THANKS SO MUCH for creating this carburetor cleaning tutorial! My mower started surging real bad after running out of gas during operation (I presume some dirt found its way into the carb) and I was stumped. I looked at other videos and they appeared complex. Your video had my EXACT engine and explained everything perfectly, and my mower's back in top shape. Thank you! No more surging! You are a STAR!!!

I bought my mower several years ago. It has always been a bit of a s*d! I've had it back to the dealer but that made little difference. I knew it was a fuel problem with lumpy running and being difficult to start and almost impossible to restart when hot. I followed this video and cleaned the carburettor and replaced the gasket and diaphragm. It's a different machine now. It starts easily whether hot or cold, runs well and tackles long grass with ease. If only I had done this years ago. Thanks for your easy to understand video.

Quite a few years ago a good mate of mine found one of these in someones street side hard rubbish and gave it to me mainly because I kept nicking his! No idea how old it is. Another old mate serviced it and got it running. Since then, we’ve move to a bigger property. Recently it started to run a bit rough and stalling but I’m too sentimental to replace it! Thanks to your videos I’ve had a crack at servicing it myself and it is now running like a dream and better than when I first got it! Quite easy when you’ve got clear instructions! Thanks! Still plenty of years left in the old girl!

Thanks. Could not have fixed my mower without the likes of you. I watched a load of RUclips videos on these carbs 'running too rich', 'lumpy throttle control', sooting up spark plug, 'fuel leaking', 'not sucking up fuel unless tank more than half full', 'primer bulb not sucking fuel' etc. My mower was doing all of these things. I started off cleaning the carb with carb spray and changing the diaphragm and gasket for a non genuine version off ebay. This may have made it a little worse. Making a sandwich with the diaphragm between two gaskets made minimal difference. The problem was these plastic carbs are prone to distorting with heat and time making the surface that contacts the gasket uneven. I tried flattening it a bit with a sharpening stone and that did not help. Finally using the carburettor replacement fixed all the problems. If your carburettor is distorted get a Briggs and Stratton genuine replacement. They are not expensive

Thank you for this excellent video for both cleaning up the carburetor and replacing the gaskets to fit it back onto the fuel tank. Not only are your instructions clear but you have a nice delivery that instills confidence that it will work. The result for me today was exactly that. The 4.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine runs without surging anymore and my wife will probably stop expecting me to fix that hand lawn mower she brought back from the garage sale.

From Mark. I enjoyed watching your video with the diaphragm and carburetor gasket replacement. At this time, I have my sister’s mower at my place for the exact same repair. The B&S engine (10T802) runs great for about 2 years and will promptly blow another gasket. I tried another carburetor and there was no change in the end result. Now I purchase the carburetor parts in bulk for my sisters mower and a Series 300 B&S engine that I have. Best Regards From KY. Cheers.

    excellent video.. 5 STARS
I stumbled across your video looking to service a mower i bought off ebay. The oil dipstick screw wouldnt turn and the whle thing came out! (fixing screws were missing) managed to twist cap open, lubricated it a bit, put it back in and put 2 replacement screws (finally my collection of odd screws has come in handy) so the dipstick unit is now fixed and cap can now be turned and oil checked. quiet proud of my self! I hate DIY because something always goes wrong!! I even managed to clean the Air filter!! so now feeling confident I searched youtube and came across your video, and now after watchng it i feel confident enough to tackle a simple service !! (at this rate i'm going to put my local lawnmower repair shop out of business!!!)
    cheers mate

Thank you for this video. I have same briggs and Stratton engine in my Mountfield empress 16 and had changed the carburettor gaskets but broke my leg and shattered knee cap so had a delay finishing the project and when I came back to finish up for the life of me I couldn't remember which way the springs went back on. Really should have taken a picture but didn't anticipate starting the job one spring and having to finish it the next one lol.
    You're a star. Thanks again.

A couple of things to note, the o ring on the carb should be fitted to the carb and clipped in place before it is put back on the mower. Also, if you put the black sump breather pipe on the carb before putting it back on the mower, it makes life easier.

I usually brush off the top of the tank and around the carburetor to make sure nothing falls in it. So it's easier to clean and maintain before putting the thing back together with new parts.

Hopefully you still monitor these comments - I just cleaned my air filter and I can't get the long crew to "bite" into anything. Where does that long screw thread into? It's driving me crazy, it should be dead simple! Thanks for your help if you see this! FOLLOW UP NOTE - after asking about where the long air cleaner screw needs to thread I figured it out - I removed the tank and carb assembly from the mower, then took the carb off from the tank and looked at where the long screw should thread into. It turns out that the hole was full of dirt (not sure how it got in there) so I cleaned it out with a narrow pick which took a while to get all of the dirt out until the screw threaded in enough. I tested it as I went with the carb off. Once the screw threaded in enough I put everything back together and onto the mower - the long screw seated fine and holds the air cleaner cover in place securely now.

I always clean and blow everything off with air gun "before" I take everything apart. That way all that dirt doesn't get in the carb or engine etc. (that's just how I am- it bothers some people) Also so much easier to work on from that point.

🥳🥳🥳 Watched the video one time, and cleaned the carburetor. 💪 When you said in the video, that you only need a descent socket set (or at least a socket set), I was like... Yeah that's already fixed then. Just got the best gift from my boyfriend, the biggest Barco socket set, he could find. 🥳😁
But anyway. First time ever, I played with lawnmower engine stuff, and you explained it very well, and our mover now works perfectly. I'm so proud. 🥳😎💪💖

Hello congratulations for the video that taught me a lot. But I noticed that in my opinion there is an error when you mount the carburettor with a free oring seal on the intake pipe !! I believe this must be mounted first on the carburetor with the ring of pastica that blocks it and only after inserting it in the intake pipe !! Otherwise this would not fit well by not closing and allowing the engine to suck in outside air. I specify that it is not a new controversy and only to avoid this error to others and forgive me for the translation made with Google translator. Greetings from Italy

One problem I still have is that the primer bulb gets sucked in after about 5 mins of running and the engine cuts out. If I pull the bulb back out and prime again, the engine starts and runs again for another 5 mins before repeating the cut out. any ideas what the problem could be? My filter screw does NOT tighten down any more. Vibrates loose so filter wobbles and is not efficient. Is it missing something? Does it fit/screw into a gromet because the screw treads are NOT damaged but just looking into the cup the screw doesn't catch any corresponding threads to seat & hold screw in place.. Do I put some loctite goop in the hole a create new threads?

That O ring and white plastic collar goes in the carb first .The O ring first and then the plastic collar which is an interference fit in the carb .It will suck air in the wrong place like that
