This is the second time one of your videos saved my lawnmower. In the beginning of the summer i resurrected an old one by following your video, but then it got stolen. We had a very old lawn mower sitting around that hadn't been used in at least 10 years. This morning I cleaned the carb, replaced the air filter and she fired right up. Thank you for all your help. You've saved me a ton of money.
Thank you for posting this video and part two. It helped me bring an old dead lawnmower back to life.
Thanks a million for this. I still have my 1983 Montfield mower with this engine. It had stopped and wouldn’t start and with your excellent video it’s now running better than ever 👍👍
Wow you should start a old lawn mower museum! I've never seen such old lawn mowers in my life and I'm 50 years old! lol Good job.
Many many thanks for posting this video.
I have a 1974 Mountfield M3 mower (with a Briggs & Stratton engine) which had lain unused for the last 7 years, because it was impossible to start.
Courtesy of your tuition, I had the courage to remove and clean out the fuel tank and carburettor.
My M3 now runs almost like new. (Only "almost" probably because it is now impossible to obtain the correct fuel for this engine ---- i.e. 4-star leaded. But at least it DOES run on 2-star unleaded, with a little squirt of Redex !!).
Thanks once again ..............
I have an old dead lawn mover with exactly the same engine, and the problem was in the points, I discovered that with multimeter, but this video helped me with taking out the flywheel from the axis. So thank you very much, today I managed to start my B&S!
Thank you for putting this video up, it gave me the confidence to do a successful tune-up of my mower! Much appreciated!
I did not realize you had posted this...I love your videos.
Awesome Vids donyboy73! good editing, straight to the point, excellent info.
Thank you sir!
Thanks mate ! Just followed your vid and my engine started right afrer mounting it back. No works like a charm !!
After your watch video, my lawnmower is back to running condition again, you are awesome, thanks a lot
Don this is what I needed to see of all the inherited motors, lawn mowers, and Rotax and Cuyna motors that my Father gave me after he passed away ..to tell you the truth I am a little scared of the Cuyuna and Rotax (bombardier) motors, but this will get me started on the single lung motors thanks John, Oregon
I have what is essentially the same tiller and it needs this done.....Great video.....THANKS!!!
Very nice job depicting and explaining in layman's terms! Thanks
Thank you so much, first video I’ve seen with vacuum diaphragm. My masport is having issues.
This was huuuuuge in helping me. Followed along with the video, thanks so much.
Thank you for the video, it was a lot of help. My mower has the same carb.
brilliant , clear and concise , makes a job that was going to be difficult a enjoyable exercise even though the outcome has been down to you and your clear video and iv,e given myself a pat on the back but the credit for it goes to you , many thanks
Really a great, clear video. Good job!
excellent stuff you post on here !
This was huuuuuge in helping me. Followed step by step, thanks alot!
@kvb1085 usually it is on the side of the engine at the bottom. just a scew cap and no dipstick. u can use sae 30, 5w30 or 10w30
Excellent video I'm going to clean my carb now.
@NewHollandTom it's put away but those are automatic choke, if it doesn't work well u might want to replace the diaphragm
@visuallogic thanks dude!
@iwts145 glad to hear that!
Great vid donyboy
Dony, on these older carbs, do they all have the wider spring under neath the diaphragm or depending on the carb is it just the smaller spring attached to the diaphragm ? Thx
thank you sir!
@rosolion i think the diaphragm is 391681 from briggs
@1972porkchop does it even have an adj. screw? some don't
If you want to save yourself time, and not do things twice, ALWAYS clean the outside of the parts first, BEFORE disassembling anything. It's just good practice.
@superbillc spray a bit of gas in the carb to start off, maybe adjust the screw. or you can spray a bit of gas through the spark plug hole. if it doesn't start it could be deeper issues. it is hard for me to diagnose without seeing it
dony, great video. I have picked up an identical rototiller as in your demo. So far i have serviced the Carb following your details and have the engine going. Thanks to your video/you. my problem is mechanical at this point ; a worn worm shaft at the points under the bearings and also the shaft bushing and seal. However i am unable to get the unit info. manufacture and model number off the name plate to source parts etc. Wonder if that info.is available off that unit? Hope by a long shot it is.
Thanks.
You are the most helpful man omg thank you
i think what you talking about is a crankcase breather pipe, you can buy the rubber elbow pipe at any small engine shop
Very good video , thanks so much for posting, i have one question , when taking the diaphram off i ran into a spring the size of a dime, does that fit under the diaphram or on top?
@1972porkchop how's the diaphragm?
Thanks for the info! Now I just need to figure out the fine tuning. My mower didnt have the 1/2 inch bolt to take out the jet. I wasnt sure how to find it/get it out, so I just put the thing back together. Mower worked, but was burning a bit blue, and stalled fairly often.
Thanks again!
Doing a oil change on my older brigs and i was wondering what the oil capacity is on these? Is there an easy way to check if its full. thanks
Very useful video, thank you.
@donyboy73 Thanks helped me out alot im trying to get my dads old one running for him.
When i prime 2x the gas on my snow blower, i seen gas leak...i opened up the cover thinking i have a broken gas line, which i did not....the gas came out from the opening of the carburator out of a small hole....i watched your videos, does anyone know why this is happening? i heard you say in one of your videos if it is leaking you have to take a gasket out with a wire and face something down..not sure of that name...is that the cause of the leak through the front of the carburetor?
@mrbluenun thanks, all videos are made and edited by myself, over 500 of them
@ibbiggs sometimes you can if they are still good and just add a bit of rtv silicone
@davesallotment it may be getting low on compression
@drunk2thepowerofsick awesome dude!
Hey, Dony, I have an old John Deere 3 Edger. The little metal cup inside the gas tank came loose so I pulled it out of the tank. The short tube on the carb went down into that little cup. Now it won't start unless I prime it with a squirt bottle. Is it because that little metal cup isn't there? what's the purpose of that little metal cup? Thanks!
very good video, Thanks!
nice brigg good tips! i got a video out now on my brigg 2hp i have been working on it for like 2 weeks and finaly it runs perfectly!
@skidmore75 thanks, I use nitrile or vinyl gloves
So i cleaned the carb and gas tank as they were filthy. I put it back on and i still got nothing. Everything seems to kick back like it supposed to. I checked compression and got a little over 60. When i check for spark i cant see any but if i hold it the wrong way i sure can feel it. Do you have to be able to see it? Even in day light?
thank you so much i really appreciate it have a good day.
What cleaner did you use and also where would you get replacement diaphram
how do you clean the screens of the long and short tube?...
Great video and narration. I am relatively new to rebuilding engines and this info is very helpful. Also, it is hard to tell from the brief view in the video, but is that an MTD 212-100 tiller? I just recently acquired one (built in 1972) that looks very similar. However, the blower housing was replaced at some point and I cannot determine the engine model. Do you mind sharing your model/type numbers, so that I can use them as a starting point to look for parts diagrams/manuals? Thank you
@camry01 i think the part# is in the second vid
Is there a replacement carb and tank for these? I have one that is missing the choke butterfly and won't run. Can not find new carb like the existing one.
GREAT VIDEO, the linkage at 0:58 goes to the governor.
good vid ...very helpful.
Thanks great job
I really like your videos, Keep 'em coming. Would it be possible to show your shop's work bench and the way you have your sockets and screw drivers on the wall. I've seem them just a little in the background. They look very well organized.
I got this briggs & stratton from 1982 model 60102 type 1132-01 but do you know how many hp and cc it is att?
How do you get the spring out the diaphragm since I have to replace the diaphragm
@BeastFromTheEast94 i believe it's an rj19lm by champion
@pdspublishing maybe the adjusting screw is too far out. also make sure the gas cap is venting, i would have to physically see it to help u more
Good video
yes that would be a problem, you need a new diaphragm and gasket
Hi donyboy73!!! Do you still have that Viking tiller with Briggs engine, and what year model is it? 1973 or in that neighbourhood, right?
dony, can a ignition coil cause a lawnmower to surge, and eventually shut off when the engine gets HOT?...
@spiavsspia happy fixing!
Hey man I have a question...I have a briggs and stratton 3.5 but its not the same model as yours and I'm not really sure what model it is but there is a little metal pipe that seems to run from the engine to the carb, I can not figure out what it is and I need another piece of rubber to secure it to the carb. If you could explain what this is and how much it would cost to get the little rubber fixture and where at to get it that would be great...BTW nice vid
where do you get gas tank spacers for a 3.5 hp birggs and stratton year 1997
I have a briggs & stratton 12hp with vertical shaft.
I was taking off the crankcase plate to change the oil seal and the slinger-oil fell out and I am not sure how it fits back on. Is there any way you could help me put the slinger-oil back in it's position.
thanks
I'd like to start fixing small engines and I constantly have to look for parts..where would be a good place to get parts from?
For example I need a set of rings for a 4.5 HP Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine..
Diaphragm and Gasket for Briggs & Stratton carburetor..
rebuild kits for Tecumseh carburetor....
Where is the best place to get these parts from?
great video man ! thumbs up !

@gavinabcdefghi i used carburetor cleaner, you can get the diaphragm at a small engine shop and sometimes on Ebay

Hi what are the symptoms if the internal choke spring is missing?.Great vids I really enjoy them.
hi do all the diaphragms have a spring as i have been iven a briggs engine that had problems with the carb,and mine has no spring,it has two plastic snorkels as i call them. ( fuel pickups} and no diaphragm and what looks like a locating pin i will try and post a video of the carb for identity its my first time trying to restore 1 of 3 briggs engines
@donyboy73 do you happen to know the part number for the rebuild kit?thanks
@1972FordF150 thanks man
+donyboy73 what brand gloves are you using??I must have the cheapos.Once carb cleaner hits it.They dissolve.
i have a 3.5 hp briggs and stratton and i did a rebuild on it. and now i lost my spacer for the fuel tank and my carburetor screws. i was wondering if you know a website that could help me get those parts.
you can use a piece of pipe or go to a small engine shop
i have 2 of these that i have been working on. i have cleaned out the carbs very well and replaced the diaphram. it will run for a second then slowly run out of fuel all while surging, if i spray start fluid toward the intake it picks up or can slow down so i think its a fuel issue. however with a cleaned carb and new diaphram what else could it be? the tank is clean also, i was wondering if you have seen any of these pick up tubes start leaking at the top where that black sealant is. also i have been working on a couple other engines as well that have a miss (not spark drop), i adjusted and cleaned all spark components and cleaned carbs very well. one is a tecumseh from an early 90's craftsman similar to the eager 1 series and the other is a 5 or 6 hp briggs on a newer toro. with both these i pulled heads thinking the miss was from leaking compression due to leaking head gasket or bad valve seating. both were full of carbon, i cleaned the heads the best i could. with both the miss got worse after doing this i know one of the gaskets were bad but the other was not. i got a new gasket in for the toro and i am going to try it again. any chance my miss could be related to valve seat issues if the head was full of carbon? your videos have helped me on occasion when i get stumped and are always very informative and i do alot of small engine repair but this is still my weak point is this miss unrelated to spark of fuel. any help on these issue would be greatly appreciated, or at least maybe common issues you have seen that cause a miss unrelated to spark or fuel. thanks!
wyomings elkoholic what happens is the gas tanks warp. you need to check the top of the tank with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. There is a repair its a roll pin and a little round gasket from Briggs and Stratton or a supplier. Doesn't work on pulsa-jet with all temp choke. at 3:54 in the video the hole in the middle of the screen with the little channel going into where the spring for the choke goes is what usually warps.
im rebuilding this exact motor, what size spark plug is that? cant find it any where.
@acscolo sure i'll show that in some future video
@QUALITY1412 no shut off valve
what do you mean?
Thank you.
As I write this to you is the first time I have seen you and you clever, explanatory info' on how and what to do with details for even the stupid peeps like me, thanks!
I will be coming and going to your channel as you have a whole lot of videos. At the moment I don't know what they are but I bet they are interesting if they are made by you.
Take care,
mrbluenun
May you be Wealthy, Health and Wise in 2012! Well the last item is not obligatory!
@camry01 at a small engine shop or Ebay
is there a link to part 2 please i cannot find it
do you have a model # or part # so i can track down a carb kit?
My TroyBilt pressure washer won't start... Nothing at all... Dead?.. The carb linkage doesn't have anything controlling it... Doesn't that control the throttle? Is this automatic?... I'm looking for some springs or hooks that fell off but don't see anything, Also, the choke lever and stop & fast handle don't affect it or make it move. Is that normal?.. I'm taking the carb off now and the bowl is clean?...
Dony, do you know if there are still carburetor rebuild kits available for this engine?
I believe my 2002 Craftsman edger uses the same engine. Really, I only need that paper looking diaphragm for the carburetor. I feel as if that's the culprit because I have cleaned everything else out really well.
Same style engine with the fuel tank also filling in as the fuel bowl, with the carb mounted directly to the top of the fuel tank.
Thank you!
yes they are still available
Thanks. Found the diaphragm on ebay, I believe that's all I need. My bet is that is the culprit. Probably my fault for letting the brake cleaner get to it.
I have the same carbulator, I need to replace the carbulator kit, did you know the carbulator kit part number?
On mine there is a sixth screw hidden in the venturi about 1 !/2" long.So dont be too hasty trying to force the carb away from the tank.
Same on mine. Just take a screwdriver and gently push the butterfly valve open and peer way down the carb throat.
