    Hello Andy,
    I started learning Chinese a while ago and stumbled upon your videos on youtube. I find them very informative and useful. I am an English language teacher and a native speaker of Hungarian. Fun fact: "yīcì" (once) sounds like "eccő" which is a dialectical/slang form of the word "egyszer" in Hungarian (most typically used by older people nowadays in and around the region of Szeged) and it means the same thing as in Chinese.

    Hi! Are there certain situations in which you can only use 多长时间 rather than 多久 and vice versa (like for 几 you use it only for 12 and less), or can you use them both interchangeably. So in your above example could you have said 做饭要多久 instead of 做饭多长时间?Thanks! :)

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 года назад

      Good question!

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 года назад

      You won't find the difference between 多长时间 and 多久 in any dictionaries.

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 года назад

      But to me, 多久 feels longer than 多长时间。

    • @AskAndy

      做饭要多长时间 is neutral. But 做饭要多久 sounds like you expect it to be a long time.

    Hi Andy: your tips and tricks are very cool, fun and helpful. So here is my request... when we see/hear loan words in Mandarin, it is noticeable that Chinese speakers don't use certain sounds and replace them by others. Excellent videos.
    One minor point.
    ''How to ... .... .... '' is NEVER a question.
    I'm a native speaker and English language teacher and I see this error a lot.
    How to get to the city centre? is wrong. It should be ''How do I get to the city centre?''
    Andy asks ''How to answer 'WH' questions? This is incorrect. It should be 'How to answer 'WH' questions but this is information NOT a question.
    I think I know how this error arises.
    In Mandarin for example they say ''Zenme zou shi zhongxin?'' which is then translated word for word as ''How to go to the city centre?'' This is a literal translation but it's wrong. The correct translation is ''How do you get to the city centre?''
    Foreigners have a big problem with the word 'do' in English questions.
    The French say ''Manges-tu des bananes? Eat you bananas?
    The Dutch say ''Eet-je bananen?'' Eat you bananas?
    The Spanish say ''Comes platanos?'' Eat you bananas?
    There's only one verb in these question and that's 'eat'.
    In English there are two verbs 'do' and 'eat'.
    There's no easy trick to learning this oddity.
    It just has to be learnt.

    "How long do you want to learn" doesn't make sense really. It is either "how long do you want to 'study' 'for'?" or I don't know... I am not sure what you mean. Is the question about how long one wants to study today, or how many years he wants to spend studying in general?

      @@AskAndy that's why I refer to it. It is difficult to understand it without context so it does not help you as a teacher to get through to the student. 怎么你去北京。I think it is grammatical correct. But the meaning is Why you go to Beijing.
    怎么also can mean Why.... 我怎么一来你就走

      Better translation for 怎么 in that case is "how come"
