Hello professor Andy, I have a really quick question. First off this has nothing to do with the video and for that I am sorry. Does dào (道) alone have a translation? Or those it need a second character for it to be a word?
(道)may be translated abuntdantly like: something said (including a thought), a discourse or a conversation (on a topic), a matter, a reasoning & not to mention also as a way. Religion wise, in Christianity, ...(道)the Word was God

If you study ,you will learn. When I was six years old,my father died." Please, what would be their chinese patterns. I am looking forward to having your reply. With best wishs.
I have lots of problems with simplified characters. They can't be looked up through the usual radical-stroke method, several words are grouped together by abbreviated phonetics, and it is restrictive to writing from 1949 onward. I find traditional characters are better to learn, and just being able to recognize simplified characters is sufficient.

I am an english speaker and I watch a lot of Chinese drama and movies. I would like to learn to read the subtitles because they are not always translated. Are they usually in Traditional or Simplified.
I find listening and Reading easier than speaking or writing... writing is the hardest one. Funny thing I can read chinese characters(simplified characters) up to hsk3 or hsk4 but when it comes to writing it feels like I never studied the characters haha. When it comes to listening I can listen fairly well and I can distinguish tones well though, I might make mistakes at times but when it comes to speaking I mix the tones haha. As a language learner (Amharic native speaker..English C1.. Spanish B1 and Chinese learner) I would like to say no language is easy. If you love Chinese and consistently study the right way then it is a matter of time before you will achieve your desired level of fluency in the language. Anybody can do it 😄
In today's world most written chinese can be done with pinyin input and by recognizing the chinese characters...do u find writing chinese characters with a pen relevant today?
@@AskAndy i did make myself write till HSK3 which is about 600 words but thereafter i get tiring to write in HSK4, but nonetheless i still make effort to write it when i got time, but thereafter HSK5&6, i wont write anymore, so now i learn how to write pinyin and recognize the characters from HSK1-4 mostly

Hi Andy! Can you recommend or do you have a resources of commonly used characters? (atleast 100 characters) I want to start practicing writing the characters & i don't know where or how to start. Thank you so much.
Is Chinese difficult? I would say "yes." At least for me. For me, the biggest problem is listening. The lack of phonetic variety (something you mentioned - only 409 sounds, many of which sound almost identical to one another) and most words being only 2 syllables (most words in Chinese are made up of 2 characters that have been slapped together) means that too many of the words sound "identical" to me and I can't make sense of anything that's been said. And also tones are impossible for me, which compounds the difficulty in understanding the language.
As a non-english native speaker, I would said in my personal experience that at first spoken English was difficult for me, but when I was listening to English over and over again I was able to understand English phonetics more, and been able to understand spoken English. Probably, you need to get more exposed to spoken chinese to be able to understand chinese as a native.
The trickiest party is 中文's 7:36 Oh guy, it ain't obvious beginning to work with the other side of the brain. I want to master it's handwriting fairly at least.

感謝!Shame that you are giving the CPC “party line” about what 國語 means though. Would be better just to say “that’s what they call Mandarin in Taiwan” etc. rather than making your political opinions part of the video. But in any case, thank you so much and keep it up!
If you grew up being told that your whole life, you probably wouldn't think of it as a controversial thing to say. That's what I gathered from Andy mentioning Taiwan anyway.
Andy It is not about 1.4 billion people- it is traditional chinese - the original chinese characters before Mao communism 1949 If you don’t know - don’t make a video and laugh Learning Mandarin is not counting about 1.4 billion people, it is about chinese language by itself … Simplified Chinese is for those chinese people can’t read and write so easy to learn less strokes after Mao Communism took over in 1949. If you don’t know don’t make the video spread it out ok

Hello professor Andy, I have a really quick question. First off this has nothing to do with the video and for that I am sorry. Does dào (道) alone have a translation? Or those it need a second character for it to be a word?
No problem, my friend.
We have the translation TAO for 道 in English.
And 道教Taoism is known as the local religion in China.
(道)may be translated abuntdantly like: something said (including a thought), a discourse or a conversation (on a topic), a matter, a reasoning & not to mention also as a way. Religion wise, in Christianity, ...(道)the Word was God

Personally, I prefer to write simplified characters because of their less strokes.
But traditional characters are more meaningful and beautiful.

I am an english speaker and I watch a lot of Chinese drama and movies. I would like to learn to read the subtitles because they are not always translated. Are they usually in Traditional or Simplified.
It's up to where they were produced. It would be in traditional for those from Hongkong and Taiwan while in simplified for those from mainland China.
Anybody can do it 😄
You can summarize it as OUTPUT is more difficult than INPUT :)
@@AskAndy agreed 😄 great summary

您好。 请问,the 的 used to show possession. Like 我的朋友。I saw one sentence that does not use 的。
Sentence is 我很爱我妈妈。should it be 。。。我的妈妈?谢谢你!
Yeah. That's common. When it comes to CLOSE relationships like between family members, we often omit that 的: such as 我妈妈,我爸爸,我姐姐,etc.
Even you think a friend is a good friend, and you are intimate to each other, you can say 我朋友
Another common example is 我家
Nothing wrong in that omittion.
Wow! Thank you Andy! I was confused with it. Thank you for the answer. 🤗🤗

Hi Andy! Can you recommend or do you have a resources of commonly used characters? (atleast 100 characters) I want to start practicing writing the characters & i don't know where or how to start. Thank you so much.
You can start with the 100 characters on this website: baike.baidu.com/item/%E6%B1%89%E8%AF%AD%E5%B8%B8%E7%94%A8100%E5%AD%97/16472309?fr=aladdin

Thank you so much! i hope gtranslate will do great 😁

Thank you for your feedback.

l am trying to make learning Chinese easier for you guys instead of saying PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

I didn't mean that but just did a literal translation of 国语。
If you grew up being told that your whole life, you probably wouldn't think of it as a controversial thing to say.
That's what I gathered from Andy mentioning Taiwan anyway.
Andy It is not about 1.4 billion people- it is traditional chinese - the original chinese characters before Mao communism 1949
If you don’t know - don’t make a video and laugh
Learning Mandarin is not counting about 1.4 billion people, it is about chinese language by itself … Simplified Chinese is for those chinese people can’t read and write so easy to learn less strokes after Mao Communism took over in 1949. If you don’t know don’t make the video spread it out ok
What is difference between hua ren and zhong guo ren?
Good question!
Hua ren is a Chinese who was born in China but he/she has changed his/her nationality.
While Zhong guo ren refers to commom people in China.
Or Chinese people travel to other coutries with a Chinese passport.
Technically, you can tell if he/she has a Chinese passport. lf he does, he is Zhong guo ren. lf he doesn't but born in China, he is Hua ren.
