,luckily I was static at the time lol but the bike actually pinned me to the ground . I was wearing bike boots which saved my leg from the hot exhaust pipe . That sealed the wear bike boots deal for me . Silly things do happen to us all at some point . H
Wow, I get that motorcycle greeting quite a bit in my car. Since lane splitting is legal here in California, quite a bit of riders do that when I move my car to give them more passing space on freeways during traffic jams.
When you get that after allowing more room for the motorcyclist, it's usually a "Thank you" or such, but yes, thank you comrade :P. I waved at a bicyclist the other day and they actually gave me a wave back, that was nice. Most motorcyclists are nice people, but if you see someone in no gear besides hopefully a helmet on a sport bike/crotch rocket, don't assume they are as nice.. htose guys tend to be short-tempered and only riding as fun rather than for commute+fun.
where I live some drivers making a left turn across my path wait for me to pass some wait quite a bit longer than they need to, they have plenty of room, but they still wait for me to pass I use to feel obliged to speed up a bit, but that could be dangerous if they actually dont see you when it happens, I hold my arm out and give them a high wave esp if its a school bus or big truck. Just my little way of saying "Hey bro... thanks for not killing me!"
I've been riding for 48 years. I'm 53 now .I started on a little Honda Z 50. Still have it by the way. Moved to a yz 80 and up. Then went to sport bikes. In the UK, because we drive on the left we nod our heads in acknowlegment of other riders, because if we waved we would have to take our hands of the throttle. The leg move is also used to thank motorists who pull over to let you pass, while slow filtering, as you need both hands on the throttle and close to the front brake.
I’m a cyclist and I always tell them when I can abt the #2 also gotta remember unlike cars that have that tick sound from the blinkers bikes don’t and even if they did with the wind in your face the helmet the engine noise and cars around it is really tough to hear
Once I was riding with a best mate on a Ducati. I wondered why I was always on him once he slowed down without the break light, until I understood he had much more engine brake power than I did !
I always hit the brake when stopping. I learned to drive a stick shot and have always had one. After being rear ended in a pickup (twice) because I'd down shift instead of braking.
If you have decent traction and functional calipers you can almost stop on a dime I found out rear brake pads every 2 years and brake fluid change as well and then caliper seals rebuild around 5-6 years best maintenance ratio for emergency stopping
I ride a 100cc 2 stroke on a bicycle. Its equipped with lights and signals and all. More than one biker has used the blinker hand gesture when I have left mine blinking. Most of them chuckle and smile when they see me too. Also they do not seem to care that I am riding what amounts to a bicycle with a lawnmower engine on it.
I have been riding over 50 years. One of H-D's best features is self cancelling turn signals. They have had them for 30 years. I'm surprised that the Harley Hating Yammie even mentioned them. Good idea. I have one connected to the oil pressure light wiring with a tap. I have a 98 Vulcan 1500 that might still have a plastic oil pump gear and the buzzer will let me know if the gear breaks and it loses oil pressure.
BMW fitted turn beepers in the 70 s. They stopped doing it in UK because it sounded like the beepers on pedestrian crossings and several blind people were run down. Not funny, but the beeper was wired to the neutral light so it was silent when stationary. Does any maker fit them now?
Watching all your vids makes me want to get my own motorcycle so bad. Just can’t with all the bills and mouths to feed. Sad. At least your vids make me feel like I’m riding, so thanks so much for all the beautiful content.
Harley guy told me he liked my rear flashing light. I was on a bicycle. All 2 wheelers should understand the importance of being seen. (Apologies to John Cleese)
Self canceling turn signals. I worked my way through college as the sales manager of a Kawasaki / HD dealership. My new 1976 Kawasaki 1000 LTD and new 1978 Kawasaki 1000 Z1R both had self canceling turn signals. 2 things had to happen before they'd turn off automatically. 15 seconds AND 150 feet had to go by. Or, you could turn them off manually. I wish car turn signals worked that way.
I use engine braking a lot, but when I'm stopped or coming to a stop with a car behind me, I usually do a stop & go with my front brake lever. I think by flashing the brake light, it catches their eyes a little more.
Well….in my area when meeting a motorcycle on a crooked road and the rider holds up any number of fingers means that’s how many are riding in a group and you will meeting them shortly. Same with the ATV and snowmobile trails.
As a career "car"driver, I would never ride a bike. I see enough car idiots on the road in a highly visible car. No need to be near them in a "I didn't see him there" motorcycle
I rear ended a Harley who engine braked FAST and went from 65-20 in what seems like seconds. I felt bad. He was fine and actually apologized for not using his brake lights. I’m even more cautious now. Be safe
The downward pointing gesture confused me a lot, my first week on the bike. My instinct is to wave gently, like I do in the car. Everyone waves at eachother in their cars here; like, a greeting, not just to direct traffic or get attention. Anyways I figured it was, "two-down".
Engine breaking is very effective, too effective. When doing my lessons my instructor kept telling me to show some break light when scrubbing of 20+ mph to alert traffic behind. I'm aware of this as I did use engine breaking a lot without touching the breaks. I still do it but I touch the the break just enough to turn on the break light
I’ve been riding a bike all my life (I’m 64) and and learned a long time ago when I’m shifting down to slow my bike I just do a little pull on my front brake lever to show the people behind me I’m slowing down nothing drastic just a slight pull on the lever and when I’m stopped at a stop sign or light I hold that lever to keep that brake light on. FYI I don’t know why or when I picked it up it’s just something I’ve always done.
I'm a new guy, have only 3 years of experience motorcycling. My instructor also warned me about engine braking and giving at least a tap to the breaks so that cars behind know you're slowing down with engine brake. One thing I learned here in my city is to get away from cars at traffic lights: many people here check their phones at traffic lights and keep doing it when the green comes on. I have seen cars bump each other due to drivers not looking at the road when taking off at traffic lights, don't wanna try it while I'm on two wheels.
When in traffic and decelerating by rolling off the throttle or while stopped at a light without a car or two stopped behind me. I tap the front brake lever 2 or 3 rapid taps to activate the the brake light every 3 or 4 seconds until I see the car approaching from the rear decelerating. Always give yourself an exit path in stopped traffic and enough space between you and the car stopped in front of you to use it. The brake light flashing rapidly draws attention, there are modulating circuits to flash the brake light when the brakes are applied automatically that can be added to any bike.
Unless your in an occasional situation where you need to do it, I Think its stupid. Which is cheaper replacing brakes or clutch, transmission & motor parts?
I've always found it interesting that all of my old fashioned designed Harley-Davidsons had self canceling signal indicators, but hardly any of my Japanese bikes in the same age range did not. It just seems like it would be the Japanese that would have the high tech stuff when it comes to motorcycle signal indicators.
Here in New Zealand we drive on the other side of the road so your style of greeting passing bikers wouldn't get seen - we usually raise the left hand, or sometimes do a helmet nod :o 😎 👍

Caught my first few waves on a Honda grom, it was awesome to feel included on that lil thing
As a truck driver and bike rider the wave you get as a rider gives the same feeling as pumping your arm to a trucker. It makes our day so don't stop
We also accelerate of off stop lights to get out of the "death zone" of the intersection. Something I have been questioned on; "Why do you stop at an angle at stop lights?" Simple, If rear-ended I want to squirt into the gap between the cars in front of me, not be crushed between the car in front of me and the idiot behind me..
thats a good one ive never consider thx for the tip
We also accelerate of off stop lights because it's fun. :D.
It demands respect just like a car or a gun.
and to get away from all the cars that are stopped at the intersection with us.
Applies especially when cornering through curves
@@FastFXSI'm sure he knows that but he's saying he's using the less powerful rear brake mostly to get the brake light on while deaccelerating to make people behind aware...as opposed to just using engine braking where the brake light doesn't come on.

First Harley must be like having your first born. It’s a very cool feeling.
I've been a full time rider for 5 years now. I always just assumed that the 'biker wave' was acknowledgement of each other putting their life on the line in the pursuit of a more exhilarating ride.
Thats what the head nod means to me in the UK
I got my first nod the other day (first week riding) on my vision 110 following a black S class on the way home from work. Saw some bikers coming the other way. The guy at the back was sat on a really nice Ducati, we exchanged nods; as I looked back the S class had stopped to turn right, I had to emergency brake and swerve left whilst wobbling all over the place and looking like a bellend.
I always thought they were just giving each other a Virtual Reach Around.

I have heard 2 ways the wave is intended for
one is the way Yammie told it, keep both wheels down
the other is the way my dad told me, meaning the 2 fingers is an acknowledgement for being part of the 2% of riders on the road
I just started riding. I have a Monster 797. I wave at everyone on two wheels. I waved at 2 guys on electric scooters last time, and that made them happy.

AGREE ! The "knee pressed into the gas tank" trick saved my life TWICE, so far.
The best training you can get to ride a street bike is to start with a dirt bike.
E.G. tapping the top of your helmet being a sign of warning (heads up) to an on coming rider that their is a danger they are headed for. being an old school rider for 35 years a lot of these I knew. the standing up method. this also helps when you are moving Ina slow lane with traffic with lots of cars because bikers can do something that cagers cannot, get higher than the roof to see what ahead is happening.

In the UK, we can't do a hand wave as we're passing on the wrong side, so we 'head nod' to each other. One of the many reasons I love riding in the US or Europe so much- doing a two finger salute is so much cooler!

I have been riding for 40 years and i I love riding my Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 for the last 14 years. I always take precautions and ride safe. I don't do wheelies and show off. I like getting back home safe.
Why do they continually drive at excessive speeds? Why do they weave dangerously among the cars? Why do they ignore safety rules?
A lot of older riders ride with there turn signals on because the honking keeps them awake on long boring rides.

why is this one of the top comments for me 💀
Blinker is not just about forgetting, it's also when you don't press it to cancel correctly, since the hand in thick glove is less sensitive.
Or if they're self cancelling but often don't do it and then sometimes you cancel it manually right after it actually self cancelled 🤦
I didn’t know to flick your brakes when down shifting. Thanks! I just did it naturally for my safety
(This type of "White-lining" ,aka Lane-splitting or Lane-sharing, is generally not legal outside of CA.)
I tried it once in LA.
It's Respect to a biker or trucker
Leaving the light or stop sign at a high rate of speed is actually safer since most people seem to want to run over a motorcyclist and get away with it. As long as the bike is slow or stopped, makes it harder for them to dodge you.

You go around the car infront of you who has seat belts and air bags and crumple zones - HE will survive, you will not survive getting pancaked between two vehicles
We ride almost on the center line when the road is clear because on roads with trees and bushes right up to the edge of the pavement, you dont know when an animal will jump out into the street, from either side. Being near the centerline gives you the best options to see it coming, swerve and miss.

In the UK, because we drive on the left we nod our heads in acknowlegment of other riders, because if we waved we would have to take our hands of the throttle. The leg move is also used to thank motorists who pull over to let you pass, while slow filtering, as you need both hands on the throttle and close to the front brake.
Yeah, the two fingers thing is ‘universal’ in the same way as the ‘World Series’.😉✌️
"bike-curious" is a winner.
I always hit the brake when stopping. I learned to drive a stick shot and have always had one. After being rear ended in a pickup (twice) because I'd down shift instead of braking.
i avoid down shifting to brake, just press brakes while also doing engine braking on same gear
If you have decent traction and functional calipers you can almost stop on a dime I found out rear brake pads every 2 years and brake fluid change as well and then caliper seals rebuild around 5-6 years best maintenance ratio for emergency stopping
Thank you for this video because I got my first bike yesterday and had no idea about any of this and now I do and can be a better rider
When I am riding my Ninja I catch my self on occasion forgetting to cancel the turn signal. It's very dangerous to leave on a turn signal, it's an accident waiting to happen. My street glide never lets me down, it works every time.
what are the other 'best features'? Cause I don't see any.
@@gizzyguzzi My 2014 Street Glide Special comes standard with the following.
1 High output 103cu/in air/oil cooled 45 degree V-twin putting out 105 ft/lbs torque.
2 Dual 4 pot front and 2 pot rear brakes by Brembo.
3 Brakes are linked above 25 mph.
4 Hydraulic clutch
5 ride by wire
6 Cruise control
7 Best paint and chrome in the industry
8 6.5" color touchscreen with AM/FM/WB, with blue tooth and navigation.
9 Resale value. Harley-Davidson's hold their value more than any other brand.
10 After market is huge so you can customize almost any part on the bike.
11 Comfort. a neutral seating position with a great seat, bars, and foot boards means long distance rides are easy.
@@marka2510 Good to hear they are finally putting brakes on Harleys now. Hydraulic clutches! WOW! And that AM FM touchscreen, lots of chrome, ride by wire, CC, Linked Brakes? No thanks. Let me know when they develop a good suspension.
@@gizzyguzzi I'm sure since Harley is owned by Kawasaki, they will get around to putting a better suspension under them. Then again since most HD lined are assembled in Mexico with parts from everywhere except the USA, they might not.
@@Mortan40175 Harley Davidson is NOT owned by kawasaki. And never has been. All Harley Davidson motorcycles for the US market are assembled in the US.
Harley contracts parts to be manufactured from various factories around the world. But not all parts.
For the turn signal issue, wire a resistor to each side of the turn signal wiring. Connected to a little piezo buzzer. You will hear the buzzer as long as the current flows to the turn signal. 1300R VTX Rider.
That was me for 2 years. Riding now though it'll happen. In the mean time it's an awesome substitute haha
Get a small off road bike then. Get it! Do it!
Get a 1100 V Star, cheap and reliable
Turning off my blinker has literally been the friggin HARDEST DAMN THING for me to remember to do since owning my bike over the past few weeks.
It’s tricky right, I keep forgetting all the time and I’ve only been riding 60 years.
Yup.
I use engine braking a lot, but when I'm stopped or coming to a stop with a car behind me, I usually do a stop & go with my front brake lever. I think by flashing the brake light, it catches their eyes a little more.
It does. They actually make, and are heavily promoting a unit that causes your brake light to flash when you engine brake.
30% of the fatalities in AZ are from rear enders. I tap the brake to let people know I'm there.
Well….in my area when meeting a motorcycle on a crooked road and the rider holds up any number of fingers means that’s how many are riding in a group and you will meeting them shortly. Same with the ATV and snowmobile trails.
who has 50 fingers.
@@survivortechharold6575 thank you i was just gonna say that
You speed off from a stop so you don't get rear ended
As a career "car"driver, I would never ride a bike. I see enough car idiots on the road in a highly visible car. No need to be near them in a "I didn't see him there" motorcycle
I rear ended a Harley who engine braked FAST and went from 65-20 in what seems like seconds. I felt bad. He was fine and actually apologized for not using his brake lights. I’m even more cautious now. Be safe
many riders cause the problems. beware their are cars everywhere !
Always tap your brake lever to light up the break light when you're engine braking to slow down in traffic.
Good advice
The downward pointing gesture confused me a lot, my first week on the bike. My instinct is to wave gently, like I do in the car. Everyone waves at eachother in their cars here; like, a greeting, not just to direct traffic or get attention. Anyways I figured it was, "two-down".
Red Toy. 2910 lbs./139 hp = 20.9 Lbs. per hp. calculated the other way.
Bikers wave is the best mutual respect you can get
Engine breaking is very effective, too effective.
My 82 Yamaha virago did. They don’t work anymore, but it had them.
most signal switches have a spring that unloads the switch when you remove your finger from the buton

Here in New Zealand we drive on the other side of the road so your style of greeting passing bikers wouldn't get seen - we usually raise the left hand, or sometimes do a helmet nod :o 😎 👍
It's awesome to see alot of riders on the nz roads. Even recieved and given the nod or wave
